[Por Cheril Lee] remplazar la producción a base de carbón con opciones de energía eficiente, o cerrarla por completo”, comentó Jordison.

“No vale la pena discutir la instalación de tecnología para que la planta siga utilizando carbón. Existe una tecnología de un billón de dólares que mantendría fuera del ambiente a algunos de los contaminantes, como el mercurio y el dióxido de azufre. Sin embargo, eso no hace nada sobre el dióxido de carbono y no resuelve el problema de tener que excavar por el carbón o deshacerse del mismo. Las personas de Nebraska no quieren entrar en esa discusión”, aseguró Jordison. Él dijo que los habitantes de Nebraska son inteligentes y se han realizado muchos estudios en todo el Estado para mostrar que los habitantes de Nebraska entienden lo que es el cambio climático. Más del cincuenta por ciento entiende el cambio climático. Ellos entienden que los humanos están causándolo y que debemos hacer algo sobre ello. Jordison dijo que a muchos de los habitantes de Nebraska en verdad les agrada la idea de utilizar energía eólica.

Como Presidente de la Unión de Granjeros de Nebraska, John Hansen ha dicho: “No existe ningún reporte sobre daños por un derrame de energía eólica”.

Con base en la clasificación del Laboratorio Nacional Sobre Energía Renovable (National Renewable Energy Laboratory - NREL) sobre la capacidad eólica, Nebraska es el tercer Estado en la Nación en cuanto a recursos eólicos. Hansen dijo que el ranking del NREL se basa en modelos generados por dicha institución, mismos que son creados en base a datos reales tomados de los proyectos de energía eólica y de su nivel actual de generación de energía.

Así que el viento sopla a favor en Nebraska y los productores de energía eólica están listos para incrementar su producción.

“A principios del año pasado teníamos 459 megawatts por energía eólica y para finales del próximo año tendremos 1,207 megawatts”, dijo Hansen.

Iowa actualmente cuentan con 5,133 megawatts de producción por energía eólica, Wyoming tiene 1,410, Colorado tiene 2,301 y Dakota del Sur tiene 783. Nebraska todavía se encuentra un poco atrasado en cuanto a la producción de energía eólica pero Hansen dijo que estamos comenzando a alcanzar a los demás.

“El viento no consume nada de agua y no emite ningún tipo de carbón. También ayuda a brindar un desarrollo económico a nuestro Estado, además de beneficiar a las comunidades rurales. Hay pagos de arrendamiento a los propietarios de los terreros, además de un incremento a la base del impuesto local sobre propiedad. Existen muchas industrias y sectores que se benefician de la generación de energía eólica, así como de la actividad misma”, dijo Hansen.

Todo en la casa de Engle funciona con energía solar. Él dijo que usa energía pero también la renueva. Para Engle, tener energía solar ya ha rendido frutos. Él ha estado vendiendo energía al OPPD y rara vez tiene que pagar una cuenta eléctrica.

Al ser cada día más costeable utilizar energía solar y eólica, el Omaha Public Power District ha estado realizando grandes cambios para dejar de utilizar las fuentes de energía sucia que incrementan el costo en los recibos de electricidad, y amenazan el ambiente de Nebraska y de todo el mundo. Los grupos ambientales han tenido un rol importante y están demostrando la urgencia de la situación. Los propietarios de hogares están realizando grandes cambios.

El Sierra Club está presentando en la Campaña Más Allá del Carbón (Beyond Coal Campaign), con el objetivo de cerrar cierto número de plantas generadoras de energía a base del carbón para los años 2020 y 2030. Graham Jordison, Representante Asociado de la Organización, en periodo sabático con la campaña de Dave Domina, dijo que la campaña Más Allá del Carbón inició gracias a que el Sierra Club se percató de que si en verdad querían hacer frente al cambio climático mediante un esfuerzo serio, era necesario ir tras los más grandes contaminadores en la nación. La mayoría de estos contaminadores eran las plantas de energía eléctrica con base en el carbón.

“Fue donde nos dimos cuenta que de ahí provenía el 40 por ciento del dióxido de carbono en nuestro aire. Para poner de nuestra parte por el bienestar del país, nos percatamos que tendríamos que cerrar cierto número de plantas de energía con base en el carbón, para cambiarlas por energía limpia como la eólica o la solar”, explicó Jordison. Él dijo que muchos de los contaminantes creados por el uso del carbón contribuyen al cambio climático mundial, incluyendo al dióxido de azufre, el dióxido de carbono y las partículas de materia. Jordison dijo que existe evidencia científica que las personas que viven cerca de estos tipos de plantas tienen un mayor riesgo a desarrollar enfermedades como el asma debido a las partículas de materia que se dispersan en el aire mediante el uso del carbón para generar energía.

“Podemos avanzar rápidamente para establecer una fecha para retirar la planta de carbón en el norte de Omaha. No esperamos lograr cerrar la planta de la noche a la mañana, pero sí creemos que el OPPD puede comprometerse ahora a cerrarla en el 2015/2016”, dijo Jordison.

Existen cuatro opciones bajo la consideración del OPPD sobre la estación en el norte de Omaha. “Convertir la planta a una de gas natural, instalar tecnología para que la planta pueda seguir utilizando carbón,

“Hemos construido nuestros servicios de energía en base a varios combustibles, pero ahora el viento es un combustible viable que debemos utilizar, que generará beneficios y un valor a nuestros clientes, en cuanto a la diversidad y a contratos a largo plazo y de menor costo, distintos a los que tenemos ahora”, dijo Tim Burke, Vicepresidente de Servicio al Cliente y Asuntos Públicos para el Omaha Public Power District (OPPD).

El OPPD ha estado realizando una serie de reuniones abiertas en las que permiten que los interesados tengan oportunidad no solamente de escuchar la información que es compartida durante dichos eventos, sino también de ofrecer sus opiniones o realizar preguntas al OPPD. Burke dijo que el objetivo de estas reuniones abiertas es asegurar que las decisiones que tomen sean justas para todos los clientes. Él dijo que para finales del 2018, alrededor del 33 por ciento del portfolio del OPPD estará conformado por recursos renovables, la mayor parte de ellos por la energía eólica. Burke explicó que la mayoría de los Estados, aún en la costa oeste, pueden tener un estándar del 30 por ciento en energía renovable, pero no se espera que los mismos alcancen dicha meta sino hasta 2020-2025.

Y más energía eólica significa menos uso del carbón. El mes pasado, Burke dijo que el OPPD ha estado recibiendo muy buenos desempeños de las estaciones eólicas con las que cuentan hoy en día. Eso se ha traducido en algunas reducciones significativas en la producción de la instalación del OPPD en el norte de Omaha.

Burke dijo que como el viento no sopla todos los días, es considerado como una fuente intermitente de energía.

Eso quiere decir que la energía eólica jamás podrá remplazar por completo todas las actuales fuentes de energía.

“No puedes hacer que sople el viento pero puedes ayudar a programar la energía que obtienes del mismo para poder utilizarla de manera eficiente, pues podemos predecir de mejor manera cuándo soplará el viento”, explico Hansen. “Es más fácil predecir cuándo soplará el viento que predecir cuándo lloverá”.

Al realizar un desglose, Burke dijo que el viento es un componente importante para la generación de energía: “Una unidad de carga base usualmente es una unidad nuclear de carbón, o inclusive una de gas natural en algunas partes de los EE.UU. Si lo vemos en una imagen, la energía nuclear está en la base hasta abajo. Es una fuente que debe funcionar (es decir, que arranca, opera y funciona). Las fuentes intermitentes como el viento se encuentran por encima de ella. El gas natural se ubica hasta la parte más alta del gráfico y es utilizado únicamente en caso de que el OPPD necesite generar energía adicional para apoyar un incremento repentino en la carga de uso”.

Poder colocar una turbina de viento en el jardín es algo difícil para la mayoría de las personas, especialmente si no viven en un área rural. ¿Qué puede hacer usted para crear su propia energía en su hogar? La energía solar es una opción viable. Lo fue para Ken Engle. Engle cuenta con Paneles Solares en su casa que ordenó a través de United Electric Supply y para él ha sido una gran experiencia. Él nos comenta: “Me encanta mi sistema. Es una increíble manera de vivir y poder así reducir los costos de los recibos de electricidad”

Aunque la instalación del sistema no le tomó mucho tiempo, Engle dijo que es importante educarse a uno mismo y obtener la ayuda apropiada para evitar errores costosos y potencialmente peligrosos.

“Existen muchos aparatos eléctricos que se pueden conectar y que funcionarán, pero no es seguro y usted no debe hacerlo”, dijo Engle.

Los paneles solares no se limitan solamente a su uso en los techos. Usted puede colocarlos sobre la puerta del garaje o bien cubrir el patio trasero de su casa. Engle tiene uno en su patio trasero en un mecanismo que le permite moverlo hacia arriba o hacia abajo para obtener el mayor rendimiento posible de la luz del sol.

Y Nebraska es un gran lugar para probar la energía solar, gracias a un promedio de 4 ½ a 5 horas de luz solar máxima por día.

La clave para vender el excedente de energía a la compañía de servicios es un equipo llamado medidor neto. El medidor neto lleva un conteo de la energía que usted ha producido y también cuenta cuanta energía ha utilizado.

Si Engle produce más energía de la que utiliza, la compañía eléctrica le abona (a través de un convenio de compra).

Hansen dijo que las leyes estatales sobre medición neta definitivamente podrían ser mejoradas. “En Nebraska no nos encontramos cerca de donde deberíamos estar en cuanto a los pequeños productores de energía eólica y solar. La Unión de Granjeros de Nebraska luchó durante 15 años para lograr que los medidores netos pudieran entrar al Estado. No es lo que nos gustaría, pero es un comienzo”.

“Tomando en cuenta los retos que enfrentamos, desde el impacto humano hasta la liberación en la atmosfera de grandes cantidades de carbón, si podemos generar una cuarta o una tercera parte de la energía eléctrica a nivel nacional sin emitir carbón, esa sería una gran victoria para el medio ambiente y para toda la sociedad. Mejora la calidad del aire. La energía renovable no genera emisiones dañinas”, dijo Hansen.

Dijo que es importante que todas las personas se conviertan en defensores responsables de nuestro planeta.

Por su parte, Burke comento que el OPPD está comprando energía eólica para ayudar contra los precios en crecimiento de otros combustibles en

“That’s where we realized 40 percent of the carbon dioxide in our air was coming from. To do our part in the country, we realized we were going to have to shut down a certain number of coal plants and replace that with clean energy like wind and solar,” Jordison explained.

He said many of the pollutants created by coal generation contribute to global climate change, including sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide and particulate matter. And Jordison said there is scientific evidence that individuals living near these types of plants are more likely to develop conditions like asthma because of the particulate matter, that is dispersed into the air through coal generation.

“We can move in a fast direction toward coming up with a retirement date for the North Omaha coal plant. We don’t expect to shut the plant down overnight but we do think OPPD could commit now to projecting a shutdown in 2015/2016,” Jordison said.

There are four options being considered by OPPD regarding North Omaha Station. “Converting the plant to natural gas, installing technology so the plant can continue to burn coal, replacing the coal production with energy efficiency options or shutting it down,” said Jordison.

“It’s not worth discussing installing control technology to retrofit the plant. There is a billion dollar technology that would keep some of the

pollutants, like mercury and sulfur dioxide, out of the environment. But that doesn’t do anything about carbon dioxide and it doesn’t address the issue of mining coal or disposing of coal. The people of Nebraska don’t want to have that discussion,” asserted Jordison.

He said Nebraskans are intelligent and there have been lots of studies done across the state that show Nebraskans understand climate change.

More than 50 percent get climate change. They understand that humans are causing it and that we should do something about it. Jordison said a lot of Nebraskans really like the idea of using wind energy.

As President of the Nebraska Farmers Union John Hansen would say, “There are no documented wind spill damages.”

Based on the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) ranking of wind capacity, Nebraska is actually third in the nation in wind resources.

Hansen said the NREL’s rankings are based on their modeling which is shaped by actual data from wind projects and their actual generation.

So the wind is blowing steadily in Nebraska and wind farmers are ready to increase their production.

“At the start of last year, we had 459 megawatts of wind and by the end of next year, we will have 1207 megawatts,” said Hansen.

Everything runs off solar in Engle’s house. He said he pumps power out but also gets it back. For Engle, having solar energy has already paid dividends. He has been selling power back to OPPD and rarely gets a bill.

As solar and wind energy are increasingly affordable, the Omaha Public Power District has been making a major shift away from the dirty energy sources increasing the cost of electrical bills and threatening Nebraska and the world’s climate.

Environmental groups have played an important role and are turning up their urgency. Individual homeowners are making some big differences.

The Sierra Club is running a Beyond Coal Campaign with a goal of shutting down a certain number of coal plants by 2020 and 2030. Associate Organizing Representative Graham Jordison, on sabbatical with the Dave Domina campaign, said Beyond Coal started because the Sierra Club realized that if they really wanted to address climate changes on a serious level, they would have to go after the largest and biggest polluters in the country. Most of those polluters were coal fired power plants.

a nuclear or coal unit or even natural gas in some parts of the U.S. If you picture a chart, nuclear is on the bottom. It’s a must-run (meant to start, operate and run). Intermittent resources like wind are above that. Natural gas is on top and is used in the event OPPD needs additional generation to support an increased peak load.”

It’s tough for most people to fit a wind turbine in their yard, especially if they don’t live in a rural area. So what can you do if you want to create your own energy from your very own home?

Solar energy may be a viable option. It was for homeowner Ken Engle. Engle has Solar World Panels at his house that he ordered through United Electric Supply and he couldn’t be happier.

“I love my system. It’s a wonderful way to live and cut down on your electric bills,” he said.

Though it didn’t take him long to have the system installed, Engle said it’s important to educate yourself and get the appropriate help to avoid costly and potentially injurious mistakes.

“There are a lot of electrical things you can hook up and they will work. But it’s not safe and you shouldn’t have it working,” Engle said.

Not limited to rooftops, there are a variety of ways to take advantage of solar panels. You can do them over a carport or cover your back patio.

Engle has one in the backyard on an actuator so he can adjust the panels by moving them up or down to get full maximum usage of the sun.

And Nebraska is a great place to try solar with an average of 4 ½ to 5 hours of peak sun per day.

The key to selling power back to the utility company is a piece of equipment known as a net meter. The net meter keeps track of the energy that’s produced and also tracks how much is used. If Engle produces more than he uses, the power company (through a purchase power agreement) credits him back.

Hansen said the state net metering law could defi-

nitely be improved, “We are not near as robust as we should be in Nebraska with smaller wind and solar producers. The Nebraska Farmers Union fought to help get net metering in the state for 15 years before we finally got it done.

It’s not what we would like but it’s a start.”

“Given the challenges we are facing, from human impact that releases large amounts of additional carbon into the atmosphere, if we can generate a fourth or a third of our nation’s electrical generation by not emitting any carbon, then that’s a huge win for the environment and for society as a whole. It improves air quality. Renewable energy has no harmful emissions,” Hansen said.

He said it’s important that all people become responsible stewards of our earth. For their part, Burke said OPPD is purchasing wind energy to help hedge against rising prices of other generating fuels, such as natural gas and coal.

OPPD will continue to offer open meetings for stakeholders to allow people to engage with the utility on a number of different items, including renewable energy in the state and the future of the North Omaha coal plant.

“You will continue to see us out in the public gathering that information and feedback from our customer owners. We are really trying to put the ‘public’ back into public power,” said Burke.

Iowa currently has 5133 megawatts of wind, Wyoming has 1410, Colorado has 2301 and South Dakota has 783. Nebraska is still a bit behind in terms of wind production but Hansen said we are starting to catch up.

“Wind doesn’t consume any water and it doesn’t emit any carbon. It also helps provide domestic economic development in our state and benefits to rural communities. There are lease payments to landowners and increases to the local property tax base. There are a whole host of industries and sectors that benefit from wind generation and activity,” said Hansen.

“We have built our utility on a diversity of fuels and now that wind is a viable fuel for us to use, it will create benefits and value for our customer owners in that diversity, and in those longer-term low cost contracts that we have in place,” said Tim Burke, Vice President of Customer Service and Public Affairs for Omaha Public Power District (OPPD).

OPPD has been holding a series of open meetings where they provide stakeholders the opportunity not only listen to the information shared at the meetings but also to offer their thoughts or ask questions of OPPD. Burke said the objective of the open meetings is to make sure that all decisions they make are equitable for all customers.

He said by the end of 2018, around 33 percent of OPPD’s portfolio will be made up of renewable sources, with most of that coming from wind. Burke explained most states, even on the west coast, may have a 30 percent renewable energy standard but aren’t expected to reach that goal until 2020-2025.

And more wind equals less coal generation.

As recently as last month, Burke said OPPD has been getting some pretty good performance out of the wind farms they have today. That has meant some significant reductions in OPPD’s North Omaha facility production.

Burke said because the wind doesn’t blow every day, it’s considered an intermittent source of energy. That means wind energy will never be able to fully replace all current power sources.

“You can’t make the wind blow but you can help schedule the power from it and use it efficiently because we are increasingly able to predict when the wind is going to blow,” explained Hansen. “It’s actually easier to predict wind blowing than when it’s going to rain.”

i vida es bailar, no puedo pensar en hacer otra cosa que no sea enseñar a bailar y compartir mi pasión por la música y el baile con los demás”, expresó el carismático coreógrafo y DJ Blandon Joiner, el popular Salserodalante.

Es domingo por la noche en House of Loom, y mientras un numeroso grupo de hombres y mujeres de diferentes edades escuchan atentamente las instrucciones de Jeffrey el ágil instructor, Joiner amablemente accedió a charlar con El Perico: “Lo que ofrecemos aquí es una oportunidad única porque las clases son gratis y enseñamos la técnica del baile con los pasos básicos”.

Joiner es ampliamente conocido en los círculos de baile y toda una eminencia en lo que se refiere al conocimiento y manejo de los diferentes ritmos latinos: “Mi historia es muy sencilla, nací en Ohio pero mi padre es originario de Panamá y quizás por eso yo nací bailando. Cuando estaba joven ingresé a la Marina de los Estados Unidos y serví a este país durante varios años. Tuve la oportunidad de estar en El Chorrillo en Panamá y ahí pasaba algo muy especial, porque la gente vendía comida y bebidas en las calles durante la madrugada, y para que pudieras localizarlos fácilmente siempre tenían algún aparato tocando salsa a todo volúmen, así que cada noche yo escuchaba las mejores canciones. Luego viví en España, y por la ubicación de la base militar estuve en el Puerto de Santa María y tuve la oportunidad de tener un local para bailar salsa en Rota. Esa experiencia fue fantástica, la salsa en España es muy popular y tiene muchísimos seguidores”.

regresó a Estados Unidos dejando todo atrás: “Mi madre falleció y para mi fue una época muy difícil pero decidí establecerme en Omaha, sin embargo extrañaba mucho la salsa, aquí no había espacios donde se tocara ésa música, sólo estaba Arthur’s un club en la calle Dodge y otro más en Carter Lake, así que me animé a impulsar la salsa lo más posible”.

No sólo en las pistas mostrando sus pasos más elegantes, sino también detrás de los tornamesas, Joiner creó todo un movimiento social y musical: “Me encanta la música de Héctor Lavoe y pude promoverla en esta zona al igual que a artistas como Johnny Pacheco. Es cierto que a partir de los noventas la música cambió, pero yo soy un fan de lo antiguo, la música de los años sesentas y setentas es increíble porque los mismos artistas que cantaban la canción, eran quienes tocaban los instrumentos. Yo sigo tocando a gente como Gilberto Santa Rosa, Tito Rojas y El Canario (José Alberto), porque para mi la música es lo principal, ya que para poder bailar tengo que sentir la canción”.

Además de introducir este género musical entre la comunidad anglosajona, Joiner siguió perfeccionando sus dotes como bailarín: “Considero que California tiene a la gente más profesional, los bailarines mexicanos son estupendos, así que cada año voy a congresos y tomo talleres para perfeccionar mi estilo que es el LA-Style con artistas geniales como los Hermanos Vázquez (Francisco, Luis y Johnny, de Guadalajara)”.

Dejando huella en todos los escenarios que pisa, Joiner ha pasado por noches de salsa en El Museo Latino y en el restaurante España: “Ahí es donde Brent Crampton creó el concepto de Loom y cuando abrió su propio local en el downtown me invitó a participar con él. Yo estoy feliz porque además de

convivir sanamente estamos compartiendo nuestra cultura”.

El Salserodalante explicó: “También me conocen por el Shark Club y antes estuve en Elite y posiblemente vaya al nuevo espacio que tienen sus propietarios llamado Rehab. Sinceramente yo amo estar rodeando de personas, amo la música y amo enseñar lo que sé, aunque hay quienes sólo están interesados en traer clientela para que consuma en la barra, ésa no es mi idea, esta gran comunidad es mi familia, y lo maravilloso del baile es que puedes venir con el deseo de aprender a bailar salsa, y cuando estás en la pista bailando, olvidarte de tus problemas. Aquí puedes traer alguna pena profunda, un dolor, un llanto, pero en cuanto llegas, escuchas la música y comienzas a bailar, comienzas a recuperarte y tienes la energía para seguir adelante, para volver a reír y amar”.

Hablando de amor, durante su fructífera carrera Joiner ha visto a quienes se enamoran mediante el baile: “Y en verdad llegan a formar hermosas parejas, pero aclaro que en este grupo todos somos muy respetuosos, una dama puede llegar tranquilamente y cuando alguien la saca a bailar ella va a poder disfrutar de una canción que puede durar unos 4 minutos, tiempo durante el cual su compañero de baile la tratará como a una reina pero sin buscar nada más.

Aquí puedes llegar sin pareja y tener la confianza de que lo vas a pasar muy bien, aunque no hables español, porque aquí todos hablamos el mismo lenguaje, ¡el idioma de la salsa es universal y representa la unificación mundial!”.

ancing is my life, and I can’t think about doing anything different from teaching others how to dance, sharing my passion for music and dancing,” said Blandon Joiner, charismatic choreographer and DJ, known as the Salserodalante.

It’s Sunday night at House of Loom, and as a large group of men and women of all ages attentively listens to the instructions from Jeffrey and Blandon, Joiner kindly agreed to talk with El Perico: “What we offer here is a unique opportunity because our classes are free and we help people learn a proper dance technique by working on the basic steps.”

Joiner is well-known in dance circles as well as being a prominent figure due to his knowledge and performance of a diverse range of Latino rhythms: “My story is very simple. I was born in Ohio to a Panamanian father, and that could be why I was born dancing. When I was young, I joined the US Navy and served this country for many years. I had a chance to be at El Chorrillo in Panama, this very unique place where people were selling food and beverage out on the streets in the wee hours, and in order for us to easily locate them, they always had some type of equipment blasting salsa at full volume.

This allowed me to listen to the best songs every single night. I then lived in Spain, and because of the location of the military base I was at Santa Maria Harbor and I had a chance to have a place to dance salsa at Rota. This was a great experience since salsa has many followers in Spain and is very popular.”

Unfortunately, in 2002 Joiner’s mother was very ill, and the outstanding dancer had to immediately return to the United States, leaving it all behind: “My mother died, and that signaled the start of a very hard phase for me, but I decided to settle in

Omaha. I missed salsa, and there weren’t many places where that music was played here other than Arthur’s, a club over at Dodge St. and at another one at Carter Lake.Therefore, I decided to promote salsa as much as possible.”

Dancing isn’t Joiner’s only passion since we can also see him hard at work behind the turntables, an activity that allowed him to create an interesting social and musical movement: “I love Hector Lavoe’s music, and I was able to promote his songs in the area, along with the work of artists such as Johnny Pacheco. It’s true that music changed from the 90’s and on, but I’m a fan of the older stuff. The music from the 60’s and the 70’s is truly amazing because the same artists that were singing a song where also the ones playing the instruments. I continue to play the music from Gilberto Santa Rosa, Tito Rojas and El Canario (Jose Alberto) because to me, music is everything since in order for me to want to dance a song, I need to feel it.”

While working on introducing this musical genre to the english-speaking community, Joiner continued to perfect his skill as a dancer: “I believe that California has the most professional individuals out there, and Mexican dancers are amazing, which is why every year I go to conventions and participate in workshops to perfect my style, the LA-Style showcased by spectacular artists such as the Vazquez Brothers (Francisco, Luis and Johnny from Guadalajara).”

Leaving his mark in every stage where he performs, Joiner has been part of salsa nights at El Museo Latino and at the España restaurant: “That’s where Brent Crampton created the concept of Loom, and when he opened his own place downtown he invited me to participate. I’m happy because we get to share our culture.”

The Salserodalante explained: “I’m also known because of Shark Club, and before that I was at Elite and I might go over to Rehab, the new place from the same owners. I honestly love being surrounded by people, I love music and I love to teach what I know. Even though there are people who only want to bring more clients into an establishment so that they end up buying some drinks, that’s not what I want to do. This community is my family, and the wonderful thing about dancing is that people can come here wanting to learn how to dance salsa, and once they’re on the dance floor they can leave their troubles behind. You can be in deep sorrow, with something that is hurting you on the inside, crying your heart out, and as soon as you’re here, you listen to the music and start to dance. You begin to recover, regaining the strength to continue, to laugh and love again.”

Speaking of love, during his fruitful career Joiner has seen how people fall in love because of dance: “And they really make great couples. I do have to be clear about how in this group we’re all very respectful, and a lady can join us without any worries.

When someone asks her to dance she’ll be able to enjoy a nice song that might last around four minutes, and during that time her dance partner will treat her as a queen, without any hidden intentions. Anyone can join us by themselves knowing they will have a great time even if they don’t speak Spanish, because here we all speak the same language: the language of salsa is universal and it represents the world coming together as one!”
