“

La tradición de Los Días de Los Muertos sirve como un recordatorio significativo de la conexión entre los vivos y los que ya han partido”, nos dice José García.

“Es esta tradición la que representa una fusión transcultural de costumbres y la fe católica. Cada una es una expresión de la creencia en la naturaleza inmortal del alma”.

La Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands presentará un festival gratuito sobre el Día de los Muertos del 17 de octubre al 7 de noviembre, curada por García, un historiador, así como su esposa la artista Linda García.

La quinta exhibición y celebración anual Los Días de Los Muertos se llevará a cabo por primera vez en la Catedral de Santa Cecilia y en su contiguo Centro Cultural. El Cathedral Arts Project será anfitrión del festival.

Los García han pedido a docenas de artistas que empleen una gran variedad de medios visuales para expresar los sentimientos y símbolos asociados con esta tradición mexicana en que se recuerda a quienes han partido.

Las ofrendas, el arte, las conferencias, los talleres de trabajo, los cuentos, las lecturas de poesía, los monólogos del teatro en vivo y las presentaciones musicales y de danza contribuirán algo en honor al Día de los Muertos.

La exhibición estará instalada en la Galería Sunderland del Centro durante toda la duración del festival.

Para la recepción de apertura del sábado 17 de octubre que se llevará a acabo de 6 a 9 p.m., los patrocinadores podrán seguir un camino entre la Catedral, donde están instaladas las ofrendas, y el Centro Cultural, donde se ubica la instalación.

El tema para el festival de este año es la caléndula, la flor tradicional utilizada durante el Día de Muertos. La caléndula es llamada Cem-

poalxóchitl en el dialecto indígena Uto-Azteca y usualmente se incorpora en las ofrendas o en los escenarios creados por las personas. Por ello el festival de este año se titula “El Teatro Cempoalxóchitl” como homenaje a su histórico lugar y a su dramático uso.

“El enfoque está concentrado en el uso de la caléndula para establecer el escenario para honrar y recordar a los seres queridos que han partido, sean familiares, amigos, conocidos o ancestros”, dijo Linda García.

Por ello las ofrendas instaladas en la Catedral incorporan la caléndula, la cual, según comenta José García, “simboliza el breve periodo del hombre en la tierra”. Él agrega: “Durante miles de años ha sido utilizada para representar la esencia de las memorias cruciales para mantener un camino de recuerdo entre el alma y los vivos”. Él dice que dentro de la Catedral, en su Capilla Nash, una ofrenda-altar de la comunidad “presentará una oportunidad a los feligreses de Santa Cecilia para que coloquen fotografías en memoria de quienes ya han partido. Estos tributos y ofrendas privadas representan tanto las antiguas tradiciones como las costumbres modernas que relatan la perpetua relación entre la fe, la familia y la historia”.

Un par de conferencias que comenzaran a la 1:30 p.m. el domingo 18 de octubre en el Centro Cultural discutirán los orígenes y el significado de las flores y otros objetos en el arte Mesoamericano, así como el paralelismo entre cómo los egipcios y los mexicanos consideran como un arte importante el recordar a quienes han fallecido.

Para seguir con el tema de las ofrendas en el entorno teatral, un programa de Ofrendas Verbales: Monólogos Teatrales, dirigido por Scott Working, presentará trabajos originales

de autores teatrales que serán leídos por actores. Los monólogos, acompañados de música de Michael Murphy, se realizarán el sábado 24 a las 6:30 p.m., además del domingo 1ro de noviembre a la 1:30 p.m. en la Capilla de Nuestra Señora de Nebraska en la Catedral.

El internacionalmente reconocido cuentacuentos y mimo Antonio Rocha se presentará el sábado 24 de octubre a las 7 p.m. en la capilla. Durante el mismo sábado se realizará a las 10 a.m. un taller de trabajo sobre calaveras de azúcar en el Centro.

Los poetas se presentarán en el Centro el domingo 25 de octubre a la 1:30 p.m.

El final durante el sábado 7 de noviembre y la ceremonia de clausura se llevarán a cabo en la Catedral de las 7 a las 9 p.m. y serán enmarcadas por la presentación de la Mexican Dance Academy de Nebraska.

Linda García dice que la complejidad de cómo diferentes personas se han encargado de tratar con la muerte a través de las eras y las culturas la ha llevado a diseñar un festival que es de una naturaleza multicultural y multimedia.

“Cada año agregamos nuevos artistas,” nos comenta ella. “José y yo hemos visto la transformación de los artistas y del público al tratar sobre una situación muy difícil: la muerte. El evento ha creado un lugar seguro para hablar sobre los que han partido. Esto introduce y perpetua la historia, tradiciones, memorias y recuerdos familiares”.

“Como parte de este compromiso a los eventos de arte multiculturales, el Cathedral Arts Project con gusto recibe la celebración del Día de Los Muertes en la Catedral de Santa Cecilia”, dijo el Hermano William Woeger, fundador y director ejecutivo.

José García comenta: “Yo creo que Los Días de los Muertos según como se practica

en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica se está convirtiendo en un estándar cultural debido a esfuerzos y actividades comunitarias como las nuestras”. Él nos dice que llevar a cabo el festival en el campus de la Catedral es natural debido a su ubicación central, prominencia en la comunidad, patrimonio artístico e influencias españolas.

“Estamos llevando a cabo un proyecto de arte altamente organizado que ha sido creado en casa. Nosotros estamos interpretando libremente el arte y la cultura tradicional y popular en un lugar de veneración – en un lugar sagrado”. Es una buena combinación, nos dice, dado que la Catedral está repleta de íconos coloniales españoles “creados durante el tiempo en que España y la Iglesia gobernaban México”.

El Hermano Woeger agrega: “Dada la arquitectura del Renacimiento Español de la Catedral, este lugar será un hermoso complemente a esta celebración”.

Woeger dice que la Catedral tiene miembros latinos pero, aún más importante, “es la iglesia madre de la Arquidiócesis, la cual tiene una población latina muy significante”.

FESTIVAL OFFERS THREE WEEKS OF EXHIBITS AND EVENTS

Los Dias de Los Muertos traditions serve as a meaningful reminder of the connections between the living and the departed,” Jose Garcia says.

“It is this relationship that represents a transcultural fusion of indigenous customs and the Catholic faith. Each, an expression of belief in the immortal nature of the soul.”

The Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands will present a free Day of the Dead festival October 17 through November 7 curated by history-buff Garcia and his wife Omaha artist Linda Garcia.

The fifth annual Los Dias de Los Muertos exhibition and celebration is being held for the first time at St. Cecilia Cathedral and its adjacent Cultural Center. The Cathedral Arts Project is hosting the festival.

The Garcias have asked dozens of artists to variously employ visual and performing mediums to express sentiments and symbols associated with this traditional Mexican remembrance of the departed.

Ofrenda installations, artworks, lectures, workshops, storytelling, poetry readings, live theater monologues, music and dance performances will all lend their Day of the Dead interpretations.

The exhibition will be on display in the Center’s Sunderland Gallery throughout the duration of the festival.

For the 6 to 9 p.m. opening reception on Saturday, Oct. 17 patrons may follow a luminaria path between the Cathedral, where the ofrendas are in-

stalled, to the Cultural Center, where the exhibit stands.

The theme for this year’s festival is the marigold – the traditional flower utilized in Day of the Dead observances. The marigold is called Cempoalxóchitl in the indigenous Uto-Aztecan dialect and it is often incorporated into the ofrendas or stages that people create. Thus, this year’s festival is titled “El Teatro Cempoalxóchitl – the Marigold Theater” as a homage to its historic place and dramatic use.

“The focus is concentrated on the use of the marigold as setting the stage to remember and honor departed loved ones – family, friends, acquaintances, ancestors,” Linda Garcia says.

Thus, ofrenda installations at the Cathedral will incorporate the marigold, which Jose Garcia says “is a symbol of man’s brief period on Earth.”

He adds, “For thousands of years it’s been used to represent the essence of memories critical in sustaining a path of remembrance between the soul and the living.”

He says inside the Cathedral, at its Nash Chapel. a community ofrenda-altar will “present an opportunity for parishioners of St. Cecilia’s to place copies of photographs in memory of the departed. These private tributes and offerings represent both the ancient traditions and modern customs that chronicle the perpetual relationship between faith, family and history.”

A pair of lectures beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18 at the Cultural Center will discuss the origins and meanings of flowers and other objects in Meso-American art and the parallels between how Egyptians and Mexicans raise remembrance after death to high art.

In keeping with the theatrical trappings of ofrendas, a program of Verbal Ofrendas: Theater Monologues directed by Scott Working will present original works by playwrights read by actors. The monologues, accompanied by musician Michael Murphy, will take place at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 24 and at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1 in the Cathedral’s Our Lady of Nebraska Chapel.

Internationally renowned storyteller and mime Antonio Rocha will perform at 7 p.m. on Saturday , Oct. 24 in the chapel. A 10 a.m. sugar skull workshop will be held at the Center that same Saturday.

Poets will take center stage at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25 at the Center.

The Saturday, Nov. 7 finale and closing reception from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cathedral will be highlighted by a performance from the Mexican Dance Academy of Nebraska Linda Garcia says the complexities of how different peoples have dealt with death across eras and cultures has led her to design a festival that is both multicultural and multimedia in nature.

“Each year we add new artists,” she says. “Jose and I have seen the transformation of the artists and the public in dealing with a very difficult subject – death. The event has created a safe place to speak about our departed. It introduces and perpetuates family histories, traditions, memories and stories.”

“As part of its commitment to multicultural arts events, Cathedral Arts Project is pleased to welcome this celebration of Dia de Los Muertes to St. Cecilia Cathedral,” founder and executive director Brother William Woeger says.

According to Jose Garcia, “I believe Los Dias de los Muertos as practiced in the United States is becoming a cultural standard because of grassroots efforts such as ours.” He says having the festival at the Cathedral campus is only natural given its central location, prominence in the community, arts heritage and Spanish influences.

“We are bringing into play a highly organized arts project that is home grown. We are freely able to interpret traditional and popular art and culture in a venue of veneration – a sacred place.” It’s a good fit, too, he says, given that the Cathedral is replete with Spanish colonial icons “created during the time when Spain and the Church ruled Mexico.”

Brother Woeger adds, “Given the Cathedral’s Spanish Renaissance architecture, this venue should provide a beautiful compliment to this celebration.”

Woeger says the Cathedral has Hispanic membership but more importantly it is “the mother church for the Archdiocese, which has a very significant Hispanic population.”

CONFERENCIA GRATUITA PARA LOS PADRES Y ESTUDIANTES DE OPS

ay una brecha entre los padres y las escuelas.

Los padres quieren que la información, pero hay una barrera del idioma,” dice Cynthia Orozco Sánchez, una coordinadora bilingüe en la preparatoria South, agregando “ahí es donde entramos nosotros y ayudamos con eso.” En un esfuerzo por reducir los problemas de comunicación entre padres, estudiantes y las escuelas, South High School será el anfitrión de la conferencia titulada Los Caminos Hacia El Éxito Título 1 en su edificio ubicado en 4519 Sur Calle 24 el sábado, 17 de octubre de 9 a.m. a 1 p.m.

La conferencia bilingüe acogerá un orador especial, Luis Ortega de Washington DC. Ortega enseña para la Fundación Freedom Writers. “Si usted está familiarizado con la película de Escritores de la Libertad, ahora tienen talleres y él es uno de los profesores de los talleres,” dice Susana Lara, Especialista de Currículo de Idiomas del Mundo y la coordinadora de Título 1 en South High School. Según Lara, Ortega capacita a los maestros y trabaja con los estudiantes y ha

escrito un libro de memorias sobre su vida. “Él va a estar aquí para dar un discurso de motivación a los padres y estudiantes sobre la educación y sobre las oportunidades que tienen,” dice Lara.

Según Lara el 80 por ciento de la población estudiantil en South High califican para almuerzo gratis o a precio reducido. “Eso en sí mismo nos dice que nuestros estudiantes no pueden tener algunas de las oportunidades que otros estudiantes tienen,” dice Lara, añadiendo “provienen de familias en las que van a ser los primeros en graduarse de la escuela secundaria, el primero en asistir a la universidad. Pueden provenir de familias que no están familiarizados con el sistema educativo, por una razón u otra.”

Además de tener un gran número de estudiantes que están en desventaja económica South High tiene una población de refugiados de cinco por ciento y los estudiantes también se enfrentan a una gran variedad de temas que incluyen las barreras del idioma y una tasa alta de movilidad.

Estas barreras y otras contribuyen a un problema de asistencia grande en South High School. Según Sanchez los padres

tienen estudiantes que no asisten a la escuela de forma regular y tienen dificultades comunicándose con las escuelas y no puedan obtener la información necesaria para ayudar a sus hijos a volver a atender a la escuela, esta conferencia espera cambiar eso.

“Esta será una conferencia de una parada, tendremos mesas informativas para diferentes agencias de la comunidad, representantes de los colegios de la zona para que puedan venir aquí y obtener la información que necesitan,” dice Sánchez. Según Sánchez South High School también ofrecerá cuidado de niños gratuito para los niños de edad más jóvenes para que sus padres y hermanos mayores puedan tomar tiempo para escuchar al orador principal y obtener información de las universidades locales y agencias que ofrecen servicios gratuitos a la comunidad.

Además de la información general que se ofrecerá en la feria de agencias, Lara señala que uno de sus socios locales Boys Town también estará ofreciendo talleres ese día. “Hay una brecha entre los padres y las escuelas, así que estamos asoci-

ando con Boys Town”, dice Lara, añadiendo “están presentando dos talleres en nuestro evento, un taller se centrara en la depresión y el suicidio y otro taller sobre la intimidación.” Además de los talleres gratuitos, Boys Town también hablara con los padres y estudiantes sobre los otros programas que ofrecen.

“A veces nuestros estudiantes quieren aprovecharse de las oportunidades, pero no tienen los recursos económicos para asistir a una conferencia como la nuestra, dice Sánchez, añadiendo “tenemos una oportunidad única porque los padres y los estudiantes pueden asistir de forma gratuita.”

Sánchez y Lara señalan que South High School se ha comprometido a ayudar a los estudiantes seguir una educación superior y esperan que muchos estudiantes y padres asisten. “Si los padres y los estudiantes asisten a esta conferencia van a tener la experiencia y puede estar interesados en otras conferencias y oportunidades que podrían ayudarles en el camino en el futuro,” concluye Sánchez.

here is a gap between parents and the schools.

Parents want information but there is a language barrier,” says Cynthia Orozco Sanchez, the Bilingual Liaison at South High School, adding “that is where we come in and help with that.”

In an effort to reduce the communication problems between parents, students and schools, South High School will be hosting the Roads to Success Title 1 Conference at their facility located at 4519 S 24th Street on Saturday, October 17th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The free bilingual conference will host special speaker Luis Ortega from Washington D.C Ortega teaches for the Freedom Writers Foundation. “If you are familiar with the Freedom Writer’s movie, they now have workshops and he is one of the teachers for the workshops,” says Susana Lara, Curriculumn Specialist for World Languages and the Title 1 Facilitator at South High School. According to Lara Ortega trains teachers and works with students and has written a memoir about his life. “He will be here to give a motivational speech to parents and students about education and about the opportunities that they have,” says Lara.

According to Lara 80 percent of the student population at South High qualify for

free and reduced lunch. “That in itself tells us that our students may not have some of the opportunities that other students have,” says Lara, adding “they come from families where they will be the first to graduate from high school, the first to attend college. They may come from families that may not be familiar with the educational system for one reason or another.”

In addition to having a large number of students that are economically disadvantages South High School has a five percent refugee population and those students also encounter a great variety of issues that include language barriers and a high mobility rate.

These barriers and others contribute to a large attendance issue at South High School. According to Sanchez parents who have students that don’t attend school on a regular basis find it hard to communicate with schools so they cannot obtain the necessary information to help their kids get back on track, this conference hopes to change that.

“This will be a one stop conference, we will have informational tables for different agencies in the community, representatives from colleges in the area so they can come here and get the information that they need,” says Sanchez. According to Sanchez South High School will also offer free childcare for younger aged kids so their parents and older

siblings can take time to listen to the keynote speaker and get information from the local colleges and agencies that offer free services to the community.

In addition to the general information being offered at the partner agency fair, Lara points out that one of South High’s local partners will also be offering workshops that day.

“There is a gap between parents and schools so we are partnering with Boys Town,” says Lara, adding “they are presenting two workshops at our event, one workshop will focus on depression and suicide and another workshop on bullying.” In addition to the free workshops, Boys Town will also talk to parents and students about the other programs that they offer.

“Sometimes our students want to take advantage of opportunities but they don’t have the financial resources to attend a conference like ours,” says Sanchez, adding “we have a unique opportunity because both parents and students can attend free of charge.”

Sanchez and Lara point out that South High School is committed to helping students pursue a higher education and they hope many students and parents attend. “If parents and students attend this conference they will already have the experience under their belt and may be interested in other conferences and opportunities that might help them down the road,” concludes Sanchez.

l gobierno de México a través de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores celebra en todos y cada uno de sus consulados establecidos en Estados Unidos y Canadá, los primeros 15 años de la Semana Binacional de Salud.

Por tal motivo la Cónsul Titular del Consulado de México en Omaha, Guadalupe Sánchez-Salazar, inauguró las actividades el pasado viernes 9 de octubre, iniciando el programa del 2015 con un evento dirigido a los jóvenes, que se llevó a cabo en el estadio de fútbol de la escuela secundaria South High.

“Desde sus inicios la Semana Binacional de Salud ha sido posible gracias a la estrecha colaboración que existe entre el gobierno mexicano y el de los Estados Unidos, así como la participación de diferentes agencias de salud”, explicó Lizet Reyes, portavoz del Consulado Mexicano en esta ciudad, cuya oficina sirve a los estados de Nebraska y Iowa.

Reyes agregó que el propósito del evento es que “los mexicanos que residen en el extranjero y que no cuentan con un seguro, puedan acceder a los servicios básicos de salud”. Sin embargo, como Reyes señaló: “Con el paso del tiempo esto se ha extendido hacia otras comunidades, al grado de que en la actualidad también hay otros gobiernos interesados en participar y apoyar los esfuerzos del gobierno de México. En sí, la finalidad es servir a la comunidad hispana en general, pero jamás se le cierran las puertas a nadie, cualquier persona de nuestra comunidad puede beneficiarse con lo que les estamos brindando”.

mentó que desde su integración al equipo de trabajo en el 2007, ha sido testigo de los esfuerzos de los participantes en lo que llamó “la movilización más grande en el continente en cuanto al cuidado de la salud y la prevención de enfermedades se refiere, misma que ha sido posible gracias a la dedicación de agencias de salud y académicas tanto gubernamentales y no gubernamentales, enfocadas en las comunidades más vulnerables”.

De Alba aseguró que cada año son más quienes solicitan formar parte de la Semana Binacional de Salud, “lo cual tiene un efecto directo en la amplitud de los servicios que se ofrecen” y es por ello que esta vez los eventos enfocados en la salud femenina no se proporcionarán únicamente en la clínica One World Community Health Center de Omaha, sino también en el Hospital Jennie Edmundson de la ciudad vecina de Council Bluffs, Iowa.

“El evento principal de la Semana Binacional de Salud se realizará como siempre en el campus del sur de Omaha del Metropolitan Community College - explicó Lizet Reyes -, donde tendremos un programa para la familia con exámenes gratuitos, vacunas, educación y también entretenimiento porque es la primera vez que gracias al apoyo de United Health Care, nos visitará Elmo, el personaje de Plaza Sésamo, quien vendrá desde Nueva York para una presentación especial con algunos regalitos para los niños”.

La planeación de un evento de salud de dicha magnitud se lleva aproximadamente un año, y durante los últimos cuatro meses se intensificaron las labores entre voluntarios, líderes de las comunidades y prestadores de servicios como el UNMC, por lo que el Dr. De Alba expresó: “A lo largo de los años esto ha sido producto del esfuerzo de varias personas, entre las cuales siempre ha predominado la pasión

por buscar un bienestar común, así como la entrega y el deseo de servir al prójimo.

Esto ha ido tomando terreno llamando la atención de las agencias locales y del estado y se ha ido extendiendo a otras entidades. Además de los estudiantes y los doctores especialistas en diferentes áreas, tenemos la colaboración de voluntarios que sirven de intérpretes y navegadores, lo cual a nivel científico ha sido comprobado que funciona muy bien. Es decir, los navegadores o promotores de salud, son quienes orientan directamente a la población más necesitada a usar los servicios de salud a su alcance”.

Así pues, la prevención de enfermedades de transmisión sexual, el SIDA, la diabetes, el cáncer cérvicouterino y salud prenatal e infantil, son tan solo algunas de las áreas de preocupación del gobierno mexicano que se tocarán durante la semana, tal como lo enfatizó Lizet Reyes.

“Debemos recordarle a nuestra comunidad que la salud no es la ausencia de enfermedad, ya que no necesitamos sentirnos bien para proteger nuestra salud sino que debemos prevenir las enfermedades y estar preparados por si se presentan”, concluyó el Dr. De Alba.

Ohtli is a Nahuatl word (the language of ancient central Mexico) signifying “road” or “path.” The scholar Miguel León Portilla described it in this manner: “In the Codices (Pre-Columbian manuscripts) roads were symbolized by human feet. This is how the paths were marked where men and women traveled”. The Nahua poets asked, “Which is the road that the heart should follow?”

There is an answer in the codex: Melahuac Ohtli, “the Straight Road,” the one that will carry you to your destiny. When the Nahua said goodbye, they would say, as Nahua speakers still say today, “Cualli Ohtli!” “The good road!” the one that you and I should all walk.

The Mexican Government through the project Institituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME) has as one of its objective to strengthen relations with the Mexican international community of Mexicans and Mexican descent and it is for this reason that IME considers it enormously important to recognize the altruistic activity.

With this in mind, the Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME) awards annually the “Reconocimiento Ohtli” (the OHTLI Award) consisting of a medal, a silver rosette pin, and a citation of merit. This award is given to persons who have dedicated a great part of their lives and professional activity to “opening doors” abroad, so that the younger generations of Mexicans who have followed them, will find a road relatively easier to walk.

he Mexican government’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs is celebrating the first fifteen years of the Binational Health Week, and it is doing so in every one of its consulates in the United States and Canada.

Because of this, Guadalupe SanchezSalazar, Consul for the Mexican Consulate in Omaha, inaugurated the activities on October 9 with the beginning of the 2015 program with an event aimed at young people that took place at the South High football stadium.

“From its beginnings, the Binational Health week has been possible thanks to the close collaboration of the governments of Mexico and the United States, as well as because of the participation of several health agencies,” explained Lizet Reyes, spokesperson for the Mexican Consulate in the city, an institution that provides its services to the states of Nebraska and Iowa.

Reyes added that the purpose of the event is that “Mexicans who live abroad and who don’t have medical insurance can have access to basic medical services.” However, Reyes said: “The event continued to expand to other communities, and today other governments are interested in participating and supporting the efforts of the Mexican government. The goal is to serve the Latino community as a whole, but the doors remain open for everyone so that anyone from our community can benefit from the provided benefits.”

cal chapter of Red Global MX, commented that ever since he became part of the team back in 2007, he has witnessed the efforts of all participants in what he called “the biggest healthcare and disease prevention mobilization in the continent thanks to the hard work of government and non-government health and academic agencies, focusing on the more vulnerable communities.”

De Alba assured us that each year more groups want to be part of the Binational Health Week “which is a direct consequence of the wide range of services being offered,” and that is why this time the events focusing on female health will not only be provided at One World Community Health Center in Omaha but also at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in the neighbor city of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

“The main event for the Binational Health Week will take place at the south campus in Omaha at the Metropolitan Community College,” explained Lizet Reyes, “where we’ll have a program for the whole family with free tests, vaccines, information and entertainment because, thanks to the support of United Health Care, this will be the first time we’ll be visited by Elmo from Sesame Street who will come from New York for a special presentation, and he’ll be bringing some gifts for the kids.”

Planning for a healthcare event of this magnitude takes around a year, and for the last four month the work among volunteers, community leaders and service providers – such as UNMC - has intensified, said Dr. De Alba: “Over the years a lot of people have worked to make this happen, and everyone has always shown a passion for working towards a common wellbeing, as well as

to serve others. This has drawn the attention of local and state agencies. On top of students and doctors from several areas, we also have the collaboration of volunteers who work as interpreters and health promoters, which has been scientifically proven to be good for the cause. Health promoters are people who guide the population in need so that they can use the health services available to them.”

Preventing sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS, diabetes, cervical cancer, as well as prenatal and child health care are some of the main areas of concern for the Mexican government that will be talked about during the week, said Lizet Reyes.

“We must remind our community that health is not the absence of diseases because we don’t need to feel good to protect our health. We must prevent diseases and be prepared in case they do show up,” concluded Dr. De Alba.

Of all the dental schools in the United States, the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry ranks No. 1 in graduates who return to rural communities to practice, a new report indicates.

Thirty-three percent of the UNMC College of Dentistry’s graduates end up practicing in rural areas, according to an article published in the October issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association.

“As a state-supported college, one of our primary missions is to provide dental professionals for Nebraska,” said Janet Guthmiller, D.D.S., Ph.D., dean of the UNMC College of Dentistry. “We are aware of the need for dentists in rural Nebraska and the partnerships with the state are pivotal in attracting rural students and retaining our graduates in rural areas.

Through UNMC’s Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP), Dr. Guthmiller said 83 percent of dental graduates (38 of 46 students) participating in the pipeline program between 1997 and 2012 have returned to work in rural communities.

Along with the RHOP program, the UNMC College of Dentistry also works closely with the Nebraska Office of Rural Health, said Marlene Janssen, health program manager providing support to the Rural Health Advisory Commission in the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Janssen said two state-funded rural incentive programs have contributed to the College of Dentistry’s success in placing a higher percentage of graduates in rural Nebraska: · The Nebraska Loan Repayment Program funded in 1994 with dentists added in 1998; and · The Nebraska Rural Health Student Loan Program that added dental students in 2000 by the Nebraska Legislature.

“For more than 100 years the UNMC College of Dentistry has provided exceptional dental education and service to Nebraskans and beyond through premier educational programs, innovative research and clinical care,” said UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D. Dr. Gold noted that 67 percent of all the dentists practicing in the state are graduates of the UNMC College of Dentistry and 83 percent of rural dentists are graduates.

“In the past five years, our graduates have chosen to practice in 29 different counties in the state,” Dr. Guthmiller said. “Today 47 percent of the dental students currently attending the College of Dentistry are from rural communities.”

“While our students are in school, they also provide a dental safety net for underserved and low income patients providing more than $6 million in free and reduced care annually to citizens across the state,” she said.

Those accomplishments reflect only a few of the ways in which the UNMC College of Dentistry impacts the state.

Other highlights include: Fourth-year dental students spend several weeks in extramural rotations working alongside UNMC graduates and faculty in 24 different counties across Nebraska.

Since 2001 the school has treated more than 5,600 children and provided services valued at more than $2.8 million to low income and underserved children in the state. · Pediatric dental residents spend six weeks every year in Columbus, Macy, Hastings and Gering providing dental care for approximately 1,000 pediatric patients. · For years, faculty, staff and students have participated in the Nebraska Mission of Mercy, an annual charitable dental clinic that provides care to the needy in the state. Their support has helped provide dental services to more than 10,000 Nebraskans. · Students and faculty volunteer their time weekly and provide dental care at the People’s City Mission dental clinic which caters to the needy and homeless community in Lincoln. · Dental hygiene students travel to multiple nursing homes to provide care for the elderly.
