PETER BUFFETT HACE LAS PREGUNTAS DIFÍCILES

l título resaltó en el email de 2013 enviado por la Nonprofit Association of the Midlands, con una liga hacia la nota editorial de Peter Buffett en el New York Times (artículo con el mismo nombre). En dicha nota él dijo lo no-dicho, capturando el dilema que solamente la sociedad más adinerada puede ignorar.

“Mientras más vidas y comunidades son destruidas por el sistema que crea vastas cantidades de riqueza para unos cuantos, más heroica suena el ‘dar algo de vuelta’”, escribió Peter. “Es lo que yo llamaría ‘lavado de conciencia’, sentirse mejor sobre acumular más de lo que cualquier persona necesita para vivir al rociar un poco de dinero por aquí y por allá como un acto de caridad”.

“A razón de quién es mi padre [el famado inversionista Warren Buffet, nativo de Omaha], yo he podido ocupar puestos que yo jamás hubiere imaginado que lograría tener. Dentro de cualquier importante reunión de filantropía, uno es testigo de sesiones entre jefes de estado, gerentes de inversiones y líderes corporativos. Todos están buscando respuestas con su mano derecha a problemas que las demás personas en el cuarto crearon con su mano izquierda”.

Pocos pueden hablar de esto con tanta resonancia. El músico, compositor y productor de carrera se convirtió en filántropo en el 2006 cuando el inversionista más famoso del mundo presentó a sus tres hijos - Peter siendo el más joven de ellos - una fortuna a administrar para la filantropía. Peter lo llama su propio big bang. Su esfuerzo ahora se llevaba a cabo en otro nivel y su trabajo con artistas y con la cultura nativo americana - incluyendo trabajar en Dancing With Wolves, en la miniserie 500 Nations de Kevin Costner para la CBS y en su propia gira nacional con su producción musical Spirit: The Seventh Fire - le prepararon para poder apreciar de manera diferente su responsabilidad.

Breves Una historia diferente Es la fábula de aquél niño que decía lo que otro no decían o no podían decir lo que ayuda a explicar su rol como la luz pública y el disruptor en la filantropía de la familia.

“Tenemos que encontrar aspectos de nuestro niño interior, en donde la imaginación es lo más fresca posible.

Cuando se es joven y cualquier cosa es posible, que todo es posible, vemos las cosas con nuevos ojos. Así que aprovechar eso es crucial”.

Su madre artística fomentó ese talento.

“Yo le dije a mi madre, ‘Madre, quiero crecer y convertirme en músico’. Ella me dijo: ‘Cariño, no puedes hacer las dos cosas’. Y así fue como sucedió”.

Su sitio web peterbuffett.com está repleto de ensayos, canciones, fotos, videos y presentaciones en vivo, siendo la más reciente de ellas una presentación basada en su best seller del New York Times titulado Life Is What You Make It (La vida es lo que haces de ella). Él también comenzó una serie de podcast el mes pasado titulado What’s Next (Qué es lo que sigue), una conversación con líderes de pensamiento que su Fundación Novo apoya y que viven la misión de la imaginación radical como un ingrediente esencial del progreso.

Con pocas respuestas pero muchas observaciones sobre sus ensayos, Buffet no solamente desafía el status quo en la filantropía, sino también nuestra cultura.

DEFENSORES DEMANDAN SEGURAS CONDICIONES DE TRABAJO PARA LOS POLLEROS Este año, los estadunidenses consumirán alrededor de 46 millones de pavos para el Día de Acción de Gracias. Pero el precio unitario de esos pavos conlleva un alto precio humano para los trabajadores de esas industrias que tienen pocos incentivos para la seguridad y la dignidad en esos lugares de trabajo.

Nebraska Appleseed fue anfitrión en colaboración con otras organizaciones, del seminario por internet y la presentación con trabajadores de aves y cárnicos, junto con defensores nacionales de los derechos de humanos y de trabajadores de todo el país.

El grupo presentó una crónica sobre las altas tazas de lesiones e incapacidades permanentes, la velocidad castrante de las bandas de producción, lo sueldos a nivel pobreza, la negación de descansos para ir al baño, las condiciones inseguras de trabajo, y el clima de miedo que esta presente en las plantas de cárnicos y aves.

El pasado mes, Oxfam American presentó un reporte completo con titulo “La Vida en la Línea: El Costo Humano del Pollo Barato”, el cual describe y reafirma las altas tazas de lesiones de incapacidad permanente, los bajos salarios y el degradante ambiente de trabajo que castiga a los trabajadores por reportar lesiones o condiciones peligrosas de trabajo en las plantas de aves de todo el país.

Appleseed Nebraska invita al público en general a leer el reporte, y esperan que cada uno también firme la petición al seleccionar la pestaña “Take Action” en su página de internet neappleseed.com.

La petición demanda que as compañías establezcan condiciones seguras de trabajo, salarios y beneficios justos, para los trabajadores de las plantas de pollos.

El entendimiento no comienza solamente con un asombro infantil, sino con la habilidad de en verdad entender al “otro”.

“Estar abierto a la posibilidad de que alguien puede verse diferente a ti, vivir de manera diferente a ti, tener diferencias culturales pero que por dentro – y así es como crecí con mis padres – la idea es que por dentro todos estamos sangrando la misma sangre y deseamos las mismas cosas para nuestros hijos. Lo fundamental no cambia. Yo he tenido la fortuna de haber visitado muchos lugares en el mundo y he visto que las sonrisas funcionan en todos lados y que las lágrimas funcionan en todos lados”.

En su ensayo Man-Made Extinction Event (Extinción Masiva Creada Por El Hombre), Peter aplica las mismas analogías a nuestro enfoque sobre el calentamiento global. En dicho ensayo, él presenta una hipótesis sobre una “nueva teoría de cohesión social” construida sobre bloques de seguridad y confianza. Es importante – agrega él en esta entrevista – que éstos comiencen a nivel de su superficie.

“La respuesta corta es que este nuevo código esencialmente saldrá desde abajo, desde cero, de experimentos locales y de las personas dispuestas a usar su imaginación y que se piense en ellos en este momento como radicales”.

Inherente al cambio y a las nuevas narrativas encontramos un conflicto que debemos aceptar. En lugar de encontrar una causa común, la sociedad está siendo separada.

“En realidad no tenemos que escoger un bando. Podemos tener puntos de vista diferentes e interactuar. Las baterías obtienen su energía gracias a que hay un positivo y un negativo.

En general, todo funciona gracias a que existe polaridad”.

NO A LA HR 3573 QUE PUEDE ACABAR CON EL ACTUAL SISTEMA DE REFUGIADOS Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos de Nebraska, JFON-NE, anunció su rechazo al voto de la Casa de Representantes del 19 de noviembre para restringir la entrada a los Estados Unidos a refugiados de Irak y Siria, por ser una decisión en reacción basada en el miedo.

El Subcomité de Pode judicial de la Casa de Representantes, sobre inmigración y Seguridad en la frontera, se encuentra actualmente revisando la Omisión de Reasentamiento para Refugiados y la Propuesta de ley de seguridad HR 3573.

Esta propuesta de ley podría virtualmente terminar con el actual sistema para refugiados. La HR 3575 le otorgaría al congreso y no al presidente, el poder para determinar el número de admisión de refugiados dentro de los Estados Unidos. En el caso que el congreso no llegara a una decisión en el número, todas las futuras admisiones de refugiados serían detenidas. Dado el existente nivel de política de riesgo y partidismo en el Congreso, ese plan podría eliminar el programa de refugiados, como es conocido hasta ahora.

Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos está pidiendo la colaboración de aquellos quienes apoyan a los refugiados, que se comuniquen con sus representantes y les hagan saber que su oposición a la HR 3573. PETER BUFFETT ASKS THE HARD QUESTIONS

he title rang through in the 2013 email from the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands, linking to Peter Buffett’s New York Times editorial of the same name. In it he said the unsaid, capturing the quandary only the world’s most affluent society could ignore.

“As more lives and communities are destroyed by the system that creates vast amounts of wealth for the few, the more heroic it sounds to ‘give back,’” wrote Peter. “It’s what I would call ‘conscience laundering’ — feeling better about accumulating more than any one person could possibly need to live on by sprinkling a little around as an act of charity.”

“Because of who my father is [famed investor and Omahan Warren Buffett], I’ve been able to occupy some seats I never expected to sit in. Inside any important philanthropy meeting, you witness heads of state meeting with investment managers and corporate leaders. All are searching for answers with their right hand to problems that others in the room have created with their left.”

Few could make that call with such resonance.

The career musician, composer and producer became a global philanthropist in 2006 when the world’s most famous investor tasked his three children, Peter being the youngest, with a fortune to manage for philanthropy. Peter calls it his own big bang. His stage had all of a sudden gotten much bigger and his work with Native American artists and culture -- including work on Dancing With Wolves, Kevin Costner’s CBS miniseries 500 Nations and his own nationally touring musical production Spirit: The Seventh Fire -- prepared him to take a different look at his responsibility.

“It started with being tied into the native culture for a good decade or so before the philanthropy started so I had a sense of colonialism,” Peter said in a far-ranging interview shortly after that column’s publication.

“I had a sense of the damage done when you’re disconnected from your home and the truth that you’ve known for a millennia. And that really is why I was so quick to come up with the philan-

thropic colonialism idea because of my history before we started philanthropy.”

That unique viewpoint allows him to continually test ideas, media and charitable investments.

All to be taken, he would insist, to be weighed with your own experiences and viewpoints.

“Just because I said ’The emperor has no clothes,’ doesn’t make me an expert tailor.”

A Different Story It’s the fable of that child saying what others wouldn’t or couldn’t that helps explain his role as the public reflector and disruptor in the family’s philanthropy.

“We do have to find aspects of our child self, where imagination is the most fresh. When we’re young and anything’s possible, everything’s possible, and we look at everything with new eyes. So tapping into that is crucial.”

His artistic mother encouraged the talent.

“I said to my Mom, ‘Mom, I want to grow up and be a musician.’ She said ‘Honey, you can’t do both.’ So there you have it.” y continued on page 8

NO ON HR 3573 TO END THE CURRENT REFUGEE SYSTEM Justice For Our Neighbors Nebraska or JFON-NE is disappointed by the House’s vote November 19 to restrict Iraqi and Syrian refugees entrance into the U.S. This sort of fear-based reaction must be resisted.

The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security is currently reviewing the Refugee Resettlement Oversight and Security Act, HR 3573.

The bill would virtually end the current refugee system. HR 3573 would give Congress, rather than the President, the power to set the number of refugee admissions into the U.S. Any time Congress would not be able to agree on a number, all further refugee admissions would be halted. Given the existing level of brinkmanship and partisanship in Congress, such a scheme would eliminate the refugee program, as we know it.

His website peterbuffett.com is deep with essays, songs, photos, videos and live performances, most recently a performance based on his New York Times bestseller Life Is What You Make It. He also started a podcast series last month titled What’s Next, a conversation with thought leaders his Novo Foundation supports that live the mission of radical imagination as an essential ingredient of progress.

Short on answers but long on observations in his essays, Buffet not only challenges the status quo in philanthropy, but also our culture.

“Instead of bemoaning the fact that so many live on less than $2 a day, we should all be figuring out how to live on $2 a day. I’d like to flip the whole thing upside down and drop the massive consumer culture altogether, and reconnect to each other and nature, and natural systems and rhythms.

Peter sees the artist’s role as critical in that change. “There has to be somebody out there dreaming, and imagining, and sort of synthesizing what’s possible.”

Understanding not only starts with a childlike wonder, but also the ability to really understand the “other.”

“Being open to the possibility that someone may look different than you, live differently than you, have cultural

differences – whatever – but that inside – and this is what I grew up with my parents. This idea that inside, we’re all bleeding the same blood and wish the same things for our kids. The fundamentals don’t change. I’ve been fortunate enough now to be in a lot of places in the world, and smiles work everywhere, tears work everywhere.”

In his essay Man-Made Extinction Event, Peter applies the same analogies to our approach to global warming. In it, he hypothesizes a “new theory of social cohesion,” built on blocks of safety and trust. It’s important, he adds in this interview, that those start at ground level.

“The short answer is this new code will come essentially from the bottom up, from the ground up, from local experiments, and people that are willing to use their imagination and to be thought of as fringe right now.”

Inherent in change and new narratives is a conflict that we must embrace. Rather than finding a common cause, society is being split.

“We don’t have to really take sides. We can have different points of view and there’s back and forth. Batteries get their power because there’s a plus and a minus. Generally speaking, everything somehow runs because there’s polarity.

ADVOCATES DEMAND SAFER WORK CONDITIONS TO POULTRY WORKERS This year, Americans consumed an estimated 46 million turkeys at Thanksgiving. But, the price of these turkeys comes at a high human cost for workers whose industry contains little incentive for safe and dignified workplaces.

On Nov. 19, a strong, growing chorus of voices concerned about the safety and health of poultry and meat processing workers urged companies to reduce the high number of crippling, repetitive-motion injuries, provide workers fair pay and benefits, and increase worker voice in poultry and meat plants across the country.

Nebraska Appleseed co-hosted a webinar and media presentation with meat and poultry workers, joined by national human and worker rights advocates from across the country.

The group chronicled the high rates of permanently disabling injuries, punishing work speeds, poverty-level wages, denial of bathroom breaks, unsafe working conditions and a climate of fear that all are present in poultry and meatpacking plants.

Last month, Oxfam America released a comprehensive, powerful report entitled “Lives on the Line: The Human Cost of Cheap Chicken,” which described and reaffirmed the extremely high rates of permanently crippling injuries, low wages, and a disturbing work environment that punishes workers for reporting injuries or unsafe work hazards in poultry plants across the country. Appleseed Nebraska is inviting all the public to read the report, and they hope that everyone also sign on to the petition by clicking “Take Action” on their website neappleseed.com. The petition demands companies create safe working conditions, and fair pay and benefits for poultry workers.

MLCDC: LOANS AND PLAN ON TAXES INFORMATION CLASSES Practical business training is part of the monthly meeting. MLCDC assists members with marketing, money management, advertising, customer relations and preparing a business plan. At the monthly meetings, members review each other’s loan applications, receive business assistance and help each other solve common business problems.

MLCDC uses the peer-lending group model to help the start-up of small businesses or to improve and grow existing businesses, which do not have access to bank credit.

on el mismo entusiasmo de siempre el simpático Erick “El Travieso” Pérez tiene ya todo listo para celebrar una edición más del maravilloso “Baile del Juguete” en Omaha, el próximo sábado 5 de diciembre de 6 de la tarde a 2 de la mañana.

Para quienes nunca han asistido a tan importante evento, Pérez explicó que se trata de un concierto tradicional, donde las estrellas son todas las agrupaciones hispanas del estado, exponentes de los diferentes géneros grupos musicales que están de moda.

“El apoyo de la comunidad más que todo es muy grande y lo hacemos de corazón, poniendo nuestro granito de arena para ayudar a otras personas que tal vez no tienen el dinero para comprarle un juguetito a sus hijos en la navidad”, explicó emocionado Pérez, quien en sus 22 años viviendo en esta ciudad ha logrado lo que nadie, el que sin protagonismos ni intereses ocultos, los artistas compartan el mismo escenario por una noble causa.

“Nadie se niega a participar porque todos conocen que nuestra intención es buena y que lo único que deseamos es que los juguetes que se recauden lleguen a manos de los niños que los necesiten”, comentó Pérez a quien se le ocurrió la idea de el “Baile del Juguete” hace ya 18 años.

“Comenzamos de la nada con puros DJs y dos bocinas recordó Pérez -, el año en que se inició el baile es cuando había grupos como Secreto de Amor y Grupo Travieso y de ahí en 1996, poco a poco se fueron integrando otros más”.

Actualmente según dijo Pérez, “son poco más de una treintena” las agrupaciones hispanas que sobresalen en la escena musical tan solo en Omaha y de ahí que la cartelera de el “Baile del Juguete 2015” resulte tan atractiva con las presentaciones de La Súper Válvula, Ilusión de Tierra Caliente, Clave 402, Grupo Torbellino, Banda Brisa, Fusión Mx, Fuerza Juvenil, Los Hermanos Mejía, Rosendo Robles, Indomable, La Reserva del Ritmo, Súper Gitano, El Gato de Guerrero, Conjunto Único, Tesoro Latino de Durango, Zahoma, Banda Santa Cruz, Tamborazo Sombrerete, Príncipes del Ritmo, Los Huskies, Grupo Híbrido, Perdidos del Norte y Grupo Convinación.

“Los muchachos siempre apartan la fecha para estar con nosotros, no cobran absolutamente nada y nosotros nos adaptamos al horario en el que ellos puedan participar porque entendemos que el mismo día pueden también tener otros compromisos”, señaló Pérez agregando que este año “los asistentes van a escuchar cumbia, la lla-

mada música de Tierra Caliente, banda, música de la Costa Chica, norteña, y hasta un grupo de rock que nos ha pedido una oportunidad y serán los que abran el espectáculo”.

“Yo únicamente les doy una llamada y me encargo del sonido, pero los grupos son los que hacen el show, los que presentan este baile - expresó Pérez con sincera humildad -; hay mucho talento en Omaha, muchos muchachos con ganas de salir adelante y a lo mejor les falta nada más un empujoncito. Ése día se van a lucir como nunca porque lo amerita la ocasión. Todos son buenos grupos y saben que mucha gente irá a verlos y puede ser una excelente oportunidad para que los contraten para sus fiestas, para una boda o una quinceañera”.

Cabe destacar que varios de los grupos que se presentarán en el “Baile del Juguete” cuentan con valioso material grabado como Zahoma y algunos recién vuelven a casa después exitosa gira y entrevistas en programas de televisión como Clave 402.

El requisito para entrar a divertirse sanamente es llevar un juguete con valor de $10 por persona ya sea para un niño o para una niña, o bien, pagar un boleto del mismo costo: “La respuesta de la comunidad hispana siempre es muy generosa gracias a Dios y por ello esto sigue creciendo, son muchos los que asisten y gracias a ellos podemos darle los juguetes a la señora Ofelia Robles (Especialista en Prevención del Crimen en la Jefatura del Sureste del Departamento de Policía de Omaha), para que los oficiales se los entreguen a los miles de niños que van a la fiesta navideña que les preparan en la secundaria del sur de Omaha”.

El gran “Baile del Juguete” será posible gracias a la participación de Lobo 97.7 FM (KBBX), Restaurante El Dorado, Taquería El Rey y Gardner Auto.

“Se va a poner muy bonito, les va a encantar y además vamos a regalar 300 playeras a los lleguen primero”, concluyó Pérez quien planea que el próximo año la función se realice en un foro más grande como Ralston Arena o el MidAmerica Center de Council Bluffs.
