marca su 10mo Aniversario con Cumbre

C

uando la Oficina de Estudios Latinos y Latinoamericanos (OLLAS por sus siglas en inglés) de la Universidad de Nebraska lleve a cabo su evento Cumbre el 8 y 9 de noviembre de este año, marcará el 10mo aniversario para este centro dedicado a fomentar la participación ciudadana, la investigación aplicada y a brindar una enseñanza educativa dentro y fuera del salón de clases.

OLLAS convoca esta cumbre periódica con estudiosos, creadores de políticas, organizadores comunitarios, trabajadores y estudiantes para discutir las cuestiones que son críticas para los latinos y los inmigrantes, además de para considerar la agenda latina para un cambio social en el nuevo milenio.

Cumbre comienza con una recepción de inauguración durante el Viernes en el Marriott Courtyard en Aksarben Village. El programa completo para el sábado en el edificio del College of Public Affairs and Community Service en el campus principal de la UNO contará con presentaciones y paneles con personas de ambas costas, desde México y Uruguay hasta del propio Omaha.

El educador, autor y activista Pedro Noguera, ganador de varios premios, dará la presentación del sábado durante el gran almuerzo enfocándose en la Educación, Inmigración y Derechos Civiles en el Siglo XXI. El costo para asistir a dicha presentación es de $50, mientras que el resto de la cumbre es gratuita y está abierta al público.

Lourdes Gouveia, profesora en la UNO y Directora de OLLAS, dice que Cumbre es una buena reflexión sobre aquello de lo que se trata esta organización con 10 años de vida.

“Este evento se definió desde un inicio como un distintivo de que somos como centro. Una de las misiones principales es que esta no es una unidad académica convencional sino una que derriba las barreras contra el aprendizaje. Nosotros llevamos las oportunidades del aprendizaje de alta calidad hacia nuestras comunidades y fuera de la Universidad, tanto en español como en inglés, para que todos puedan tener el privilegio de tener acceso a la mejor investigación, el mejor análisis y a las mejores mentes. Todo se hace para facilitar las conversaciones que necesitamos tener y para aprender que es lo que necesitamos aprender para poder resolver juntos las cuestiones urgentes de las comunidades.

“Pensamos que la democratización de la información es muy importante y Cumbre es una forma de democratizar la información de calidad al contar con las mejores herramientas disponibles para entender nuestras experiencias y retos como una comunidad y como una sociedad. Tratamos de hacer que el pro-

grama sea inclusivo. Hasta preguntamos ‘¿Quién se está perdiendo esta conversación? ¿Quién debe estar en esta mesa y no en aquella?’”.

Ella dice que Cumbre es un espacio “dónde venimos a aprender, en donde realizamos un análisis de lo que hemos hecho y aprendido, de donde estamos y que tan bien hacemos las cosas – como latinos, como estudiosos en nuestro ámbito, como comunidad y como Estado”. El evento no es un “ejercicio fútil en la academia”, pues ella nos dice que “es un proceso para llevarnos a las preguntas que siguen. Nuestro primer panel establecerá el contexto en un micro nivel con algunas de las más grandes tendencias en América Latina. Después tenemos un panel que da seguimiento a cómo estas transformaciones se están desarrollando en los EE.UU., así como el efecto que tienen sobre las comunidades latinas. Otro panel examinará en donde se encuentran los latinos en términos de cambios demográficos y condiciones socioeconómicas”.

La cumbre no está limitada a los académicos pues incluye diversos organizadores como Sergio Sosa, Director del Omaha Heartland Workers Center, cuya organización ayuda a desarrollar líderes entre las poblaciones de inmigrantes de la clase trabajadora.

informadas sobre los retos y oportunidades a los que se enfrentan los latinos en cuanto a la educación.

“Es un sociólogo que también puede hablar sobre fuerzas y causas sistémicas, llegando al nivel de las escuelas locales”, mencionó Gouveia. “Es Director Ejecutivo del Centro Metropolitano para Educación Urbana en Nueva York y eso es perfecto pues nuestro mundo cada día es más urbano y se transforma en una metrópolis. Es alguien con ideas sobre cómo sobrepasar las barreras en la educación, incluyendo los cambios necesarios en las políticas actuales.

“Tenemos a alguien que puede enriquecer las conversaciones al ser Afro-Latino, un estudioso, un activista que ha lidiado personalmente con las cuestiones que afectan a los Afroamericanos y a los Latinos, en especial con los retos y barreras que encuentran para alcanzar logros educacionales. Él puede observar a través de varios lentes y hablar sobre ello y eso es lo que estamos buscando”.

Ella dice que OLLAS fue formado en respuesta a las preguntas y cuestiones que emergieron a razón de una oleada de nuevos inmigrantes, así como por la necesidad de brindar datos reales a quienes crean las políticas en relación al impacto de los latinos. Nos habla sobre como Cumbre ayuda a determinar “cuáles son las preguntas que deberíamos estar haciendo, así como los proyectos colaborativos en los que deberíamos par-

ticipar durante la siguiente década. Necesitamos saber cómo pueden ser los siguientes diez años y como debe ser el trabajo que realizaremos. En muchas maneras este es el contexto para ese trabajo, siempre informando a la comunidad sobre nuestro trabajo. Esperamos desencadenar tantas conversaciones en ese sentido como nos sea posible y después, a través de las reuniones comunitarias en las que participamos con nuestros socios, realizar sesiones informativas con los trabajadores y con otros miembros de la comunidad”.

Para ayudar a brindar un patrón para las discusiones que suceden después de Cumbre, ella dice: “Estoy pidiendo a los presentadores y paneles, en la medida que ello sea posible, que al final se llegue a recomendaciones sobre las políticas o bien que presenten sus propias conclusiones en relación con las implicaciones de lo que fue discutido, en donde necesita haber un cambio en todos los niveles. Les estoy pidiendo que sugieran el tipo de políticas que necesitan cambiar o el tipo de oportunidades educativas que necesitan surgir o el tipo de barreras que necesitan derribarse, así como la manera en que podemos lograrlo”.

The summit is not limited to academic types but includes grassroots organizers such as Omaha Heartland Workers Center director Sergio Sosa, whose organization helps develop leaders among workingclass immigrant populations.

She says keynoter Noguera is one of several speakers talking at Cumbre who can offer informed perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing young Latinos in education.

“He’s a sociologist who can also speak about systemic forces and causes all the way down to the local school level,” says Gouveia. “He’s executive director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education in New York City and that is perfect because our world is increasingly urban and metropolitan. He’s a firstrate voice on ways to overcome educational barriers, including policy changes that are necessary.

“Most compelling to me is here is someone who can enrich the conversations by being an Afro-Latino, a scholar, an activist who has dealt personally with issues affecting African Americans and Latinos, especially their challenges and barriers to educational achievement. He can speak through various lenses and that’s very defining for us. That’s we look for.”

hen the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Office of Latino and Latin American Studies holds its Nov. 8-9 Cumbre event, it will mark 10 years for this center dedicated to community engagement, applied research and teaching inside and outside the classroom.

OLLAS convenes this periodic summit of scholars, policymakers, community organizers, workers and students to discuss issues critical to Latinos and migrants and to consider the Latino agenda for social change in the new millennium.

Cumbre kicks off with a Friday night opening reception at the Marriott Courtyard in Aksarben Village.

The all-day Saturday program at the College of Public Affairs and Community Service building on the main UNO campus will feature panels and presentations by speakers from both coasts, Mexico, Uruguay and Omaha’s own backyard.

Award-winning educator, author and activist Pedro Noguera will deliver the Saturday luncheon keynote address on the topic of Education, Immigration and Civil Rights in the 21st Century. The luncheon keynote is $50 but the rest of the summit is free and open to the public.

Lourdes Gouveia, a UNO professor and the director of OLLAS, says Cumbre is a good reflection of what the 10-year-old organization is all about.

“The summit came to be defined from the start as a signature of who we are as a center. One of the main missions is that this is not a conventional academic unit but one that tears down walls of learning. We take high quality learning opportunities outside of the university to our communities, both grassroots and grass tops, in Spanish and in English, so that everyone is as privileged as we are to access the best research, analysis and minds.

It’s all done to facilitate the conversations we need to have and to learn what we need to learn in order to address the urgent issues of our communities together.

“We think the democratization of the information is terribly important and Cumbre is one way to democratize quality information and to have the best tools available to understand our experiences and challenges as a community and a society. We try very hard to make the program inclusive. We ask, ‘Who’s missing from this conversation? Who should be at this table that’s not there?’”

She says Cumbre is a space “where we come to learn, where we take stock of what we’ve done and learned, of where we are, how we’re doing – as Latinos, as scholars in our field, as a community, as a state.” Far from being “a futile exercise in academia,” she says “it is a process to take us to the next questions. The first panel will set the context at the micro level with some of the large trends in Latin America. Then a follow-up panel will look at how these transformations are playing out in the U.S. and affecting Latino communities. Another panel will

of new immigrants and the need to provide hard data on Latino impact for policymakers. She says Cumbre helps determine “what are the questions we should be asking, what are the collaborative projects we should be engaging in in the next decade. We need to know what the next 10 years should look like, what should the work we’re doing be looking like. In many ways this is the context for that work. It always informs our work in the community. We hope to trigger as many of those conversations as possible and then through community meetings in which we’re involved with our partners, we have debriefings with workers and other community members.”

To help provide a template for discussions that happen after Cumbre she says, “I’m asking presenters and panels, to as much as possible at the end, arrive at policy recommendations or their own conclusions about the implications of whatever was discussed, where change needs to happen at any level. I’m asking them to suggest what kind of policies need to change or what kind of educational opportunities need to appear or what kind of barriers need to come down and how do we do that.”

Estrategas deportivos hablan sobre sus actividades en el fútbol a campo cerrado

l deporte de las patadas arrancó su temporada invernal en Omaha, presentando diversos torneos para la comunidad Hispana. Todos ellos con una gran trayectoria y nivel deportivo, lo cual permite figurar una reñida contienda por las respectivas copas de campeonato, 2013-2014.

El más antiguo del que se tiene registro, es el South Omaha Interligas, antes llamado Latinos Unidos. Su fundador y actual director, Sergio Martínez, comenzó actividades desde el 2002 y hoy se dice listo para una temporada más de juego.

“Actualmente tenemos 40 equipos participantes, sumando más de 600 jugadores que cada domingo estarán enfrentándose en las dos locaciones que tenemos disponibles”, dijo.

Llama la atención que uno de los temas que abordo Martínez, fue la lucha por cambiar la idea negativa que se tienen del jugador hispano, al considerársele agresivo o indisciplinado.

“Yo siento que estamos atorados en este asunto porque en los últimos años no ha mejorado la imagen de los latinos. Pienso que su comportamiento es algo cultural que los mismos medios de comunicación promueven... Incluso me ha tocado ver a niños de 7 años gritándole al árbitro, no porque lo sientan sino por imitar al papá, lo que demuestra que este es un asunto que se hereda a los hijos y tenemos que evitarlo”, enfatizó.

Al mismo tiempo resalto que la tarea de mejorar este asunto recae en un conjunto, “tanto en el directivo de un torneo, como en entrenadores, jugadores y la misma afición”.

Satisfactoriamente Martinez señaló cada vez más equipos anglozajones buscan jugar con los Latinos.

“En los mismos equipos hay más jugadores de otras nacionalidades, que buscan la competitividad que ofrecemos los Hispanos y esta es una realidad no solo en los torneos de adultos sino también en las categorías infantiles. A ellos [los anglozajones], les encanta jugar con los Latinos por la chispa que tienen para mover el balón, usando técnicas culturales que no se aprenden en

ROGELIO GUERRERO la cancha, porque la forma de juego Hispano es algo que se trae en la sangre”.

Analizando dicho comentario, el también entrenador explicó que la técnica americana de juego busca la perfección sobre la base de la repetición y práctica, mientras que en el Latino la pasión es un motor que impulsa su juego, una pasión que en ocasiones se desborda “...y es ahí donde debemos aprender a controlarnos para tener un comportamiento más deportivo”.

Martinez concluyó indicando que el arbitraje suele ser punto de polémica, “sin embargo, nosotros cumplimos todas las indicaciones del gobierno del estado y podemos decir que nuestro evento sigue siendo una actividad completamente familiar, que ofrece alternativas de juego y de entretenimiento para todos los que les gusta este deporte”.

Por otro lado, el Torneo del South O Fútbol Club, que resalta la participación de equipos femeninos, también comenzó actividades invernales.

Para esta temporada estarán jugando los días domingos y cuentan con un registro de 8 equipos de mujeres y 6 equipos mixtos. En dichos conjuntos se puede apreciar un rango de edad entre los 13 y 40 años.

Su actual presidente, Rogelio Guerrero, destacó que el nivel de juego de la mujer latina en Omaha está creciendo en sus filas. “Esto se debe a que ellas no dejan de jugar durante todo el año, lo que permite que aquellos equipos que comenzaron hace no mucho tiempo, hoy puedan ser los que se están llevando los trofeos de primer lugar. Tan solo recordemos que hace unos años había siempre los mismos equipos arrasando con todos los premios, sin embargo, hoy les cuesta más trabajo al tener que enfrentarse a equipos como Velosity, Colo-Colo, Juventus o Twety’s”.

Guerrero, quien tiene una trayectoria en el fútbol de local de 17 años, dijo haber tomado la decisión de concentrarse más en las actividades de juego para las mujeres, debido a que en Omaha no había alternativas de juego o entrenamiento que cubrirán la demanda que estaba surgiendo.

“Me ha tocado armar equipos donde las jugadoras no saben ni siquiera patear el balón, pero traen las ganas de aprender. Al final es muy satisfactorio ver que con el paso del tiempo logran convertirse en buenas jugadoras”.

Gratamente, Guerrero indico que la reputación de las jugadoras de Omaha ha crecido tanto, que actualmente se tienen a equipos foráneos interesados en algunos amistosos.

“Por lo pronto ya se están organizando equipos en Schuyler, Nebraska, para formar un representativo que habrá de venir el próximo 24 de noviembre, para un par-

Por lo pronto, Guerrero estará realizando tres torneos invernales, que le permitan ofrecer alternativas de juego hasta la última semana de marzo próximo, figurando cerrar la temporada con un mayor número de equipos registrados.

Finalmente, habrá que hablar también del Torneo La Amistad, el cual seguirá su tradición de jugar los días sábados.

Este es su noveno año de actividades invernales y son 14 equipos los que se encuentran ya inscritos, rebasando los 200 jugadores, en una misma categoría.

Analizando la evolución del evento, Heriberto Lira, director de La Amistad, declaró: “Es inegable que cada vez hay más demanda de torneos locales por parte de la comunidad latina. Pese a que nosotros realizamos nuestros partidos los días sábados y muchos jugadores deben trabajar, aún así la gente quiere jugar y esta presente en el evento”.

Lira abordó el tema de la derrama económica que cada torneo significa para la ciudad, considerando que no solo sirven para ofrecer alternativas de distracción familiar, sino también para dejar ingresos a todos los que tienen algún tipo de servicio relacionado con este deporte.

“Como ejemplo, podemos señalar que en cada temporada más de la mitad de los equipos llegan bien equipados y con uniformes nuevos, algo que no se exige en los eventos, pero que si permite figurar el flujo de dinero que hay en torno a la práctica del fútbol”.

Al hablar del precio que se paga por jugar en La Amistad, Lira generalizó subrayando que actualmente hay una tarifa muy equitativa en los diversos torneos locales, figurando que cada jugador termina pagando una cuota aproximada de 10 dólares por cada partido.

Por último, Heriberto quiso cerrar sus cometarios con un llamado para acercarse y apoyar el deporte del fútbol, ya sea practicándolo o asistiendo como porra de algún equipo, lo cual es también una manera de distracción que se tienen cada fin de semana en Omaha, subrayando la importancia de tener una participación intachable que permita seguir abriendo más puertas al futbol hispano.

De esta forma, quedan plasmadas las declaraciones de algunos directivos deportivos que se suman al total de personas que en Omaha, están trabajando en torno al balompié; un deporte que sigue en crecimiento dentro de la comunidad Latina, y que semanalmente estará reportando sus novedades a esta publicación.

BRIEFS Public Meeting The City of Omaha invites area residents to attend a public information meeting to be held on Thursday, Nov. 14 from 5-7 p.m. The location of the meeting is the Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center located at 2825 Y Street. The meeting will focus on the proposed replacement of the Q Street Bridge, located between 26th and 27th Streets. The city has indicated that the current structure is “deficient and need to be replaced to preserve the reliability of the transportation system in South Omaha.” Area residents that cannot attend the meeting and wish to voice their comments can submit their concerns at movingomaha.com or they are welcome to visit the South Omaha Public Library to submit a form in person. The deadline to submit comments is Nov. 29.

Sports strategists talk about their current activities in soccer

he run and kick sport is back in Omaha for the winter season thanks to several tournaments within the Hispanic community. All of them maintain a high level of quality which makes the run for each tournament title during the 20132014 season a very interesting proposition.

The oldest one of them all is the South Omaha Interligas, previously called Latinos Unidos (Latinos United).

Sergio Martinez, founder and current Director, started way back in 2002… and is ready for more.

“We currently have 40 teams with over 600 players that gather every Sunday at the two locations available for the tournament,” said Martinez.

It is interesting that Martinez mentions the hardship to change the negative idea people have about the Hispanic soccer player, who is usually thought of as an aggressive or undisciplined type of person.

“I believe we’ve been stuck on this topic for the last few years without improving the image of the Latino soccer player. I think that such behavior is a cultural thing that the media itself promotes… I’ve even seen 7 year old boys shouting at the referee, not because it’s how they feel but because they’re imitating their dad, and it shows us that this is something passed on to children, and we must stop it.”

At the same time, he said that in order to improve this, everyone must be part of the solution, with the participation of “the tournament director, the coaches, the players and the fans themselves.”

Martinez did point out that every day more and more teams in the United States are searching for Latino soccer players to join their ranks.

“These teams now have more players from other nationalities since they want that competitive edge provided by Hispanics, and this isn’t only happening in the tournaments for adults since we also see it in kid’s tournaments. They love Latinos because of the way they

move the ball, using cultural techniques that you can’t learn on the field because the way we Hispanics play soccer is something that is in our blood.”

Further analyzing this comment, Martinez – who is also a coach – explained that the game technique of US soccer players seeks to achieve perfection by repeating and practicing every move over and over again, but for Latinos passion is the engine that drives their game, a passion that sometimes overflows “…and it is there that we must learn to control ourselves so we can always be competitive but within the rules of the game.”

Martinez had one final comment, mentioning that referees usually are a hot topic, “however, we comply with all instructions from the State Government and we can say that our event still is family friendly, offering a wholesome source of entertainment for those that love sports.”

Another popular Tournament is the South O Futbol Club, which highlights the participation of female teams during the winter activities.

For this season, they will be playing on Sundays with 8 female teams and 6 mixed teams with soccer players between the ages of 13 and 40.

Rogelio Guerrero, its current President, highlighted the skill level of Latinas in Omaha. “This is because they never stop and play all year long, and this allows the teams, which are relatively new, to have a great shot at winning the tournament. We only need to remember that, for several years, the same teams won over and over again, but this time it will be harder since they have to face teams such as Velosity, Colo-Colo, Juventus or Twety’s”.

Guerrero, who’s been part of the local soccer scene for a while, has said that he decided to focus on female teams since Omaha didn’t have another option for them to train or play the sport they love.

“I’ve even had a chance to work with teams where the women didn’t even know how to kick the ball, but they definitely wanted to learn and grow. In the end, it is very fulfilling when I see how they become great players.”

Guerrero mentioned that the reputation of female soccer players in Omaha has grown so much that there are several foreign teams interested in playing friendly matches.

“For now we have a team from Schuyler, Nebraska that will be coming to our city on November 24 for a friendly match. There are other established leagues in

Lincoln and Denison that would like to play at Omaha, and that motivates us and allows us to see that we’re on the right path,” he said.

For now, Guerrero will be running three winter tournaments that will be going strong until the last week of March, 2014, and he’s sure that the season will end with even more teams that will soon register.

We also have to talk about the Torneo de La Amistad (Friendship Tournament), which is a tradition that will carry on during matches on Saturdays.

This is the ninth year of winter activities, and 14 teams with over 200 players have already registered.

Heriberto Lira, Director of La Amistad, analyzed the evolution of this event and said: “We can’t deny that as time goes by there is a bigger demand for local tournaments for the Latino community. Even though we have several matches on Saturdays and a lot of the players have a regular job, people still want to play and be a part of the event itself.”

Lira also talked about the extra economic income that each tournament brings to the city since the tournaments aren’t only a great alternative for families that want to have fun, they’re also a source of income for all of those that supply a service related to this sport.

“For example, we can point out that during each season over half of the teams come fully equipped with brand new uniforms, something that isn’t required for tournaments, and that helps us realize how much money is spent for this sport.”

When talking about the fee that needs to be paid to play in La Amistad, Lira said that the fee is very much at the same level as other local tournaments since each player must pay about $10 per game.

As his final comment, Heriberto wanted to mention that everyone should participate for the greater good of soccer, either by showing their support for the teams or by actually playing the game, since it’s a great way for families in Omaha to make the most of their weekend, not to mention the importance of having another venue for Hispanic soccer to shine.

This is what some of those involved in the local soccer scene at Omaha had to say about their projects, giving their all for a sport that continues to grow within the Latino community, and which we’ll be covering here on a weekly basis.

President’s Weekly Address During an address on Nov. 2, President Obama indicated that in order to keep growing our economy we must work together to pass a budget that reflects our priorities as a nation, in fact he encourages business leaders from around the world to choose, invest and create jobs in America. Obama indicated that if we do not make the correct choices and pick the right priorities now, “we could hinder growth and opportunity for decades and leave our children with something less.” With so much at stake, the President encourages Congress to “pass a budget that cuts things we don’t need, and closes wasteful tax loopholes that don’t create jobs, so that we can free up resources for things that actually create jobs and growth.”

College Fair The Victory Boxing Club and Community Center will be hosting their first annual Higher Education Initiative and College Fair on Thursday, Nov.7 from 4 to 6 p.m. During the event, high school participants will be exposed to college enrollment procedures, scholarship information and will have the opportunity to network with freshman advisors from Metro Community College, Bellevue University and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Hasta que estuve en la preparatoria comprendí que gracias a mi papá, mi familia y yo legalizamos nuestra situación en este país”, comentó Viridiana Almanza, coordinadora y organizadora de DREAMers Project Coalition.

“Mis padres son de Guanajuato y yo nací en Michoacán – explicó Almanza -, pero me trajeron sin documentos a Estados Unidos cuando tenía 6 años.

Mis padres comenzaron a trabajar en el campo en California, pero era muy duro para mi mamá porque ella había sido enfermera en México”.

Fue gracias a la Amnistía Migratoria promulgada por el expresidente Ronald Reagan en 1986, que el padre de Almanza adquirió la ciudadanía norteamericana y tramitó los papeles para su familia.

El conocer sus raíces motivó a Almanza a estudiar una Licenciatura en Historia y en Ciencias Políticas en la Universidad de Nebraska en Kearney: “Obtuve mi certificado en mayo del 2008 y desde hace tiempo he tenido muchísimas oportunidades de saber más sobre la política y cuestiones sociales del país, y principalmente sobre inmigración”.

Almanza es una estudiante becaria ejemplar, con excelente promedio, y sobre todo, disciplinada y participativa, quien reconoció “tener la fortuna de viajar por muchos países para conocer más sobre su cultura”, porque su meta es “llegar a laborar algún día en las Naciones Unidas”.

Durante una de sus salidas a la República Checa, Almanza recorrió 10 países donde observó vestigios comunistas: “Me impresionó Eslovaquia por el ambiente que se respira con algunos edificios todavía pintados del mismo color; y me gustó mucho Austria donde todo es bello, lleno de castillos y realeza. Me encanta viajar y por medio de la escuela he conocido latinoamérica, y me han encantado países como Colombia. Igualmente he viajado en Estados Unidos, y a pesar de haber vivido en Europa, ¡no cambiaría este país por nada!.

Las ventajas y oportunidades que tenemos son inmensas y muchas veces no sabemos apreciarlas”.

Aunque, “como en cualquier nación existen problemas, mayormente porque se le debe dar solución a la Reforma Inmigratoria, Estados Unidos es un lugar maravilloso para educarte y formar una familia. Aunque yo sigo diciendo que soy originaria de México porque estoy muy orgullosa de mis orígenes, siempre reconozco que aquí vivimos cómodamente y podemos alcanzar nuestros sueños y tener éxito”. Ése es el pensamiento que Almanza comparte con quienes reciben apoyo de DREAMers Project Coalition: “Es un proyecto para los jóvenes inmigrantes y sus familias, y para la comunidad entera.

Está formado por las organizaciones Nebraska Appleseed, American Civil Liberties Union-NE, Justice for our Neighbors, Heartland Workers Center, Catholic Charities y Latino Center of the Midlands. Yo me encuentro a su cargo y formamos líderes en nuestra sociedad, dándoles información y motivación para que sepan que sí hay maneras de terminar la universidad. Les brindamos asistencia legal y ellos comparten sus historias, participan en en conferencias de prensa, tienen reuniones con los senadores y los miembros de la Casa de Representantes y forman parte de las marchas para que el gobierno se de cuenta de que necesitan una solución. Viridiana Almanza,

a young dreamer who has been all over the world and would never want to stop living in the US

It wasn’t until I was in high school that I understood that thanks to my dad, my family and I were able to legalize our status in this country,” said Viridiana Almanza, coordinator and event planner for the DREAMers Project Coalition. “My parents are from Guanajuato, and I was born in Michoacan – explained Almanza –, but they brought me here without the proper documentation when I was only 6 years old. My parents started to work in the fields of California, but this was very hard on my mother because she had been sick in Mexico.”

It was thanks to the 1986 immigration amnesty program by former President Ronald Reagan that Almanza’s father was able to secure his citizenship in order to obtain the proper documentation for his family to live legally here. Getting to know her roots motivated Almanza to study for her Bachelor’s Degree in History and Political Science from the Universidad of Nebraska at Kearney: “I got my degree on May, 2008, and for a long time I’ve had several opportunities to learn even more about politics and social issues in the country, specifically on the topic of immigration.”

Almanza is an exemplary scholarship student with an excellent GPA and, above all, a very disciplined and active person who acknowledges that she’s “very fortunate to have traveled to so many countries to know more about their culture,” because her goal is to “one day work at the United Nations.” During one of her trips to the Czech Republic, Almanza visited 10 countries where she witnessed traces of communism: “I was impressed

by Slovakia due to the ambiance, with some buildings that are still the same color; I also liked Austria because everything is beautiful, filled with castles and royalty. I love to travel and thanks to my studies I’ve been able to get to know several Latin American countries, and I’ve loved countries like Colombia. I’ve also traveled within the US and, even though I’ve lived in Europe, I would

never want to stop living here! The advantages and opportunities presented to us are huge, and we sometimes don’t appreciate them.”

Even though, “as is the case with any Nation, there are some problems, in particular because of the Immigration Reform, but the United States is a wonderful place to study and raise a family. Although I still say I’m originally from Mexico, because I’m proud of my roots, I always acknowledge we are very comfortable here, and we definitely have a chance to make our dreams come true and be very successful.”

This is what Almanza shares with those supported by the DREAMers Project Coalition: “It is a project for young immigrants and their families, for the whole community. It is a project by Nebraska Appleseed, American Civil Liberties UnionNE, Justice for our Neighbors, Heartland Workers Center, Catholic Charities and the Latino Center of the Midlands. I’m in charge of the project, and we form leaders in our society by providing them with all the information and motivation we can so that they know there is a way to finish College. We provide them with legal aid and share with them our stories; they participate in press conferences, go to meetings with Senators and with members from the House of Representatives and take part in protests so that the Government can realize that they need a solution. They’re young individuals who are very prepared (some of them with a Master’s Degree), and who wish to triumph, and all they need is the proper documentation to be able to work.”
