MYLPA SE CONSOLIDA EN OMAHA LA TERCERA COLECTA ANUAL PARA BECAS EDUCATIVAS RESULTÓ UN LOGRO MÁS PARA LA ASOCIACIÓN DE JÓVENES PROFESIONISTAS LATINOS DEL AREA METROPOLITANA
P
or tercer año consecutivo se realizó la colecta anual que organiza la Asociación de Jóvenes Profesionistas Latinos del Area Metropolitana, y logró una excelente respuesta comunitaria en participación física y en donación de fondos. Aunque sus inicios se remontan al 2009, no fue sino hasta el 2012 que la directiva de esta joven organización decidió hacer algo para apoyar a la población estudiantil de la región, y lograr mejores oportunidades de preparación y motivación para una vida profesional. Así, surgió la propuesta de acercarse a la directiva que maneja la Conferencia de Liderazgo Latino de la Zona Central (HLLC por siglas en inglés), para encontrar apoyo en los esfuerzos para recaudar fondos anualmente, para poder otorgar becas para estudiantes interesados en participar de la citada conferencia. Un hecho que la HLLC aprobó festivamente. Para su primer actividad enfocada a esta finalidad, esperaron hasta los meses del verano para poder realizar un evento familiar veraniego, lo que les significó la colecta de $3,000 dólares. Para el segundo año, sorprendieron con los resultados. En primer lugar, por el monto económico que lograron recaudar, ya que triplicaron los resultados, alcanzando la cifra de $9,000 dólares. En segundo termino estuvo la credibilidad que alcanzaron a nivel local, luego de haber conseguido que la invitada de honor a su evento fuera Dulce Matuz, considerada por la revista TIME como la persona más influyente en el mundo, en su edición del 2012. Es de mencionar que Matuz aceptó también ser la oradora principal del evento. Este voto de confianza fue para MYLPA un energizante social que les presentó como un grupo fuerte, solido y profesional, que podía obtener la respuesta positiva de personalidades como la mencionada. Por otro lado, se optó también por cambiar el rumbo del dinero colectado. De tal suerte que este fue canalizado para pagar todos los gastos educativos, por un año entero, a 2 estudiantes de la Universidad Comunitaria Metropolitana. Hoy, en este 2014, su tercera colecta tuvo diversas sorpresas y aunque hasta la fecha de esta publicación no se ha dado a conocer el monto de lo colectado, si es catalogada como todo un éxito, por miembros de su directiva e invitados presentes. En este punto, la gerencia del club Field de Omaha, donde se realizó el evento, reportó un lleno total en sus instalaciones.

Por otro lado, también asombró a muchos que le han seguido los pasos a MYLPA, que su directiva no realizara la misma fórmula que le dió tan buenos resultados el pasado año. Es decir, no fue a la misma hora, ni en el mismo lugar, ni tampoco contó con un conferencista estelar. Lo que se orquestó este 2014 fue un evento de gala, el cual fue amenizado por música tropical, emanada del grupo internacional llamado Mambo de León. “Esperamos juntar más de 5 mil dólares, con lo cual estaremos en posibilidades de ayudar al doble de estudiantes que el año pasado”, dijo Silvia Almanza, actual presidenta de MYLPA, y agregó: “Nuestro objetivo es poder subir el número de becas que demos cada año, con lo cual sentiremos que estamos devolviendo algo de lo mucho que hemos recibido de nuestra comunidad”. Cabe subrayar que las becas entregadas por MYLPA están canalizadas para “Soñadores”, quienes pueden aplicar el primero de marzo próximo en la Universidad Comunitaria Metropolitana, donde se podrá ver también los lineamientos de dicha ayuda, lo mismo que en el sitio web www.mylpa.com Actualmente, MYLPA es un grupo multicultural y multigeneracional de profesionales latinos y no latinos, a cargo de representar a personas de toda el área metropolitana de Omaha. Su misión principal es la de tener una voz colectiva juvenil que represente el punto de opinión emanado de la juventud latina. Participar con ellos es encontrarse inmerso en un entorno dinámico y amigable, donde los participantes pueden prosperar en su búsqueda por desarrollar su liderazgo, aunado a la promoción de tutoría y educación. Por otro lado, ahí también se crean redes de conexión profesional, social y de participación comunitaria, lo que permite enterarse de las nuevas iniciativas hispanas. Resumiendo, a cinco años de existencia, MYLPA es ya una solida opción de apoyo juvenil estudiantil, surgido de la colecta anual que ha estado realizado exitosamente durante los últimos tres años. Al respecto, vale la pena citar las palabras textuales que durante el evento emitió su directora, Silvia Almanza: “Creemos en los resultados que se logra de ‘Influir en Un Estudiante a la Vez’, creemos también en la educación superior y sobre todo creemos que todos merecen la oportunidad de perseguir sus sueños e ir a la universidad. Por ello, queda un agradecimiento a los participantes a este evento del 2014, porque con ello vamos a ser capaces de ofrecer nuevamente becas educativas a los jóvenes de nuestra localidad”.

THE THIRD ANNUAL FUNDRAISING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS WAS A GREAT SUCCESS FOR THE METRO YOUNG LATINO PROFESSIONALS ASSOCIATION Por Bernardo Montoya
F
or the third year in a row, the Metro Young Latino Professionals Association worked on an annual fundraiser, managing to encourage the community to participate and donate funds to their cause. Even though it started back in 2009, it wasn’t until 2012 that the board of this young organization decided to do something to support students in the region so that they can better prepare themselves and be motivated for a career. This is how the idea came to life to approach the board of the Heartland Latino Leadership Conference (HLLC) to help with their yearly efforts to secure funds to grant scholarships to the students interested in participating at said conference, something that the HLLC definitely liked. For their first activity towards this goal, they waited until the summer to work on an event for all families, and this helped them raise $3,000. For the second year, they got amazing results. They managed to triple the amount by reaching $9,000 in funds, and they improved their credibility after Dulce Matuz, considered by TIME magazine as the most influential person in the world in their 2012 edition, was the guest of honor for the event. We must mention that Matuz also accepted to be the main speaker for the event. This vote of confidence allowed MYLPA to show to the community it was a strong, solid and professional group that could manage to get the support of important people. On the other hand, it was decided to change the way the funds were used, and this meant that two students from the Metropolitan Community College received enough funds to pay for their educational expenses for a whole year. In 2014, their third fundraising had many surprises and, even though (at the date of this article) the final amount is not known, the event has been called a success, both by the organization’s board and by guests at the event. The management at the Field Club of Omaha, where the event took place, reported that their installations were completely full during said event. For those following the activities of MYLPA, it did feel a bit odd that the board did not follow the same formula that
had already provided great results in previous years. It was not held at the same place or at the same time, and it didn’t have a famous main speaker either. The event for 2014 was a gala that featured the talent of international band Mambo de Leon as its musical guest, allowing everyone to enjoy the tropical tunes from their repertoire. “We hope to raise over $5,000 since this would allow us to help twice as many students as we did last year,” said Silvia Almanza, current president of MYLPA. She added: “Our goal is to be able to increase the number of scholarships we grant each year since we feel we are giving back just a bit of everything we’ve received from our community.” We must highlight that the scholarships granted by MYLPA are provided for “Dreamers,” who can apply during March 1st at the Metropolitan Community College, where they can learn more about said help, or they can also check said information at www.mylpa.com MYLPA is a multicultural and multigenerational group of Latino and non-Latino professionals in charge of representing people from the metropolitan area of Omaha. Their main mission is to present a collective voice that represents the point of view of the Latino youth. Participating with this organization means working in a dynamic and friendly environment where people can prosper and aim towards developing their leadership skills as they promote tutoring and education. It is also a great way to network both at a professional and social level, as well as of working with the community to know everything there is to know about new Latino initiatives. Five years after starting, MYLPA is now a solid option for supporting young students thanks to the yearly fundraising that has been such a hit over the last three years. On that note, Silvia Almanza had this to say: “We believe in the results from ‘Influencing One Student at a Time,’ we believe in higher education and we believe that everyone deserves a chance to pursue their dreams and go to college. Because of this, I want to thank everyone that participated at our 2014 event, because thanks to your support we’ll be able to offer scholarships to young members of our community.”

Pineda OMAHA RECIBE CON AGRADO A
JENIFFER MISS EL SALVADOR 2014 Por Marina Rosado
E
l sábado 12 de julio, la entusiasta comunidad salvadoreña de Omaha celebró la coronación de la hermosa Jennifer Lisseth Pineda Castillo, quien recibió el título de “Miss El Salvador 2014”. “Estaba muy nerviosa y no pensé que iba a ganar - expresó la joven de 22 años -, y me emocioné muchísimo porque es la primera vez que tengo una corona en mi cabeza. El haber ganado este concurso es algo muy importante para mí, ya que no sólo se trata de obtener un título de belleza, porque al ganar adquieres un compromiso muy grande con la comunidad donde participas. Así que ahora espero que esto me sirva para poder ayudar a mucha gente”. Originaria de Sonsonate, El Salvador, Pineda llegó a los Estados Unidos a la edad de 9 años: “Mi padre nació en El Salvador pero como había vivido casi toda su vida en este país, se hizo ciudadano muy rápido y pudo traernos para acá a mí, a mi mamá y a mis hermanos mayores”. Su participación en el certamen organizado por la Asociación Cívica Salvadoreña de Nebraska se dió casi por casualidad: “Karla, mi mejor amiga, fue quien me registró. Ella sabía que yo quería ponerme un reto, algo difícil que nunca hubiera hecho, así que me dijo que lo intentara”. Este es el primer evento de su tipo, organizado por el señor Carlos Martínez y sus compañeros representantes de dicha asociación: Ana Barrios, Olga Delgado, Irma López, Isaías Ceros Santamaría, Elmer Cerano, Gloria Santamaría y Ednna Ceros. La preparación de las alegres participantes estuvo a cargo del coreógrafo Héctor Moreno. “Él es un gran maestro, aproximadamente desde abril comenzamos nuestra preparación a su lado, ensayando cada domingo durante unas seis horas. Durante ése tiempo nos aprendimos los bailes, tomamos diferentes clases y estuvimos saliendo a la Calle 24, para platicar con las personas y conocer cuáles eran sus opiniones sobre lo que estaba sucediendo en el país en este momento”, comentó Pineda. La celebración tuvo lugar en el Millenium Hall de la ciudad, donde las aspirantes al título mostraron su talento compartiendo detalles interesantes sobre sus lugares de origen y bailando una popular canción alusiva al Carnaval de San Miguel, y otra más titulada “Las cortadoras”, mientras portaban vistosos atuendos típicos salvadoreños. Pineda explico que “en El Salvador hay muchas tradiciones y fiestas lindas como ésa, yo he visitado mi país unas cuatro veces, ya que por estar en la

escuela no puedo viajar mucho, y tengo muy buenos recuerdos ya que todavía tenemos mucha familia allá y en especial me acuerdo mucho de mi abuelita. Nosotros somos una familia que viene del campo y extraño mucho el estar al aire libre, rodeada de la naturaleza, el ver los árboles de mango y de coco como en el caminito que hay a la entrada de la casa de mi abuelita”. Pineda recién se graduó de la carrera de enfermería del College of Saint Mary: “Desde que llegamos a este país hemos vivido en Council Bluffs (Iowa) y mis padres siempre me han impulsado para que estudie. En El Salvador tengo una tía que es licenciada y me dicen que me parezco mucho a ella, así que antes pensaba que quizás estudiaría para ser abogada pero preferí esta profesión porque en El Salvador mi abuelo tenía artritis. Y aunque no recuerdo muy bien todo lo que le pasó, porque yo estaba muy pequeña, sé que murió por un descuido médico. Así que mi sueño es llegar a ser una enfermera practicante, voy a tomar mi exámen para registrarme en el estado y trabajar en los hospitales para ayudar a toda la gente. Por el momento trabajo en la clínica One World que es un lugar maravilloso porque se interesa mucho por la comunidad hispana de Omaha, así que diariamente veo a muchos de mis paisanos atendiéndose ahí”. La noche que Pineda se convirtió en Miss El Salvador 2014, portaba un espectacular vestido azul de la boutique Modest Bride y con un precioso ramo de rosas cortesía de la señora Ana Orellana, desfiló majestuosa por la pasarela. “Es cierto que la corona es sólo de una, pero aquí todas somos ganadoras ya que nos llevamos muchos conocimientos que nos van a acompañar toda la vida y por eso espero que el próximo año más chicas se animen a concursar, ya que van a poder conocer mucho más de su cultura. Yo aprendí muchísimo sobre cosas que antes no sabía por haber crecido acá. Esta es una experiencia muy bonita porque la compartes con chicas de tu mismo país, y te diviertes mucho. Por ejemplo, nosotras estábamos felices hablando caliche, que es la manera propia de hablar de los salvadoreños”. Al momento de esta entrevista, Pineda dijo estar “muy agradecida con el apoyo de mi madre Elvira Castillo, y de mi hermana Marisol Pineda”, al igual que planeaba su presentación en el festival del Día del Salvadoreño Americano el día 3 de agosto a conmemorarse afuera de la Iglesia de San José con la participación del consulado salvadoreño.

Nebraska Appleseed will be hosting the 2014 Good Apple Awards. The purpose of the event is to honor local Nebraskans who stand up for justice and equal opportunities for all. The event will take place at the Livestock Exchange building Ballroom located at 4920 Ssouth 30th Street in Omaha on Thursday, October 2. The social hour will start at 6 p.m. and the program and ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. Nebraska Appleseed is a non-profit organization that fights for justice and opportunity for all Nebraskans. The organization works on a variety of issues that include child welfare, immigration policy, poverty and affordable healthcare. Report over unaccompanied minors released
The Pew Research Center recently released a report indicating that children 12 and under are the fastest growing group of unaccompanied minors at the U.S and Mexican border. According to the data there has been an increase of 117 percent in the number of unaccompanied children ages 12 and younger that have been caught at the border this fiscal year. The same report pointed out that older children are still crossing the border. However, the increase for teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 is only 12 percent for this fiscal year. This report is based on government data that has not been released to the general public. The Pew Research Center was able to request this information through a Freedom of Information Act request. n Saturday, July 12, the enthusiastic Salvadoran community at Omaha celebrated the coronation of beautiful Jennifer Lisseth Pineda Castillo as “Miss El Salvador 2014.” “I was very nervous and I didn’t think I was going to win,” said the young 22-year-old, “and I was very excited about having the crown on my head. Winning this contest is very important to me because it’s not just about winning a beauty contest. Winning means committing to the community. So I hope I can use this to help a lot of people.” Pineda, originally from Sonsonate, El Salvador, arrived at the United States when she was 9 years old: “My father was born in El Salvador, but since he had lived here for most of his life he quickly became a citizen and was able to bring my mom, my older brothers and myself over here.” Her participation at the pageant organized by the Salvadoran Civil Organization in Nebraska was almost by chance: “Karla, my best friend, was the one that entered me into the pageant. She knew I wanted to challenge myself by doing something I had never done before, and she said I should try it.” This is the first event of its kind, organized by Carlos Martinez along with Ana Barrios, Olga Delgado, Irma Lopez, Isaias Ceros Santamaria, Elmer Cerano, Gloria Santamaria and Ednna Ceros, who represent the aforementioned organization. Choreographer Hector Moreno was the one in charge of preparing the cheerful contestants: “He’s a great teacher, and we started to prepare for this with him around April, rehearsing every Sunday for about six hours. During that time we learned all the dances, took several classes and even went out to 24th Street to talk to people to get to know their opinions about what was going on in the country.” The celebration took place at the Millenium Hall, where all contestants showed their talents while also sharing some interesting facts about their hometowns. They all danced to a song from the San Miguel Carnival, as well as to another one called “Las cortadoras” while using colorful Salvadoran outfits: “At El Salvador, there are many traditions and fiestas such as this one. I’ve visited the country about four times (since I can’t travel

much because of school), and I have great memories about it since we still have several relatives over there, and I lovingly remember my grandma among them. We are a family from a farm and I really miss that. I miss being surrounded by nature, watching the mango and coconut trees on the little road at the entrance of my grandma’s house.” Pineda recently graduated as a nurse from the College of Saint Mary: “Ever since we arrived at this country we have lived at Council Bluffs (Iowa), and my parents have always encouraged me to study. At El Salvador we have an aunt who is a lawyer and they say I look a lot like her so at first I thought that maybe I would study to become a lawyer, but I decided to study to become a nurse because back at El Salvador my grandfather had arthritis. Even though I don’t remember all that happened (because I was very young), I do know he died because of a medical error. Therefore my dream is to become a licensed nurse (I’ll be taking the test to register at my state), in order to work at hospitals to help people. For now I’m working at the One World which is a wonderful place that cares a lot about the Latino community in Omaha, which is why I see members of the community there every day.” The night on which Pineda became Miss El Salvador 2014, she was wearing a stunning blue dress from Modest Bride along with a lovely rose bouquet, courtesy of Ana Orellana: “It is true that only one of us gets to wear the crown, but we are all winners since we’ve all learned a lot, and I hope that more girls enter the pageant next year since it will help them learn more about their culture. I learned a lot about many things I didn’t know before because I grew up over here. This is a wonderful experience since you get to share it with many girls from your home country, and you have a lot of fun. For example, we were happy as we talked caliche, which is the way we Salvadorans talk.” Pineda also had this to say: “I’m very thankful for the support of my mother Elvira Castillo, and of my sister Marisol Pineda.” For now, she’s planning to be part of the Salvadoran-American Day on August 3, which will be celebrated at the Church of San Jose with the help of the Salvadoran consulate.
