MES NACIONAL DE LA HERENCIA HISPANA

“

El Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana celebra y reconoce las contribuciones de los estadounidenses latinos, a la sociedad y cultura de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica y busca honrar a cinco de nuestros vecinos de Centroamérica (El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua) que celebran su independencia durante el mes de septiembre”, nos dice la Biblioteca del Congreso.

El primer Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana se celebró en 1968 durante los días 15 y 16 de septiembre.

Este año, la sucursal Willa Cather de la Biblioteca Pública de Omaha conmemorará el mes con un evento especial el 19 de septiembre de 11:00 a.m. a 12:30 p.m.

Lori Pitman, Bibliotecaria de Servicios Juveniles, dijo que esta es la primera vez que la sucursal Willa Cather celebrará el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana. Ella comentó que la idea sobre el programa vino de una de sus compañeras de trabajo en la biblioteca que es latina. Pitman pensó que era una buena idea y decidió llevar a cabo el evento.

Rosemary Salcedo comentó a Pitman que ella quería tener una celebración en su sucursal, en la que el personal pudiera leer historias para niños tanto en inglés como en español, además de que las historias compartidas en inglés pudieren ser traducidas al español para los niños.

El programa es perfecto para las familias y los niños, desde kínder hasta la pre-adolescencia. Además de las historias, el personal de la biblioteca ayudará a los niños a crear algunas manualidades durante este evento.

Pitman dijo que las festividades terminarán con una piñata que todos los niños tratarán de romper.

Los libros para los niños pequeños incluyen: Abuela, Borreguita & the Coyote y Family Pictures. Los niños más grandes podrán escuchar: Spoon for Every Bite, Moon Rope, Piñata, Colores de la Vida y Martina and the Beautiful Cockroach.

El personal de la biblioteca leerá las historias una tras otra, por lo que cada libro será presentado una vez.

Pitman explicó que la biblioteca comenzó a escoger temáticas mensuales hace un par de años, siendo para septiembre el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana.

“Para ayudar a los bibliotecarios a que sean consistentes al compartir esta información, el personal creó kits para cuando sea momento de contar un cuento, lo cual incluye ideas para manualidades y libros”, nos dijo.

Su kit para el 19 de septiembre incluye un proyecto de hojalata mexicana.

Farflungarts.com explica que el trabajo en hojalata “se remonta al siglo XVI. Los artistas utilizan pinturas naturales, oxidadas y brillantes para crear adornos, espejos, linternas y otras piezas decorativas”.

Pitman dijo que es importante ofrecer en la biblioteca programación con temática en español pues cada día hay más inmigrantes que vienen a Omaha y que viven aquí. Ella también comentó que si existe suficiente interés sobre las celebraciones de este año, entonces la biblioteca definitivamente realizará el próximo año otro programa por el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana.

Nos comentó que eventos como este son una gran manera de mostrar, en general, lo que la biblioteca tiene por ofrecer.

“Tenemos una de las más grandes colecciones de libros escritos en español - solamente nos supera la sucursal del Sur de

Omaha. Y estos libros no son muy usados.

Tradicionalmente, vemos más a los niños que a los padres, y los niños necesariamente no sacan los libros de la biblioteca”, nos compartió.

Algo que a Pitman le encantaría ver es que más padres sacaran los libros de la biblioteca para compartir las historias con sus niños.

“Hay una buena colección de películas y libros latinos, tanto para niños como para adultos y todo es gratis. Revisar estos materiales en la biblioteca es una gran manera de aprender algo nuevo o de poder entretenerse. No cuesta nada ser parte de los programas que tenemos y tampoco tiene costo obtener una tarjeta para la biblioteca”, dijo Pitman.

El evento del Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana está abierto a todos y no es necesario registrarse. Si les interesa asistir, Pitman dijo que todo lo que tienen que hacer es llegar al evento.

“

National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates and recognizes the contributions Hispanic Americans have made to American society and culture and is meant to honor five of our Central American neighbors (El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua) who celebrate their independence in September,” according to the Library of Congress.

The first National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration was held in 1968 on September 15th and 16th.

This year, the Willa Cather branch of the Omaha Public Library will commemorate the month with a special event on September 19th from 11-12:30.

Lori Pitman, Youth Services Librarian, said this is the first time the Willa Cather branch will celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. She said the idea for the program came from one of Pitman’s coworkers at the library who is Hispanic. Pitman thought it was a good one and decided to move ahead with the event.

Rosemary Salcedo told Pitman she wanted to have a celebration at their branch where the staff would be able to read kids stories in both Spanish and English. And where the stories that are shared in English would also be translated into Spanish for the kids.

The program is perfect for families and kids in kindergarten through tween age. In addition to stories, the library staff will also lead kids in creating some crafts during the event. And Pitman said the festivities will end with a piñata that kids will get together to break open.

Books for the younger kids include: Abuela, Borreguita & the Coyote and Family Pictures. The older kids will get to hear: Spoon for Every Bite, Moon Rope, Pinata, Colores de la Vida and Martina and the Beautiful Cockroach.

“To help the librarians be consistent when sharing this information, staff put together story time kits that include craft ideas and storybooks,” she said.

Her story time kit for September 19th includes a Mexican Tin Art Project.

Farflungarts.com explained tin work, also known as hojolata, “goes back to the 16th Century. Artists use natural, oxidized and brightly lacquered paints to create ornaments, mirrors, lanterns and other decorative pieces.”

Pitman said it is important to offer Spanish-themed programming at the library because there are more and more immigrants coming to and living in Omaha. She also said the library would definitely put on another program for National Hispanic Heritage Month next year if there is enough interest in this year’s festivities.

She said events like this are a great way to showcase what the library has to offer in general.

“We have one of the bigger collections of books written in Spanish. We are second only to the South Omaha branch of the library. And these books are not heavily used. Traditionally, we see the kids more than we see the parents and the kids don’t necessarily check out the books,” she said.

One thing Pitman would love to see is more parents checking out these books to share the stories with their children.

“There is a good collection of Hispanic movies and books for both kids and adults and everything is free. Checking out items from the library is a great way to learn something new or just entertain yourself.

It doesn’t cost anything to attend programs here or to get a library card,” Pitman said.

The National Hispanic Heritage Month event is open to everyone and there is no need to register. If you are interested in attending, Pitman said all you have to do is show up.

E

l Representante Marc Veasey, D-Texas, está lanzando un llamamiento para que más residentes permanentes legales en su estado den el paso para hacerse ciudadanos americanos.

No sólo tendrán el derecho al voto, a la petición de miembros de su familia, y a las protecciones gubernamentales cuando viajen al extranjero, sino que también serán elegibles para solicitar trabajos federales bien remunerados, que están ahora en auge en Texas.

“Hay más de 100,000 puestos en el Departamento de Defensa que ofrecen sueldos de seis cifras en Texas. Necesitamos ciudadanos recién naturalizados para llenar estos puestos”, le dijo Veasey a un grupo de periodistas en una mesa redonda organizada por New America Media, en colaboración con la New Americans Campaign, un esfuerzo nacional para hacer que la naturalización sea más accesible.

En años recientes, dicen analistas comerciales, Dallas/Fort Worth, apodado la Pradera Silicon, ha estado entre las 10 primeras ciudades de los Estados Unidos para trabajos de defensa y puestos de tecnología informática, para profesionales autorizados por el Departamento de Seguridad. La mayor parte de este empleo requiere profesionales cualificados que hablen idiomas aparte del inglés.

Y como son puestos federales, sólo los ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos los pueden solicitar.

Ahora, con la reforma de inmigración estancada en el Congreso, añadió Veasey, la única manera “de tener un impacto profundo en las políticas” es que los residentes permanentes legales se naturalicen y elijan a los líderes que representarán a sus comunidades.

“Si eres un ciudadano americano”, dijo, “puedes hacer que tu gobernador o alcalde escuche tus necesidades”.

Hassan Al Zuheiri, un ciudadano americano recién naturalizado, está de acuerdo.

Después de llegar a los Estados Unidos como refugiado iraquí en 2008, y tras recibir su permiso de residencia permanente dos años más tarde, Al Zuheiri trabajó duro para integrarse en la sociedad americana. Pero dijo que algo le seguía faltando.

“Ya era residente permanente legal, pero siempre me sentía inestable y nunca me sentía totalmente protegido”, dijo Al Zuheiri. “Ahora que soy un ciudadano americano, me siento bendecido”.

Enrique Polavieja, especialista de inmigración en el Comité de Rescate Internacional, agregó que los inmigrantes muchas veces encuentran que sus vidas se vuelven más seguras y sus ingresos aumentan cuando se hacen ciudadanos americanos.

“Vivimos aquí, trabajamos aquí y tenemos familias aquí, así que necesitamos protegerlas a ellas y a nosotros mismos haciéndonos ciudadanos americanos”, dijo Polavieja.

La Campaña de Nuevos Americanos ha visto un impacto positivo a nivel nacional, con unos 170,000 inmigrantes naturalizándose desde 2011, y alrededor de $150 millones ahorrados en cuotas legales y de solicitud que de otra manera hubieran gastado.

En Dallas, donde la población inmigrante ha crecido dramáticamente, los números son importantes. Hay 930,000 personas elegibles para solicitar la ciudadanía en Texas, casi una cuarta parte de ellos son del área de Dallas/Fort Worth.

Sin embargo, a nivel nacional, sólo alrededor del 8 por ciento de los inmigrantes elegibles dan el paso para hacerse ciudadanos cada año.

Por eso los líderes de la comunidad, oficiales del gobierno y defensores están presionando fuerte a la ciudadanía, intentando encontrar maneras de aumentar el número de

solicitudes y hacer que el proceso de naturalización sea más fácil.

“Por eso queremos que todos ustedes se involucren”, dijo Luis Arango, director del programa de ciudadanía en Catholic Charities de Dallas. Animó a los medios étnicos a informar a las comunidades inmigrantes a las que sirven de los servicios legales gratis y talleres de ciudadanía que se proporcionan cada mes en Dallas.

Catholic Charities de Dallas, Proyecto Inmigrante y el Comité de Rescate Internacional, organizan los talleres gratis como parte de la Campaña de Nuevos Americanos, una de las maneras en que ayudan a los residentes permanentes legales de aquí a que les sea más fácil naturalizarse.

En septiembre, dijo Arango, Dallas volverá a estar en el foco cuando vengan más de 150 representantes de organizaciones de todo el país a hablar de los siguientes pasos para ayudar a más inmigrantes a hacerse ciudadanos americanos. El congreso nacional culmina con un taller gratis en Dallas, el 12 de septiembre, para ayudar a los inmigrantes elegibles con el proceso de naturalización.

PLACA CONMEMORATORIA POR LOS 150 AÑOS DE NEBRASKA El Gobernador Pete Rickets y la Primera Dama Susanne Shore develaron el diseño de la placa conmemorativa por los 150 años de Nebraska, el 3 de septiembre.

La placa especial diseñada por la Comisión Sesquicentenario de Nebraska incorpora el logo y la marca develada en Julio por el 150 aniversario de Nebraska, el cual será celebrado en el 2017.

La inspiración creativa para el diseño de el logo y la marca fue dibujada del Capitolio del Estado de Nebraska y otras imágenes simbólicas incluyendo la flor del estado, la bandera y naturaleza.

El logo y la marca fueron diseñados con la asistencia de Bailey Lauerman, una agencia de publicidad y mercadotecnia con base en Nebraska.

El gobernador y la primera dama también anunciaron que se informará en el futuro sobre mas actividades sobre la celebración.

CONDADO DE DOUGLAS REPORTA PRIMER CASO DE ENTEROVIRUS D68 El Departamento de Salud del Condado de Douglas recibió el primer caso de laboratorio confirmado de enterovirus D68 de un residente del condado de Douglas, el 19 de septiembre. El paciente era un niño menor de un año quien fue hospitalizado con toz y dificultad para respirar, y quien ya fue dado de alta.

Los síntomas típicamente incluyen toz, estornudos, poca fiebre, nariz mocosa, y posible dolor de cuerpo. EV-D68 parece afectar mas seriamente a los niños con asma o con condiciones respiratorias pre-existentes.

El Plan para combatir el EV-D68 debe incluir: Limpieza – lavarse las manos frecuentemente con agua y con jabón, usar desinfectante con base de alcohol cuando no se pueda lavar las manos. Mantener las superficies limpias. Cubrir – Cubrirse la boca cuando toza con la manga o con un pañuelo desechable. Contener – Quedarse en casa si se enferma para evitar contagiar a otros.

Si tiene un plan de acción de asma, sígalo y asegúrese que su escuela tenga una copia.

AS FED JOBS ABOUND, A CONGRESSMAN PUSHES FOR NATURALIZATION By: Anthony Advincula, New America Media

Hassan Al Zuheiri, a newly naturalized U.S. citizen, agrees.

After arriving in the United States as an Iraqi refugee in 2008, and getting his green card two years later, Al Zuheiri worked hard to integrate himself into American society.

But he said something was still missing.

“I was already a legal permanent resident, but I always felt unstable and I never felt fully protected,” Al Zuheiri said. “Now that I am a U.S. citizen, I just feel blessed.”

Enrique Polavieja, immigration specialist at the International Rescue Committee, added that immigrants often find that their lives get more secure and their incomes increase when they become American citizens.

“We live here, we work here and we have families here — so we need to protect them and ourselves by becoming U.S. citizens,” said Polavieja.

The New Americans Campaign has seen a positive impact nationally — with about 170,000 immigrants having become naturalized since 2011, and about $150 million saved in legal and applications fees they otherwise would have spent.

In Dallas, where the immigrant population has grown dramatically, the numbers are critical. There are 930,000 people who are eligible to apply for citizenship in Texas, about a quarter of them from the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Yet nationally, only about 8 percent of eligible immigrants take the step to become citizens each year.

That’s why community leaders, government officials and advocates here are pushing harder for citizenship, trying to find ways

Not only will they will have the right to vote, petition their family members, and get government protections when they travel abroad; they will also be eligible to apply for high-paying federal jobs, which are now booming in Texas.

“There are more than 100,000 defense jobs that offer six-figure salaries in Texas. We need newly naturalized citizens to fill these jobs,” Veasey told a group of reporters Tuesday at a roundtable organized by New America Media in collaboration with the New Americans Campaign, a national effort to make citizenship more accessible.

In recent years, business analysts say, Dallas/Fort Worth — dubbed the Silicon Prairie — has been listed among the top 10 U.S. cities for defense jobs and IT positions for security-cleared professionals. Much of this employment requires skilled professionals who speak languages other than English.

And because they are federal jobs, only U.S. citizens can apply.

Now, with immigration reform stalled in Congress, Veasey added, the only way “to have a profound impact on policy” is for legal permanent residents to naturalize and elect the leaders who represent their communities.

“If you are a U.S. citizen,” he said, “you can make your governor or mayor listen to your needs.”

“This is why we want you all to get involved,” said Luis Arango, citizenship program manager at Catholic Charities of Dallas. He urged the ethnic media to inform the immigrant communities they serve about the free legal services and citizenship workshops that are provided every month in Dallas.

Catholic Charities of Dallas, Proyecto Inmigrante and International Rescue Committee organize the free workshops as part of the New Americans Campaign, one of the ways they are helping to make it easier for green card holders here to naturalize. They also help address some of the barriers immigrants face in applying for citizenship, from providing English-language and civics classes to helping low-income applicants access fee waivers so they don’t have to pay the $680 application cost.

The White House has also stepped up, launching its own national campaign that aims to remove barriers that immigrants face during the naturalization process.

In September, Arango said, Dallas will be back in the spotlight as more than 150 representatives from organizations across the country will be in town to discuss the next steps in helping more immigrants become U.S. citizens. The national conference culminates in a free workshop in Dallas on September 12, to help eligible immigrants through the naturalization process.

AFFORDABLE CARE ACT FUNDING DESIGNATED TO HEALTH CARE CENTERS One World Community Health Centers received $245,746 in funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) based on reaching and exceeding national performance standards for high quality, integration and use of electronic health record reporting, increasing access to care to a large number of patients and being cost effective.

The funding is part of $63.3 million in grant awards designated to health centers across the nation for the expansion of quality improvement systems, infrastructure and primary care services through the Affordable Care Act. Long known for providing quality affordable health care; individuals are welcome with or without insurance, including Kids Connection, Medicaid and Medicare. One World cared for 32,497 patients in 2014 with 84% living at or below 200% of poverty.

One World operates ten clinical locations in the metropolitan Omaha area, including the three building campus at the Historic Livestock Exchange Building in South Omaha, Cass Family Medicine in Plattsmouth, a clinic in West Omaha, Northwest Omaha, four school-based health centers at Indian Hill Elementary, Spring Lake Elementary, Liberty Elementary and Bryan High schools, a clinic within Community Alliance and a mobile dental clinic.

The Center was rated a national health care quality leader among 1300 health centers in 2014, and is accredited by the Joint Commission, certified

DOUGLAS COUNTY HAS FIRST ENTEROVIRUS D68 CASE The Douglas County Health Department received the first laboratory confirmed case of enterovirus D68 in a Douglas County resident, on Sep. 19. The patient was a child less than a year old who was hospitalized with coughing and difficulty breathing, and has been released.

Symptoms typically include cough, sneezing, a low-grade fever, runny nose and possible body ache. EV-D68 appears to more seriously affect children with asthma or pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Your plan to combat EV-D68 should include the Three Cs: Clean - Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use alcohol-based sanitizer when hand washing is not an option. Keep frequently touched surfaces clean. Cover- Cover your cough using your sleeve or a tissue. Contain - Stay home if you are sick to avoid spreading this or any other illness.

If you have an asthma action plan, follow it and make sure your school has a copy.

SESQUICENTENNIAL NE LICENSE PLATE DESIGN Governor Pete Ricketts and First Lady Susanne Shore revealed the design for the Nebraska Sesquicentennial Commission’s special issue license plate, on Sep. 3.

The design for the Nebraska Sesquicentennial Commission’s special issue license plate incorporates the logo and branding unveiled in July for Nebraska’s sesquicentennial anniversary, which will be celebrated in 2017. Creative inspiration for the design of the logo and branding was drawn from the Nebraska State Capitol and other iconic Nebraska images including the state flower, flag, and nature.

The logo and brand were developed with the assistance of Bailey Lauerman, a Nebraska-based marketing and advertising agency.

The Governor and First Lady also said that additional announcements about celebration activities would be made in the future.
