na cultura corporativa saludable significa que las personas deben no solamente entender lo que apropiado y respetuoso en las interacciones con los demás, pero también deben sentirse empoderadas para hablar cuando son testigos de algo inadecuado o si ellas mismas son víctimas.

La capacitación en comunicación ética (“Antes la llamábamos capacitación en asertividad y capacitación de concienciación”), comenta Kracher, es un buen primer paso.

La capacitación ayuda a proporcionar a los trabajadores de las herramientas que necesitan para hablar sobre estos problemas, desde herramientas como las líneas telefónicas de ayuda anónima y los enlaces de recursos humanos dentro de la organización para la “pre-revisión”, un ensayo sobre lo que se debe decir para disipar o enfrentar una situación incómoda. Los supervisores y líderes también deben saber cómo responder a los reportes de sus subordinados y cuándo llevarlos ante recursos humanos, a consulta legal o incluso a la policía.

healthy corporate culture means people should not only understand what’s appropriate and respectful as far as interaction with others, but they should also feel empowered to speak up when they witness wrongdoing or are themselves a target. Formal ethical communication training or refresher training (“We used to call it assertiveness training and awareness training.”) is a good first step, Kracher said.

Training helps provide workers with the tools they need to speak up, from understanding resources like anonymous hotlines and human resources liaisons within an organization to “pre-scripting,” a rehearsal on what to say to diffuse or address an uncomfortable situation. Supervisors and leaders should also know how to respond to reports from their subordinates and when to bring in human resources, legal consultation or even law enforcement.

In milder situations, sometimes calling a person out in a non confrontational manner lets him or her know a behavior or comment isn’t welcome and can serve as a lasting deterrent.

Not all responses need to involve escalation, Kracher emphasized.

“You have to ask yourself what you want the end result to be,” she said. “You want to live in a workplace where you’re getting stuff done.”

And a positive workplace culture starts from the top down.

“It’s having leaders who are willing to talk about these things,” she said “To show that leaders care, that’s wonderful leadership.”

Organizations can work to create a workplace that is physically safe and psychologically safe, Kroeker said, and that goes beyond doing background checks and publishing anti-harassment policies in the employee handbook. The Trauma Informed Omaha website (traumamattersomaha.org) can help organizations find self-assessment tools and identify resources for creating a traumainformed workplace, she said.

“From a lot of the needs assessments and evaluations that we’ve done, (we’ve found that) people want to be asked if they’re okay and

they want their supervisors to ask how they’re doing and show an interest in who they are,” she said. “Just asking can do a lot for someone’s psychological safety, noticing that someone is caring about them.” #MeToo and Time’s Up will likely give way to another hot button issue eventually, but the conversation needs to be sustained locally.

“Sexual assault in the workplace is something that needs to be talked about. Otherwise it’s going to continue to happen,” said Power. “I get to have so many candid conversations in my role at the WCA and it’s so interesting to see how people are people are talking about this; it’s a very different conversation now than it was even three years ago, and I’ve only been with the WCA four and a half years.”

What WCA advocates say to their clients, Power said, applies to us all: “You can’t change the past but you’re here and you‘re learning and you’re going to make the future better. That’s what’s really important.”

a nostalgia fluyó cuando Cathy Hughes, la nativa de Omaha titán de los medios, fue celebrada en su ciudad natal del 17 al 19 de mayo. La comunidad afroamericana de Omaha de la que floreció Hughes ha sido testigo desde hace tiempo de todos sus logros. Su empresa Urban One Inc., cuyas marcas incluyen Radio One y TV One, son plataformas enfocadas en el público afroamericano.

A pesar de su presencia en medios que puede compararse con la de Oprah y una fortuna personal por medio billón de dólares, sus aportaciones no eran muy conocidas por el público en general, por lo menos no hasta el mes pasado. Estaban orgullosos del hecho de que yo fui la primera mujer en el puesto que me colocaron y me mantuvieron ahí pues Katharine Graham (ya fallecida y antes editora del Washington Post) se mostraba entusiasta por mi trabajo”.

Ella conoció a Graham a través de la fallecida Susan Thompson Buffett, la primera esposa de Warren Buffett, billonario inversionista y entonces accionista mayoritario del Washington Post.

“Susie se estaba quedando en su casa. En ese entonces Susie era una cantante con aspiraciones profesionales y yo era su manager”.

Hughes ya conocía a Buffett de su activismo social en Omaha, pues es algo que compartían. El difunto magnate John H. Johnson (revistas Ebony, Jet) se convirtió en su amigo, mentor y asesor.

COMING HOME IS SWEET for media giant Cathy Hughes - Part 1

weet nostalgia flowed when Omaha native media titan Cathy Hughes got feted in her hometown May 17-19. The Omaha African-American community that produced Hughes has long followed her achievements. Her multimedia Urban One Inc., whose brands include Radio One and TV One, are Black-centric platforms.

Despite a media footprint rivaling Oprah and a personal net worth of half a billion dollars, her Black market niche didn’t register with the general public. Until last month. Heisman Trophywinner Johnny Rodgers marshaled coverage for street renaming, Empowerment Network and Omaha Press Club recognitions.

Surrounded by friends, family and local Black leaders, Hughes, the 71-year-old Urban One chair, and her son and business partner, CEO Alfred Liggins Jr., 53, basked in the glow of defining legacies.

Liggins said admiringly of her: “She’s got guts, grit and she still has a ton of energy. She’s well-deserving of these honors.”

Rodgers is among history-makers whose paths she’s intersected.

She appreciates him making her mogul ascent more widely known so as to inspire others.

“Johnny told me, ‘I’m doing this for the Black kids that need to know you exist – that you grew up in the projects in Omaha (to become the first Black woman chair of a publicly traded company).’

Johnny added, ‘I’m also doing it for the white folks who don’t realize

that in a whole different arena and way you’re our Warren Buffett.’

That kind of caused me to choke up.”

She came up in Logan-Fontenelle public housing when northeast Omaha truly was “a village.” Her accountant father and International Sweethearts of Rhythm musician mother were civil rights warriors (the De Porres Club). The former Cathy Woods attended Catholic schools. She demonstrated for equal rights. When she became a teen single mom, she didn’t let that status or reality define her, but drive her.

Neither did she keep her radio fame ambitions to herself.

“Ever since I’ve been born, I’ve been running my mouth. I remember once almost getting suspended because I challenged a nun. She said, ‘You have a big mouth,’ and I said, ‘One day I’m going to make a lot of money off of my big mouth.’ I knew as a child I was a communicator. As I grew in my knowledge and awareness of my African history and legacy, I realized I was from the giro tradition of maintaining folklore and history in story form. I just innately had that ability.”

In 1972 she left for Washington D.C. to lecture at Howard University at the invite of noted broadcaster Tony Brown, whom she met in Omaha. It’s then-fledgling commercial radio station, WHUR, made her the city’s first woman general manager. She grew ad revenues and listeners. A program she created, “Quiet Storm,”

popularized the urban format nationally. With ex-husband Dewey Hughes she worked wonders at WOL in D.C. After their split, she built Radio One. “Omaha provided a safe haven, but once in Washington D.C. I had to rely on and call forth everything I had learned in Omaha in order just to survive and move forward. Folks in D.C. were like, ‘Oh yeah, another small town hick girl come to town to try to make a way for herself.’ It was an entirely different environment.”

Remarkable connections opened doors.

“I was prepared to recognize an opportunity and take full advantage of it. Howard University (whose School of Communication is named after her) literally groomed me. They were proud of the fact I was the first woman in the position they placed me in and they kept going with me because Katharine Graham (the late Washington Post publisher) was enthusiastic about me.”

She met Graham through the late Susan Thompson Buffett, the first wife of billionaire investor and then-major Post shareholder Warren Buffett.

“Susie was staying at her house. At that time Susie was a singer with professional entertainment aspirations and I was her manager.”

Hughes already knew Buffett from their shared social activism in Omaha. The late publishing magnate John H. Johnson (Ebony, Jet magazines) became a friend, mentor and adviser.

OMAHA CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY THIS SUMMER The Southeast precinct of the Omaha Police Department is offering their annual Citizen Police Academy from August 2 to September 6. Enrollment is FREE and open now.

Millones de inmigrantes documentados llenan sus declaraciones de impuestos cada año, y pagan impuestos por beneficios que ni siquiera pueden usar, como Seguro Social y Medicare.

La mejor estimación viene de un estudio del Instituto de Impuestos y Política Económica, una oficina en Washington, DC, quien sugiere que cerca de la mitad de los trabajadores indocumentados en Estados nidos llenan declaraciones de impuestos. Los datos más recientes del IRS, del 2015, muestran que la agencia recibe 4.4 millones en declaraciones de impuestos de trabajadores que no cuentan con Número de Seguro Social, lo que incluye un gran número de inmigrantes indocumentados. LA ORDEN DE TRUMP NO APLICARÁ A LOS 2,300 NIÑOS INMIGRANTES

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last Wednesday to end his administration’s policy of separating undocumented immigrant families and instead detain parents with their children. The reality is that it may not stop separating families, will not reunite the thousands of families already torn apart, and aims to lock up even more children and families.

The executive order states the administration will “maintain family unity, including by detaining alien families together where appropriate and consistent with law and available resources.”

But the reversal, which could face a legal battle likely won’t apply to the more than 2,300 children who have already been separated from their parents, the Department of Health and Human Services said. The children who have already been separated from their parents by Border Patrol agents reportedly range from infants to teens.

The order follows an outcry from Republican and Democratic lawmakers, human rights advocates, religious leaders and others over stories and images of migrant children being taken from their parents and detained, sometime in metal cages.

Hundreds of children have been sent to shelters in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Wednesday, while some parents have already been deported without their children.

GRAN AMBIENTE Y VARIEDAD en The Corner Kick

ra el día del partido entre México y Corea del Sur, y se podía sentir la emoción por tan anticipado partido de fútbol en The Corner Kick.

Se llegó la hora del partido y con esto la primera ronda de bebidas en la taqueria y cantina deportiva localizada en 13806 P St. Con un público muy futbolero en su mayoría y lugares casi agotados en el restaurante, parecía que iba a ser una mañana bástate ocupada para los meseros.

La cantidad de televisiones y bebidas disponibles para escoger hicieron que la espera por los tacos fuera fácil, pues a las 11 a.m. en adelante se empezarían a servir los tacos convencionales. La selección de bebidas sin alcohol incluye refrescos populares, limonada, té helado y una variedad de refrescos Jarritos. Por otra parte, la selección de bebidas con alcohol son cervezas domesticas e importadas, vinos, tequila, bebidas mezcladas, algunos cócteles y margaritas.

Dos proyectores en cada extremo del restaurante proyectan el partido a gran tamaño en compañía de más televisores alrededor de todo el restaurante.

Algo muy grato a notar es que el menú también tiene gran variedad de platillos para escoger. En caso de que no desees ordenar tacos, existen otras opciones como enchiladas, fajitas, tortas y hasta curiosidades como un platillo llamado “The Messi”.

Al ser procedente del centro de México, cabe mencionar que mi relación con los tacos en esta parte de Estados Unidos es complicada por así decirlo. Uno de los contrastes más importantes que puedo encontrar es que muchas veces los tacos en Estados Unidos son totalmente diferentes a los tacos que estaba acostumbrado en México.

Ah habido algunas veces que al probar tacos en Estados Unidos tengo que preguntar cual se supone que es el taco que me sirvieron. Esto se debe a que el sabor de un taco de carnitas aquí, por ejemplo, no se parece a ninguna variación de tacos de carnitas en México.

En fin, aunque los otros platillos se veían tentadores, opte por ordenar un taco de cada uno que se ofrecía en el menú: asada, pechuga, al pastor, carnitas y barbacoa. Después de unos 10 minutos, llegaron mis cinco tacos justo a tiempo para el segundo tiempo del partido el cual ya ganaba México uno a cero.

Después de inspeccionar los cinco tacos por un momento localice el de carnitas, igual que en otros restaurantes, estos tacos era peculiares y no se parecían a sus variaciones mexicanas. El de carnitas tenía carne deshebrada y con un color

claro, siendo el único taco con un color distinto a los demás. A pesar de que la carne parecía estar un poco fría y el sabor era distinto al taco de carnitas convencional, el sabor curiosamente era bueno, y uno de los 2 mejores de estos cinco tacos.

Uno y faltaban cuatro, ahora era el turno del taco de al pastor, fácil de identificar por la piña.

Este taco visualmente se parecía mucho al taco de asada, ya que el corte de carne era muy parecido y por lo cual decidí comerlos seguido del otro.

Aunque no sabía mal, tampoco supo mucho a taco de al pastor. Se podría decir que en sabor el taco de al pastor se parecía al taco de asada también, pero con el olor de carne ahumada.

Faltaba el taco de pechuga y barbacoa. El taco de pechuga fue un taco diríamos que eclipsado por los otros tacos y el gol del Chicharito Hernández.

No tenía un sabor tan distintivo como el de carnitas, y el color de la carne era igual a los de asada y al pastor. Su sabor no era algo tan especial pero tampoco sabía mal, digamos que era un taco digno de ser taco sin recibir alguna distinción.

Por último el taco de barbacoa el cual desde su llegada fue inconfundible. Principalmente por el olor que emitía y el corte de la carne, era el taco que más se quería parecer a sus semejantes en México. Este taco junto con el taco de carnitas fueron los que más disfrute por su sabor. Cada uno tenía un color y sabor propio y sin duda fueron los que más resaltaron.

En general los tacos de The Corner Kick fueron buenos y preferibles en comparación con otros lugares que les quitan el sabor a los tacos poniendo verdura e ingredientes de más. Estos tacos tampoco tienen el problema de dejar un olor fuerte y persistente en la ropa o dedos como en muchos otros lugares que venden tacos en Estados Unidos.

Aunque tienen más puntos positivos que negativos, también caen en algunos de los errores de otros tacos en esta parte del país. Los tacos siguen siendo muy diferentes a sus versiones mexicanas, y aunque es un punto positivo que se ofrezca salsa verde y roja, hace falta que piquen un poco más, especialmente la roja.

Todo esto te invita a tener un gran tiempo a lado de familia y amigos, pues los meseros son muy amables y sociables. Esto junto con la gran variedad de comida y bebidas, te da la oportunidad de elegir lo que más se te antoje mientras ves tu evento deportivo favorito.

GREAT AMBIENCE AND VARIETY at The Corner Kick

I

t was game day between Mexico and South Korea, and you could feel the hype for such an anticipated soccer game at Omaha restaurant The Corner Kick.

The game began, and with it, so did the first round of drinks at the street tacos & sports cantina located at 13806 P St. With soccer fans filling the restaurant, all signs pointed to a busy morning for The Corner Kick waiters.

Having to wait for the tacos to be served until 11 a.m. was actually easy, thanks to the numerous televisions and drinks to choose from to stay entertained. The selection of non-alcoholic drinks includes popular soft drinks, lemonade, iced tea, and a variety of Jarritos soft drinks. The alcoholic beverage options are domestic and imported beers, wines, tequila, mixed drinks, some mules, and margaritas.

Two projectors at each end of the restaurant showed the game, along with more televisions all around the restaurant. Something great to note was the variety of dishes to choose from on the menu. In case you do not want to order tacos, there are other options such as enchiladas, fajitas, sandwiches, and even curiosities like a dish called “The Messi.”

Being from central Mexico, it is worth mentioning that my relationship with tacos in this part of the United States is complicated, so to speak. Tacos sold in the United States taste very different to those from Mexico.

There have been times when trying tacos in the United States when I have to ask what the taco I was served was supposed to be. The taste of a taco de carnitas in the U.S., for example, does not resemble any variation of Mexican carnitas tacos.

Regardless, even though the other menu dishes were tempting, I decided to order a taco for each one offered on the menu: asada steak, brisket, al pastor, carnitas, and barbacoa. After about 10 minutes, my five tacos arrived just in time for the second half of the game; Mexico was already winning one to zero.

After inspecting the five tacos for a moment, I located the carnitas one. As in other restaurants, this taco was peculiar and it did not look like any other carnitas tacos I had tasted in Mexico. It had shredded meat

and a light color, and it was the only taco with a different color than the others. Although the meat seemed to be a bit cold and the taste was different from the conventional carnitas taco, the flavor was interestingly good, and one of the best of the five tacos I ate.

One was gone and there were four more to go. It was the al pastor taco’s turn, which was easy to identify because of the pineapple. This taco was very visually similar to the asada one, since the cut of meat was almost the same, so I decided to eat them subsequently. Although it didn’t taste bad, it did not taste the same as the al pastor taco I have known. In taste, the al pastor taco was very similar to the asada taco but with a smoked meat smell.

The brisket and barbacoa tacos were the only ones left. The brisket taco was overshadowed by the other tacos and Chicharito Hernandez’s goal. It did not have a taste as distinctive as the carnitas taco, and the color of the meat was the same as the asada and al pastor. Its flavor was not anything special, but it did not taste bad. Let’s say it was worthy of being recognized as a taco without receiving any special distinction.

Finally, I moved on to the barbacoa taco, which was unmistakable due to the scent it emitted and the cut of the meat. It was the taco that tried to be true to its brothers in Mexico. This taco, together with the carnitas taco, were the ones I most enjoyed. They both had their own distinctive colors and flavors.

In general, the tacos at The Corner Kick are good and preferable compared to other places that take away tacos’ flavor by adding unnecessary vegetables and ingredients. These tacos also do not have the problem of leaving a strong and persistent smell on clothes or fingers like in many other restaurants in Omaha.

Even though I leave with mostly good impressions, they also fell into some of the mistakes of other tacos in this part of the country. The tacos are still very different from their Mexican versions, and although it is good that they offer green and red sauce, they need to be a little bit more spicy.

The Corner Kick gives you the opportunity of having a great time with family and friends, especially due to the kind and sociable waiters. The great variety of food and drinks allows you to choose what you want to eat while watching your favorite sport.

HISTORIA POR BERNARDO MONTOYA

n evento social y deportivo ha surgido, enfocándose en las actividades del fútbol para lograr fortalecer y desarrollar a las comunidades menos favorecidas, generando generando esparcimiento, recreación y convivencia de la población beneficiada con procesos formativos de carácter institucional.

Así se expreso Don Jaime Arriaga, originario del estado de Sonora, cuya actividad diaria le ha tenido inmerso en el trabajo. Hasta hoy, que finalmente se suma al grupo de adultos mayores que inician un torneo de fútbol, en la ciudad de Fremont, Nebraska.

Se trata del Proyecto Amigo de Fútbol Infantil de Nebraska, que desde hace 3 años ha ido evolucionando positivamente en la región.

Este es un proyecto social y deportivo que promueve actividades sociales, culturales, educativas y formativas por medio del fútbol como herramienta de enseñanza, transformación y aprendizaje.

Según David Jr. Santiago, esta actividad se realiza fortaleciendo procesos formativos en niños y niñas vulnerables de escasos recursos residentes en las diferentes áreas de la metrópoli, por ello, no solo cuentan con gente de Omaha sino también de Freemont, Iowa y Elkhorn.

Los niños y niñas del programa tienen la posibilidad de participar en un torneo de fútbol

totalmente gratuito, lo cual simboliza una gran ayuda económica, al considerar los gastos que conlleva la inscripción a este tipo de juegos.

“Tenemos un gran énfasis en el juego limpio y valores deportivos”, subrayo Santiago, al tiempo que indicó que las niñas son una mayoría en sus actividades.

Paralelamente, la formación humana se abarca con talleres que se desarrollamos previos a los encuentros deportivos enfocados en áreas como la nutrición, el acompañamiento familiar, la comunicación, el fortalecimiento del proyecto de vida y el liderazgo.

Desde el 2016 a la actualidad, este modelo ha beneficiado a más de 300 niños y niñas en un espacio de sana distracción y generación de oportunidades.

En este 2018, por tercer año consecutivo, el proyecto se desarrolla en el área Lincoln y Omaha, con 6 equipos contendientes. Para lograr su misión, cuentan con el apoyo de entidades patrocinadoras como aliados estratégicos del proyecto y un grupo humano comprometido con los objetivos propuestos.

Así, paso a paso están avanzando en esta meta establecida, la cual visualiza generar una transformación cultural y un desarrollo social a través del futbol.

For example, watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapes, kiwi, or pineapple. It is also important to consume water even if the person is not thirsty. By the elderly adopting healthy ways to consume healthy fruits and vegetables, they can keep themselves hydrated. There are seniors who are not used to drink water through the day however, it is recommended to consume eight glasses of water at room temperature. The sudden changes in temperature during the summer can have negative effects in the health of the elderly.
