ENSEÑANZAS BRASILEÑAS SON DESTACADAS EN CONFERENCIA DE LA UNIVERSIDAD DE NEBRASKA-OMAHA [Por Bill Grennan]

l Dr. Doug Patterson, profesor de la Universidad de Nebraska-Omaha (UNO), está trabajando arduamente en organizar la Vigésima Conferencia de Pedagogía y Teatro de los Oprimidos (Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed - PTO), la cual se llevará a cabo del 26 al 29 de junio en la UNO. Durante las últimas dos décadas, el Dr. Patterson y varias personas han promocionado las Conferencias PTO como un medio para apoyar a las personas cuyo trabajo les enfrenta a los sistemas opresivos. Logran esto al promover la pedagogía (mejor conocido como el pensamiento crítico) y la justicia social gracias al teatro y a la educación popular. Patterson dijo que el evento nació gracias a una serie de conferencias realizadas durante los años 90 en base a las enseñanzas de los brasileños Augusto Boal y Paulo Freire. Boal era partidario de las políticas y el arte de Brasil, por lo que desarrolló un sistema conocido como el Teatro de los Oprimidos (Theatre of the Oppressed). Por su parte, Freire es conocido por su trabajo en Pedagogía de los Oprimidos (Pedagogy of the Oppressed), un libro que sentó las bases para fortalecer a las personas oprimidas alrededor del mundo en cuanto a educación y políticas. “Básicamente, él decía que los humanos dan lo mejor de ellos mismos cuando entran en un diálogo”, dijo Patterson. “No solamente con palabras sino con sonidos y gestos. Así es como somos creados como seres humanos. Durante las primeras etapas de nuestra vida, entablamos

diálogos con nuestros padres, hermanos, familia extendida, etc.”. “Después de un par de años, nos damos cuenta de que en muchas ocasiones no existe un diálogo, sino un monólogo. Mamá dice ‘No pongas la mano sobre la estufa caliente’, y a nosotros no nos gusta eso. No nos gustan los monólogos pues ya contamos con un par de valiosos años de interacción con los adultos. Pero esos monólogos son importantes. Claramente, cuando somos jóvenes, son muy importantes”. El problema, nos dice Patterson, es cuando esos monólogos comienzan a surgir desde puestos de poder alrededor del mundo. Estos monólogos son muestras unilaterales de supremacía en las que aquellos individuos en el poder son los que hablan, mientras que los que no lo pueden hacer (los oprimidos) no son escuchados. Existen con problemas en cuanto a color, raza, patrimonio, privilegios, pobreza, género, orientación sexual, educación, idioma y más. “Y en cuanto a la educación, probablemente el salón de clases es el foro equivocado para que estas personas sean sermoneados. Es solamente otro monólogo. Les dicen cómo es el mundo pues eso es lo que experimentan todo el tiempo las personas oprimidas - un mundo repleto de monólogos”, dijo Patterson Esto es lo que la PTO busca remediar mediante el uso de técnicas y métodos desarrollados por Boal y Freire. “Freire dijo ‘Enseñémonos los unos a los otros’. Conozcamos lo que sabemos, para en ese proceso comenzar a dialogar. Realicemos preguntas sobre el texto y el material que tenemos frente a nosotros. Es por ello que nos

referimos a la pedagogía o al pensamiento crítico”, dijo Patterson. Una vez que entablan un diálogo, las personas oprimidas pueden comenzar a aprender y a realizar preguntas sobre el mundo que les rodea, así como sobre la razón por la que existe una dinámica de opresión. “Así, los oprimidos comienzan a entender la importancia no solamente del diálogo, sino también del pensamiento crítico. Esto permite que cuando salgan del salón de clases, puedan comenzar a realizar preguntas acerca de sus circunstancias. Esas son las preguntas que de verdad son importantes para los oprimidos”. Artísticamente, durante mucho tiempo la forma del teatro ha sido el monólogo. Utiliza todas sus herramientas y técnicas para convencer a una audiencia sobre una realidad que no está ahí. Augusto Boal pensó que este tipo de teatro no era ideal para los pueblos oprimidos. “Él dijo que lo que necesitamos hacer es tener un teatro interrogativo”, dijo Patterson. “Un teatro que presente algo y después realice preguntas sobre ello, para después pedir al público que lo cambie”. La idea en si se reduce a tres acciones que PTO intenta compartir.

La próxima Conferencia PTO permitirá a los habitantes del área aprender de e interactuar con algunos de los más grandes profesionales de la Pedagogía y Teatro de los Oprimidos. La conferencia consistirá en presentaciones y talleres diseñados para fortalecer a las personas al brindarles los medios para poder entablar un diálogo

con la esperanza de estimular el cambio en nuestras comunidades. “Una de las cosas más importantes por entender es que nadie necesita tener experiencia con el teatro para poder realizar este trabajo, o contar con experiencia en la teoría de la educación formal”, comentó Patterson. “La misma está profundamente basada en la comunidad. Lo que estamos tratando de hacer es borrar las barreras entre el proceso educacional y al comunidad. Estamos invitando a todos a que se involucren”. Al iniciar un taller, los participantes son parte de una serie de juegos, tanto verbales como físicos, descubiertos por Boal. Los juegos eran una parte fundamental de sus enseñanzas pues revelaban como las personas eran buenas para el diálogo. Si todo sale bien, las personas en la comunidad y en todo el planeta comenzarán a pensar de manera crítica acerca del mundo que les rodea y, al hacerlo, comenzarán a plantar las semillas del cambio. “Estamos buscando personas que están interesadas en realizar preguntas sobre el mundo”. La Conferencia sobre Pedagogía y Teatro de los Oprimidos (PTO) se realizará en la Universidad de Nebraska-Omaha del 26 al 29 de junio. Los talleres previos a y posteriores a la conferencia también son abiertos al público. THEATER to Fight Oppression

BRAZILIAN TEACHINGS HIGHLIGHTED AT UNO CONFERENCE

NO Professor Dr. Doug Patterson is busy organizing the 20th iteration of the Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed (PTO) Conference, running from June 26-29 at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. For the last two decades, Patterson and others have spearheaded the PTO Conference as a means to support people whose work challenges oppressive systems. They do this by promoting pedagogy (better known as critical thinking) and social justice through libratory theatre and popular education. Patterson said the event sprouted from a series of conferences held in the early 90s based around the teachings of Brazilians Augusto Boal and Paulo Freire. Boal was a champion of Brazilian politics and art who developed the system known as Theatre of the Oppressed. Freire was best known for his work Pedagogy of the Oppressed, a book that is the groundwork for empowering oppressed peoples around the world in education and politics. “His basic assumption was that humans are at their best when in dialogue,” Patterson said. “Not just words but sounds and gestures. This is how we are created as human beings. In the earliest stages of life, we have dialogue with our parents, siblings, extended family, etc.” “Then we find out after a couple of years that sometimes there is no dialogue,

there is only a monologue. Mom saying ‘Don’t put your hand on the hot stove.’ We don’t like that; we don’t like monologues because we’ve already had a couple of very rich years of engagement with the adults. But those monologues are important. Clearly, when we are young people, they are very important.” The issue, Patterson says, is when those monologues start popping up from positions of power in our world. These monologues are one-sided affairs of supremacy where those in power do all of the talking and those without (the oppressed) can’t be heard. They exist with issues of color, class, wealth, privilege, poverty, gender, sexual orientation, education, language, and more. “And in education, probably the wrong forum for these people is where they come into a classroom and get lectured at. It’s just another monologue. They get told what the world is like because that’s what oppressed people experience all the time is a world of monologue,” Patterson said. This is the sort of thing PTO is attempting to remedy using techniques and methods developed by Boal and Freire. “Freire said ‘Let’s teach each other’. Let’s find out what we know and, in that process, begin to engage in dialogue. Then, feel free to interrogate the material. Let’s ask questions of the text and material in front of us. This is where we get to pedagogy or critical thinking,” said Patterson.

in the hope of stimulating change throughout our communities. “One of the things that’s important to understand is that no one needs to be remotely experienced in theatre to do this kind of work or even remotely experienced in formal educational theory,” Patterson said. “It’s deeply community based. What we are trying to do is erase those barriers between educational process and the community. Invite everybody to engage.” As a workshop begins, participants take part in a series of games, both verbal and physical, discovered by Boal. Games were a core to Boal’s teachings as they revealed to people how good they were at dialogue. With any luck, people throughout the community and all over the world will start to think critically about the world around them and, in doing so, begin to plant the seeds of change. “We are looking for people who are interested in asking questions about the world.” The Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Conference will be held at the University of Nebraska-Omaha from June 26-29. Pre and post-conference workshops are offered to the public as well. Special funding has been provided to make additional registration scholarships for people living, studying and working in the Omaha Metro area available. Once engaged in dialogue, oppressed peoples can start to learn and ask question about the world around them and why the dynamic of oppression exists. “In this, oppressed populations begin to understand the importance of not only dialogue but of critical thinking. This works so that when they leave the classroom, they begin to ask questions about their circumstances. It’s those kind of questions that are truly important to oppressed populations.” Artistically, the art form of theatre has long been a monologue. It uses all of its tools and techniques to convince an audience of a reality that’s not really there. Augusto Boal thought this type of theatre was not well suited for oppressed populations. “He said what we need to do is have an interrogative theatre,” Patterson said. “A theatre that presents something and then asks questions about it and then asks the audience to change it.” The whole idea comes down to three actions the PTO tries to share.

LATINAS TABACO Y CANCER UN IMPACTO POSITIVO EN LA SALUD PÚBLICA Por Bernardo Montoya

n Omaha han surgido diversos grupos enfocados a la salud y educación de las minorías. Muchos han desaparecido luego de lograr un objetivo a corto plazo o incluso han dejando su misión inconclusa. Satisfactoriamente, otros, han logrado su cometido, manteniendo un trabajo constante que va acrecentándose al proyectar nuevas metas que en síntesis, les colocan en la base educativa de una comunidad. Tal es el caso de grupo llamado: Latinas Tabaco Y Cáncer. Surgieron en el 2005, buscando atacar una “epidemia” que estaba devastando a la mujer que tenía el hábito de fumar, ignorando quizá los peligros que esto generaba, no solo a su salud, sino a la de aquellos que le rodeaban. Para entender la magnitud del problema que se buscaba atacar, basta señalar que poco antes de que surgieran Latinas Tabaco y Cáncer, el director de Salud Pública de los Estados Unidos (US Surgeon General) había emitido un informe alarmante, llamado “La mujer y el hábito de fumar”. En el se decía que la tasa de mortalidad de cáncer de pulmón en las mujeres, causada principalmente por el hábito de fumar cigarrillos, se había incrementado un 600 por ciento. El informe se presentó junto con una declaratoria que señalaba: “Cuando nos estamos refiriendo a los problemas de salud pública, no sé bede dar un mal uso a la palabra “epidemia”. Sin embargo, en este momento no hay mejor palabra, porque evidentemente, esta enfermedad relacionada con el hábito de fumar en las mujeres es una epidemia en su totalidad y se debe atacar, creando programas o campañas especificas que ayuden a frenar sus estragos...” Por otro lado, al buscar hacer frente a los problemas de salud, los latinos siguen teniendo más probabilidades de ser representados de manera desproporcionada. Teniendo esto claro, es fácil entender la importancia del grupo Latinas Tabaco y Cáncer, dirigido a mujeres inmigrantes hispanohablantes. La forma que utilizan para hacer frente a los problemas de salud, es capacitando a la comunidad para entender la problemática planteada, lo cual cubre la parte de promoción educativa. Esto de manera pública y gratuita. Recientemente, en las instalaciones de El Museo Latino, realizaron una de sus reuniones habituales, en las que se buscó aumentar la conciencia y la educación sobre los peligros del consumo de tabaco y la exposición al humo de segunda mano. Hay que enfatizar que de acuerdo al Centro Médico de la Universidad de Nebraska, las enfermedades causadas por el tabaquismo matan a más de 437.900 personas al año en Estados Unidos. Irónicamente, a pesar de las campañas contra el tabaco y las cláusulas de exención de responsabilidad médica, mucha gente continúa fumando o comienza a hacerlo todos los años. Ahora bien, Latinas Tabaco y Cáncer, ha puesto especial atención en la población joven, ya que la Sociedad

Estadounidense del Cáncer (American Cáncer Society), ha indicado que el 90 por ciento de los nuevos fumadores son niños o adolescentes. De acuerdo con la Sociedad Americana del Pulmón (American Lung Society), cada día, más de 6.000 personas (menores de 18 años de edad) fuman su primer cigarrillo. Más de 2.000 de ellos se convertirán en fumadores habituales. Con datos tan preocupantes, Latinas Tabaco Y Cáncer ha desarrollado proyectos para influir en las normas sociales sobre el consumo de tabaco y la prevención de enfermedades en la comunidad latina. Encabezadas por Athena Ramos y Antonia Correa, del Centro para Reducir las Disparidades en Salud, de UNMC, las mujeres del grupo han ejecutado diversos proyectos. Aquí destaca la creación de una fotonovela, el desarrollo del libro de poesía “Sencillamente Latinas” y la participación durante el Día Mundial Sin Tabaco. Como una tradición, se les ve también en eventos comunitarios como: Cinco de Mayo, El Grito, El Día de Los Muertos, Caminata NAMI, Caminata Susan Komen y ferias de salud. Favorablemente, durante los pasados nueve años se han implementado políticas públicas para seguir creando ambientes libres de humo en exteriores de restaurantes y edificios multifamiliares. De hecho, actualmente hay una Ley de Aire Limpio en el Interior de Nebraska, proclamada en el 2008, la cual exige lugares de trabajo libres de humo en su interior, la cual opera en todo el estado de Nebraska, desde el 1 de junio de 2009. El objetivo de la ley es proteger la salud pública y el bienestar, mediante la prohibición de fumar en lugares públicos y lugares de trabajo. Esta ley elimina la posibilidad de fumar en los lugares internos que estén cerrados, incluyendo restaurantes, bares, y otros lugares de trabajo, así como lugares públicos cerrados. Hoy, Latinas Tabaco y Cáncer se han unido a la nueva iniciativa de MOTAC, que es: parques y áreas recreativas libren de humo. Por lo anterior, se puede resumir que Latinas Tabaco y Cáncer han logrado un impacto positivo en la prevención del tabaco, ya no solamente en mujeres, sino en la comunidad en general. “Esto es el resultado de cada una de las integrantes del grupo. Así haya estado menos o más tiempo que otras, su participación siempre ha sido y seguirá siendo valiosa, porque al sumar los esfuerzos se logran los objetivos que nos hemos planteado, para nuestro propio beneficio, el de nuestros familiares, amigos y comunidad en general”, dijo Correa, con lo cual enalteció el trabajo de todos los que han participado en la noble misión asumida por Latinan Tabaco y Cáncer. n Omaha, several new groups have been formed with a focus on the health and education of minorities. Many have disappeared after achieving their short term goal, or after leaving behind an unsuccessful project. But it is great to hear there are groups that constantly work towards new goals that keep them busy as they help the community. This is the case of a group called Latinas Tabaco y Cancer, which started in 2005, with the main goal to attack an “epidemic” that was hurting women who had made a habit out of smoking, ignoring all the risks generated by this, not only to their own health, but to the health of those around them. To understand the magnitude of the problem they wanted to attack, we must point out that a little before Latinas Tabaco y Cancer came to be, the Surgeon General of the United States issued an alarming report called “Women and Smoking,” which stated that the mortality rate of lung cancer in women - mainly caused from smoking cigarettes - had increased by 600 percent. The report was presented along with a statement that said: “When we talk about public health problems, we shouldn’t give a wrong use to the word ‘epidemic.’ However, right now there is no better word for it because, evidently, this disease related to smoking as a habit of women is a full epidemic that must be attacked by creating specific programs and campaigns to help us bring a stop to its damage.” But when Latinos try to face these health issues, they’re still not properly represented.

This is why it’s important to have groups like Latinas Tabaco y Cancer, lead by Latino immigrants. This group informs the community so that they can understand the problem at hand, and said classes are free and open to the public, and the group recently had several events at El Museo Latino to let people know about the dangers and consequences from smoking as well as from second hand smoke. According to the Medical Center of the University of Nebraska, over 437,900 people die each year in the United States from diseases related to smoking. Even with all the campaigns against smoking, and with all the medical liability exemption clauses, every year more and more people start to smoke or continue doing so. Latinas Tabaco y Cancer has placed a particular focus on helping the young population since, according to the American Cancer Society, 90 percent of new smokers are kids or teenagers. On top of this, the American Lung Society has stated that every day over 6,000 people (18 and under), smoke their first cigarette, and more than 2,000 of them will become regular smokers. With such worrying stats, Latinas Tabaco y Cancer has developed several projects to have an impact on regulations over the consumption of tobacco, as well as on preventing diseases in the Latino community. Lead by Athena Ramos and Antonia Correa, from the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at UNMC, the women in this group have worked on many projects. They even created a fotonovela, a poetry book titled “Simply La-

tinas” (Sencillamente Latinas), and they have also participated at the World No Tobacco Day. As is a tradition, they’re also always working during Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day, at the Day of the Dead, the Susan Komen Walk, as well as at several health fairs. And it pleases us to report that, over the last nine years, more and more public policies have been implemented in order to create smoke free environments inside and outside of restaurants and multifamily buildings. In fact, we have a Clean Air Act in Nebraska from 2008 that requires that all workplaces are smoke free, and said Law has been enforced since June 1st, 2009. Its goal is to protect the public’s health and wellbeing by not allowing people to smoke at public locations or at workplaces. And now Latinas Tabaco y Cancer has joined the new MOTAC initiative: parks and recreation areas which are truly smoke-free. Because of all this, we can clearly state that Latinas Tabaco y Cancer has had a positive impact in preventing the use of tobacco, not only for women but for the whole community. “This is a result of the work of each one of our members. Even though some have been here longer than others, every single one of them is important to our cause since it is thanks to their effort that we can all benefit from this, for the wellbeing of our family and friends, of the whole community, and of ourselves,” said Correa, praising everyone’s work towards the noble goal of Latinas Tabaco y Cancer. MOTIVA A OTRAS JÓVENES PARA NO RENDIRSE

los 14 años, Daniela Rojas Flores emigró a Estados Unidos con su madre y hermanita menor, dejando atrás a su padre en su natal Bogotá, Colombia. Son más de 7 años los que Daniela lleva aquí y sin embargo, lejos de sentirse emocionada por estar a punto de terminar sus estudios en el College of Saint Mary, su rostro muestra la tristeza de alguien que se debate ante un futuro incierto: “Tengo miedo porque este es mi último año en la universidad y no puedo dejar de pensar en qué es lo que pasará cuando finalmente me gradúe. Estoy haciendo muchas cosas en este momento en el que puedo ver los frutos de mi esfuerzo pero no sé si después termine trabajando en un McDonald’s o en algún daycare (guardería) por no tener documentos, ya que me negaron la aplicación para el DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, o Acción Diferida), simplemente porque llegué en octubre del 2007 y no, en junio del 2007”. Daniela ha obtenido excelentes calificaciones en todas sus materias y forma parte de la llamada Dean’s List (Cuadro de Honor) una meta que se propuso alcanzar desde que llegó a Nebraska: “En Colombia nunca me había ido bien en los estudios, digamos que pasaba ‘por debajo de la puerta’, pero en el momento en que pisé por primera vez este país me propuse ser la mejor porque no deseaba que todo el sacrificio que hicieron mis padres por darme una mejor vida, fuera en vano, ¡y lo cumplí!. Me gradué con honores de mi secundaria y aquí en el College of Saint Mary colaboro con la Academia Latina de Verano y trabajo en el Departamento de Vida Residencial”. La joven hispana destaca por su talento como artista pero estudiar una Licenciatura en Artes Plásticas y una en Teología, no eran precisamente su sueño: “Yo deseaba estudiar arquitectura, ésa era mi primera opción, pero en el programa de ingeniería me dijeron que no podría continuar con ésa car-

rera porque requería que aprobara unos exámenes del estado, así que pensé en ser maestra pero también tendría que tomar ciertas evaluaciones para las que se requiere tener documentos, y lo mismo sucedió cuando pensé en estudiar psicología. Por eso me decidí por el arte ya que me puedo graduar sin tomar ése tipo de exámenes. Me gusta mucho pintar en acrílico y dibujar y también realizar piezas de cerámica. En ese sentido he sido muy afortunada porque a las personas les gustan mis obras y muy seguido me invitan a participar en Art Shows (exhibiciones). Ahorita por ejemplo, he vendido todo mi trabajo, así que por ese lado creo que hice una buena elección y también lo ha sido el estudiar teología ya que Dios siempre está presente en mi vida y en todo lo que hago con mis manos, incluso es el tema de mis creaciones”. Por el momento Daniela sólo vive con su madre pues su hermana viajó recientemente a Colombia: “Ella obtuvo su Acción Diferida y le dieron un permiso especial para irse a Colombia por dos meses, pero aún no sabemos si decida quedarse allá o si regrese, todo depende de las oportunidades de trabajo que se le presenten. Precisamente el regresarme a Colombia es una de las opciones más grandes que tengo en estos momentos, porque yo también podría obtener un buen empleo con sólo incluir en mi hoja de vida que estudié aquí y que hablo inglés. Pero la verdad es que no me veo viviendo en Colombia de nuevo porque no creo poder adaptarme a la forma de vivir de allá, tan diferente, y seamos honestos, Colombia no es conocida actualmente por su seguridad. Como sea, el hecho de no tener a toda mi familia a mi lado, no se lo deseo a nadie. Es algo muy duro porque la Embajada Americana le ha negado la visa a mi papá para venir a vernos como en nueve ocasiones, y por eso mi mamá ha tenido que sacarme adelante solita. Por mi situación, yo no puedo tener un trabajo o una licencia para manejar,

así que ella ha sido mi mayor apoyo, llevándome y trayéndome a todos lados y pagando todas las cuentas. Ella siempre me impulsa para que me siga preparando, pero cuando siento que quizás no podré llegar a ayudar a mi familia o por lo menos compartir todo lo que aprendí, me pongo muy triste”. Los abogados le sugirieron a Daniela que se case para obtener sus papeles: “Pero el matrimonio es algo tan sagrado que yo no voy a jugar con eso. Yo lo único que pido es poder trabajar, y eso es un derecho que tiene cualquier ser humano, al igual que lo es el derecho a poder vivir bien. La Reforma Migratoria es aplicar el sentido común y ayudar a la gente que se ha preparado a que siga progresando”. En el College of Saint Mary, Daniela tiene tanto el respeto de sus compañeras y profesores, como su cariño: “Yo llegué aquí gracias a la Academia de Verano Latina y a personas como María Luisa Gastón que confiaron en mi y que desean ayudarme. Ahora que participo en ése programa, yo también animo a las chicas a que no se dejen vencer aunque no tengan sus papeles. Todos saben que soy muy apasionada con lo que hago y que me gusta utilizar mi carisma para impactar especialemente a la gente joven. No importa lo difícil que sea una situación, lo que vale es lo que tu haces con las situaciones y cómo consigues cambiarlas para que se transformen en algo bueno en tu vida”. Por último Daniela agregó: “Lo primero que la comunidad debe hacer para promover un cambio positivo es informarse, conocer qué decisiones está tomando el gobierno, cuál es la postura de los senadores en Nebraska y lo que está pasando localmente. Necesitamos darles oportunidades a las personas que lo merecen, no es justo que quienes se han graduado con honores terminen cambiando jabones en un baño”.

WHILE SHE WAITS FOR AN Daniela Rojas MOTIVATES OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE TO NOT GIVE UP IMMIGRATION REFORM, [By Marina Rosado]

hen she was 14, Daniela Rojas Flores moved to the United States with her mother and younger sister, leaving her father in Bogota, Colombia. She’s been here for more than 7 years, and instead of being happy about almost completing her studies at the College of Saint Mary, her face shows a sense of sadness due to an uncertain future: “I’m afraid because this is my last year of college and I can’t stop thinking about what’ll eventually happen once I graduate. Right now I can see that all of my work has been for this moment, but I don’t know if I’ll end up working at McDonald’s or at a daycare because I don’t have my papers in order, since my DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) application was denied, simply because I came here in October, 2007, and not on June, 2007.” Daniela has excellent grades on all of her assignments, and she’s part of the Dean’s List, a goal she set when she arrived at Nebraska: “At Colombia, I was never good at school. I was just barely making it to the lowest grade to pass each class, but as soon as I arrived at this country, I said to myself that I would not let all the hard work of my parents go to waste, and I made it! I graduated from high school with honors, and here at the College of Saint Mary, I help at Latino Summer School, and I also work at the Department of Residence Life.” This young Latina shines due to her talent as an artist, but studying for a Bachelor’s in Arts and another one in Theology was not exactly part of her dream: “I wanted to study architecture as my first choice, but I was told at the engineering program that I wouldn’t be able to complete my studies because I would need to pass some tests from

the state, so I thought about becoming a teacher, but I ran into the same problem since I’d need my immigration papers in order to take the tests, and this also happened when I decided to study psychology. That’s why I ended up going for the arts, because I didn’t have to take any tests of that kind. I love to create oil paintings, and I also like to draw, as well as making ceramic art. I’ve been very lucky because people love my art, and I’ve been invited to art shows. For example, right now I’ve sold all of my work, so I believe I made the right choice. And the same is true for studying theology because God has always been in my life and in everything I do with my hands, even in my own creations.” Right now Daniela lives alone with her mother since her sister recently took a trip to Colombia: “Her Deferred Action was approved, and she was granted a special permit to travel to Colombia for two months, but we don’t know if she’ll decide to stay there or if she’ll come back. It all depends on the job opportunities she has. Going back to Colombia is also one of my options, because I could easily find a job over there because I’ve studied here and I can speak English. But I really don’t see myself living again in Colombia because I couldn’t get used to the lifestyle over there, and, let’s be honest: right now Colombia is not the safest place to be. Anyway, not having my whole family by my side is not ideal. It’s very hard for us because the United States embassy has denied my dad a Visa to come here - on more than one occasion - which is why my mom has had to work so hard for my wellbeing. Because of my situation, I can’t work and I can’t have a driver’s license, so mom has been helping me, driving me all over the place and paying all of our bills. She’s al-

ways encouraging me to do better, because I get very sad when I realize I won’t be able to help my family or at least share what I’ve learned.” Lawyers advised Daniela to get married: “But for me, marriage is a something sacred and I won’t play games with it. All I want is to be able to work, a right that every human being should have, as is the case for having the right of having a real life. Immigration reform should be about applying some common sense to the situation, in order to help people do better in life.” At the of College of Saint Mary, Daniela has earned the love and support of classmates and teachers: “I arrived here thanks to the Latino Summer School and because of people like Maria Luisa Gaston, who trusted me and who wanted to help me. Now that I’m part of the program, I also encourage other girls so that they don’t give up just because they don’t have all of their papers. Everyone knows I’m very passionate with what I do, and that I like to use my charisma to be a positive influence in the life of the young ones. No matter how hard things are, all that matters is what you do about it, and how you manage to transform them into something useful for your life.” To conclude, Daniela added: “The first thing the community has to do is to be informed in order to promote a positive change, so that they can know about the decisions being made by the government, about what the senators for Nebraska are doing for our communities. We need to provide an opportunity for the people that deserve it, because it’s not fair that those who graduate with honors end up working in a bathroom changing soaps.”

Economic Development in Omaha Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation (MLCDC) is a local non-profit organization that is dedicated to generating economic growth and develop a sustainable future for Latinos in the area. MLCDC currently supports the creation of new Latino businesses and they help maintain the stability of established Latino businesses in the greater Omaha area. This organization also aims to provide Latino families access to the services in the area that will increase their opportunity for growth and also increase their quality of life. Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation (MLCDC) will be hosting a meeting on July 24 that will address the economic development of South Omaha and opportunities for Latinos in Omaha.
