his Sunday, November 1, marks the start of Open Enrollment when you can visit HealthCare.gov and sign up for affordable, quality health coverage. For current Marketplace consumers, this is the time when you can come back, shop and compare your current plan with others available in your area for 2016, and select the plan that’s right for you. You can choose to stay in your current plan if it’s still available – or – pick a new plan.

Plans on the Health Insurance Marketplace change every year and, because of that, new, better and more affordable plans might be available in your area.

Here’s what you need to know: It pays to shop. There may be plans available that offer the services you need, include more doctors, or save you money. Last year, consumers who shopped and switched

plans saved nearly $400. And this year, more than 7 out of 10 current consumers will be able to find a plan with premiums less than $75.

You can visit HealthCare.gov now and compare your current plan against other plans in your area and see an estimate of how much other plans cost and learn about coverage options.

Don’t forget that you need to take action ahead of the December 15 deadline for January 1 coverage. If you are currently enrolled in a Marketplace plan, come back, update your info and make sure you have the best plan to meet your health and budget needs between November 1 and the December 15 deadline for these changes to start on January 1.

NUESTRAS HISTORIAS, NUESTRAS VOCES PRIMERA CONVENCIÓN POLÍTICA LATINA DEL SUR DE OMAHA Por Cheril Lee

E

l Heartland Workers Center ofrecerá la primera Convención Política Latina el domingo 8 de noviembre en el Livestock Building de 3 a 5:30 p.m.

“Nos tomamos el tiempo necesario durante el verano para revisar en los ocho distritos en donde vive la mayoría de la población latina en Omaha. Además llevamos a cabo una valoración de la comunidad para obtener datos e información sobre los problemas que más importan a las personas”, dijo Sergio Sosa, Director Ejecutivo de Heartland Workers Center (HWC).

Además de ayudar al HWC a conocer más sobre el tipo de cuestiones a nivel estatal y federal que son importantes para los inmigrantes latinos, la valoración de la comunidad también sirvió para ayudar al HWC a comenzar a identificar y organizar a los líderes de cada distrito.

De entre estas personas, los que pertenecen a cada distrito escogen a dos inmigrantes que representaran a sus vecindarios y distritos.

“Hemos estado dando un seguimiento con las personas que han completado las valoraciones de la comunidad pues queremos que participen. Queremos obtener toda la información que nos sea posible para poder presentarla a todos”, dijo Abbie Kretz, Organizadora Principal para Heartland Workers Center.

Los líderes de cada distrito estarán presentes en la convención política y se dirigirán al público. Alrededor de 30 personas

de cada distrito también estarán presentes y compartirán sus historias. De ahí el nombre: “Nuestras Historias, Nuestras Voces: Recreando las Redes y Estructuras Sociales en el Sur de Omaha” (Our Stories, Our Voices: Recreating Social Fabrics and Networks in South Omaha). Hablarán sobre los problemas que tanto les preocupan a todos. Estas son historias que el Heartland Workers Center escuchó durante la valoración, historias escuchadas durante la valoración.

“El consultante compartirá los resultados desde un primer vistazo de los datos de la valoración de la comunidad. Después Sergio Sosa comentará sobre esta primera serie de información”, dijo Kretz.

Sosa aclara que el Heartland Workers Center es una organización apartidista. Él comenta que el enfoque de este evento es enfrentar y ojala poder ayudar a reducir los problemas sociales en el Sur de Omaha, incluyendo cuestiones como la pobreza y la igualdad latina.

2. Construir una plataforma comunitaria basada en los grandes problemas encontrados en la valoración, en donde los líderes comenzarán a buscar soluciones para estos grandes problemas para así generar un cambio.

3. Involucrar a los líderes y usar la plataforma comunitaria. El HWC nuevamente realizará la Campaña Sacar el Voto (Get out the Vote) para las elecciones presidenciales del 2016.

“Queremos fomentar la participación civil durante todo el año, no solamente que las personas voten cuando haya una elección”, dijo Sosa. Él dijo que es importante que los electores se aseguren de que los candidatos lleven a cabo lo que dicen que van a realizar. Sosa piensa que es momento de que las personas se responsabilicen de sus acciones. Él dijo llegará y hablará a nombre de los latinos.

“Necesitamos hablar por nosotros mismos y organizarnos. Nuestra meta principal es unir a las personas de la comunidad desde los vecindarios para que puedan reunirse y darse cuenta del poder que tienen para llevar a cabo un cambio”, nos dijo.

Kretz explicó que el Heartland Workers Center ha llevado a cabo la Campaña Sacar el Voto durante los últimos tres ciclos elec-

torales. Ella dijo que se dieron cuenta que conectar a los electores con problemas específicos les motiva más a votar. En Omaha, la petición sobre el salario mínimo y que los beneficiarios del DACA no podían tener una licencia para conducir eran los grandes problemas que encendieron un interés en las personas y les llevó a participar.

Apreciaron un incremento en el interés sobre las elecciones y un aumento general en cuanto a la participación de la comunidad.

Kretz dijo que las cosas no deben solamente ser votar y olvidarlo. Ella dijo que la participación civil tiene que llegar a más allá de las elecciones.

“Es sobre que los oficiales elegidos sean responsabilizados y que se deben realizar reuniones con dichos oficiales para que se lleve a cabo un cambio real. Tenemos las habilidades necesarias para hacer las cosas por nosotros mismos. Tenemos que encontrar la manera de que la voz de la comunidad sea parte de la toma de decisiones. Necesitamos que las voces dentro de la comunidad lleguen a las personas en los altos niveles”, dijo Kretz.

“The consultant will share the findings from the first look at the community assessment data. Then Sergio Sosa will weigh in on this first wave of information,” Kretz said.

Sosa is quick to point out that Heartland Workers Center is a non-partisan organization. He said the focus of this event is to address and hopefully ultimately help reduce social problems in South Omaha including issues with poverty and Latino equality.

Nebraska Senator Tanya Cook, from District 13, is the keynote speaker for the political convention. She will talk about minorities, not just Latinos and the political power and influence that can be built when all minorities work together as a group.

Sosa sees three positive reasons to hold the South Omaha Latino Political Convention: 1. To build collective power – Precinct leaders can begin to connect among and between each other.

2. To build a community platform based on the major issues from the assessment, where leaders will begin to look for solutions to these major issues to build change.

3. To engage these leaders and use the community platform. The HWC will again conduct a Get out the Vote Campaign for the 2016 Presidential Elections.

“We want to encourage civic engagement all year round, not just have people vote when there is an election,” Sosa said.

He said it is important that voters make sure candidates do what they say they are going to do. Sosa feels it’s also time that

he Heartland Workers Center will offer South Omaha’s first ever Latino Political Convention on Sun., Nov. 8 at the Livestock Building from 3-5:30 p.m.

“We took the time over the summer to canvas eight precincts where the majority of the Latino population lives in Omaha. And we conducted a community assessment to collect data on the issues these people care about the most,” said Sergio Sosa, Executive Director of Heartland Workers Center.

In addition to helping the HWC learn what kind of state and federal issues are important to Latino immigrants, the community assessment also has served to help HWC start indentifying and organizing leaders from each precinct. From these individuals, the people from each precinct will pick two immigrants who will represent their neighborhoods and precincts.

“We have been following up with people who have completed the community assessment because we want them involved as well.

We want to get as much information as we can back to people from this assessment,” said Abbie Kretz, Senior Organizer for Heartland Workers Center.

Precinct leaders will be present at the political convention and will address the audience.

About 30 people from each precinct will also be in attendance and will share their stories.

Hence the title “Our Stories, Our Voices: Recreating Social Fabrics and Networks in South Omaha.” They will talk about the problems that concern them and their fellow constituents. These are stories that the Heartland

people take responsibility for themselves.

He said no one is going to come in and speak up for the Latino voters.

“We need to speak up ourselves and organize ourselves. Our main goal is to bring people from the community together form those neighborhoods so they can see each other and realize the power they have to affect change,” he said.

Kretz explained that the Heartland Workers Center has held a Get out the Vote Campaign during the last three election cycles. And she said they learned that connecting voters to specific issues gets them more excited about voting. Around Omaha, the minimum wage petition and DACA recipients not having driver’s licenses were major issues that sparked an interest in people and got them involved.

They saw an in increased interest in the elections and an overall increase involvement in community. Kretz said it’s not just about voting and forgetting. She said civic engagement has to go beyond elections.

“It’s about holding elected officials accountable and continuing to meet with them so real change can take place. We have the skills necessary to do things for ourselves. We have to figure out how we get the voice of the community involved in making decisions. We need to get the grassroots voices up to those at the grass tops level,” Kretz said.

Según explicó el Dr. José Miguel Lemus, presidente de dicho capítulo:”La Red empezó hace aproximadamente 9 años, como una iniciativa del gobierno de México, de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores y en particular del Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior. Ellos se dieron cuenta de que había muchos mexicanos viviendo en el exterior y que muchos de ellos estaban altamente calificados. No solamente en el esquema tradicional de migración, sino gente con licenciaturas, maestrías, doctorados y post-doctorados. La idea de formar una Red era que ésos mexicanos que estaban en diversas partes del mundo se unieran y se reconocieran entre sí y que pudieran devolverle a México, algo de lo que México tanto les ha dado”.

El Dr. Lemus comentó que actualmente existen aproximadamente unos 40 Capítulos y que 20 de ellos se encuentran en los Estados Unidos, “aunque también los hay en partes tan lejanas como Moscú y Shanghai”.

Contrariamente a lo que algunos pensarían, la Red Global MX no es manejada directamente por el gobierno mexicano, tal como lo señaló la Lic. Lizete Reyes, quien colabora con el Capítulo Nebraska-Iowa como enlace con el Consulado de México en Omaha: “La Red Global de Mexicanos básicamente es un programa que surgió a iniciativa del gobierno de México, pero no le pertenece al gobierno. Es decir, cuando los capítulos se forman, cada uno de ellos tiene autonomía así que el gobierno no interviene en la toma de decisiones y los proyectos surgen del interior de cada capítulo”.

Reyes agregó que dependencias gubernamentales como la Secretaría de Economía, la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores a través del Instituto y el CONACYT (Consejo Nacional para la Ciencia y la Tecnología), se encuentran involucradas únicamente en materia de orientación a cada Capítulo según sean sus proyectos.

En ése sentido, el Dr. Lemus quién es catedrático de la Universidad de Creighton, consideró que pese a que cada Capítulo tiene sus propios estatutos, en especial el Capítulo NebraskaIowa que él preside, “se encuentra muy agradecido con el apoyo de la Cónsul Guadalupe Sánchez Salazar quien nos ha compartido sus contactos tanto en el estado de Iowa como en otras ciudades de Nebraska como Kearney y Lexington”.

Comunidades con las cuales el Dr. Armando de Alba del Centro Médico de la Universidad de Nebraska se encuentra familiarizado también, puesto que colabora directamente con la Cónsul Sánchez Salazar y el Consulado Mexicano en programas como la Ventanilla de Salud y la Semana Binacional

de Salud, y de ahí que su participación como vicepresidente del Capítulo Nebraska-Iowa sea tan importante: “Los que estamos en la Red tenemos en común en primer lugar, el amor por México. Esto es lo que nos une como esencia y después, la pasión por ayudar a nuestra comunidad. La comunidad mexicana en el exterior no deja a un lado sus raíces ni su esencia, y lo que se trata de hacer con la Red es crear e identificar oportunidades que también generen lo que es un beneficio hacia los mexicanos en nuestro país, así como a la comunidad en la que actualmente viven”.

La academia y la investigación, son dos de las áreas de interés del Capítulo Nebraska-Iowa en las cuales sus miembros ya están trabajando en un proyecto de servicio de aprendizaje, para que las próximas generaciones no pierdan el uso del idioma español.

“Los estudios de sociolingüística indican que en la tercera generación se pierde el idioma del grupo poblacional que inmigra”, dijo el Dr. Lemus añadiendo que es fundamental que las madres de familia realicen tareas como la de leerle en voz alta en español a sus hijos en edad escolar, “porque ése tipo de cosas son mecanismos que les permiten a los niños no solamente ser funcionales sino también tener elementos de identidad, de dignidad y de pertenencia cultural, que son fundamentales para el desarrollo de cualquier persona”.

Tal proyecto se consolidará gracias a la creación de un manual que se pueda compartir con instituciones educativas y comunitarias. Con acciones como ésa, el Capítulo NebraskaIowa de la Red Global MX busca expandirse y está aceptando a nuevos miembros que estén interesados en poner a consideración de la mesa directiva sus candidatura.

“Los inmigrantes son una riqueza a donde quiera que van y a donde van no solamente llevan sus brazos sino también su cerebro y su corazón y así enriquecen el lugar a donde van”, concluyó el Dr. Lemus.

CENTRO LABORAL: NUESTRAS HISTORIAS, NUESTRAS VOCES La comunidad del sur de Omaha y sus delegados presentarán los asuntos y problemas mas importantes a autoridades gubernamentales durante la primera convención política, Nuestras Historias, Nuestras Voces, este domingo, 8 de noviembre, en el Edificio Livestock Exchange, de 3-5:30 p.m.

El personal del Centro Laboral estuvieron caminando y tocando puertas en el sur de Omaha este verano para escuchar las preocupaciones de los miembros de nuestra comunidad y unirlos sobre asuntos y problemas que un grupo de líderes comunitarios darán prioridad en preparación para las elecciones presidenciales del 2016.

El objetivo principal es entender las necesidades de los vecindarios y construir comunidades fuertes al conectar líderes que crean en el mejoramiento de sus comunidades con una acción colectiva.

Estos líderes ayudarán a identificar asuntos comunes que muchos miembros de la comunidad del sur de Omaha encaran día con día, y juntarán a sus vecinos para resolver problemas como la mala condición de las calles, el crimen y la baja participación política, a través de una discusión comunal con oficiales electos.

Esto permitirá a los miembros de la comunidad del sur de Omaha alzar su voz sobre sus preocupaciones y hablar por sus comunidades, y demandar la responsabilidad de aquellos que tienen el control político y económico en nuestra ciudad.

DÍA DE MUERTOS EN EL MUSEO LATINO Rituales, Mitos y Tradiciones es el nombre de la exhibición de El Museo Latino que celebra la tradición hispana del Día de Muertos, abierta todos los días hasta el 14 de noviembre.

Combinando los elementos de las tradiciones azteca y católica, el Día de Muertos celebra la partida de los seres queridos con flores, velas, incienso, dulces y platillos favoritos en pequeños altares, llamados ofrendas.

Venga a El Museo Latino a admirar la gran ofrenda, un altar en honor de los muertos, mientras una película bilingüe explica el Día de Muertos.

La tienda de El Museo Latino también tiene papel picado, una tradicional artesanía de papel cortado, así como calaveritas pintadas a mano y algunas hechas de azúcar y chocolate.

El museo tendrá un taller de papel picado de 12:30-1:30 p.m., el 16 de noviembre.

LA POBLACIÓN LATINA HA CRECIDO EN EL CONDADO DE DOUGLAS El Centro Hispano Pew reporta que la población latina ha crecido en un 87% en el condado de Douglas, un 116% en el condado de Sarpy, y un 113% en el condado de Pottawattamie. El condado de Douglas y Sarpy cuentan con mas de 69,000 residentes latinos.

Los latinos en el área metropolitana de Omaha experimentan un nivel de pobreza mayor: 13% están en la pobreza en el condado de Pottawattamie, y 28% en Dodge, 23% en Douglas, 15% en Sarpy, y 36% en el condado de Saunders en Nebraska, comparado con 7.6% en Iowa, 8.1% en Nebraska y 10.5% nacionalmente.

THE NEBRASKA-IOWA CHAPTER OF RED GLOBAL MX FOCUSES ITS EFFORTS ON MAKING SURE SPANISH IS STILL USED AS A LANGUAGE B Y M A R I NA R O S A D O

a Red Global MX (antes Red de Talentos Mexicanos) consolidó el Capítulo Nebraska-Iowa este 2015, luego de que sus actividades se iniciaran formalmente en marzo con una decena de integrantes representando al sector salud y al de educación, entre otros.

Red Global MX (formerly Red de Talentos Mexicanos) consolidated its Nebraska-Iowa Chapter in 2015 after formally beginning its activities in March with ten members representing the health and education sectors, among others.

Dr. Jose Miguel Lemus, President for the Chapter explains: “Red Global MX started around nine years ago as an initiative of the Mexican government, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs and the Institute for Mexicans Abroad. They realized that there were many Mexicans living abroad and that several of them were highly qualified. People with bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees, PhDs and post-doctoral studies. The idea of creating a network came to be so that Mexicans all over the world could come together as one to give back to Mexico a little part of what Mexico has given them.”

Dr. Lemus said that there’s currently forty Chapters for Red Global MX and that twenty of them are located in the United States, “although there are Chapters in faraway locations such as Moscow and Shanghai.”

Contrary to what some might think, Red Global MX is not directly managed by the Mexican government, as stated

by Lizet Reyes who works together with the Nebraska-Iowa Chapter as liaison with the Mexican Consulate in Omaha: “Basically, Red Global MX is a program started by the initiative of the Mexican government, but it does not belong to the government. That is, chapters are created with full autonomy and the government does not take part in any of the decisionmaking and all projects are created from within each chapter.”

Reyes added that government agencies such as the Secretary of Economy, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs through the Institute and the CONACYT (National Council for Science and Technology), are only involved in offering some guidance to each of the chapters according to their projects.

On that note, Dr. Lemus – who teaches at the University of Creighton – considered that even though each chapter has its own bylaws, the Nebraska-Iowa chapter where he is President “is very thankful for the support of Consul Guadalupe Sanchez Salazar who has shared with us their network of contacts in Iowa as well as from other cities in Nebraska such as Kearney and Lexington.”

These are communities that Dr. Armando de Alba from the Medical Center of the University of Nebraska is very familiar with thanks to his direct collaboration with Consul

Sanchez Salazar and the Mexican Consulate on programs such as the Health Booth and the Binational Health Week, which makes his work as Vice President for the NebraskaIowa Chapter even more important: “Those of us who are part of Red Global MX have many things in common, the most of important of them being our love for Mexico. This is what brings us together, along with our passion for helping our community. The community of Mexicans abroad is aware of its origins and its essence, and what Red Global MX tries to do is to create and identify opportunities that can generate benefits for Mexicans in our country, as well as for the community where they currently live.”

Academics and research are two important areas for the Nebraska-Iowa Chapter, and its members are currently at work on a project for a learning service so that future generations do not stop using the Spanish language.

“Sociolinguistic studies indicate that for members of the third generation, the language of the group that immigrates is lost,” said Dr. Lemus, adding that it is critical that parents help by reading out loud in Spanish to their kids, “because this type of mechanisms allows children not only to be functional but also to create a sense of identity, dignity and cultural belonging, elements that are fundamental to the development of any individual.”

Said project will be brought to life thanks to the creation of a manual that can be shared with educational and communitarian institutions. With efforts such as this one, the Nebraska-Iowa Chapter of Red Global MX seeks to expand and they’re currently accepting new members who are interested in presenting their nomination before the board of directors.

“Immigrants share the richness of their culture wherever they go, always with open arms, mind and heart, enriching the places they go to,” concluded Dr. Lemus.

HWC: OUR STORIES, OUR VOICES South Omaha Community and their Delegates will present their most important issues and problems to government officials during the first political convention, Our Stories, Our Voices, this Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Livestock Exchange Building, from 3-5:30 p.m.

The staff of the Heartland Workers Center were walking door to door, or canvassing, in South Omaha this summer to listen the concerns of the members of our communities and bring them together around issues and problems that a collective neighborhood leadership will prioritize in preparation of the 2016 presidential election.

The prime objective was to understand neighborhood needs and build stronger communities by connecting leaders who believe in bettering their communities through collective action.

These leaders helped to identify common issues that many members of South Omaha community face on a daily basis and will bring their neighbors together to solve problems like poor street conditions, crime and low political participation through communal discussion with elected officials.

This will enable South Omaha community members to voice their concerns, and speak up for their community and demand accountability from those who hold political and economic power in our city.

DAY OF THE DEAD AT EL MUSEO LATINO Ritual, Myth and Traditions is El Museo Latino’s exhibit to celebrate the Hispanic tradition of Day of the Dead, open every day until Nov. 14.

Combining elements from indigenous Aztec and Catholic traditions, the Day of the Dead celebrates departed loved ones through flowers, candles, incense, candy and favorite foods left at small altars, called “ofrendas.“ Come to El Museo Latino to check out a large ofrenda, an altar to honor the dead, as well as a bi-lingual film explaining Day of the Dead.

The museum’s gift shop also has “papel picado,” a traditional cut-paper craft, as well as hand-painted skulls and some made of sugar and chocolate.

The museum will have a “papel picado” workshop from 12:30- 1:30 p.m., on Nov. 9 and 16.

Poetry reading and discussion will be about “The songbook is your heart: the Aztec poetry of Nezahualcoyotl,” on Tues., Nov. 10, at 7 p.m.

In conjunction with the exhibits, El Museo Latino develops educational programs that include lectures, slide presentations, films, art classes, workshops, demonstrations, art history classes, gallery talks, guided visits, and dance classes.

Some of the programs are age specific for K-12, some for post secondary students, and others are for an adult audience. In addition, El Museo Latino is a resource and a center for Latino studies in the Midwest.

HISPANIC POPULATION HAS GROWN IN DOUGLAS COUNTY The Pew Hispanic Center reports the Latino population has grown by 87% in Douglas County, 116% in Sarpy County and 113% in Pottawattamie County.
