i consejero de una manera muy grosera me despidió y me dijo que la gente como yo no podía ir a la universidad,” dice Luis Ortega, Director de Narradores Para el Cambio, agregando “eso fue muy difícil para mí y yo lo describo como mi primera angustia real. Me sentí como que una gran cantidad de trabajo se había ido a la basura.” Ortega, un inmigrante de la ciudad de México describe la primera vez que él le dijo a su consejero de su escuela que el era indocumentado como un momento muy difícil en su vida, sin embargo, en lugar de dejar que ese momento limitara u futuro el decidió tomar la experiencia y cambiar su historia y futuro.

Ortega, quien fue creado en un hogar con una madre soltera, comenzó a trabajar en la construcción a la edad de 14 para ayudar a su madre a mantener a sus dos hermanas menores. Ortega señala que su familia se trasladó a Seattle, Washington para que él y sus hermanas pudieran obtener una educación. “A lo largo de la escuela secundaria nunca fui a ninguno de los bailes de la escuela porque no podía, nunca participe en algún deporte, porque no pude, todos los días después de la escuela tenía que irme a trabajar,” dice Ortega, agregando “en muchas maneras la situación estaba bien, porque el enfoque eran mis estudios.

Ortega soñaba con asistir a la universidad después de la secundaria, sin embargo, su consejero de la escuela le dijo que no podía. Ortega no dejo que esto lo detuviera y él y su familia decidieron asistir a una conferencia para los estudiantes y padres en otra escuela secundaria en Seattle para obtener los recursos necesarios y la información que necesitaba acerca de la universidad. “Usted puede dejar un momento como ese derribar y definir quién es o usted puede decirse a si mismo que usted es el único que puede escribir su propia historia,” dice Ortega.

En la conferencia local en Seattle, Ortega conoció a una educadora de la Universidad de Washington, quien cambió su vida. “Estábamos en un taller y la gente estaba haciendo preguntas, yo levanté la mano y le dije lo que me había pasado y ella me miró directamente a los ojos y me dijo ‘usted va a ir a la universidad,” dice Ortega.

Según Ortega ese momento cambió su vida.

Ortega finalmente asistió a la universidad y dice que la razón por la cual asistió a la universidad es porque “decidí convertir lo que podría haber sido una experiencia muy negativa en una motivación.

Creo que ese tipo de mentalidad es lo que le ayuda a uno superar momentos así.” Ortega ahora trabaja con los estudiantes indocumentados a través de Narradores para el Cambio, una organización que comenzó hace cinco años.

Ortega describe su tiempo en la universidad como un gran momento en su vida, sin embargo, señala que algo faltaba. “No podía dejar de preguntarme si esto le sucedía a otros estudiantes indocumentados o no,” dice Ortega, agregando “estudiantes que se les dice que no son suficientes, que no pueden ir a la universidad o que todo lo que quieren lograr no es posible.” De acuerdo con Oretga pronto se dio cuenta de que esto está sucediendo a los estudiantes en todo el país y esto le ha inspirado ofrecer talleres para jóvenes, educadores y líderes de la comunidad a través de los Estados Unidos.

La organización de Ortega trabaja para lograr dos objetivos, “el primero es para darles la posibilidad de creer que tienen una historia que contar.

Una de nuestras creencias centrales en nuestra organizacion es que la gente pueda crear el cambio, y sus historias inspiran a la gente,” dice Ortega.

El segundo componente es no solamente que las personas crean en su propia historia, pero que la gente comparta esas historias. “La razón por la que importa a mí, personalmente, es porque en mi propia experiencia de crecer como un inmigrante de México en este país muchas veces me dijeron que no me importaba,” dice Ortega.

Ortega señala que los estudiantes se levantarán a las expectativas que les ponen, si los padres y los educadores esperan solamente lo mejor de ellos los estudiantes se elevarán a esas expectativas. Ortega anima a los educadores y padres para apoyar a los estudiantes en la comunidad de Omaha y ayudarles a seguir una educación superior. “Todo es posible, solamente tienes que estar dispuesto a dar el primer paso,” concluye Ortega.

Speaker at South High Conference Inspires Students

BY LIZ C ODINA y counselor in a very rude way dismissed me and told me that people like me couldn’t go to college,” says Luis Ortega, Director of Storytellers for Change, adding “that was very difficult for me and I describe it as my first real heartbreak. I felt like a lot of work had just pretty much gone to waste.”

Ortega, an immigrant from Mexico City describes the first time he told his school counselor he was undocumented as a very difficult moment in his life, however, instead of letting it limit his future he decided to take the experience and change his story and future.

Ortega, who was raised in a single family household, started working construction at the age of 14 to help his mother support his two younger sisters. Ortega points out that his family moved to Seattle, Washington so he and his siblings could pursue an education. “Throughout high school I never went to any of the school dances because I couldn’t, I never participated in any sports because I couldn’t, every single day after school I had to go to work,” says Ortega, adding “in many ways that was ok, because it was all about my education. Ortega dreamed of attending college after high school, however, his school counselor told him he couldn’t. Ortega did not let this

stop him and he and his family decided to attend a conference for students and parents at another high school in Seattle to get the necessary resources and information he needed about attending college. “You can let a moment like that bring you down and define who you are or you can tell yourself that you are the only one that can write your own story,” says Ortega.

At the local conference in Seattle, Ortega met an educator from the University of Washington that changed his life. “We were at a workshop and people were asking questions, I raised my hand and told her what had happened to me and she looked me straight in the eyes and she said ‘you are going to go to college,’” says Ortega. According to Ortega that moment changed his life.

Ortega eventually attended college and he says that the reason why is because “I decided to turn what could have been a really negative experience into a motivation. I think that type of mindset is what helps you overcome moments like that.”

Ortega now works with undocumented students through Storytellers for Change, an organization he started five years ago.

Ortega describes his time in college as a great time in his life, however, he points out that something was missing. “I couldn’t help but ask if this was happening to other students

documented or not,” says Ortega, adding “students that are being told that they are not enough, that they cannot go to college or that whatever they want to accomplish is not possible.”

According to Oretga he soon realized that it is happening to students all around the nation and this has inspired him to provide workshops to young people, educators and community leaders across the United States.

Ortega’s organization works to achieve two objectives, “the first one is to empower them to believe that they have a story to tell. One of our central beliefs at our organizations is that people create change but stories inspire people,” says Ortega. The second component is not only for people to believe in their own story but for people to share that story. “The reason why that matters to me personally is because in my own background growing up as an immigrant from Mexico in this country too often I feel like I was told that I did not matter,” says Ortega.

Ortega points out that students will rise to the expectations we set from them, if parents and educators expect nothing but the best of them and challenge them to do better students will rise to those expectations. Ortega encourages educators and parents to support students in the Omaha Community and help them pursue a high education. “Everything is possible, you just have to be willing to take the first step,” concludes Ortega.

l Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, esbozó un panorama desolador de la situación de derechos humanos en que viven millones de personas en México, pese al progreso logrado mediante reformas jurídicas y constitucionales. Durante su reciente visita a ese país, Zeid puso de relieve la brecha que existe entre la avanzada normativa y la situación real que viven los mexicanos en materia de derechos humanos, así como la diferencia entre el excelente compromiso internacional del país en este ámbito y sus deficiencias en el plano interno.

Una manifestación en la ciudad de México en favor de los estudiantes que desaparecieron en Iguala, en el Estado de Guerrero © SASHENKA GUTIERREZ/EPAEl Alto Comisionado se reunió con el Presidente, Enrique Peña Nieto, y con altos funcionarios del Estado, ONG, víctimas de violaciones de los derechos humanos y otros miembros de la sociedad civil para examinar los elevados niveles de inseguridad, las desapariciones y muertes, el acoso a los defensores de los derechos humanos y los periodistas, la violencia contra las mujeres, y los abusos contra los migrantes y refugiados que atraviesan en país con rumbo a Estados Unidos.

Zeid encomió el progreso logrado por el gobierno en lo tocante a las leyes sobre la desaparición forzada y la tortura, e hizo hincapié en que esas normas deben aprobarse y ponerse en práctica con la participación activa de las víctimas y la sociedad civil.

En un país donde se calcula que el 98 por ciento de los delitos quedan impunes y la gran mayoría de los casos nunca son objeto de una investigación adecuada, Zeid declaró que existe un consenso nacional, regional e internacional acerca de la gravedad de la situación de derechos humanos en México.

“Para un país que no se encuentra en situación de conflicto, los cálculos son sencillamente sobrecogedores: 151.233 personas asesinadas entre diciembre de 2006 y agosto de 2015, entre los cuales se cuentan miles de inmigrantes en tránsito”, afirmó Zeid.

“Miles de mujeres y niñas ha sido víctimas de agresiones sexuales o de feminicidio. Y no se condena a casi nadie por estos delitos”.

Las víctimas de desapariciones forzadas son alrededor de 26.000 y cada día se producen nuevos casos. “El volumen de sufrimiento es imposible de comprender… Es trágico para las personas afectadas y trágico también para el país en su conjunto”, dijo Zeid.

El Alto Comisionado condenó categóricamente los actos de violencia perpetrados por “poderosas y despiadadas bandas de delincuentes” que constituyen una amenaza para la vida de los mexicanos. Pero señaló también que muchas de las desapariciones, torturas y ejecuciones extrajudiciales han sido presuntamente cometidas por autoridades federales, estatales y municipales, incluso por la policía y un sector de las fuerzas armadas.

“La combinación de miedo, codicia e impunidad crónica es muy fuerte y millones de personas padecen ahora a causa de este cóctel venenoso que, una vez elaborado, es difícil de eliminar”, afirmó Zeid.

Zeid insistió en que los funcionarios mexicanos deben solucionar el caso de la desaparición forzada que ocupó titulares de prensa en el mundo entero, cuando 43 estudiantes de la Escuela Normal Rural de Ayotzinapa se esfumaron en Iguala, en el Estado de Guerrero.

Según los informes, la policía local participó en ataques y emboscadas a los estudiantes desarmados. Hay pruebas de que agentes de la policía municipal, estatal y federal, junto con otros oficiales del Estado y el ejército, estuvieron involucrados en el crimen, no brindaron protección a las víctimas o contribuyeron a ocultar los hechos, manifestó Zeid.

El Alto Comisionado destacó estos hechos porque podrían tener una repercusión positiva sobre casos similares en todo el país, si el asunto se resuelve como consecuencia de

una investigación exhaustiva, que permita identificar, procesar y condenar a los culpables, y proporcionar reparación a las víctimas. “El caso de Iguala es un microcosmos de los problemas crónicos que sustentan la incesante ola de violaciones de derechos humanos que tiene lugar a lo largo y ancho de México”, declaró Zeid. “En particular, este caso pone de relieve la prevalencia de la impunidad y el desdén por las víctimas que afecta a todo el país”.

Zeid se sintió profundamente conmovido por el valor, la decisión y el compromiso de numerosas personas que conoció en México, que trabajan para mejorar el país, y por el elevado número de víctimas de la violencia y de familias que tienen un pariente desaparecido.

“Quisiera que todo el mundo pudiera reunirse con ellos y escucharlos”, dijo Zeid.

“Padecer la desaparición de un ser querido, no saber si está vivo o muerto; y si está muerto, cuánto sufrió y durante cuánto tiempo…

Resulta doblemente cruel cuando las autoridades no se molestan –o no atreven- a investigar lo que le ocurrió a tu hijo o hija, hermana, socio o mejor amigo”.

Aunque todos estos asuntos son ampliamente conocidos por la mayoría de los mexicanos, Zeid expresó su preocupación por la intolerancia que algunos políticos del país manifiestan hacia el escrutinio público en relación con los últimos informes sobre la

situación de derechos humanos de México.

“En vez de ejecutar al mensajero, prestemos atención al mensaje. Estamos de vuestra parte. Todos queremos ayudar a México”, afirmó Zeid.

El Alto Comisionado presentó al gobierno mexicano un conjunto de recomendaciones para combatir esos problemas, entre otras la de fortalecer la Fiscalía General en todo el país, a fin de garantizar que las violaciones de derechos humanos son objeto de la investigación apropiada, y la de reforzar la capacidad de la policía para desempeñar sus funciones en materia de seguridad pública, de conformidad con sus obligaciones de derechos humanos. Además, Zeid se manifestó a favor de establecer un calendario para retirar a los militares de las tareas relativas a la seguridad pública y de aplicar las recomendaciones y los dispositivos de seguimiento para los casos más graves, formulados por el Grupo interdisciplinario de expertos independientes.

“En la comunidad internacional abunda la buena voluntad hacia México, pero, a fin de cuentas, son los mexicanos –y en particular, la clase política mexicana- quienes tienen que solucionar estos enormes problemas”, dijo el Alto Comisionado.

great majority of them never even properly investigated. It is therefore not surprising the citizens of Mexico feel insecure – notwithstanding the drop in the homicide and kidnapping rates, which we all welcome.

I do not want to simply repeat the statement made last Friday by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) at the end of their visit to Mexico. I do however fully endorse the IACHR’s findings, which very much coincide with the views of my office and of the various other UN international human rights experts and bodies which have recently visited or reported on the situation in Mexico. …

For a country that is not engaged in a conflict, the estimated figures are simply staggering: 151,233 people killed between December

t is just over four years since my predecessor, Navi Pillay, was invited to Mexico. Since then, there have been highly significant legislative developments, including the constitutional reforms of 2011 and this year’s amendments which paved the way for new general laws addressing two of Mexico’s most pressing human rights issues, namely enforced disappearances and torture. The approval and implementation of both these laws will require the active participation of victims and civil society organizations and must be fully aligned with international human rights standards.

On the international level, Mexico has for many years been a staunch supporter of human rights … During my visit, I met with key officials of the State, including President Peña Nieto, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Interior, the President of the Supreme Court, the Attorney-General, a group of Senators and the President of the National Conference of Governors. I also had discussions with the Secretaries of National Defense and of the Navy and with the National Security Commissioner (the chief of the federal police).

During these meetings I was informed of a number of significant constitutional and legal advances over the past four years. … In addition, important policy measures have been taken such as the adoption of the National Human Rights Programme (2014-2018) and protocols to investigate torture and disappearances. Gender warning systems have recently begun operating, as have programmes aimed at addressing the challenges posed by migration and across-the–board training programmes for police, judiciary and other civil servants. I welcomed the recent rulings of the Supreme Court regarding same-sex marriage, torture and the protection of personal liberty and due process. …

However, despite this progress towards building a solid human rights framework – which is recognized and greatly valued by me and many others – my visit has been very sobering with regard to the daily realities for many millions of people here in Mexico itself.

And ultimately it is the people who judge. It is neither myself, my Office, the UN or State officials who can declare enough is being done or has been done. It is only the people who can do this, especially the most disadvantaged, the victims or families of the victims of crime who have the credibility to pass judgment.

Many of the issues raised by my predecessor four years ago remain of concern, and many of the people I have spoken to have painted a very bleak – and consistent – picture of a society that is wracked by high levels of insecurity, disappearances and killings, continuing harassment of human rights defenders and journalists, violence against women, and terrible abuses of migrants and refugees transiting the country on their way to the United States.

Official statistics show that 98 percent of all crimes in Mexico remain unsolved, with the

2006 and August 2015, including thousands of transiting migrants. At least 26,000 people missing, many believed to be as a result of enforced disappearances, since 2007. Thousands of women and girls are sexually assaulted, or become victims of the crime of femicide.

And hardly anyone is convicted for the above crimes.

Part of the violence can be laid at the door of the country’s powerful and ruthless organized crime groups, which have been making life a misery for people living in several of Mexico’s 32 States. I condemn their actions unreservedly. But many enforced disappearances, acts of torture and extra-judicial killings are alleged to have been carried out by federal, state and municipal authorities, including the police and some segments of the army, either acting in their own interests or in collusion with organized criminal groups.

The devastatingly corrosive impact of organized crime and the huge amounts of money these gangs command is co-opting or corrupting key institutions, and in some areas reducing Mexico’s impressive array of laws to mere words on paper. The combination of fear, greed and chronic impunity is potent, and millions of people are suffering from this poisonous cocktail which once brewed is hard to eliminate. …

Over the past few days, I was heartened to hear senior Government officials describe a new determination to confront these challenges, and I informed them that my Office is ready to assist in any way we can.

In this vein, I will follow-up with a list of recommendations for the Mexican government. In the meantime, I would like to emphasize the need for the following key measures: ● Urgently strengthen the AttorneyGeneral´s Offices across the country to ensure that human rights violations are properly investigated, leading to prompt results. ● Urgently strengthen the capacity of the police to carry out their public security functions in line with human rights obligations, including developing a legal framework on the use of force. ● Adopt a time frame for the withdrawal of the military from public security functions. ● Implement the IGIE’s recommendations and consider similar follow-up mechanisms for other serious cases.

The international community is full of good will towards Mexico, but ultimately it is only Mexicans – and especially Mexico’s political class -- who can resolve these massive problems. The country has amazing human, as well as abundant material, resources. The problems have grown so large, it is a daunting task for any government to sort them out, but the government that succeeds – the one that radically reforms the police, makes justice work, slashes the crime rate and jails the criminals, puts the army back in the barracks, protects the marginalized, works hardest to reduce violence against women -- is the one the nation needs and wants.

The Government that taps fully into its citizens’ desire and ability to create a state that works, is the Government that will be remembered and praised by future generations. Such a Government would be able attract a massive influx of foreign direct investment, which would in turn stimulate greater and much wider prosperity for its population.

I pray that this Government can bind itself to a new sense of urgency in solving the enormous human rights challenges it faces, so that every citizen will judge it to be that Government.

A CASI UN AÑO DEL ALIVIO MIGRATORIO DE OMAHA, ORGANIZACIONES CIVILES NO CONSIGUEN EL FALLO DE LOS MAGISTRADOS EN LOISIANA

RECONOCIMIENTO DE APPLESEED A EXCEPCIONALES DEFENSORES DE NEBRASKA

A

l momento de escribir esta nota, los participantes del Movimiento para una Reforma Migratoria Justa (FIRM, por sus siglas en inglés), daban una conferencia de prensa afuera de la Corte de Apelaciones del 5to. Circuito en la ciudad de Nueva Orleans, Lousiana, para dar a conocer cuáles serán las siguientes estrategias a seguir en su lucha por la reforma migratoria.

FIRM acaparó la atención durante las últimas semanas, luego de que un solidario grupo de 13 mujeres y hombres, entre los que se encontraban familiares de inmigrantes, trabajadores y estudiantes, así como líderes comunitarios de diversos sectores, mantuvieron un ayuno de 9 días (del miércoles 14 al jueves 22 de octubre), para presionar al panel conformado por tres jueces a emitir un fallo que pudiera finalmente decidir el futuro de la Acción Ejecutiva, que el presidente Barack Obama anunciara hace casi un año.

El evento llevado a cabo en el marco del movimento Ayuno para Mantener Familias Unidas buscaba acabar con el retraso por parte de los conservadores magistrados, orillándolos a tomar una decisión sobre la Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) y la Acción Diferida para Padres de Ciudadanos y Residentes Permanentes de Estados Unidos (DAPA) antes del viernes 23 de este mes. Algo que no sucedió pese al numeroso apoyo que recibieron los participantes que tuvieron que viajar desde estados como California, Kansas, Maryland, Nuevo México, Nueva York y Oregón, y quienes tuvieron simpatizantes que se les unieron desde ciudades como Chicago (Illinois) y Charlotte (Carolina del Norte).

Estamos a escasos dos meses de que finalice este 2015 y ya hemos observado en los medios de comunicación, el amplio discurso de los aspirantes republicanos y demócratas a la candidatura oficial por la presidencia con respecto al tema de la inmigración.

Sin embargo, ante el panorama que se vivió en Nueva Orleans, cabría preguntarles a los opositores al alivio migratorio del aún presidente Obama, si no son suficientes las historias que se han dejado escuchar en toda la nación para emitir un dictamen. Relatos esperanzadores como el de Jessica Pacheco, la segunda de cuatro hijos de un matrimonio mexicano, quien antes de beneficiarse con el DACA, vivió momentos de incertidumbre al lado de sus padres, hasta que consiguió no sólo su permiso de trabajo sino finalmente, una licencia para conducir.

Ella tiene 20 años y cursa su tercer año en la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha: “Mi padre ya está más tranquilo no sólo por mi sino porque él no fue deportado y ya tiene su número de seguro social y su caso también va muy avanzado. Pero aún no estoy segura de lo que pueda pasar con mi mamá. Ella también merece una oportunidad como el DAPA, pero no sabemos si vaya a ser posible. Mis

dos padres han trabajado muchísimo por nosotros, nada los ha detenido y pienso que el obtener sus papeles les permitiría dejar de vivir con miedo”.

Y es que el temor ha estado presente en muchos hogares de inmigrantes hispanos desde siempre, aún entre los más jóvenes como Alexis Martínez quien fue traído a este país por sus padres desde el estado de Oaxaca (México), cuando apenas contaba con tres meses: “Tengo dos hermanas menores que nacieron aquí, y mis padres siempre han estado preocupados por lo que me pudiera suceder, principalmente porque no sabían si iba a poder seguir con mis estudios y encontrar un empleo”.

A sus 15 años, Martínez por fin puede mirar optimísticamente hacia adelante: “Gracias al DACA ya me llegó mi permiso de trabajo y pienso hacer el exámen para obtener mi permiso para conducir, ahora que esto ya es posible en Nebraska”.

Martínez cursa el segundo año de secundaria y aunque destaca jugando fútbol, su sueño es llegar a ser arquitecto: “Voy a ser el primero de mi familia que pueda tener algo como una licencia de manejo y estoy muy contento porque pienso obtener un empleo y empezar a ayudar a mis padres”.

Tanto Pacheco como Martínez obtuvieron sus documentos con el apoyo del abogado Thomas Niklitscheck, a quien conocieron gracias a su participación en la comunidad, sobre todo en la iglesia, y a través de familiares.

“El otorgarles la licencia de manejo a los jóvenes este 2015 fue un paso importántisimo – comentó Niklitscheck -, ya que en mi mi opinión, los políticos de Nebraska se dieron cuenta de que le estaban haciendo mucho daño a estos chicos y que la imagen del estado se veía bastante mal en todo el país, por ser el único lugar donde no les estaba permitido sacar el documento”.

Niklitscheck aún confía en que en un futuro próximo se lleve a cabo la tan ansiada reforma migratoria: “Y considero que Hilary Clinton tiene muchas posibilidades de llegar a ser presidente y capacidad para promoverla”.

Su oficina legal atiende muchos casos como los de Pacheco y Martínez: “Por lo que me siento muy orgulloso de los servicios que brindamos porque en el caso de los jóvenes siempre me pongo primero en sus zapatos y estoy convencido de que ellos no tienen por qué abandonar un país, cuando este país representa el único hogar que conocen y tienen el mismo derecho que yo, que nací aquí, de crecer y desarrollarse”.

INDIOS MÉXICO-AMERICANOS: LA CUARTA TRIBU MAS GRANDE EN USA

Indios México-Americanos ahora forman la cuarta tribu mas grande delos Estados Unidos, después de los Cherkés, Navajos y Chocotaw, de a cuerdo con el Censo de Los Estados Unidos.

Un resumen del censo titulado “La población de Indios Americanos y Nativos: 2010”, establece que hay un total de 175,494 Indios México-Americanos en toda la nación, 14,435 en Texas, y 578 en el Condado de El Paso.

La categoría “Mexicano” es una subcategoría de “Hispano” bajo las reglas del Censo de los Estados Unidos.

El Doctor Howard Campbell, un profesor de antropología de UTEP, dijo que existen varios factores que pueden contribuir al crecimiento de las personas a auto-identificarse como Indios México-Americanos.

Un factor puede ser causa del mismo censo. “Esta haciendo posible que muchos se identifiquen con muchas etiquetas, tales como negro e hispano, y así en adelante”, dijo el Doctor Campbell. Una razón adicional por el crecimiento de personas que se identifican como Indios México-Americanos puede ser por el crecimiento de la conciencia social.

OMAHA ESTA DE LUTO POR LA MUERTE DE CUATRO ESTUDIANTES DE CREIGHTON

Akuel Majouk, Mariana Ramírez, Jennifer Guzmán y Yoselin Deleón, estudiantes de Creighton murieron la tarde del sábado en un estrecho del sur de la carretera estatal 77 de Beatrice, cuando Majouk trató de esquivar un venado.

La comunidad de Creighton organizó una misa el domingo para celebrar la vida de las estudiantes.

Amigos y familia se han reunido y llorado la muerte de estas jóvenes en sus hogares, en escena del accidente, donde han construido un altar provisional, y en el campus de la universidad de Creighton.

En Nebraska la mayoría de los accidentes de carros con venados ocurre en estas fechas al anochecer por ser la temporada de apareamiento y por la escases de refugios por la cosecha.

De acuerdo con Deb Collins, Policía Estatal de Nebraska, Majouk estaba manejando y viró para esquivar un venado. Al hacer esto, el Honda en el que viajaban invadió el carril de sentido contrario. Su CRV fue impactado de lado por el vehículo de Robert Saunders, de 60 años, de Waverly.

Saunders fue transportado en helicóptero al Bryan Medical Center en Lincoln con heridas serias pero no mortales.

ALMOST A YEAR AFTER IMMIGRATION RELIEF IN OMAHA, CIVIL ORGANIZATIONS CANNOT SECURE A RULING FROM JUDGES IN LOUISIANA

t the time of writing this article, members of the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), were giving a press conference outside of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, Louisiana, to detail their strategy for fighting for the immigration reform. FIRM has caught the attention of the community over the last few weeks after a group of thirteen women and men that included relatives of immigrants, workers and students, as well as community leaders, held a period of fasting for nine days (in October from Wednesday 14 to Thursday 22), to pressure the panel of three Judges to rule on what will happen with President Barack Obama’s executive action from almost a year ago.

This took place during “The Fast to Keep Families Together” and it was an action to try and end the delay of the conservative Judges to rule on the Deferred Actions For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) before last Friday.

Unfortunately, this didn’t happen despite all the support from people who had to travel from California, Kansas, Maryland, New Mexico, New York, and Oregon, and who were also joined by people from Chicago (Illinois) and Charlotte (North Carolina).

We’re two months away from the end of the year 2015, and we’ve been noticing on media outlets how the Democrats and the Republicans that want to run for President have been talking a lot about immigration.

However, after what is going on in New Orleans, we’d need to ask those who oppose President Obama’s immigration relief if all the stories heard nationwide aren’t enough to rule on the matter. Stories of hope like the one from Jessica Pacheco, the second of four kids from a Mexican married couple who, before benefiting from DACA, had to live some harsh moments of uncertainty with her parents until she managed to get not only a work permit but also a driver’s license.

She’s currently 20 years old and studying at the University of Nebraska Omaha: “Now my father doesn’t worry as much, not only for me but also because he wasn’t deported.

He now has a social security number, and his case is going well. But I’m not sure about what will happen with my mother. She deserves a chance to take advantage of something like DAPA, but we don’t know if that will be possible.

My two parents have worked very hard for us, and nothing has stopped them, so

I think that if they could get their papers that would allow them to stop living in fear.”

Because fear has always been looming heavy over the homes of Latino immigrants, as is the case of the home of young people like Alexis Martinez who was brought here by his parents from Oaxaca (Mexico) when he was only three months of age: “I have two younger sisters who were born here, and my parents have always lived in fear of what could happen to me, especially because they didn’t know if I would be able to continue studying and get a job.”

Martinez, now fifteen years old, can finally look to the future with optimism: “Thanks to DACA I finally got my work permit, and I’m thinking about applying for my driver’s permit now that this option is available in Nebraska.”

Martinez is currently a junior high student who excels as a football player, and he dreams of becoming an architect: “I’ll be the first in my family to get a driver’s license, and I’m happy because I’m looking forward to getting a job to start helping my parents.”

Both Pacheco and Martinez got their documents thanks to the help of Lawyer Thomas Niklitscheck, who they met thanks to his involvement with the community, especially at church, as well as thanks to the recommendation of family members.

“Giving young people a driver’s license in 2015 was a very important step,” said Niklitscheck, “because in my opinion politicians in Nebraska realized that they were harming these kids and that the State’s image was suffering nationwide since it was the only place in the country where they couldn’t get a driver’s license.”

Niklitscheck still thrusts that the greatly anticipated immigration reform will happen soon: “I think Hilary Clinton has a good chance of becoming President and promote an immigration reform.”’

His legal office takes on many cases like the ones of Pacheco and Martinez: “I feel very proud of the services we provide. In the case of the young people I always put myself in their shoes and I do believe that they don’t have to leave this country when this is the only home they know.

They have the same rights as me, who was born here: to grow and develop.”

Three awards presented to those outstanding advocates who made invaluable contributions to justice and opportunity for all Nebraskans will be honored at the 2015 Good Apple Awards in Omaha.

The Good Apple Awards is Nebraska Appleseed’s annual awards dinner recognizing the accomplishments of Nebraskans who have been leaders in the fight for positive change in our state and their communities. The 2015 Good Apple Awards honorees are: Frank LaMere - Jim Wolf Equal Justice Award. Frank LaMere receives this award for his lifelong work fighting for human rights and dignity for Nebraskans of all ethnicities and origins.

This award, named for Appleseed’s founding executive director, recognizes a young, emerging leader who has a vision for the best of what Nebraska can be. Sen. Howard has been a passionate leader to increase access to health care and opportunity for Nebraskans with low incomes.

MEXICAN-AMERICAN INDIANS: FOURTH LARGEST TRIBAL GROUP IN USA Mexican-American Indians now make up the fourth largest tribal group in the United States, following the Cherokee, Navajo, and Choctaw, according to the US Census.

A US Census brief, titled “The American Indian and Native Population: 2010,” states that there are 175,494 MexicanAmerican Indians nationwide, 14,435 in Texas, and 578 in El Paso County. The “Mexican” category is a subset of the “Hispanic” category under US Census rules.

Dr. Howard Campbell, a professor of anthropology at UTEP, said that there are various factors that may attribute to the growth of people self-identifying as Mexican-American Indians. One factor may be the US Census itself. “It’s making it possible for many to identify with more labels, such as black and Hispanic, and so forth,” said Dr. Campbell. However, he said that calling MexicanAmerican Indians a “tribe” could be misleading. “Mexican Indian isn’t considered Native American in the US. It becomes a symbolical matter rather than a political one,” said Dr. Campbell. An additional reason for the growth of people identifying as MexicanAmerican Indian may stem from the growth of awareness.

OMAHA MOURNS FOUR CREIGHTON COLLAGE STUDENTS KILLED IN A CAR ACCIDENT Akuel Majouk, Mariana Ramirez, Jennifer Guzman, and Yoselin Deleon, students from Creighton University died Saturday evening on a stretch of U.S. Highway 77 south of Beatrice, after Majouk swerved to avoid a deer.

Creighton community had a Service last Sunday evening to celebrate the women’s lives. Friends and family members had gathered and grieved at the homes of the young women, at the scene of the crash where a makeshift memorial had sprung up, and on Creighton campus.

In Nebraska, most collisions between deer and cars occur at this time of year and after dusk, because it is mating season and there is less shelter due to harvest. According to Deb Collins of the Nebraska State Patrol, Majouk was driving and swerved to miss a deer. In doing so, she apparently turned the side of the Honda into the path of oncoming traffic. Her CRV was “T-boned” by the vehicle of Robert Saunders, 60, of Waverly.

Saunders was transported by helicopter to Bryan Medical Center’s west campus in Lincoln with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
