SERVICIOS GRATUITOS para los latinos en el sur de Omaha

Tenemos diferentes departamentos, la educación básica de adultos, ofrecemos servicios a los estudiantes adultos, principalmente en español. Proporcionamos instrucción de GED en español, alfabetización básica, la alfabetización informática y Inglés como segundo idioma,” dice Juliana Garza, la Coordinadora de Comunicaciones y Relaciones de Donantes, en el Centro Latino (LCM). La organización de Garza trabaja en el Sur de Omaha y es un eje central para una variedad de servicios para los clientes, principalmente para los hispanohablantes. Uno de los programas más grandes de LCM es el Programa de Asistencia para la Comunidad y Asistencia Técnica que cubre una amplia gama de servicios para los clientes.

Una gran cantidad de latinos en toda la ciudad de Omaha tienen muchas necesidades básicas y LCM tiene como objetivo ayudar a los clientes con las necesidades más básicas. “Esas necesidades pueden ser cualquier cosa de ayudar a las personas que necesitan servicios de traducción e interpretación, tal vez recibieron una solicitud de Medicaid y

no saben lo que es, así que les ayudamos con eso,” dice Garza. Según Garza LCM también ayuda a los clientes en la zona de trabajo y preparación para empleo. LCM trabaja con clientes que necesitan encontrar un trabajo para mantener a sus familias. Según Garza muchos empleadores requieren que las aplicaciones se sometan en línea, por eso su organización ayuda a los clientes con los formularios, preparar sus currículos para el proceso de la entrevista, y también los ayudan a conectarse con diferentes empresas en el área. Garza indica que una gran cantidad de empresas en el área envían las descripciones de puestos a LCM para que puedan conectarlos con las personas que buscan oportunidades de trabajo.

El trabajo con los empresarios no es el único ejemplo de cómo esta organización sin fines de lucro local crea alianzas. Garza dice que tienen una fuerte relación con una gran cantidad de agencias en el área, una de ellas es la relación con Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos Nebraska (JFON-NE). Debido al hecho de que LCM es una ubicación central para una variedad de servicios muchos de sus

clientes vienen a LCM buscando asesoría legal. Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos Nebraska tiene un abogado que da consultas en la oficina del Sur de Omaha todos los miércoles. La consulta, como todos los otros servicios que se ofrecen en LCM son gratuitos. Durante la consulta los clientes pueden hablar con el abogado de JFON acerca de su estatus legal, la ciudadanía y otros asuntos.

Aunque LCM subcontrata alguna experiencia Garza y su personal tienen una gran cantidad de experiencia y la comparten con sus clientes. El personal de LCM tienen su certificación y son preparadores de impuestos. “Ayudamos a los clientes con ese servicio de forma gratuita,” dice Garza, agregando “el año pasado fuimos la única agencia que proporciono ayuda para los impuestos en español, pero también un lugar donde los clientes podían ser asistidos con información para poder abrir una cuenta bancaria con los fondos de sus declaraciones,” según Garza. El servicio de impuestos que ofrecen todos los años en realidad afecta a las familias locales y los ayuda a poner sus situaciones financieras en orden.

Además de la asistencia individual, LCM también ofrece servicios a otras entidades locales. Uno de los miembros del personal en LCM está certificada en CPR a través del Consejo Nacional de Seguridad y LCM ofrece capacitación de CPR a guarderías locales para que puedan mantener su licencia y cumplir con todos los requisitos necesarios.

“Hacemos un montón en nuestra comunidad para ayudar a los clientes a ser autosuficientes,” dice Garza. De hecho, Garza señala que su organización organizó su cena de recaudación de fondos en julio. Durante el evento uno de los clientes de Garza compartió su historia, Blanca Zermeño llegó a LCM con una necesidad básica, esta cliente necesitaba ayuda para obtener su ciudadanía.

Zermeño se inscrito en los tutoriales de Ciudadanía en LCM y poco después fue capaz de llevar su certificado de ciudadanía a la agencia para mostrárselo a Garza y al personal “Nos estamos asegurando de que estamos cumpliendo nuestra misión y que proporcionamos ayuda para nuestras familias para que tengan las habilidades básicas que necesitan para tener éxito,” concluye Garza.

We have different departments, adult basic education, we provide services to adult learners, primarily in Spanish. We provide Spanish GED instruction, basic literacy, computer literacy and English as a Second Language,” says Juliana Garza, the Communications and Donor Relations Associate at Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM). The organization Garza works for in South Omaha is a central hub for a variety of services for primarily Spanish-speaking clients. One of the biggest programs at LCM is the Community Assistance and Technical Assistance Program that covers a wide array of services for clients.

A lot of Latinos all over the City of Omaha have many basic needs and LCM aims to help clients with even the most basic needs. “Those needs can be anything from helping people who need translation and interpretation services, maybe they received a Medicaid application and they don’t know what it is so we assist them with that,” says Garza. According to Garza LCM also helps clients in the area with job assistance and readiness. LCM works with clients that need to find a job to support their families. According to Garza many employers require that applications be filled out online so her organization helps clients submit forms, prepare their resumes for the interview process, and they also match them with different companies in the areas. Garza indicates that a lot of companies in the area send job descriptions to LCM so they can match them with individuals seeking job opportunities.

Working with employers is not the only example of how this local non-profit organization builds partnerships. Garza says that they have a strong relationship with a lot of agencies in the area, one of them is Justice for Our Neighbors Nebraska (JFONNE). Due to the fact that LCM is a central location for a variety of services a lot of her clients come to

LCM seeking legal advice. Justice for Our Neighbors Nebraska has an attorney that completes consultations at their South Omaha office every Wednesday.

The consultation, like all of the other services offered at LCM are free of charge. During the consultation clients can talk to the JFON attorney about their legal status, citizenship, and other matters.

Although LCM outsources some expertise Garza and her staff bring a lot of expertise of their own to the tables. The staff at LCM are certified tax preparers. “We help clients with that service free of charge,” says Garza, adding “Last year we were the only agency that provided not only the assistance in Spanish but also a place where clients could be assisted with or told that they could open a bank account with their returns.” According to Garza the free tax service they offer every year really impacts local families and helps them get their finances sorted out.

In addition to individual assistance, LCM also offers services to other local entities. One of the staff members at LCM is CPR certified through the National Safety Council and LCM offers CPR trainings to local childcare facilities so they can keep their license and meet all of the necessary requirements.

“We do a lot in our community to help clients to become self-sufficient,” says Garza. In fact, Garza points out that her organization hosted their fundraising dinner in July. During the event one of Garza’s clients shared her story, Blanca Zermeno came to LCM with a basic need, this client needed help obtaining her citizenship. Zermeno enrolled in the U.S Citizenship tutorials and soon after was able to bring her citizenship certificate to the agency to show Garza and the staff.

“We are making sure that we are fulfilling our mission and are there for our families so they have the basic skills they need to be successful,” concludes Garza.

UN PASTOR REGRESA A CASA Por Salvador S. Robles

l Padre Carl Zoucha conoce el Sur de Omaha y él definitivamente conoce la parroquia de la Iglesia Católica de Asunción-Guadalupe.

Después de salir de Asunción-Guadalupe en el 2010 y de servir durante cinco años en la Parroquia de la Misericordia Divina en Schuyler, Nebraska, él está emocionado de regresar a un lugar en el cual “se siente bien estar de vuelta”.

“Hay tantos grandes recuerdos de mi tiempo en el Sur de Omaha que han permanecido conmigo durante muchos años. Yo me siento energizado y honrado a través de la gracia de Dios por estar de vuelta en un lugar tan lleno de vida y de una gran cultura”, dijo Zoucha.

El Padre Carl Zoucha llegó en primer lugar en el 2002 a la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en la esquina de las calles 23 y O en donde sirvió como asistente del párroco.

Después él formó parte de la administración de la parroquia y en el 2004 se convirtió en pastor de las parroquias de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe-Asunción-Sta. Inés. Después de ser transferido a Schuyler, Nebraska y de servir ahí durante cinco años, el puesto de pastor nuevamente estuvo disponible en Asunción-Guadalupe.

“Yo había escuchado que el obispo iba a reasignar al que entonces era el pastor de Asunción-Guadalupe. El puesto estaba vacante y nadie lo había solicitado. Yo sentí una obligación y el llamado de Dios y pregunté al Arzobispo Lucas si yo podía una vez más regresar ahí a servir en Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe”, dijo Zoucha.

“El Arzobispo Lucas aceptó mi solicitud y yo estaba más que feliz de regresar a

un lugar que necesitaba a alguien bilingüe para poder servir de mejor manera a la comunidad de la iglesia”.

El Padre Carl regresó en julio y ha estado trabajando de sol a sol en un esfuerzo que aunque es cansado bien vale la pena. Actualmente la parroquia de Asunción-Guadalupe consiste de tres campus: las iglesias católicas de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Santa Inés y Asunción, la cuales se encuentran a 1.5 millas de distancias unas de las otras. “No hay un solo momento aburrido”, bromea el Padre Carl.

“Una de mis metas principales al regresar a Asunción-Guadalupe es no solamente ayudar a los feligreses, sino ayudar a proporcionar servicios y consejos a todo el que lo necesite en la comunidad del Sur de Omaha”, dijo Zoucha.

Las parroquias de Asunción-Guadalupe dan sus servicios a un gran número de personas en la comunidad del Sur de Omaha y cada campus tiene una historia única.

El campus de Asunción estuvo registrado como santuario durante muchos años y tiene una rica herencia Checa. Santa Inés era considerada como un lugar al que muchos inmigrantes irlandeses asistían a principios del Siglo XX y Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe ha permanecido como la principal iglesia para los latinos en la comunidad del Sur de Omaha durante ya muchos años.

“Cada campus juega un papel importante en nuestra parroquia, pero lo que se observa es también una mayor necesidad de servir al número de latinos no solamente en el campus de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe sino también en los otros campus”, dijo Zoucha.

Los campus de Asunción, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y Santa Inés se ubican en áreas residenciales, lo cual en ocasiones puede hacer difícil encontrar un lugar donde estacionarse, dijo el Padre Carl. “El más grande sueño que podríamos tener es que la parroquia pudiere reunir recursos externos e internos para construir un lugar que pueda sentar a entre 1,000 a 1,500 personas para que podamos adorar juntos como una comunidad. Nuestras iglesias son hermosas, pero en este momento nuestras reuniones están limitadas por el tamaño de nuestras iglesias.

Sería bueno poder tener un lugar en donde puedan estar todos nuestros feligreses”.

Durante los últimos años la Arquidiócesis de Omaha originalmente planeaba cerrar el campus de Santa Inés, pero debido a la gran cantidad de personas que la visitan y a la necesidad de contar con más misas en idioma español, dicha ubicación ha permanecido abierta. Zoucha comenta: “Yo pienso que en este momento nuestros campus son muy buenos y ser la primera parroquia en la comunidad que da misas en idioma español en verdad ha ayudado a destacar nuestro esfuerzo”. Más misas en idioma español ahora son ofrecidas por otras cinco parroquias locales en el área.

“Es algo maravilloso poder servir a la creciente comunidad latina, brindando así cuidados y consejos, en especial a los inmigrantes que vienen no solamente de México sino de toda Centroamérica”, dijo Zoucha.

Junto con las misas Asunción-Guadalupe brinda clases de formación de fe para los niños, ofrece retiros y cubre las necesidades sacramentales de sus feligreses, además de contar con otras actividades. “Si alguien

nuevo viene a nuestra parroquia queremos que se sienta bienvenido y seguro sin importar cuales sean sus antecedentes o donde vengan”, dijo Zoucha.

El Padre Carl recientemente llevó a un grupo de feligreses a ver al Padre Francisco en Filadelfia en donde se llevaba a cabo el Encuentro Mundial de las Familias. “La familia es una parte muy importante en las vidas de nuestros feligreses. La cultura latina hace hincapié en la importancia de la familia y yo espero enfocarme y concentrarme en el ministerio de familia aquí en AsunciónGuadalupe”, dijo Zoucha. El Padre Carl no solamente ve su regreso a la parroquia de Asunción-Guadalupe como una segunda oportunidad para poder hacer una diferencia no solamente en la parroquia sino también para tener un impacto duradero sobre la comunidad en el Sur de Omaha.

Zoucha dijo: “En 1992 cuando yo era seminarista fui asignado a hablar con el Padre Damien Zuerlein quien era el anterior pastor de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Fue mi primera vez en el área del Sur de Omaha y el Padre Damien habló conmigo sobre su ministerio con las personas latinas. Yo recuerdo ir caminando de vuelta a mi automóvil y voltear a ver la iglesia pensando si Dios me estaba llamando para servir a la gente de la comunidad del Sur de Omaha”, dice un sonriente Padre Carl. “No sabía que estaría de vuelta una segunda vez para servir a las personas de esta parroquia. Las personas me preguntan sobre cuánto tiempo estaré aquí, pero yo simplemente contesto que si es la voluntad de Dios, yo estaré aquí el resto de mi vida”.

r. Carl Zoucha is no stranger to south Omaha, and he is definitely no stranger to the parish he calls home, Assumption-Guada lup e Catholic Church. After leaving AssumptionGuadalupe in 2010 and serving Divine Mercy Parish in Schuyler, Neb. for five years, he is excited to be back in a place that he says, “just feels right.”

“There are so many great memories I’ve had in South Omaha that have stayed with me over the years. I feel energized and yet humble through the grace of God to be back in a place that is bursting with life and culture,” said Zoucha.

Fr. Carl Zoucha first arrived at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church at 23rd and O Streets in 2002, and served as an assistant priest. He then became part of the administration in the parish and in 2004 became pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe-Assumption-St. Agnes parishes. After being transferred to Schuyler, Neb. and serving there for five years, the position of pastor at Assumption-Guadalupe opened up once more.

“I had heard the bishop was going to reassign what was the current pastor of Assumption-Guadalupe to somewhere else. The position had been opened and no one had applied. I felt an obligation and a calling by God to ask Archbishop Lucas if I could once more go back and serve the good people of Our Lady of Guadalupe,” Zoucha says. “Archbishop Lucas granted my request and I was overjoyed to return to a place that needed someone bilingual to better serve the church and the community.”

Fr. Carl returned in July and has been working around the clock in an effort he says can sometimes be chaotic but worth the sacrifice. Currently Assumption-Guadalupe parish consists of three parish campuses; Our Lady of Guadalupe, St Agnes and Assump-

tion Catholic churches which are within a 1.5 mile-stretch of each other. “There is no boring moment,” Fr. Carl jokes.

“One of my main goals in returning to the Assumption-Guadalupe is not just to administer help to the parishioners, but to help provide services and counsel to anyone in need in the South Omaha community,” Zoucha says.

The Assumption-Guadalupe parishes serve a vast number of people in the South Omaha community and each campus has a unique history. The Assumption campus was registered as a shrine for many years and has a rich Czech heritage. St. Agnes was regarded as place where many Irish immigrants would flock to at the beginning of the 20th Century and Our Lady of Guadalupe has stood as the main go-to-church for Latinos in the South Omaha community for many years.

“Each campus plays a special part in our parish, but what you are seeing is also a growing need to serve the number of Latinos not just focused in the OLG campus but in the other campuses as well,” Zoucha says.

Assumption, OLG and St. Agnes campuses are all nestled in residential areas, which can sometimes hinder parking says Fr. Carl. “The ultimate dream I believe would be to have the parish gather outside and inside resources and build a place that sits 1,000-1,500 so that we could worship together as a community.

Our churches are beautiful, but right now our gatherings are limited by the sizes of our churches. It would be nice to have a single space for all our parishioners.”

In the past couple of years the Omaha Archdiocese had originally planned to close the St. Agnes campus, but because of the overflow and need for more masses in Spanish it has stayed open. Zoucha says, “I think for right now our parish campuses are great and being the first parish to provide masses in Spanish to the community has really helped us stand

out.” More Spanish masses are now being offered at five other local parishes in the area.

“It’s a wonderful thing being able to serve the growing Latino community. Being able to help provide care and counsel especially to new immigrants coming not just from Mexico but from all over Central America as well,” Zoucha says.

Along with masses Assumption-Guadalupe provides faith formation classes for children, retreats, sacramental needs and other activities for parishioners. “If someone new is coming to our parish we want them to feel welcome and safe no matter what their background is or where they come from.” Zoucha says.

Fr. Carl recently took a group of parishioners to see Pope Francis in Philadelphia where the World Meeting of Families was held. “The family is such an important part in our parishioners lives. Latino culture stresses the importance of family and I hope to really focus and concentrate on family ministry here at Assumption-Guadalupe,” Zoucha says. Fr. Carl not only sees his return to Assumption-Guadalupe Parish as a second chance to make a difference in the parish but to make an everlasting impact on the South Omaha community.

Zoucha says, “back in 1992 when I was a seminarian I was actually assigned to speak with Fr. Damien Zuerlein who was currently the pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was my first time really in the South Omaha area and Fr. Damien spoke to me about his ministry with the Hispanic people. I remember walking back to my car, looking back at the church and wondering if God was calling me to serve the people here in the South Omaha community.” Fr. Carl smiles, “Little did I know I would be back a second time to serve the people of this parish. People ask me how long I will be back for, I simply answer if God wills it, the rest of my life.”

Christ Child Learning Center UNA OPCIÓN PARA LOS PRIMEROS AÑOS DE FORMACIÓN DE SUS HIJOS AL ALCANCE DE SU PRESUPUESTO Por: Marina Rosado

“Somos una escuela familiar, los padres y sus hijos se sienten muy a gusto porque todos nos conocemos ya que tenemos la ventaja de contar con un amplio espacio para desarrollar nuestras actividades cómodamente, pero al mismo tiempo, somo un equipo de trabajo pequeño y muy unido, lo cual nos permite estar en comunicación constante para atender sus necesidades”, declaró Cecilia Keelan, Coordinadora de la Administración del Christ Child Learning Center.

El Christ Child Learning Center es un centro de aprendizaje infantil que como según la propia señora Keelan explicó: “Representa una excelente opción para quienes trabajan y desean que sus hijos estén en un lugar seguro, bien atendidos y sobre todo, aprendiendo todo lo necesario para cuando llegue el momento de entrar a la escuela”.

El centro es uno más de los servicios que ofrece la organización de Catholic Charities en Omaha, para familias con recursos limitados, ofreciéndoles ayuda financiera es caso de así requerirlo (aceptan el Title XX) y flexibilidad en los pagos: “Nunca rechazamos a nadie, al contrario, nos adaptamos a las situaciones de cada familia porque sabemos que hay papás a quienes les pagan cada dos semanas y otros a quienes su salario les llega cada mes, por lo que nuestro departamento de finanzas siempre está dispuesto a colaborar con ellos”.

Además de estar al frente de las tareas administrativas del Christ Child Learning Center, Keelan de igual manera dirige el programa de comida, lo que significa el hacer las compras necesarias de los alimentos y supervisar la correcta preparación de los mismos. Pero sin duda una parte que le apasiona de su trabajo, es la de poder atender a los padres de familia hispanos cuando visitan por primera vez el lugar para asistirlos durante la inscripción de sus pequeños: “Les traduzco el manual que les damos y sirvo de enlace entre ellos y los maestros, así que se crea un vínculo de confianza”.

En el equipo de trabajo del centro hay dos personas completamente bilingües, responsables de las clases en español, ya que la enseñanza se promueve en ambos idiomas, tal como lo enfatizó Keelan: “Tenemos familias hispanas haciendo uso de nuestros servicios y también tenemos algunos padres de familia que no hablan español en casa pero que desean que sus hijos lo aprendan desde chiquitos, así que están muy contentos con nuestro programa. Yo también soy una de las educadoras y me encanta enseñarles a los niños los significados de las cosas en ambos idiomas, porque los niños son muy receptivos y aprenden rápidamente”.

Recibiendo a niños de entre 3 y 6 años de edad, de lunes a viernes desde las 6:30 de la mañana, el Christ Child Learning Center ofrece múltiples ventajas a los

padres al cerrar sus puertas hasta las 6 de la tarde: “Sea el horario que escojan para traerlos (de medio tiempo o de tiempo completo), nuestra misión es preparar a los niños para cuando entren a la escuela, que salgan de aquí para dar el siguiente paso conociendo bien los números, las formas, los colores y sobre todo, con suficientes habilidades sociales para convivir con sus otros compañeritos. Nosotros tenemos estructurado el programa de tal forma que los niños chiquitos aprenden a ver a los mayorcitos como su modelo a seguir, y a su vez, los mayorcitos muestran siempre un buen comportamiento porque saben que deben poner el ejemplo”.

Con el profesionalismo de tres maestros y sus asistentes en clase, un día normal para los pequeños estudiantes transcurre entre interesantes actividades académicas tales como ciencias y language, al igual que actividades que impliquen el fomento de la salud y el desarrollo físico, pero sobre todo, su madurez..

“Es increíble ver el cambio de los niños cuando llegan al centro y cuando ya han terminado su preparación – dijo Keelan –, cuando los vemos partir están más seguros de si mismos, y sabemos que les irá muy bien en su próxima escuela”.

Al respecto, Alicia Armentrout, Directora de Educación del Christ Child Learning Center concluyó: “Ése es el momento en el que nos sentimos más orgullosos de nuestro trabajo, porque aunque es difícil verlos partir, estamos satisfechos de que emocionalmente se encuentran preparados para estar en un salón de clases.

Por eso le reiteramos la invitación a las familias para que vengan a conocernos y escuchen las experiencias de otros padres que se sienten tranquilos sabiendo que dejan a sus pequeños en buenas manos, con alguien como Cecilia (Keelan), a quien no ven como una empleada, sino como “la abuela” que es parte de su familia”.

EN BUSCA DE LA VOZ DEL SUR DE OMAHA El personal del Centro Laboral o Heartland Workers Center, están caminando en el Sur de Omaha y tocando de puerta en puerta este verano, para escuchar las preocupaciones de los miembros de la comunidad y unirlos alrededor de estos asuntos y problemas que los líderes de los vecindarios darán prioridad en preparación para las elecciones presidenciales del 2016.

El principal objetivo es entender las necesidades de los vecindarios y construir comunidades mas fuertes al conectar los líderes que quieran mejorar sus comunidades a través de una acción colectiva.

Estos líderes ayudarán a identificar los asuntos comunes que muchos de los miembros de la comunidad enfrentan día con día y juntaran a los vecinos para resolver problemas como las malas condiciones en las que se encuentras las calles, el crimen y la carente participación política a través de juntas comunitarias con funcionarios electos.

CLASES DE COMPUTACIÓN EN EL LCM Las clases de computación que se ofrecen en el Centro Latino proveen a los clientes la instrucción y práctica necesaria para aprender las operaciones básicas de la computadora y el uso de programas como Microsoft Word.

Los clientes también aprenden a navegar en Internet, abrir una cuenta de correo electrónico y buscar oportunidades de empleo. Los estudiantes indican que las clases les han servido para ayudar a sus hijos con la tarea, pagar facturas por Internet, comunicarse con amigos y familiares y aprender nuevas destrezas para el ámbito laboral.

Christ Child Learning Center AN OPTION FOR THE FIRST LEARNING YEARS OF YOUR CHILDREN AT AN AFFORDABLE COST By: Marina Rosado

“We are a family-school were parents and children feel at ease because we all know each other, and we also have a large space for our activities. At the same time we’re a small work team that is very close and that allows us to communicate constantly so that we can take care of their needs,” said Cecilia Keelan, Administrative Coordinator for the Christ Child Learning Center.

The Christ Child Learning Center is a learning center for kids that, according to Keelan, “represents an excellent option for people who work and who want their children to be at a safe place where they will be treated right and, above all, where they can learn all they’ll need when it is time for them to go to school.”

The Center is one of the many services offered by Catholic Charities in Omaha for low-income families, and they even offer financial support in case of need (they accept Title XX) as well as flexibility for payments: “We never reject someone. We actually adapt to the current situation of each family because we know there are parents who get paid every two weeks and that some get paid on a monthly basis, which is why our financial department is always ready to work with them.”

On top of being in charge of all administrative tasks at the Christ Child Learning Center, Keelan also runs the food program, and that means making all purchases needed for the ingredients for all meals. She also supervises that all meals are prepared properly. But without a doubt one of the things she loves the most is working with Latino parents who visit the Center for the first time so that she can help them during the enrollment of their little ones: “I translate the manual for them, and I act as the liaison between them and the teachers, and this builds up a bond of trust.”

The Center’s team includes to fully bilingual members who are responsible for the classes in Spanish since they focus on teaching in both languages, said Keelan: “We have Latino families but we also have parents who don’t speak Spanish and who want their children to learn the language at an early age, so they’re very happy with our program. I’m also one of the teachers, and I love to teach the little ones the meaning of words in both languages because children are very receptive, and they’re fast learners.”

The Christ Child Learning Center welcomes kids between three and six years of age from Monday to Friday, starting at 6:30 a.m. The Center is a great option for parents since it closes its doors at 6 p.m.: “No matter the schedule selected by parents (half a day or

full day), our mission is to prepare the children so that they’re ready when they start to go to school, so that here they learn about numbers, shapes, colors and, above all, so that they learn the social skills that will allow them to interact with their classmates. We have set the program in such a way that smaller children learn lo look up to older kids as their role models and, at the same time, so that older children are always in their best behavior because they are the ones setting an example for the little ones.”

Thanks to the professionalism of three teachers and their assistants, a normal day for the little students includes interesting academic activities such as science and language classes, as well as activities that promote a healthy lifestyle and physical development, as well as them growing up as individuals.

“It is amazing to see the change in children from when they arrived at the Center to when they’ve finished their preparation,” said Keelan, “when we see them go they feel better about themselves, and we know that they’ll do great at their next school.”

Alicia Armentrout, Education Director for the Christ Child Learning Center, said: “It is at that moment that we feel so proud of the work we do, because even though it’s hard to see them go, we are pleased that they are now emotionally ready to be in a classroom. This is why we once again invite all families so that they come to meet us so that they can listen to the experiences of other parents so that they can feel at ease knowing that they’ll leave their little ones in good hands with someone like Cecilia (Keelan), who they don’t see as an employee but as ‘grandma’ who is part of their family.”

IN SEARCH FOR THE VOICE OF SOUTH OMAHA The staff of the Heartland Workers Center are walking door to door, or canvassing, in South Omaha this summer to listen to the concerns of the members of our communities and bring them together around issues and problems that a collective neighborhood leadership will prioritize in preparation of the 2016 presidential election.

The prime objective is to understand neighborhood needs and build stronger communities by connecting leaders who believe in bettering their communities through collective action.

These leaders will help to identify common issues that many members of our community face on a daily basis and will bring their neighbors together to solve problems like poor street conditions, crime and low political participation through communal discussion with elected officials.

This will enable our community members to voice their concerns, and speak up for their communities and demand accountability from those who hold political and economic power in our city.

This is an example of what happens when concerned community members participate in transforming their own communities for the better.

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY CLASSES AT LCM The computer technology classes offered at the Latino Center of the Midlands provide clients with instruction and hands-on opportunities to learn basic computer operations and the use of software such as Microsoft Word. Clients also learn how to navigate the Internet, set up an email account and search for employment opportunities. Students indicate that the classes assist them with helping their children with homework, paying bills online, communicating with friends and family, and learning new skills for the workforce.
