odos los días Marisol Torres esta lista para visitar el domicilio de sus clientas, para embellecerles las uñas. Ella es manicurista y pedicurista que de forma independiente ha logrado posicionarse como una buena trabajadora en su ramo. En el comienzo de un nuevo día de trabajo para esta mujer que es jefe de familia en Omaha, lo primero es dejar a sus hijos en la escuela, para luego dirigirse a su primer cita a domicilio. No regresará a su cada hasta muy tarde, después de trabajar turnos de hasta 10 horas, encorvada sobre dedos de manos y pies. “Amo mi trabajo, porque me permite ganar un dinero limpio, para poder mantener a mis hijos y pagar mis cuentas. Pero también lo amo por que disfruto cada diseño que hago, sobre todo cuando las personas me dan la libertad de ser yo quien elija que es lo que les hace en sus uñas”, dijo. De acuerdo con Marisol, las mujeres que están interesada en hacer lucir sus manos y pies más bellos, seguramente has estado buscando opciones para utilizar uñas postizas y se han encontrado con que los centros de belleza ofrecen distintas opciones. Uñas postizas, uñas francesas, uñas acrílicas, “son términos que podrás encontrar y seguramente se confundirán sin poder saber qué elegir”, explico. Las uñas acrílicas son las más utilizadas, por su durabilidad, comodidad y firmeza. “Se usa en diversos colores y largos, lo que te permite buscar hasta encuentras las que más te acomoden y ponerlas tu misma. Lo malo está en que puede costarte quitártelas”. Las uñas de gel se ven muy naturales y no ocupan mucho mantenimiento, pero no será tan duradera como las uñas de acrílico. Se usa una luz ultravioleta para ponerlas y cuesta quitarlas, por eso debe hacerlo un profesional. Las uñas solares son como las acrílicas, pero con apariencia de una manicura francesa [color natural de la uña con la punta blanca]. Son un poco caras, pero duran más tiempo, aproximadamente 3 semanas. Las uñas esculpidas son la forma más duradera de uñas artificiales, pero requieren trabajarse regularmente para conservar su naturalidad. Para hacerlas, se requiere ir esculpiendo y alargando una lámina de metal, que tendrá la forma de la uña.

SERRATO ENCUENTRA UN BALANCE Como músico y educador POR LEO ADAM BIGA

Serrato era músico de sesión, solista y líder de un grupo musical en Nueva York. Cuando no estaba tocando, el visitaba los clubes para ver tocar a un sin fin de leyendas. Como buen coleccionista, él logró obtener raros póster de grandes conjuntos legendarios de jazz en lugares icónicos como el Village Gate en el este de Harlem. Serrato y sus estudiantes de Nueva York estaban a solamente unas cuadras de la zona cero. Observaron con sus propios ojos cómo sucedió todo. “Yo pedí a mis estudiantes internacionales adultos que escribieren sobre ese día pues eran de muchos países diferentes. Ellos escribieron de forma elocuente sobre lo que vieron. Yo guardé sus ensayos y decidí convertirlos en EYEWITNESS: New York Testimonies. Aunque todos experimentaron el mismo evento, escuchamos sobre ello filtrado a través de las sensibilidades de la diversidad de sus culturas”. Hay por todos lados fotos de sus estudiantes, familiares, amigos y de los músicos con quienes tocan. Las mesas están repletas de montones de libros. Su vida musical comenzó en Omaha en donde mostró una aptitud para la música, estudiando formalmente el piano. “Yo comencé participando en shows de talentos en la ciudad. La tienda de pianos Schmoller & Mueller tenía un show de talentos en la radio el sábado por la mañana. Gané el primer lugar un par de veces”. El graduado de la Preparatoria Creighton fue criado como hijo de una madre soltera que se divorció cuando él tenía 3 años de edad. “Ella era gran mujer que tuvo que pasar por mucho. En aquella época no había recursos pada madres solteras”. El artista chicano ha hizo honor a sus raíces latinas a través de viajes y estudio. Viajó a Rio de Janeiro, Brasil para adentrarse en bossa y la samba. Su canción “Blues in Rio” proviene de ahí. Un video en YouTube producido por Donald Mohr, amigo suyo que también es músico, usa esa canción mientras se presentan fotografías de las estancias de Serrato en Brasil. Viajando por Europa él llegó a España y termino por ser “impactado por el arte y esplendor de las corridas de toros”. Él continúa: “Comencé a regresar a España cada año para la larga temporada taurina como aficionado. Cerraba mi departamento en Nueva York y me iba volando. Mi vida como artista y gerente de una librería en Greenwich Village me permitió hacerlo. Esa era la vida bohemia”. Sus raíces musicales latinas y las influencias de su inmersión en el jazz mundial le permitieron crear. Él se presentó en Omaha. Después escuchó unos sonidos en la radio de la familia que cambiaron su vida. “Yo pensé que quería ser un pianista de concierto hasta que comencé a escuchar grabaciones de Art Tatum y Óscar Peterson, cuyos discos eran tocados desde Chicago. En verdad quedé impactado por estos grandes pianistas de jazz. Escuchar su música en verdad abrió un mundo de posibilidades”. El Harbor Conservatory en Spanish Harlem se convirtió en su Meca. SERRATO FINDS BALANCE as musician and educator BY LEO ADAM BIGA

rain elevators, not skyscrapers, fill the view outside Paul Serrato’s home now that the jazz pianist-composer is back in Omaha after decades in New York City. Serrato was a New York sideman, soloist and band leader. When not performing, he haunted clubs to see countless legends play. An avid collector, he helped himself to rare posters of great jazz lineups at iconic spots like the Village Gate in East Harlem. He also spent untold hours composing and trying out original tunes and arrangements. He’s released nine albums on his Graffiti Productions label. He cut his tenth in February with his regular Big Apple crew. The new CD will have a fall national release. Serrato also wrote for and accompanied underground cabaret and off-Broadway performers. Education is a parallel passion for Serrato, who has degrees in music (Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts) and urban education (Adelphi University). Since the 1980s he’s taught adult ESL. He taught in various New York boroughs. Since resettling in Omaha five years ago he’s been an adjunct instructor at Metropolitan Community College’s south campus. “I love teaching ESL. I love working with international students,” he said. “It’s taught me to respect other people, especially immigrants. I’ve always been interested in other cultures, other languages. It was a natural fit for me to migrate to teaching ESL and to pursue it to the end that I have.

“I’m a great believer in bilingual education.” He’s distressed state funding cutbacks threaten something so impactful for students. “There’s a tremendous amount of satisfaction in knowing we’re helping them to acculturateintegrate into the larger scene.” He’s outraged by draconian Trump administration measures against illegal immigrants and by Trump’s own hateful rhetoric on immigration. Serrato has immigrant students compose essays about their new lives in America. He’s moved by their stories. “It inspires me that I can guide them and give them an opportunity to release their emotions and feelings. It’s like nobody’s ever asked them before. Some of the papers are so remarkable. They spill it all out – eloquently, too – their feelings about being immigrants, living here, the difficulties, the good things.” Last year he organized a program at Gallery 72 in which his Omaha students read personal accounts that his New York students wrote in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that brought down the Twin Towers. Serrato and his NYC students were only a few blocks from ground zero that fateful day. They watched the tragedy unfold before their eyes. “I had my international adult students write about their impressions of that day. They were from all these different countries. They wrote eloquently about what they witnessed. I saved their essays and decided to turn it into

EYEWITNESS: New York Testimonies. Though they all experienced the same event, we hear it filtered through the sensibilities of their diverse cultures.” Serrato’s “Broadway Electronic” and “Blues Elegy” compositions provided ambient music for the readings. “I was very proud of how that event turned out. My Metro students did a great job.” He said the international student mix he teaches “makes me feel like I’m back in New York.” His cozy southeast Omaha home is a tightly packed trove. Framed posters and album covers adorn walls. Photos of students, family, friends and jam cats are pinned to boards. Stacks of books occupy tables. His music life began in Omaha, where he showed early muscial aptitude and formally studied piano. “I began doing talent contests around town. Schmoller & Mueller piano store had a Saturday morning talent show on the radio. I won first prize a couple times.” The Creighton Prep grad was brought up the son of a single mother who divorced when he was three. “She was a pretty remarkable woman considering what she had to go through. There were no resources in those days for single moms.” The Chicano artist has indulged his Latino roots via study and travel. He made pilgrimages to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to steep himself in boss and samba. His tune “Blues in Rio” originated there. A YouTube video produced by musician

friend Donald Mohr features that tune matched with photos from Serrato’s Brazilian sojourns. Bumming around Europe, he made it to Spain and grew “smitten with bullfighting’s art and pageantry.” “I began returning to Spain annually for the long taurine season as an aficionado. I’d lock up my New York apartment and fly off. My life as an artist’s model and bookstore manager in Greenwich Village made it easily possible. Such was the Boho (bohemian) life.” His Latino roots music and world jazz immersion influences following a classical music track. He gave recitals in Omaha. Then he heard intoxicating sounds on his family’s short wave radio that changed his life. “I thought I wanted to be a concert pianist until I started hearing recordings by Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson, whose records were being spun out of Chicago. I was very like blown away by these great jazz pianists. “Hearing that stuff opened up a big door and window into other possibilities.” Harbor Conservatory in Spanish Harlem became his mecca. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music composition with a concentration on Latin music styles. “It’s like the repository of the jazz and Latin music in New York after the World War II diaspora. It’s an incredible place. You walk into that school and you walk into another world, of Latin jazz music, which I love.” His intensive study of Spanish has extended to Latin literature and art. He cites congo player Candido Camero as “a great inspiration.” “He could play anything. Candido made a record, Mambo Moves, with Erroll Garner, one of my favorite pianists. They play such great duets. I’ve always loved that record. I’ve tried to incorporate some of those ideas into my own music. “I compose pieces in the bossa style, though filtered through a New York jazz lens.” Just as Serrato’s never done learning, he’s never done teaching, “I love education. NEBRASKA AMONG 7 STATES SUING FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO END DACA Nebraska is among seven states suing the federal government to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program protecting undocumented immigrants brought into the country as children from deportation. The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday, May 1st, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, "is about the rule of law, not the wisdom of any particular immigration policy," according to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is leading the multi-state coalition. Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson, who last summer was among 10 state attorneys general who signed a letter asking President Donald Trump to end the program, said the lawsuit against the federal government seeks "to prevent the unconstitutional use of executive order to create immigration rights." Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, South Carolina and West Virginia joined Texas and Nebraska as plaintiffs in the lawsuit against several federal agency chiefs leading the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the U.S. Border Patrol. The states have asked the court to declare the 2012 Obama administration executive order creating the DACA program unlawful, or to prevent the federal government from renewing or issuing new permits to so-called Dreamers in the future. The latest lawsuit comes eight months after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the administration's plan to end DACA by March 5, 2018, calling it unconstitutional and a circumvention of Congress' role to enact legislation pertaining to immigration. Congress failed to act, however, and in the meantime, federal courts have halted the administration's plan to end the program, with one judge ordering the Department of Homeland Security to resume processing renewals and applications. That leaves more than 3,000 undocumented Dreamers living, working and attending school in Nebraska hanging in the balance, among an estimated 690,000 undocumented persons in the U.S. protected from deportation through DACA.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION MAY TARGET IMMIGRANT WHO USED GOVERNMENT BENEFITS The Trump administration is considering making it harder for foreigners living in the United States to get permanent residency if they or their American-born children use public benefits such as food assistance, in a move that could sharply restrict legal immigration. The Department of Homeland Security has drafted rules seen by Reuters that would allow immigration officers to scrutinize a potential immigrant’s use of certain taxpayer-funded public benefits to determine if they could become a public burden. Receiving such benefits could weigh against an applicant, even if they were for an immigrant’s U.S. citizen children, according to the document. Current guidance instructs immigration officers to look at a narrow range of public benefits in trying to determine whether someone is likely to become a burden, specifically directing officers not to consider most noncash benefits, such as government food assistance programs or preschool programs. But the Trump administration wants to expand this to include people who rely on crucial non-cash programs like the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Medicaid, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The experts and officials said they were also worried that the proposed changes would dissuade immigrants from using services to which they are entitled. The proposed rule has not yet been published and may not be implemented until it becomes final, which will take additional time.

NEBRASKA ENTRE LOS 7 ESTADOS QUE DEMANDAN AL GOBIERNO POR DACA Nebraska es uno de los 7 estados que están demandando al gobierno federal para que termine con el programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia, el cual protege de la deportación a los inmigrantes indocumentados quienes llegaron con sus padres a este país cuando eran niños. La demanda, fechada el 1 de mayo, en el tribunal Federal del Distrito Sur de Texas, “es sobre el reglamento de la ley, y no sobre el juicio de cualquier política de inmigración”, de acuerdo con el Fiscal General de Texas Ken Paxton quien dirige la coalición multi-estatal. El Fiscal General de Nebraska, Doug Peterson, quien el verano pasado fue uno de los 10 fiscales generales quienes firmaron una carta solicitando al Presidente Donald Trump que acabara con el programa, dijo que la demanda es contra el gobierno federal y busca “prevenir el uso inconstitucional de la acción ejecutiva de crear derechos inmigratorios”. THE NEBRASKAN TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS (TPS) Committee Group and the Imminent Threat of TPS Termination - Part 2 BY: JOSÉ RODRÍGUEZ.

lthough members of the committee such as Vasquez and Molina have an optimistic position despite the challenges the lack of participation presents them, the insecurity and anguish become more acute. This is because the Donald Trump administration has announced its discontent with the TPS program and has set a date to finish the program for Salvadoran beneficiaries. This would mean leaving around 195,000 Salvadorans on September 9, 2019 in illegal status and on the verge of deportation ultimately. To better understand the impact that this decision would have if it continues, it is necessary to understand what is the TPS and how much population it influences. Part of the Immigration Act of 1990, the TPS was established by Congress to grant temporary permission to reside and work in the United States for immigrants from different nations in crisis. These crises can be caused by an armed conflict in development, natural disaster or other extraordinary and temporary conditions. Since March 1, 2003, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other government agencies such as the Department State, designate a nation for TPS, which is experiencing a crisis and does not affect the interests of the United States. The Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security designates TPS periods from 6 to 18 months. These periods can be extended according to the situation and improvement that the foreign nation is experiencing regardless of the number of extensions. Citizens qualified for TPS of a certain nation must submit an application and pay some required fees to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and/or comply with the appropriate re-registration dates and processes. This is where the position of the Trump administration is worrying for the beneficiaries of TPS. Currently there are ten nations under the TPS: El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. El Salvador, Honduras and Haiti are the nations with the largest number of beneficiaries. According to USCIS, the TPS for El Salvador, Haiti, Nepal, Nicaragua and Sudan will end next year while the other countries have a status of “extended until,” with Syria being the only country with a “designated until” status. With this data it will be very interesting to see what decisions are made regarding countries like Honduras, with which it has not been decided if their TPS will be terminated or extended. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen announced his decision to end the TPS for citizens of Nepal with an extended date of 12 months to grant the opportunity for an orderly transition. With this decision the TPS for Nepal citizens will officially end on June 24, 2019. Nicaragua and Haiti will be another important antecedents to see what awaits the Salvadoran population, since these countries are already in their last period and will face illegal status once the dates arrive in 2019. This is where the main problem comes to surface, which is the destiny of all these families that have established roots in the United States thanks to their TPS. Not only have they worked and contributed to the country for years, but they also have properties, businesses, positions where they currently work, and most likely children who were born in the country and are now involved in higher education and labor force. On the one hand, the decision to terminate TPS for certain nations affects and destabilizes each family by asking them to abandon everything they have fought and worked for years, but at the same time, it will affect employers and businesses of all kinds too. According to a study called Temporary Protection Status in the United States: The Experiences of Honduran and Salvadoran Immigrants conducted by Dr. Cecilia Menjívar of the University of Kansas in 2017, “80.3% of survey respondents pay income taxes, including 79.3% of those who are self-employed. They have contributed to social security for an avg. of 15.4 years and 90% file taxes every year.” The study found that 33.6% of men and 29.9% of women surveyed live in their own homes. This data reflects that the decision to terminate the TPS program for countries such as El Salvador, Haiti and Honduras would imply not only problems for the beneficiaries, but also for business and the country’s economy. Since these people would lose their jobs and roles in society, there would be the need to find a presence to replace them. That workforce and holes created by the decision to end the TPS will not only be difficult to find and overcome it, but it will take years to do it. Organizations such as CARECEN, the TPS National Alliance, NDLON and the Nebraska TPS committee want to communicate these ideas and facts across the country to achieve change. But greater participation from the beneficiaries is needed to achieve a forceful change and finally alleviate the fear and frustration of deportation.

Se trata de el Clásico Anual de Fútbol en Beneficio del Hospital Shrine, de Nebraska. Este será el evento número 25 en su historia. Sus inicio ocurrieron en el año 1993, cuando un grupo de personas tuvieron la visión de reunir a los mejores 40 jugadores varones y las mejores 40 jugadoras mujeres de Nebraska, para poder realizar una actividad deportiva que permitiera recaudar fondos en beneficio del hospital filantrópico infantil Shriners. Actualmente son 3 los hospitales Shriners, y todos ellos buscan proveer servicios de calidad a nivel mundial, en el área de la pediatría ortopédica, médula espinal, atención de quemaduras, labio leporino y paladar hendido. Sus servicios se enfocan a niños menores de 18 años, sin importar la capacidad de pago del paciente o la familia. Cabe resaltar que desde 1922,

los Shriners se han preocupado por más de 1 millón de niños. En Nebraska, los tres Centros Shrine asisten aproximadamente a 1000 niños anualmente. En relación a los jugadores convocados para los juegos planeados en esta actividad, el objetivo sigue siendo contar con puras estrellas en el balompié local. Así, los jugadores son nominados por sus entrenadores según diversas categorías. Primero analizan sus habilidades y rendimiento en el campo. Posteriormente, su rendimiento en el aula y participación en la comunidad. Por último toman en consideración el comportamiento general como ciudadanos. Una vez que se reciben las nominaciones, los entrenadores se reúnen para seleccionar sus equipos. Las listas para el clásico de este 2018 se ha establecido. La fecha del encuentro será este próximo 10 de junio, en el estadio Morrison. El partido femenil será en punto de la 1 de la tarde. En tanto, los hombres se enfrentarán a las 3 de la tarde.

Losing Independence Seniors face many different challenges when entering the aging stage. For instance, according to a 2011 report there are 8.4 million seniors in the United States who depend on other people for transportation. Millions of senior citizens across the country already struggle to get around without a car. Senior drivers eventually lose their ability to drive themselves due to their cognition decreasing. On the other hand, traffic signs and signals may not be appropriate for the vision capability of seniors. For example, the font size of road signs, size and brightness of lighted signals, and many other features that can make roads less safe for elderly drivers. According to a study done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approximately 586 adults of the ages 65 and older suffer severe injuries everyday as a result of car crashes. The Intercultural Senior Center provides transportation services for seniors who have lost their ability to drive and as a result become isolated not able to meet their basic needs. De acuerdo a los resultados de un estudio hecho en el 2011, en Estados Unidos hay un promedio de 8.4 millones de personas de la tercera edad que dependen de otras personas para transportación. Millones de personas de la tercera edad ya están sufriendo las limitaciones que trae el no poder transportarse por sí mismos para cubrir sus necesidades del diario. Eventualmente, las personas mayores pierden su habilidad de transportarse por sí mismos debido a que la cognición disminuye con la edad. Otros factores que se deben considerar son las señales y anuncios de tráfico. Muchos de los anuncios y señales de tráfico son muy pequeños y sin color haciéndolos difíciles de distinguir y de leer durante el proceso de manejo. De acuerdo a un estudio realizado por los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC), se estima que aproximadamente 586 adultos de 65 años o más sufren daños severos a diario por causa de accidentes de tráfico. El Centro Intercultural Para Mayores ofrece servicios de transportación para las personas de la tercera edad que han perdido la habilidad de manejar y están aislados sin poder cubrir sus necesidades básicas.
