Creo que hay un montón de malentendidos y un desconecte sobre lo que va a ocurrir en realidad,” dijo la activista local de Fremont, Krista Anderson, de la organización Fremont ¡Sí! cuando hablo sobre las disposiciones de vivienda de la Ordenanza 5165 de Fremont.

El Consejo Municipal de Fremont dio a los votantes la oportunidad de votar sobre las disposiciones de vivienda de la Ordenanza 5161 el 11 de febrero. Anderson, sus colegas y alrededor de quinientos seguidores están decepcionados con el resultado de la elección especial. “Creo que mi reacción fue de tristeza, decepción y luego furia,” dijo Anderson. En una votación de 60 a 40 por ciento los residentes de Fremont votaron para permitir que las disposiciones de vivienda de la Ordenanza 5165 entren en vigor. Según Anderson, la ordenanza está certificada y la ciudad de Fremont tiene treinta días para ponerla en práctica.

De acuerdo con Anderson “la policía ha proporcionado una tabla completa de las medidas que van a tomar, pero en cuanto a las horas que van a estar abiertos, saber si la estación de policía será el único sitio para obtener el permiso, saber lo que la gente

tendrá que hacer si quieren encontrar a alguien para ser su agente para ir a por ellos por el permiso, no sabemos lo que eso implicaría.” De hecho, esta activista local no es la única que se siente insegura acerca de cómo la ordenanza afectará a los residentes del área. La colega de Anderson de la organización de Fremont ¡Sí! Virginia Meyer mencionó que muchos residentes en Fremont están preocupados, afirmando que “estamos escuchando las preocupaciones de la comunidad. He visto en Twitter que la gente está diciendo que no van a decirle a la gente que son de Fremont ya y que quieren vivir en una nueva ciudad y ese tipo de cosas.”

Una de las principales preocupaciones de Anderson es que la ciudad de Fremont tendrá que pagar un alto precio por defender la Ordenanza 5165 en corte. “El historial de una legislación de este tipo en otras ciudades pequeñas no es bueno. La ciudad se expone a más demandas por discriminación e impuestos más altos,” dijo Anderson.

Ella señala que simplemente hará que la gente piensa que Fremont se resiste al cambio y hará que la gente crea que Fremont no es una comunidad inclusiva. “Creo que la gente se marchará,” dijo un Anderson entristecida, y agregó que “la gente no quiere pasar por la molestia y no quieren hacer frente a la discriminación.”

Varios de los ex estudiantes multiculturales de Anderson ya se han encontrado con comentarios poco amables desde la votación el 11 de febrero, pero ella les está animando para mantenerse fuertes. “Los inmigrantes son fuertes, trabajadoras, y tienen mucha fe y seguirán siendo de esa manera , esta ordenanza no va a cambiar eso,” señaló Anderson, y agregó que “vamos a seguir apoyando a nuestra población latina y trabajar para proporcionar información.”

A pesar de que los resultados de la elección son desfavorables, Anderson y Meyer señalan que no se dará por vencidas. “Una de las cosas que haremos es organizar cursos de capacitación para que las personas sepan cómo documentar y reportar la discriminación,” dijo Anderson. Anderson aclaró que ella y sus colegas se mantendrán el compromiso de educar a los residentes de Fremont para que sepan qué la

Ordenanza 5165 significa para ellos y sus familias.

“El ACLU nos ha comunicado que estarán ayudando a documentar y apoyar a las personas que podrían ser víctimas de discriminación,” agregó Meyer.

Además de los esfuerzos de educación Anderson y Meyer tienen planes de trabajar en algunas actividades de participación de la comunidad que favorezcan la diversidad y la inclusión en Fremont.

En los días previos a la elección especial, Anderson señaló que “las iglesias se reunieron, la gente empezó a hablar y estaban abiertos a compartir sus puntos de vista,” y su organización desea sacar provecho de esto para alentar a la gente de Fremont a trabajar juntos. “Tenemos quinientos letreros en los patios de la gente por toda la ciudad que dicen ‘Fremont ¡Sí!” Esas son las personas que están plenamente comprometidas y nadie puede quitarnos eso,” dijo una Meyer apasionada.

Por ahora los residentes de Fremont tendrán que esperar pacientemente hasta que la ordenanza entre en vigencia. “Hay mucho en el aire en cuanto a lo que van hacer el Consejo Municipal y el departamento de policía para que esto realmente funcione,” concluyó Meyer.

Housing Provisions of Ordinance 5165 to Take Effect After Special Election in Fremont

I think there is a lot of misunderstanding and disconnect about what is going to actually happen,” said local Fremont activist, Krista Anderson, of the organization Fremont Yes! when talking about the housing provisions of Fremont Ordinance 5165.

The Fremont City Council gave voters an opportunity to vote on the housing provisions of Ordinance 5161 on February 11. Anderson, her colleagues and around five-hundred supporters are disappointed with the outcome of the special election. “I think my reaction went from sadness, disappointment to anger,” said Anderson. In a 6040 percent vote the residents of Fremont voted to allow the housing provisions of Ordinance 5165 to take effect. According to Anderson, the ordinance is certified and the City of Fremont has thirty days to implement it.

According to Anderson “the police have outlined the full chart of the steps they are going to take, but as far as the hours they are going to be open, as far as knowing whether the police station will be the only location, we don’t know what people will have to do if they want to find someone to be their agent to go in for them, we don’t know what that will involve.” In fact, this local activist is not the only one that feels uncertain about how the ordinance will affect area residents. Anderson’s colleague from the organization Fremont Yes! Virginia Meyer mentioned many residents in Fremont are worried, stating “we are hearing concerns from the community.

I’ve seen on Twitter that people are saying they are not going to tell people they are from Fremont anymore and that they want a new hometown and that type of thing.”

One of Anderson’s main concerns is that the City of Fremont will eventually have to pay a high price to defend Ordinance 5165 in court. “The track record for legislation like this in other small towns is not good. It opens us up for more discrimination lawsuits and higher taxes,” said Anderson.

Although the drafters of Ordinance 5165 crafted this particular piece of legislation to discourage immigrants from settling in Fremont, Anderson points out that this ordinance will not address illegal immigration in Fremont. She points out that it will simply make people think that Fremont is resistant to change and will make people believe Fremont is not an inclusive community.

“I think people will be leaving,” said a saddened Anderson, adding “people won’t want to go through the hassle and they don’t want to deal with the discrimination.” Several of Anderson’s former multicultural students have already encountered unkind comments since the February 11 vote but she is encouraging them to stay strong. “Immigrants are strong, hard-working, they have a lot of faith and they will continue to be that way, this ordinance will not change that,” pointed out Anderson, adding “we are going to continue to support our Latino population and work to provide them with information.”

Even though the results of the election are unfavorable, Anderson and Meyer point out that they will not give up. “One of the things we will be doing

is hosting trainings so people know how to document and report discrimination,” said Anderson. Anderson clarified that she and her colleagues will remain committed to educating the residents of Fremont so they know what Ordinance 5165 means for them and their families. “The ACLU told us they will be helping to document and support people who might be discriminated against,” added Meyer.

Apart from education efforts Anderson and Meyer have plans of working on some community engagement activities that will encourage diversity and inclusiveness in Fremont. In the days leading up to the special election, Anderson pointed out that “the

churches came together, people started talking and were open about sharing their views,” and her organization wishes to capitalize on that teamwork to encourage the people of Fremont to work together.

“We have five-hundred yard signs in people’s yards all around town that say ‘Fremont Yes!,’ those are people that are fully committed and no one can take that away from us,” said a passionate Meyer.

For now the residents of Fremont will have to wait patiently until the ordinance takes effect. “A lot is up in the air as far as what the City Council and what the police force is going to do to make this actually work,” concluded Meyer.

onvertirse en un guerrero que grita por una nueva oportunidad de vida, fue un momento crucial en la vida de un hombre que toco fondo, en la soledad de una prisión federal. Fue una purificación que imploro perdón al Cristo en el cual creyó, comenzando así una nueva vida hasta convertirse en una figura admirada y respetada en la ciudad de Omaha, lugar donde hoy figura como pastor cristiano, entrenador de boxeo, líder social, mentor, organizador comunitario, padre de familia y más recientemente figura literaria. Él es: Servando Perales.

“Mi niñez transcurrió con un padre alcohólico que abusaba de mi madre, hasta el día en que finalmente nos abandono. Tenía yo 12 años y este hecho sembró un coraje profundo en mi corazón...”, comentó Perales al momento de comenzar la entrevista en la que hablaría de su participación en el libro titulado El Grito de un Guerrero, escrito por Paula Determan.

“Nunca pensé que mi vida sería escrita en una obra como esta, pero si sabía que tenía mucho que contar, porque he tenido muchas experiencias que de cierta manera se juntaron para llevarme a un profundo abismo. En el libro habló incluso del asalto sexual que sufrí a los 12 años, lo cual nunca había comentado. De hecho, mi madre se ha enterado recientemente cuando lo leyó... Lloro y me pidió perdón por no haber estado ahí, sin embargo, fue un hecho que no fue su culpa y así se lo dije”, narró Perales.

“De lo más grato que recuerdo fue mi comienzo en el mundo del boxeo. Era bueno y rápidamente me convertí en una promesa pugilista. Me llamaban el Rápido Perales y a los 16 años era considerado el favorito en el Torneo por los Guantes de Oro de Nebraska [en la división de 125 libras].

Incluso también me calificaban como el boxeador más popular durante ese evento. Lamentablemente tome decisiones verdaderamente malas. Comence a juntarme con malas amistades y me revele, rompiéndole el corazón a muchas personas”.

En esa época, Servando no mostraba respeto por ninguna autoridad. Incluso su madre recibió una carta informándole que le habían expulsado de la escuela secundaria del Sur, enfatizando que no podría regresar por ser considerado “una mala influencia en toda la escuela”.

“Me sentía solo y extrañaba a mis amigos. Sin embargo, seguí tomando malas decisiones y me puse frente a la escuela a vender marihuana, ácido, mescalina y eventualmente cocaína”, dijo.

Lamentablemente, con las drogas llegó también la violencia en las calles, las armas y los problemas con la ley hasta ser declarado oficialmente un criminal.

Una de las secciones del libro, publicado por Editorial Fuego Santo, es titulada “Vida Después de la Muerte”. Es ahí donde Perales narra su paso tras las rejas y el momento en el que todo cambio “cuando descubrí que había estado lamentando la ausencia de un padre, sin saber que tenía un padre celestial en el cielo. Fue entonces que me rendí completamente a Cristo”.

Al salir de prisión, Servando estaba convencido de retomar su carrera como boxeador y se fue a las Vegas. “Pero Dios tenía otros planes para mí. Me quería de regreso en Omaha para enfrentar una pelea mucho más grande e importante. Dios quería que hiciera algo para rescatar a los jóvenes...”

“La versión en inglés ya se está enviando a todos los Estados Unidos. Ahora estamos trabajando para poder imprimirlo en español...”, informó Servando.

En relación con los fondos que se colecten por la venta de dicho material, estos servirán para apoyar la compra de las instalaciones del Club Victory, el cuál ha sido el centro de operaciones de Perales y en el cual ha logrado cristalizar su proyecto de vida, congregando a decenas de jóvenes que ahí encuentra una alternativa para practicar el boxeo, alejándose de las pandillas, las drogas, “las malas decisiones e incluso para acercarse y conocer más del amor de Dios”, expuso Perales, pastor cristiano desde el 2004.

“Tarde 15 años para hacer este libro y fue publicado en el momento apropiado, porque en nuestros vecindarios siguen baleando gente y tenemos mucho trabajo que hacer para evitar que esto siga empeorando. Puedo decir que con este material estamos brindando esperanza y sobre todo estamos tocando vidas”, testificó el expugilista.

Recientemente, Servando recibió una carta de Carlos Rojas, quien purga una sentencia a cadena perpetua por haber asesinado a una persona a la que le estaba robando su automóvil. En ella, escribió: “El libro toco mi corazón y lo voy a compartir con otros prisioneros...”

Para este hombre quizá sea un poco tarde por qué ya esta en prisión, sin embargo, aun puede cambiar su actitud, dijo esperanzado Servando, subrayando que aunado a las cárceles, también escuelas y librerías estaban solicitando dicha impresión.

Al momento de abordar las desventajas que pueda tener el exponer su vida privada de una manera tan pública, Perales dijo con firmeza: Tengo más de 16 años entregado a Cristo y no me da temor o vergüenza hablar de lo malo que he hecho en mi vida. La mayoría de las personas que conozco en Omaha saben de mi paso por las drogas y la violencia. Maltrate a mucha gente y precisamente es ahí donde esta mi mayor testimonio, al afirmar que todos podemos cambiar y convertirnos en un guerrero que pueda gritar que está cansado de su vida pasada y listo para un nuevo comienzo”.

La madre de Perales fue la primer persona en leer el libro y es precisamente a ella a quien está dedicado dicho trabajo.

Por su parte, su esposa y sus cuatro hijos han aplaudido el contenido del mismo.

Sobre el futuro de Perales en el mundo literario, inicialmente se mostró renuente al enfatizar que no era esta su vocación, sin embargo, su rostro se iluminó al hablar del llanto de todos los boxeadores que en algún momento le han compartido sus historias. Jóvenes abusados, con padres en prisión, y un sin número de obstáculos en su vida que Servando desea escribir, “para que la gente les conozca y aprenda leyendo sobre ellos”.

De esta forma, dejo saber que hará un segundo material con este contenido, como otra herramienta más para seguir llevando su mensaje de evangelización y esperanza de cambio.

En una visión general, las palabras que aparecen en contraportada escritas por el doctor Tom Osborne, exentrenador en jefe de la Universidad de Nebraska en Lincoln y tres veces campeón nacional de fútbol colegial, dicen: “Servando ofrece un interesante relato de su viaje espiritual a través de una buena cantidad de dificultades y tribulaciones. Él ha llegado a un punto en el que está tratando de servir a los jóvenes a través del boxeo... Necesitamos más Servandos”.

Recordando esto, Perales solo dibujo una sonrisa humilde en su rostro y concluyo diciendo: “Solo deseo que Cristo siga actuando a través de este libro, en el cual esta plasmada la vida de un hombre normal que pudo cambiar. Y si yo puede hacerlo, otros podrán hacerlo también”.

The Cry of a Warrior A New Book That Narrates the Life of Servando Perales

ecoming a warrior who screamed for another shot at life was a crucial moment in the life of a man who had hit rock bottom in the loneliness of a Federal prison. It was a moment of purification, asking Christ for forgiveness, whom he believed in, and thus starting a new life on a path to becoming someone who is admired and respected in Omaha, a place where he lives as Christian pastor, boxing trainer, social leader, mentor, community organizer, family man and, most recently, as author. He is: Servando Perales.

“My childhood saw me living with an alcoholic dad who abused of my mother, up until he finally left us. I was 12 years old, and that sparked a flame filled with hate inside of my heart…,” said Perales at the beginning of an interviewed to discuss his part in the book The Cry of a Warrior, written by Paula Determan.

“I never thought that my life would be the basis of a book such as this, but I did know that I had a lot to tell because I’ve had many experiences that in a way helped to take me down into the abyss. In the book, I talk about the sexual assault I suffered when I was 12, which I had never talked about.

In fact, my mother recently learned about it when she read it… She cried and asked me to forgive her for not being there, but it wasn’t her fault and I made sure she knew that,” said Perales.

“One of my fondest memories is getting my first start in the world of boxing. I was good, and I quickly became a promising fighter. I was called Rapido Perales (Quick Perales), and when I was 16 I was already being considered a favorite for the Golden Gloves Tournament in Nebraska [in the 125 pound division]. I was even catalogued as the most popular boxer at that event. Unfortunately, I made some really bad calls. I started

hanging with the wrong crowd and ended acting up against the world, breaking the heart of a lot of people.”

During that time, Servando had no respect for authorities. His mother eventually received a letter informing her that he had been expelled from South High, with an emphasis placed on how he could not return because he was considered as “a bad influence for the whole school.”

“I was feeling lonely, and I missed my friends.

However, I continued making more bad decisions and stood outside of school selling pot, acid, mescaline and, eventually, cocaine,” he said.

Unfortunately, drugs led him down a path filled with violence in the streets, dangerous weapons, and trouble with the law until he was officially labeled a criminal.

by Editorial Fuego Santo, is titled “Vida Despues de la Muerte” (Life After Death). It is there that Perales talks about his life behind bars, and of the moment that changed it all “when I discovered that I had been lamenting the absence of my father, without knowing that I had a Holy Father in the sky. It was then that I fully devoted my life to Christ.”

After leaving prison, Servando was convinced about going back to a career as a boxer, which is why he went to Las Vegas. “But God had other plans for me. He wanted me back at Omaha for a much bigger and important fight. God wanted me to do something to rescue the young…”

Paula Determan’s book is 85 pages long and can be bought at Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com and at the Victory Boxing Club.

“The version in English is being shipped all over the United States. We’re also working to print it in Spanish…,” said Servando.

The funds collected from book sales will help towards purchasing the Victory Club, Perale’s main center of operations, a place where he has seen a lifelong project come to life, gathering dozens of young people who practice boxing while staying away from gangs, drugs, “and bad choices, and even to get closer to and learning about the love of God,” said Perales, who was ordained as Christian pastor in 2004.

“It took me 15 years to make this book, and it was published at the right time because people still continue to get shot in our neighborhoods and we have a lot of work ahead of us in order to keep this from happening anymore. I can say that with this book, we are bringing some hope for people, and we are touching many lives,” said the former boxer.

Recently, Servando received a letter from Carlos Rojas, serving a life sentence for murdering one individual when trying to steal his car. In it, he wrote: “This book touched my heart, and I’m going to share it with other inmates…”

For this man, it might be a bit too late since he’s already at prison, but he can still change his attitude towards life - said a hopeful Servando - mentioning that prisons, schools and libraries are now requesting copies of the book.

When talking about the cons for presenting his private life in such a public way, Perales said: “I’ve devoted my life to Christ for more than 16 years now, and I’m not afraid or embarrassed when talking about the wrongs I’ve done in my life. Most of the people I know in Omaha are aware of my past, they know about the drugs and the violence. I mistreated a lot of people, and that is why this is a strong statement because it can show them that all of us can change, becoming a warrior screaming at the top of our lungs about being tired of our past, ready for a new beginning.”

Perales’ mom was the first person who got a chance to read the finished product, and Perales has decided to dedicate this book to her.

We must also mention that Perales’ wife and their four sons have applauded the book.

About Perales’ future in the literary world, at first he stressed that it was not his first calling, but his eyes said otherwise when he talked about how he’s heard so many stories from all of the boxers he’s helped, young people who broke down in tears as talked about their life. Young people who were abused, with parents in jail, as well as several other obstacles that Servando wants to write about, “so that people get to know them in order to learn more by reading their story.”

This tells us that he’s thinking about working on a second book that focuses on this content, a book that will serve as a tool to bring his evangelic message filled with hope for a change.

The words in the inside cover from Doctor Tom Osborne, former Chief Trainer for the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and three times National College Soccer Champion, are as follows: “Servando offers an interesting tale about his spiritual journey trough trials and tribulations. He has reached a point where he’s trying to help young people through boxing… We need more Servandos.”

When reminded of this, Perales showed a humble smile in his face, saying: “I only wish that Christ continues to act through this book, a book that shows the life of a normal man that managed to make a change. If I can do it, hen other can do it as well.”

finales del mes pasado, Carolina Quezada, Directora Ejecutiva del Latino Center of the Midlands, presentó al nuevo Director de Educación Básica para Adultos (Adult Basic Education, ABE), el peruano Raúl Muñoz.

Originario de Lima, Muñoz estudió Leyes y Ciencias Políticas en su país, donde ejerció como abogado durante 7 años, trabajando en lo que entonces se conocía como el Instituto Peruano de Seguridad Social.

“Mi padre y mi hermano son abogados - explicó Muñoz -, lo que me influenció bastante así como el hecho de que desde joven siempre tuve una pasión por el derecho y un pensamiento idealista de lo debía ser la justicia en nuestra sociedad”.

Según contó Muñoz, fue mientras desarrollaba su carrera que sintió la necesidad de aprender el idioma inglés: “Y como mi hermana ya vivía en Estados Unidos, estaba muy familiarizada con los programas de la Universidad de Bellevue. Así que llegué a Omaha y comencé a prepararme tomando las clases de Inglés como Segundo Idioma, con el deseo de estudiar una maestría posteriormente”.

Sin embargo, los planes de Muñoz debieron modificarse ante los requerimientos académicos estadounidenses, por lo que el abogado optó por continuar su preparación cursando una Licenciatura en Administración de Negocios en dicha universidad.

“Tan pronto como me gradué en el 2008 surgió la oportunidad de trabajar aquí (Latino Center of the Midlands) enseñando una clase de computación”, comentó Muñoz agregando que “eso me gustó muchísimo y despertó en mi un interés muy sincero

Pensando en un sistema que se adaptara mejor a las expectativas de sus estudiantes, Muñoz diseñó clases especiales para familiarizarlos con el uso del internet y con programas como Word y Excel.

“Para entonces el Centro ya ofrecía clases para aprender inglés y español - enfatizó Muñoz -, lo que me generó la idea de establecer una especie de Clínica de Conversación donde los estudiantes de uno y otro idioma practicaban lo que aprendían.

Para mi era importante que quienes estudiaban español, también conocieran de primera mano mucho más sobre la cultura hispana, porque así podrían apoyar mucho mejor a la comunidad en aquello que necesitara”.

Como era de esperarse, la formación que Muñoz trajo consigo desde su patria, igualmente motivó su interés por brindar Clases de Ciudadanía en la misma agencia: “Estudié la división de poderes y todo lo que tuviera que ver con sistema legal de este país, para compartirlo con los estudiantes que requerían entender las diferencias entre el gobierno local y a nivel estatal y federal”.

A la par de sus tareas en el Latino Center of the Midlands, Muñoz adquirió gran experiencia en la enseñanza dictando clases de computación en el Kroc Center y como tutor de varias materias en la escuela South High: “Lo que me dejó muchas satisfacciones porque ayudé a estudiantes adolescentes, cuyos padres ya habían sido mis alumnos”.

coincido con la visión de la Directora Carolina Quezada en que el objetivo fundamental es cubrir la educación básica para adultos mediante las clases de alfabetización, pre-GED, GED (para obtener el Certificado de Secundaria), aunado a las clases de inglés, computación y ciudadanía”.

Una de las interesantes metas del departamento encabezado por Muñoz es la de: “Comparar y medir resultados con otras organizaciones, intercambiar datos y hasta referir a estudiantes a agencias similares, cuando llegamos al límite de nuestra capacidad.

Por lo mismo, organizamos nuestras clases de tal forma que podamos ofrecerlas en la mañana y por la tarde para que todos tengan acceso a ellas”.

Con un instructor de computación apoyando al Intercultural Senior Center, y otro dando Clases de GED en Completely Kids, Muñoz concluyó que el reto mayor será: “Animar a la población hispana del sur de Omaha a continuar su educación, que vean que sí lo pueden lograr y que sus esfuerzos van a impactar su vida y a cambiar su visión. Nosotros creemos que cuando inviertes en la educación, inviertes en tu comunidad, y una comunidad que se educa es una comunidad saludable que siempre sale adelante”, concluyó Muñoz.

A

t the end of last month, Carolina Quezada, Executive Director of the Latino Center of the Midlands, formally introduced Peruvian Raul Muñoz as the new Director for Adult Basic Education (ABE). Originally from Lima, Muñoz studied law and political science in his country, where he worked as an attorney for 7 years at what was then known as the Peruvian Institute of Social Security.

“My father and brother are both lawyers,” said Muñoz, “and that had a big influence on me, as well as the fact that I was always very passionate about law studies, with an idealistic notion of what justice should be like in our society.”

According to Muñoz, it was during his career that he felt a need to learn English as a second language: “And since my sister already lived in the United States, I was very familiar with the school programs of Bellevue University. So, when I arrived at Omaha I started taking classes for English as a second language, wanting to study for a master’s degree.”

However, the plans that Muñoz had would need to be modified because of U.S. academic requirements, which is why the lawyer decided to continue preparing himself by studying for a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management at the aforementioned university.

“As soon as I graduated in 2008, an opportunity to work here came up (Latino Center of the Midlands) for teaching a computer class,” said Muñoz, adding, “I liked that very much and it awakened my sincere interest in helping the Latino community, where there was a big need for learning.”

Thinking of a system that could be better adapted to the expectation of his students, Muñoz taught special classes to help people learn about the Internet and programs such as Word and Excel.

“By then the Center was already offering classes for learning English and Spanish,” emphasized Muñoz, “which generated an idea for setting up some sort of ‘Conversation Clinic’ where students from one of the other languages could practice what they had learned. For me, it was very important that those who were studying Spanish also knew more first-hand about Latino culture so that they could better help the community on whatever it needed.”

As was to be expected, the education and ethics that Munoz brought from his homeland motivated his interest for teaching citizenship classes at the same agency: “I studied the separation of powers and everything else about the legal system in this country, in order to share it with students who needed to understand the differences between local, state and federal governments.”

Along with his responsibilities at the Latino Center of the Midlands, Muñoz acquired a lot of experience by teaching computer classes at the Kroc Center, as well as by working as a tutor on several subjects at South High: “This made me very happy because I helped teenage students whose parents had already been my students.”

“I’m fascinated about teaching, and I’m very happy about it,” said Munoz, “and I share Director Carolina Quezada’s vision about how the main objective is to cover the basic education needs of

adults with literacy classes, pre-GED, GED, as well as English, computer and citizenship classes.”

One of the interesting goals of the department headed by Muñoz is “comparing and measuring results with other organizations, exchanging data and referring students to similar agencies, once we’ve reached capacity. Because of this, we organize our classes so that we can offer them in the morning and in the afternoon so that everyone can have access to them.”

With one teacher helping with the Intercultural Senior Center, and another one with GED classes at Completely Kids, Muñoz concluded by stating that the biggest challenge will be “encouraging the Latino population of South Omaha to continue with their education, for them to see that they can make it, and that their efforts will have an impact on their lives, changing their view on everything.

We believe that when you invest in education, you invest in the community, and a community that tries to be educated is a healthy community that always pulls through,” concluded Muñoz.

“There was never an attempt to restrict anyone from being able to title or license a vehicle,” wrote Douglas County Treasurer Chief Deputy Tim Cavanaugh in an email. Ben Salazar helped facilitate a meeting with the Mexican Consulate.

“We learned a great deal about the strict requirements needed to obtain a consular ID,” added Cavanaugh. “We are very comfortable accepting consular ID as a valid form of identification.”

Police Academy The Southeast precinct of the Omaha Police Department will be hosting its annual Citizen Police Academy. Area residents interested in touring with an Omaha Police officer, visiting the Southeast precinct and participating in interactive scenarios are encouraged to register.

Graffiti and gangs, domestic violence and child abuse are just some of the many topics that will be covered during the sessions. The sessions will take place on April 8, 15, 22 and 29 as well as May 6 and 13 at the Salvation Army KROC Center located at 2825 Y Street. Fremont Special Election Results The City of Fremont held a special election on February 11. Residents voted on the housing provisions of Ordinance 5165. A 60-40 vote will allow the housing provisions of Ordinance 5165 take effect sometime in March. Residents over the age of eighteen that wish to rent in the city of Fremont will have to obtain a permit from the local police department. Residents will be charged a fivedollar fee per permit each time they rent a new home. The drafters of the resolution initiated this legislation in hopes of discouraging immigrants from renting in Fremont.
