LA COMUNIDAD DE OMAHA CELEBRÓ EN GRANDE EL DÍA MUNDIAL DE LOS REFUGIADOS

a ciudad de Ohama vivió uno de los eventos culturales más importantes en términos de integración y educación. Se trató de la celebración del Día Mundial de los Refugiados, en la escuela Benson.

Este proyecto es un esfuerzo que anualmente realiza el Grupo de Trabajo para Refugiados en Omaha y las Escuelas Públicas de Omaha; el cual emite una invitación pública y gratuita a la comunidad en general, para participar en un día de covivencia familiar, en paralelo con diversas actividades que buscan educar sobre diversos temas relacionados con los refugiados. Dos aspectos que acertadamente se fusionan con una gran fiesta que celebra la diversidad cultural.

Hay que subrayar que Nebraska es de los estados que ha presentado un incremente en el número de nuevos refugiados, provenido principalmente del sureste asiático, Vietnam, África, Oriente Medio, Bosnia y la antigua Unión Soviética.

En los últimos años, Omaha ha recibido a más de un millar de estas personas que llegan buscando paz y libertad, lejos de la tierra que los vio nacer. En muchos de los casos, debido a conflictos armados, persecuciones y violaciones de sus derechos humanos.

Por ello, OPS expuso la situación actual de los refugiados en el mundo, para lograr entender la razón por la cual se encuentran viviendo en Omaha.

En lo que se refiere al número de estudiantes refugiados que han ingresado a las Escuelas Públicas de Omaha, las cifras han aumentado un 84 por ciento en los últimos cinco años. Actualmente, se tiene registro de 1800 estudiantes, cifra que representa el 3 por ciento del total de alumnos del distrito.

Este crecimiento ha hecho que las instancias mencionadas, a cargo de la organización del evento, pongan mayor empeño en la inovación de actividades y la inclusión de mayores exponentes.

Así, el día incluyó un desfile de banderas, un programa educativo sobre temas de refugiados, diversas presentaciones de música y danza, venta de artesanías, desfile de moda, actividades deportivas, un carnaval infantil, una ceremonia de reconocimientos y alimentos varios. Todo para poder recibir a más de 1.400 participantes.

Importante resultó el aporte del Centro Médico de la Universidad de Nebraska, a cargo de presentar una Feria de Salud Integral para Refugiados, la cual incluyó exámenes dentales y de la vista, aunado a información múltiple enfocada a la prevención de enfermedades.

Muy emotiva resultó la ceremonia de naturalización que ahí también se realizó, dando pauta para poder comenzar con un panel de discusión, con refugiados y asilados de Irak, Somalia, Myanmar,

Tailandia y Bután. El tema central fue el planteamiento de las presiones políticas que les orillaron a inmigrar a los Estados Unidos.

Más adelante, la ceremonia de galardones fue el marco perfecto para exponer el talento artístico de las distintas comunidades de refugiados, mismas que se encargaron también de presentar un desfile de modas, como cierre del evento.

Fueron 6 horas de actividad, en las instalaciones de la escuela Benson, patrocinadas también por la Asociación Comunitaria del Sur de Sudán y por los Servicios Familiares Luteranos.

Este evento fue también la oportunidad perfecta para que OPS demostrara que en el terreno educativo ha estado avanzando más haya de lo esperado, pues claramente se ha esforzado por garantizar una mejor integración y éxito de los refugiados; tarea que en gran medida recae en la coordinación del programa de Inglés como segundo idioma y del programa de educación migrante y de refugiados: Susan Mayberger.

Por supuesto que este ha sido un trabajo integral, que ha considerando la participación de los padres de familia en diversos momentos. Lo cual permite considerar a OPS como un pilar para el reasentamiento familiar y la conservación cultural.

De esta forma, culminó el séptimo festejo anual por el Día Mundial de los Refugiados en Omaha, mismo que exhibió parte de la riqueza estudiantil y comunitaria que tiene OPS.

REFUGEES he city of Omaha experience one of the most important cultural events of the year with a celebration for World Refugee Day at Benson High School.

This project is a yearly effort from Work Team for Refugees in Omaha and Omaha Public Schools (OPS), both of which present an open invitation to the whole community to be part of this day for the family, along with several activities that seek to educate people on several topics relating to refugees. Both aspects certainly help to ignite this event to celebrate cultural diversity.

We must highlight that the Nebraska is one of the areas that has seen an increase in the number of refugees that make their way here, from the territories in Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Africa, Bosnia, the Middle East and the former Soviet Union.

Over the last few years, Omaha has received more than a thousand individuals coming here seeking peace and freedom, far from the land where they were born. In many cases, they had to leave due to war, persecutions or flagrant violations of human rights.

Therefore, OPS talked about the current situation of refugees around the world in order to understand the reason why several of them are current living in Omaha.

As for the number of refugees who have entered the system of the Omaha Public Schools, stats show an increase of 84 percent over the last five years. Today, around 1,800 students are registered, a number that corresponds to 3 percent of all students for the district.

This increase is one of the reasons why the aforementioned institutions in charge of this event are set on working as hard as possible in order to include innovative activities, as well as more speakers.

Because of said effort, the day included a flag parade, an educational program with several topics relating to refugees, a wide range of musical and dance-infused presentations, a fashion parade, sports activities, a kids carnival, a ceremony for presenting several awards, food stands and even the sale of arts and crafts. Thanks to all the hard work, over 1,400 people took part in the celebration.

The Health Fair for Refugees was the charge of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and it included dental and sight check-ups, while also providing valuable information for preventing diseases.

A very emotional naturalization ceremony also took place during the event, and this set the tone for discussing several topics with refugees from Iraq, Somalia, Myanmar, Thailand and Bhutan. The main topic was talking about the political pressures that forced them to immigrate to the United States.

Later in the day, the awards ceremony allowed everyone to marvel at the artistic talent of the members of the diverse number of refugee communities at the event, and it was said communities who also took part of a fashion show as the final activity for this event.

The event lasted for six hours at Benson High School, thanks to the sponsorship of the Southern Sudan Community Association and Lutheran Family Services.

This event was also the perfect opportunity for the OPS to talk about the great advances made in the education field since they’ve clearly made an effort to guarantee a better integration and success rate for refugees. This area is under the hands of Susan Mayberger, who is in charge of coordinating the English as a second language program, as well as of the refugee and immigrants’ education program.

This has been a team effort, and it couldn’t have happened without the support and help from parents. It is thanks to all of this that the OPS can be considered as a solid foundation for proper resettlement and cultural preservation.

And this is how the seventh annual World Refugee Day celebrations concluded at Omaha, showcasing the student and community richness of OPS.

OBAMA QUICK FIX WON’T SOLVE New America Media, Michelle Brané

I

n recent months, an unprecedented surge of refugee women and children has been traveling alone to the United States to seek protection at our southern border. The vast majority are fleeing their homes in the Central American countries of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, and risking their lives as they make long and incredibly dangerous journeys to seek refuge on our soil.

The Women’s Refugee Commission has been closely monitoring this population since 2011.

Through our research, we concluded over two years ago that without major changes in U.S. aid or foreign policy to the Central America region, the United States would continue to receive more vulnerable migrants due to the humanitarian crisis developing in the region. Organized crime, forced gang recruitment, violence against women, and weak economic and social systems are all contributing to the pervasive insecurity in these countries.

The flow of refugees fleeing from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala has not only continued, but has increased dramatically and rapidly as violence in the region has escalated.

And refugees are not only coming to the United States. The United Nations has found that asylum requests in the the neighboring countries of Mexico, Panama, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Belize have skyrocketed by 712% since 2009.

THE REGIONAL

REFUGEE

While some children may be seeking to reunite with their parents or family in the United States, the motivating factor forcing them from their homes is violence and persecution. The children we spoke with told us they feared they would die if they stayed in their home country, and although they might die during the journey, at least they would have a chance.

Particularly concerning about the recent surge is that the children making the perilous migration journey are now younger than in years past.

It has become common for children as young as 4-10 years old to be picked up and arrested by the U.S. Border Patrol. Additionally, a higher percentage of the children are girls, many of whom arrive pregnant as a result of sexual violence. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) recently conducted research with this population and found that 58% of the children interviewed raised international protection concerns.

Children also come to the United States with their parents. Since 2012, the number of families arriving at the southern border of the United States has increased significantly. The vast majority of these families are

made up of women with very young children and are fleeing the same violence and insecurity driving the refugee children.

Our country has a long and dedicated commitment to human rights, due process and the assurance that individuals who arrive at our borders seeking safety are not turned away without addressing their claims.

Under international and domestic law, we have an obligation to properly screen and provide protection for unaccompanied minors, trafficking victims and asylum seekers who arrive at our borders. In recent months, however, the government has been unprepared and overwhelmed by the numbers of children and families in need. Rather than addressing the issue in a manner that is in line with our American ideals and recognizing it as a regional refugee situation, the Obama administration is looking for a quick fix and compromising our values and the lives of women and children in the process by responding as though it were an immigration issue.

We are deeply concerned by the government’s recent announcement that it will drastically expand detention of families and will expedite the processing of asylum cases.

Harsh detention and deportation policies endanger the well-being of children and families, present a risk that individuals with legitimate claims to asylum and other forms of protection will be summarily returned to countries where their lives are seriously threatened, and do not work as a deterrent against future migration. Additionally, the administration has proposed to roll back laws that are in place to protect children, in order to quickly and with no due process, deport kids back to the dangers they escaped.

This humanitarian refugee crisis is a complex human tragedy and needs both short-term and long-term attention. It requires a holistic approach that prioritizes additional resources for addressing the root causes of this crisis, strengthening protection in the region, and reinforcing our protection and adjudication of claims, not blocking access to protection and sending women and children back to the dangerous situations they are fleeing without adequate due process. The United States must not compromise its long-standing commitment to humanitarian principles in the hope of finding a quick solution.

P

She was part of a press conference July 1 held by Cuban-American congressman Joe Garcia announcing he rejectes President Obama’s proposal to launch an “aggressive strategy of deterrence” as a method of dealing with the crisis of Central American children detained at the border.

President Obama anounced June 30 that he is “providing the DHS Secretary additional authority to exercise discretion in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children from non-contiguous countries like Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.”

“This includes fulfilling our legal and moral obligation to make sure we appropriately care for unaccompanied children who are apprehended,” the president stated in his letter to Congress, “while taking aggressive steps to surge resources to our Southwest border to deter both adults and children from this dangerous journey, increase capacity for enforcement and removal proceedings, and quickly return unlawful migrants to their home countries.”

Make no mistake, that is a carefully parsed statement. More than 52,000 unaccompanied children and 39,000 adults with children, most of them from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, have been ap-

prehended at the border since October of last year, prompting a humanitarian crisis that the adminstration and others are speaking about in terms of unlawful immigration.

But Kevin Appleby, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ director of migration policy and public affairs sees the situation differently. He sees the unaccompanied children and families with children on the border as asylum seekers or refugees. “Many of these children have valid asylum claims,” he told CBS news recently.

The USCCB has long been tracking the Central American flood fleeing the “generalized violence at the state and local levels and a corresponding breakdown of the rule of law” in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. In fact, a report issued by the USCCB in November of last year, as well as a study conducted by the United Nations High Commisisioner for Refugees found the exodus of children and families from the Central American countries to be a forcible displacement because they suffered or faced harm that could indicate a need for international protection.

Honduras has the world’s highest murder rate — 90.4 homicides per 100,000 people in 2012 — according to a United Nations report released in April of this year. El Salvador is fourth with 41.2 per 100,000, and Guatemala is fifth with 39.9. (Another Central American nation, Belize, ranks third with 44.7, and Venezuela, with 53.7 ranks second).

world. Guatemala is third, and Honduras is sixth, according to the 2011 report “Global Burden of Armed Violence.”

But, as in the 1980s when Salvadorans and Guatemalans fled genocide and bloody civil wars and sought refuge in the United States, Central Americans are rarely granted asylee status. According to the American Immigration Council, “While the numbers of asylum claimants from Central America and Mexico have increased, USCIS shows low numbers of affirmative asylum grants to Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Hondurans, and Mexicans from FY 2003 to FY 2012. Likewise, immigration courts granted similarly low numbers of defensive asylum claims during those same years.

In FY 2012, immigration courts granted asylum at rates of 6 percent to Salvadoran applicants, 7 percent to Guatemalan, 7 percent to Honduran, and 1 percent to Mexican applications. These figures contrast with asylum grant rates of more than 80 percent to applicants from Egypt, Iran, and Somalia for the same period.”

So why not call these children and families detained at the border (and soon to be deported as part of the administration’s “aggressive deterrence strategy” and “sustained border security surge”) what experts clearly believe they are: refugees and/or asylees?

Because to accord them that status means we are obliged to consider that “they are entitled to special protection on account of their position,” according to the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees adopted

by the United Nations General Assembly, of which the United States is an original signatory. The 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees further recommends that “governments continue to receive refugees in their territories and that they act in concert in a true spirit of international cooperation in order that these refugees may find asylum and the possibility of resettlement.”

Lost in the official talk about repatriation and in the sanitized term of unaccompanied minors (rather than unaccompanied children) is the stark fact that what has been proposed gravely endangers the truly vulnerable. According to the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies in San Francisco, “In Honduras, children face an especially dire situation.

Recently, the number of extrajudicial killings (illegal government-sponsored executions) of minors has risen dramatically.”

Choosing to continue to make this an immigration issue rather than an asylum and refugee issue permits Obama to reiterate to a recalcitrant Congress that real immigration reform is necessary.

But it also feeds anti-immigration sentiment expressed loudly in public comment and action.

“This is an invasion,” said Raymond Herrera of We the People as he and other Minutemen blocked buses with 150 children being taken to a center in California July 1.

And the compassion, when it is heard on this issue at all, comes in private, quiet messages that, clearly, neither Obama nor our legislators are hearing.

UN CORAZÓN DIVIDIDO ENTRE DOS NACIONES

a vida de Mariano Alarcón se divide en dos mundos completamente diferentes pero igual de maravillosos. Uno, refleja su vida en Omaha al lado de sus dos hijos pequeños y de su esposa Theresa, quien lo apoya en la administración de una de las empresas familiares, la escuela para la enseñanza del idioma español llamada Immersion Spanish Language House. El otro, aunque difícil, es un mundo lleno de esperanza, donde Alarcón ayuda a la niñez mexicana en su natal estado de Morelos, a través de la asociación civil Prochavos.

Originario de Cuernavaca, Alarcón creció en el seno de una familia única: “Los padres de mi mamá tenían dinero, al contrario de mi padre quien sufrió carencias y creció en un orfanatorio.

Cuando ellos se conocieron, mi madre impulsó muchísimo a mi padre y él terminó sus estudios gracias a ella. Juntos salieron adelante y gracias a eso, yo tuve muchas comodidades como el asistir a escuelas particulares”.

Sin embargo, Alarcón relató que en un momento cargado de una espiritualidad irrepetible, cuando su madre oraba devotamente por su hijos: “Ella creyó escuchar la voz de Dios que le decía, ‘cuida de mis niños y yo cuidaré de los tuyos’. Así que su vida cambió por completo y comenzó a buscar la manera de ayudar a los niños de la calle. Al principio trayéndolos a casa para brindarles protección ya que muchos de ellos ni siquiera sabían su nombre o tenían un acta de nacimiento, por lo que esos niños necesitados se convirtieron poco a poco en mis hermanos.”.

Así nació el proyecto de vida Prochavos: “Con el tiempo compramos una casa para darle cabida a todos los niños que muchas veces llegan desde el Distrito Federal buscando refugio, ya sea porque tienen problemas familiares o porque habían sido golpeados y abusados sexualmente. Ahí reciben educación y también tratamiento psicológico”.

La fundación de la casa hogar para chicos desamparados modificó el nivel de vida de Alarcón, cuando el contaba con 19 años: “Todos los ingresos de la familia se concentraron en proporcionarles a los chicos todo aquello que pudieran necesitar, así que yo tuve que empezar a trabajar para terminar mis propios estudios en comunicación y periodismo haciendo de todo, desde dar clases de inglés hasta tener un programa de radio por algunos meses y hacer doblaje de películas.

Finalmente decidí venir a Estados Unidos para perfeccionar mi inglés en Nueva York”.

Al cabo de unos meses, Alarcón se mudó a Nebraska, donde trabajó con la Iglesia Católica Saint Mary en West Point: “Colaboré como ministro de hispanos por tres años y me encargaba de ver que se respetaran sus derechos visitando las fábricas para asegurarnos que sólo trabajaran el tiempo necesario. La verdad es que yo no conocía nada sobre los hispanos en este país, y así fue como me di cuenta de la gran necesidad que había de elevar su nivel educativo, por eso decidí cursar una maestría en educación en UNL”.

Alarcón tuvo la oportunidad de dar clases a nivel secundaria en escuelas públicas de Omaha, hasta que fue invitado a participar en el proyecto de la arquidiócesis católica para estudiantes hispanos y afroamericanos que fue la escuela secundaria Saint Peter Claver Cristo Rey: “Aunque lastimosamente ya cerró, fue algo muy bonito porque les enseñaba a los estudiantes algunas materias, cómo hablar en público y habilidades básicas para encontrar un empleo”.

Al concluir dicha etapa, Alarcón entró al equipo docente de la escuela católica privada Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, y poco después, decidió que era el momento de abrir su propia escuela: “Hace dos años fundé un espacio de transición donde puedo no sólo enseñar español sino pasar la

cultura latinoamericana a todos nuestros estudiantes.

Actualmente tengo tres profesores, dos de ellos colombianos y una maestra mexicana. La idea es que los participantes lleguen y se sientan como en casa, que disfruten de algo de comer y que conozcan la cultura hispana en otro aspecto mucho más lindo y real que el que tienen por los medios de comunicación. En este momento tenemos como 20 estudiantes, en su mayoría de nivel profesionista por el costo de las clases, ya que son casi privadas”.

Aunado a esto, Alarcón igualmente le ha apostado a la enseñanza de los llamados home schoolers: “Esto es muy conocido en Iowa y Nebraska, y se trata de niños americanos, caucasianos, cuyos padres no están de acuerdo con algunas materias que les dan en las escuelas del gobierno y deciden educarlos en casa. Los niños se quedan en su hogar y reciben instrucción escolar por parte de su madre. Ellos deben presentar sus exámenes y sus estudios son reconocidos, así que llegado el tiempo pueden ingresar en cualquier universidad. A mi me interesó muchísimo ya que los niveles de calificaciones que obtienen son muy altos, así que ahora nuestros maestros van con algunas de esas familias a enseñarles español mientras los chicos se encuentran en un ambiente más relajado”.

Entre los planes futuros de Alarcón se encuentra “el abrir una escuela infantil, pero con el mismo programa de Immersion para preparar a los niños antes de ingresar al kinder”, aunque por ahora, todos sus esfuerzos, aunque a distancia, se enfoquen en conseguir una mejor vida para esos pequeños que tanto lo necesitan en México.

Organizaciones locales se juntan para colectar firmas Residentes de Nebraska Trabajando Para Mejores Salarios (Nebraskans for Better Wages) y el Centro Laboral se han unido para colectar más de 300 firmas para la petición de salarios mínimos. Los voluntarios, incluyendo el Senador Jeremy Nordquist, empezaron a ir de puerta en puerta para difundir el conocimiento sobre la petición de salarios mínimos y hablar con miembros de la comunidad sobre los beneficios de aumentar el salario mínimo. Proyección local Omaha Juntos Una Comunidad (OTOC) y Nebraska Appleseed presentaran una proyección gratuita de la película “Documentado.” Esta una nueva película producida por José Antonio Vargas es la historia de primera mano de la vida en los Estados Unidos como inmigrante indocumentado.

Brecha Salarial El Centro Hispano de Investigación Pew recientemente publicó un informe que indica que la brecha salarial entre personas de altos y bajos salarios ha aumentado más entre los hispanos en los Estados Unidos. Según el informe “el promedio de los ingresos semanales de los hispanos en el extremo inferior de la escala salarial se redujo a un 9.4 por ciento de $278 a $252 entre 2007 y 2013.”

En comparación, el informe indica que los ingresos medios semanales de los hispanos con los salarios más altos soporte aumentó de 4.4 por ciento. Otros grupos étnicos también se han enfrentado a brechas de ingreso, pero no en la misma medida como los latinos. El Centro Hispano de Investigación Pew indica que una tasa alta de desempleo y un aumento del trabajo a tiempo parcial son las causas de la gran caída de los ingresos de los trabajadores hispanos de bajos salarios. Mariano Alarcón A HEART DIVIDED BETWEEN TWO NATIONS

ariano Alarcon’s life is between two completely different but wonderful worlds. One reflects his life in Omaha with his two sons and his wife, Theresa, who helps to run a family businesses: Spanish Language House, a school for learning Spanish. The other one, hard but full of surprises, is where Alarcon helps children from Morelos, his home state, thanks to Prochavos.

Born in Cuernavaca, Alarcon grew up in a unique family: “My mother’s parents had money, unlike my father who suffered through poverty, growing up at an orphanage. When my parents met, my mother helped by motivating him to study. Together they managed to carry on, and because of that I had a chance to study at private schools.”

Alarcon mentions a special moment full of spirituality, when his mother was praying for all of her kids: “She says she heard the voice of God that said ‘take care of my children and I will take care of your’s.’ And that moment changed her life, and she started to find a way to help the children who were living in the streets. At first she brought them to our home to protect them since most of them didn’t even know their names. They didn’t have a birth certificate. Little by little, these children became my brothers.”

This is how Prochavos was born: “We later bought a house to support all the children that usually come from the Distrito Federal seeking shelter, either due to family issues or because they were beaten or sexually abused. At our house, they receive an education as well as psychological treatment.”

This shelter for homeless kids completely changed Alarcon’s life when he was 19 years old: “All of our family’s income was used for providing anything that these kids might need, so I had to start working in order to pay for my studies in communication and journalism. I taught English classes, worked at a radio show for a few months, and even did voice-over work for movies. I finally decided to come to the United States to practice and perfect my English in New York.”

A few months later, Alarcon moved to Nebraska where he worked at Saint Mary’s Church in West Point: “I worked as a minister for Latinos for three years, making sure that their rights were upheld as they worked in the factories, so that they only worked as many hours as stated by the law. To tell you the truth, I didn’t know anything about Latinos in this country, and this is how I realized the need for providing them with a proper education, which is why I decided to get a Master’s degree in education at UNL.” Alarcon had a chance to teach at the high school level in public schools in Omaha, up until he was invited to participate in the project by the Catholic Archdiocese for Latino and African American students at Saint Peter Claver Cristo Rey: “Though, unfortunately, it has now been closed, it was a great experience because I taught students about how to speak in public, as well as how to find a job.”

After said phase, Alarcon joined the teaching staff at Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, until it was time for him to open his own school: “Two years ago I created a space where I can teach our students about the Spanish language and about Latin American culture. I currently have three

teachers, two male Colombian teachers and one Mexican female teacher. The idea is for people to come here so they can feel at home as they enjoy a nice meal as they learn about Latino culture in a real environment, different from what is in the media.

Right now we have 20 students, most of which are professionals because of the cost of our classes, since they’re private classes.”

On top of this, Alarcon has also bet on teaching the so-called homeschoolers: “This is well known in Iowa and Nebraska, and it is for kids that have parents that don’t agree with some of the courses taught at public schools, so they decide to educate kids at their homes. Kids stay home and are taught by their mother. They must complete tests, and their studies are validated for when the time comes for them to go to college. I was very interested because they usually get great grades, so now our teachers visit some families to teach them Spanish in a more relaxing environment for the kids.”

Among the plans of Alarcon, there is one for “opening a nursery school, but with the same immersion program in order to prepare kids before they go to kindergarten.” But, for now, his efforts are set on providing a better life for the kids in Mexico who desperately need all of his help.

BRIEFS Local Screening Omaha Together One Community (OTOC) and Nebraska Appleseed have partnered to present a screening of ‘Documented’ free of charge. This new film, produced by Jose Antonio Vargas, is the first-hand story of life in the United States as an undocumented immigrant. Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, wishes to raise awareness about the current status of immigrants in the United States. The free showing will take place on Tuesday, July 15 at 7 p.m. at The Urban Abbey located at 1026 Jackson Street in Omaha.

Wage Gap The Pew Hispanic Reasearch Center recently published a report indicating that the wage gap between high and low earners is rising most among Hispanics in the United States. According to the report “the median weekly earnings of Hispanics at the low end of the wage scale fell by 9.4 percent from $278 to $252 between 2007 and 2013.” In comparison, the report indicates that the median weekly earnings of Hispanics in the highest wage bracket increased by 4.4 percent.

Other ethnic groups also experienced earning gaps, but not to the same extent as Latinos. The Pew Hispanics indicates that high unemployment and a rise in part-time work is most likely to account for the large drop in earnings of lowwage Hispanics workers. Local Organizations Partner to Collect Signatures Nebraskans for better Wages and the Heartland Workers Center have partnered to collect over 300 signatures for the Minimum Wage Petition.

Volunteers, including Senator Jeremy Nordquist, started going door-to-door to spread awareness about the Minimum Wage Petition and talk to local community members about the benefits of raising the minimum wage. In addition to collecting signatures, volunteers talked to local community members about registering to vote and the upcoming general election in November.
