rban Abbey, una cafetería local situada en el centro de Omaha, estaba llena de miembros de las organizaciones no lucrativas locales, líderes comunitarios y estudiantes del área este lunes pasado. El sitio se llenó, todos esperando que la proyección de Documentado empezara. Urban Abbey, una cafetería local situada en el centro de Omaha, estaba llena de miembros de las organizaciones no lucrativas locales, líderes comunitarios y estudiantes del área este pasado lunes. El sitio se llenó, todos esperando que la proyección de Documentado empezara. Omaha Juntos Una Comunidad (OTOC, por sus siglas en inglés) y Nebraska Appleseed se juntaron para traer esta película al Urban Abbey. De acuerdo con la misión de OTOC “la gente está desconectada y las conversaciones sobre temas importantes son difíciles,” a través de la proyección de esta película OTOC y sus socios están animando a la gente en todo Omaha para conectarse y cruzar las líneas que los dividen. El tema de inmigración es un tema emocional pero muy importante para muchos y Documentado señaló las realidades del sistema de inmigración en los Estados Unidos y cómo una reforma migratoria integral es una necesidad urgente para muchos. La película narra la vida de José Antonio Vargas y la situación que llevó a este joven inmigrante a unirse a la lucha por la reforma migratoria. José Antonio Vargas, el director de Documentado, es un periodista ganador del Premio Pulitzer, director de cine y fundador de Define American. Definir americana es una campaña de medios sociales y cultura que alienta a la gente a tener conversaciones sobre inmigración y la ciudadanía en los Estados Unidos. Vargas ha jugado un papel importante en la promoción del diálogo sobre la reforma migratoria en los Estados Unidos. Durante la primera parte de la película Vargas habla de una experiencia traumática que tuvo en la escuela secundaria. A la edad de 16, Vargas intentó obtener una licencia. El DMV le dio la esplda después de informarle que sus documentos de identidad eran falsos. Después de regresar a su casa, Vargas enfrentó a su abuelo y se enteró que estaba en los Estados Unidos de manera ilegal. Aterrorizado de lo que me podría suceder.” Después de ver que los Soñadores declaraban su estatus en Facebook, YouTube, Twitter y otros medios de comunicación social, Vargas dijo que él comenzó a sentirse como un cobarde por su silencio. “Mi silencio ya no era soportable. No podía más sentarme en el banquillo. Tenía que hacer algo. Tuve que unirme a la lucha,” dijo Vargas. En 2011 Vargas comenzó a trabajar en un ensayo que luego sería impreso en The New York Times Magazine. En su ensayo titulado ‘Outlaw’, Vargas reveló su estatus como un inmigrante indocumentado. “He escrito cientos de artículos a lo largo de mi carrera,” dijo Vargas, quien agregó “esto era diferente, se trataba de algo personal.” Vargas quería provocar el diálogo sobre el sistema de inmigración en los Estados Unidos y quería animar a la gente a apoyar la Ley DREAM. El resto de la emocional película sigue a Vargas en su viaje a desmitificar los estereotipos sobre los inmigrantes y las medidas que ha tomado para impulsar la reforma integral. Vargas anima a otros a unirse a la lucha por la reforma migratoria. Este es un momento crítico para muchos inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos. Las familias están siendo separadas, las personas que fueron traídos a los Estados Unidos cuando eran niños son deportados a países que no conocen, y los inmigrantes siguen viviendo con miedo todos los días. LOCAL FILM SCREENING ENCOURAGES DIALOGUE OVER IMMIGRATION REFORM
he Urban Abbey, a local coffee shop located in the Old Market in downtown Omaha, was overflowing with members of local non-profits, community leaders, and area students just last Monday. People crowded in, all eagerly waiting for the screening of Documented to begin. Omaha Together One Community (OTOC) and Nebraska Appleseed partnered up to bring this film screening to the Urban Abbey. According to OTOC’s mission “people are often disconnected and conversations about important issues are difficult,” through this local film screening OTOC and this organizations partners are encouraging people all across Omaha to connect and to cross the lines that divide them. Immigration is a very important yet emotional subject for many and Documented pointed out the harsh realities of the broken immigration system in the United States and that comprehensive immigration reform is an urgent need for many. The film chronicles the life of Jose Antonio Vargas and how this young immigrant joined the fight for immigration reform. Jose Antonio Vargas, the director of Documented, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, filmmaker and founder of Define American. Define American is a media and culture campaign that encourages people to have conversations about immigration and citizenship in the United States. Vargas has played an important role in encouraging dialogue about immigration reform all over the United States. During the first section of the film Vargas talks about a traumatic experience he had in high school. At the age of 16 Vargas attempted to obtain a driver’s license. The DMV turned him away after informing him his identification documents were fake. After Vargas returned home and confronted his grandfather, he learned he was in the United States illegally. Vargas, an immigrant from the Philippines, began to struggle with his immigration status and often times wondered how it would hold his future back. Vargas finished out his years in high school, harboring his secret and only divulging it to a distinct few that would encourage him to pursue a higher education. After graduating from San Francisco State University Vargas became a successful journalist that has worked for The San Francisco Chronicle, the Huffington Post and Rolling Stone among other news outlets. Vargas’ team at The Washington Post won the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting in 2008. Eventually, Jose Antonio Vargas would eventually become a key activist and player in the fight for immigration reform. In the film Vargas said “I had hidden the fact that I was undocumented. Terrified of what might happen to me.” After watching DREAMers declare their status on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and
other social media outlets Vargas said that he began to feel like a coward because of his silence. “My silence was no longer bearable. I couldn’t sit on the sidelines anymore. I had to do something. I had t o join the fight,” said Vargas. In 2011 Vargas began working on an essay that would later be printed in The New York Times Magazine. In his essay titled ‘Outlaw’, revealed Vargas’ status as an undocumented immigrant. “I have written hundreds of articles throughout my career,” said Vargas, adding “this was different, this was personal.” Vargas wanted to spark dialogue about the broken immigration system in the United States and he wanted to encourage people to support the DREAM Act. He pointed out he had written this article not only for himself but for countless others who could not write this article themselves. Coming out as an undocumented immigrant was extremely hard for Vargas especially when some of his family members pointed out he was not only exposing himself but also them and their family secret. In Documented Vargas pointed out that there is currently no line to get into. Even if an immigrant wanted to fix their immigration status, it is extremely hard to do so when you have a system that doesn’t have a path to citizenship. The rest of the very emotional film follows Vargas on his journey to demystify the stereotypes about immigrants and the actions he has taken to push for comprehensive reform. Vargas encourages others to join the fight for immigration reform. This is a critical time for many immigrants across the United States. Families are being separated, people who were brought to the United States as children are being deported to countries they don’t know, and immigrants all over continue to live with fear each and every day. n grupo de líderes de la comunidad en Omaha se han unido para darle un lugar en la política a los latinos en Nebraska. “Los latinos necesitan una voz en la política,” dijo Athena Ramos. Ramos es actualmente la Coordinadora del Programa para el Centro para la Reducción de Disparidades de Salud en la Universidad de Nebraska Medical Center. Ramos, una voluntaria y activista en la comunidad desde hace mucho tiempo, dice que un grupo de miembros de la comunidad apasionados se juntaron hace unos nueve meses, y empezaron a hablar de cómo los latinos realmente pueden influir en las decisiones políticas y los resultados en el estado de Nebraska. Tras un breve debate, el grupo decidió crear el Comité de Acción Política para los Latinos en Nebraska (NLPAC, por sus siglas en inglés). NLPAC se estableció formalmente en enero de 2014. De hecho, el grupo buscará y apoyará a candidatos calificados con herencia Latina que realmente lucharán por temas latinos, una vez electos. El grupo también trabajará para informar a los que ya están en oficinas políticas sobre las diferentes posiciones de las comunidades latinas en los principales asuntos que los afectan. Según Ramos la educación también forma una parte importante de la misión del grupo. En conjunto, este grupo de
voluntarios desarrollará estrategias para ayudar a promover los intereses de los latinos en la zona. Según Ramos el grupo cree en “la promoción, la participación cívica y la acción social.” Ramos añadió que “esta es nuestra contribución para asegurar que nuestra comunidad tenga una voz en la mesa y vamos a luchar para que nuestro estado sea un mejor lugar para todos.” Ramos indicó que el grupo está actualmente en el proceso de desarrollar posiciones sobre temas politicos y también están trabajando en sus endosos para las próximas elecciones generales de noviembre. Uno de los objetivos de NLPAC es contribuir a las campañas de aquellos cuyas posiciones políticas mejorarían la vida de las familias en nuestras comunidades. El grupo tendrá que hacer su tarea para asegurarse de que estén apoyando a candidatos que están a favor de los latinos en temas como la reforma migratoria, educación, salud y empleo. Ramos anima a cualquier persona interesada en participar a ponerse en contacto con NLPAC. También señaló que hay otras maneras de involucrarse. “Animamos a todos los que sean elegibles a registrarse para votar. Los formularios de inscripción de votantes se pueden completar en la oficina del Secretario del Condado o en la oficina del Comisionado Electoral, DMV, o también pueden completar y enviar por correo el formulario ubicado en el sitio web del Secretaría de Estado,” dijo Ramos. El Comité de Acción Política para Latinos en Nebraska o Nebraska Latino/a Political Action Committee, quiere dar a los latinos una “clara influencia más fuerte en los asuntos de Nebraska,” dijo Ramos. group of community leaders in Omaha have joined together to give Latinos in Nebraska a place in state politics. “Latinos need a voice in politics,” said Athena Ramos. Ramos is currently the Program Coordinator for the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Ramos, a long-time community volunteer and activist, says that a group of passionate community members sat down for a meeting about nine months ago and started talking about how Latinos can really influence political decisions and outcomes in the state of Nebraska. After some discussion the group decided to create the Nebraska Latino/a Political Action Committee (NLPAC). NLPAC was formally established in January 2014. According to Ramos the NLPAC will provide the Latino/a community with “greater visibility, and a clearer, stronger influence in the affairs of Nebraska and those political subdivisions that affect their lives and those of their families.” “We were not satisfied with the status quo, and we wanted to make a difference in the lives of members of our community,” said Ramos. The community leader added “for too long, the Latino community has been seen, but not heard in elections and political issues.” Ramos points out that the strength and political power of Latinos all across the United States has been taken for granted. Although many believe that the Latino community is just interested in immigration reform, Ramos points out that it is more complicated than that for Latinos. “The Latino community is not a single issue community. We care about many issues from healthcare, to education, to economic growth, as well as human and civil rights. We realize that money is power and organized money is even more powerful in determining the issues, the messages, and the outcomes of politics,” clarified Ramos. Ramos and her colleagues will aim to address all of these issues through the NLPAC. In fact, the group will seek out and support qualified candidates of Latino/a heritage that will really fight for Latinos issues once elected to office. The group will also work to inform those already in office about the positions Latino communities take on

major issues affecting them. According to Ramos education is also an important part of the group’s mission. They will focus some of their efforts on empowering young Latinos/as by educating them on the issues and encouraging them to register to vote. Members of the board of directors for the NLPAC include Ramos, Sergio Sosa, Abbie Kretz, and Christian Espinosa from the Heartland Workers Center, and local community members Maria Vasquez and Elisha Novak. Together, this group of volunteers will develop strategies to help promote the interests of Latinos in the area. According to Ramos the group believes in “advocacy, civic engagement, and social action.” Ramos adds “this is our contribution to ensuring that our community has a voice at the table and is a part of making our state a better place for all.” Ramos indicated the group is currently in the process of developing positions on current issues and they are also working on their endorsements for the upcoming general election in November. One of the PAC’s goals is to contribute to the campaigns of those whose political positions would improve the lives of families in our communities. The group will have to do their homework to make sure they are supporting candidates that will support Latinos on issues such as immigration reform, education, healthcare, and employment. Ramos encourages anyone interested in getting involved to contact the NLPAC. She also pointed out there are other ways to get involved. “We encourage everyone who is eligible to register to vote. Voter registration forms can be completed at the county clerk or election commissioner’s office, DMV, or by completing and mailing in the form located on the Secretary of State’s website,” said Ramos. The Nebraska Latino/a Political Action Committee (NLPAC) wants to give Latinos a “clearer, stronger influence in the affairs of Nebraska,” said Ramos. It is important to encourage Latinos in Nebraska to speak up and get involved in the political process. This will give Latinos a place and voice at the table.

LA MIRADA ESPAÑOLA DETRÁS DE UNA LENTE JUVENIL Y DIVERTIDA

“R
econozco que desde muy pequeñín ya estaba dando alardes de que me gustaba el arte, porque me encantaba dibujar y crear mis propias cosas”, explicó Álvaro Poveda Oropesa, quien confesó que la idea de dedicarse profesionalmente a la fotografía “surgió justo cuando terminé la carrera de ilustración y diseño gráfico en mi país, y me interesé mucho por la animación y el cómic”. Poveda, quien nació en Madrid, la capital española, comenzó por aquellos años a crear una historia que requería de diversos escenarios: “Mi idea era que fuera algo así como una novela gráfica y pensé que sería más fácil si me compraba una cámara tipo réflex (más o menos decente), para así poder fotografiar la ciudad. Mi intención era usar dichas imágenes combinadas con los personajes, lo que me permitiría ahorrar tiempo ya que no tendría que dibujar tanto”. Fue entonces que el joven artista español adquirió su primer equipo fotográfico: “Ahora que lo pienso, puede que lo de dedicarme a la fotografía ya lo trajera conmigo de manera inconsciente, porque mi padre tenía en casa una cámara Pentax de carrete, que no muy seguido me dejaba utilizar por ser una cámara más cara, pero con la cual me llegó a enseñar alguna que otra cosita, lo que me sirvió cuando compré la mía. Después, y casi sin querer, empecé a jugar con la fotografía y como me encantó, simplemente me dije, ¡vamos a intentarlo!”. La ventaja fue que aún siendo estudiante, Poveda ya se había abierto camino en el campo del diseño gráfico y le comenzaban a llegar buenos clientes: “Como trabajaba en un restaurante, conocía a muchas personas que luego se acercaban a mi para pedirme que les hiciera ilustraciones, logos o storyboards, y eso me permitió tener más experiencia como fotógrafo free-lance”. Lo que luego pasó es como el capítulo de alguna hermosa novela, puesto que Poveda conoció a la americana Jaclyn Ostronic mientras ella trabajaba y estudiaba en España: “Nos enamoramos, nos casamos y finalmente decidimos venirnos a Nebraska para probar suerte”. Juntos fundaron la empresa Visión O. Photography and Digital Design, y en marzo de este año abrieron un estudio en Omaha: “Me gustó mucho este edificio porque tiene bastantes habitaciones muy lindas con mucha luz natural, con backgrounds bastante bonitos que hacen las fotos más interesantes y con muchos elementos (escenografías, muebles, decoraciones) que

puedo mover cada vez que lo necesite. Además, comparto el espacio con otras fotógrafas, todas ellas excelentes artistas”. La meta de Poveda es conquistar al mercado hispano de la ciudad: “Porque estoy seguro de poder ofrecerles un servicio completamente profesional, pero a un precio accesible. Sé por experiencia que a veces uno paga mucho por las fotografías. A mi me pasó con las fotografías de mi boda, y por ello quiero darle a la comunidad hispana precios económicos, eso sí, entregándoles imágenes de excelente calidad”. Actualmente Poveda se mantiene ocupado fotografiando, por ejemplo, a los estudiantes que están por graduarse, tomando las imágenes para los anuales escolares, y haciendo todo tipo de retratos artísticos: “Mi especialidad es disparar las fotos afuera, en escenarios naturales. Cuando una persona nos contacta para tomar sus fotos, por decir en el caso de las fotografías de boda, primero tenemos una cita previa para mostrarles mi portafolio y ver si le agrada mi trabajo. Si es un retrato me gusta darle al cliente de tres horas en adelante para poder probar tanto en interiores como exteriores, las diferentes luces, jugar con los flashes y cambiar los lentes de la cámara. Algo muy importante es que antes de que nuestros clientes nos den el sí para hacer sus fotos, nosotros siempre intentamos involucrarnos más y conocer cuáles son sus gustos, por lo que les mandamos una forma por email donde nos dejan saber muchos detalles, lo que facilita nuestro trabajo”. Para Poveda es una experiencia “genial y maravillosa” el trabajar al lado de Jackie, su esposa: “Ella se encarga de la publicidad de nuestro website, y me encanta porque ambos estamos aprendiendo muchísimo juntos”. A pesar que cada vez se populariza más el tomar imágenes con un celular en eventos familiares, “el trabajo de un fotógrafo profesional siempre va a ser requerido, ya que aunque las fotos se vean bien en la pequeña pantalla del móvil, a la hora de imprimir ésas imágenes, las fotos nunca serán de la misma calidad”. Evento local un éxito El Centro Latino recientemente patrocinó la cena Destino. El evento incluyó una exitosa subasta, una sesión para probar tequilas diferentes, música en vivo y una cena. La estudiante local, Tania Moreno, habló en el evento. Moreno indicó que el trabajo del Centro Latino ayuda a muchos estudiantes de la zona. Ella recibió una beca del Centro Latino el año pasado. Actualmente es estudiante en Metropolitan Community College. Ella está en camino de convertirse en un diseñadora gráfica. Gracias al programa de absentismo escolar ofrecido en el Centro Latino, Moreno y otros estudiantes locales están mejorando su asistencia en la escuela y se están involucrando con la comunidad como voluntarios. Hazte voluntario El Centro Laboral, una organización sin fines de lucro local, está buscando voluntarios para ayudar en Omaha con la educación del público en general, sobre las próximas elecciones. El Centro Laboral patrocinará sesiones donde voluntarios hablarán con personas en la zona por teléfono. Además, también tocarán las puertas de casas en la zona. Victory Boxing Club and Community Center will be hosting their 3rd annual “Still Swinging” golf tournament on Saturday, August 23 at Miracle Hill Golf Club located at 1401 North 120th Street. I
acknowledge that since I was little I always said I loved art because I really liked to draw and to do my own thing,” said Alvaro Poveda Oropesa, adding that working as a photographer “came to be after I had finished studying illustration and graphic design back at my home country, and I was very interested in animation and comic books.” Poveda was born in Madrid and back then he started to create a story that required several scenarios: “My idea was that it could be like a graphic novel because I thought it would be easier if I bought a reflex-style camera (more or less a decent one), so that I could photograph the city. My intention was to use said images and combine them with my characters, thus saving me some time since I wouldn’t have to draw so much.” It was then that the young Spanish artist bought his first equipment for photography: “Now that I think about it, it might be that working on photography was part of my subconscious, because my father had a Pentax reel camera at home that he sometimes let me use, because it was very expensive, but this taught me a few things and it helped me when I bought my own camera. Later, without really focusing on it, I started to take pictures and I loved it, so I simply went with it by saying ‘let’s try it!’” The advantage was that, even when he was a student, Poveda had already opened his way into the graphic design field and he had started to land some very good clients: “Since I worked at a restaurant, I knew a lot of people that would later approach me to ask if I could d some illustrations, logos or storyboards for them, and this allowed me to gain more experience as a freelance photographer.” What happened next is almost like a chapter in a beautiful novel because Poveda met Jaclyn Ostronic while she was working and studying in Spain: “We fell in love, got married and finally decided to come to Nebraska to try our luck.” Together they founded Vision O. Photography and Digital Design, and on March of this year they opened a studio in Omaha: “I really liked this building because it has many lovely rooms with a lot of natural light as well as some beautiful backgrounds that help to create interesting photographs with many elements (scenery, furniture,

I also share this space with other photographers and they’re all great artists.” Poveda’s goal is to conquer the Latino demographic in the city: “I’m sure I can offer a completely professional service at an affordable price. I know from experience that sometimes one ends up paying a lot for photographs. It happened to me with my wedding pictures, and this is why I want to bring affordable prices for the Latino community while still delivering images of excellent quality.” Nowadays Poveda keeps himself busy, taking pictures of students that are graduating, photographing moments for school yearbooks and creating all kinds of artistic images: “My specialty is to shoot images outside, in natural scenarios. When someone contacts me so that I can take their pictures for, say, their wedding, we first schedule an appointment so that I can present my portfolio and see if they like my work. If I’m working on a portrait, I like to give a client around three hours or more in order to test several locations, different lighting, playing with different flash lighting and also by changing the camera lenses. It is very important that before our clients say yes, that we have a chance to be very involved so that we can get to know their tastes and what they like, which is why we send them a questionnaire by email so that they can let us know about many of said details, thus making our job easier.” For Poveda, working with Jackie, his wife, is a “great and marvelous” experience: “She handles advertising as well as our website, and I love it because we’re both learning a lot together.” And even though taking pictures with a cellphone is more and more popular at family events “the work of a professional photographer will always be needed because, even though the images might look good at that small screen, when it is time to print them the quality will never be the same.” Alvaro Poveda Oropesa / Photographer Vision O. Metro Young Latino Professionals Association was formed in 2009 to have a young collective voice in the community that represents young Latino point-ofviews. The organization today is a multi-cultural, multi-generational group of Latino/Non-Latino professionals representing individuals across the Omaha Metro area. MYLPA creates a dynamic environment for members to thrive by fostering leadership, mentoring, education, networking and new Hispanic initiatives. In 2012 MYLPA’s commitment to education and giving back to the community offered to assist the Heartland Latino Leadership Conference with their fundraising efforts to provide additional student scholarships. This spawned the idea of holding an annual fundraising event during the summer’s months. MYLPA held its first ever a family Summer Bash event on the lakes of Offutt Air Force and raised $3,000.00 for HLLC. In 2013, MYLPA hosted “2012 TIME Magazine’s The Most Influential Person in the World” Dulce Matuz. MYLPA was able to raise $9,000.00 towards their scholarship fund to assist student DREAMERS. The Metro Young Latinos Professionals Association presents “Una Noche Tropical with Mambo DeLeon” 3rd Annual Fundraising event. Join us on August 1st at Field Club of Omaha, 3615 Woolworth Ave. from 6:00pm-11:00pm. You will have the opportunity to enjoy an elegant evening that includes networking, dinner, and dance with the Salsa King of the Midwest, Mambo DeLeon. $5.00 Raffle tickets may be purchased at the event.
