El Grito
L
a Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Nebraska realizó su evento denominado “El Grito”, en las inmediaciones de la Plaza de la Raza. Un evento que al paso del tiempo se ha ido modificándo en su objetivo por celebrar la Independencia de México, pero que de manera objetiva permitió un espacio de esparcimiento y vendimia para las familias y comercios de la periferia. Fueron dos días de actividad los que en esta ocasión se abarcaron, teniendo como distintivo implantar un despliegue de juegos mecánicos por un largo perímetro de la calle 24, aunado a todo un cerco en la Plaza de la Raza que permitió convertirla en un área gigante para el consumo de bebidas alcohólicas, lo que accedió a que su venta no se limitara a espacios más cerrados. Esta fue una oportunidad perfecta para que ciertas organizaciones, dependencias y empresas expusieran sus servicios públicos, aunado al espacio que se brindó a grupos de artistas locales, quienes demostraran su talento artístico en torno a este festejo. Abiut Arcos, Director Ejecutivo de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Nebraska, reportó que el evento no generó ningún incidente, y dejó pendiente el número de asistentes que se logró al final del mismo. Positivamente, Arcos expuso lo siguiente: “La gente disfrutó del primer grito de la nueva cónsul [Guadalupe Sánchez Salazar], de Rosendo Robles, de Alejandra Rebolledo, de los Supremos de Linares, de los Sementales de Nuevo León... En fin, la gente se la pasó a todo dar compartiendo un buen fin de semana disfrutando con la familia y amigos de este evento, el cual ya es una tradición del sur de Omaha por parte de la cámara”. Paradójicamente, Tony Vega, fundador de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Nebraska e integrante del grupo pionero que desarrolló la primera celebración de “El Grito”, en el 2006, no fue tan positivo en sus evaluaciones. Vega dijo: “La gente será la que determine si el evento se realizó bien o mal porque en este momento tenemos puntos de vista diferentes de personas que analizan los resultados, observando ángulos diferentes. Ahora bien, como organización nos interesa mucho saber la opinión de la comunidad y de los comerciantes, y definitivamente necesitamos hacer una reunión entre la junta directiva de la cámara y la contra parte que fue contratada para realizar el evento, en este caso Marcos Mora de Latino Productions [LatPro]”. Vega aplaudió el trabajo de Mora, indicando que la cámara le contrató a muy corto tiempo de que se realizara el evento, y esto debido a que “... las personas dentro de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Nebraska no tenían el compromiso de sacar el evento e incluso hubo quienes dejaron las cosas en camino, lo cual nos hizo tomar medidas de emergencia para salir adelante”. Para Vega, esta experiencia dejó en claro que, para el futuro, “el compromiso que se establezca con la persona que tome el control del evento debe ser integral y debe llevarse a cabo hasta el término de la celebración”. Duramente, Tony Vega expresó: “Creo que se está perdiendo el sentido cívico, patriótico y festivo de la celebración de la Independencia de México en El Grito. Por eso, lo importante en este momento es que rescatemos la esencia del evento”. Vega corroboró haber participado en la primera celebración de El Grito, y dijo que la misión y visión estaba encaminada a “celebrar

la máxima fiesta mexicana para dar a conocer en Omaha que la independencia de México es el 15 de septiembre y no el 5 de mayo, lo cual no es un acto para menospreciar ningún evento, sino para enaltecer esta fecha patria. Para mí era una alegría ver que en otros festejos de El Grito la gente llegaba con banderas, vestuario típico o con colores alusivos al evento, y esto es algo que se debe rescatar”. Al analizar el porqué el evento de El Grito “ha cambiado en los pocos años que lleva de operación y está decreciendo”, según lo expuesto por uno de sus fundadores, Vega indicó que es por la diversidad y múltiples nacionalidades de las personas que están conformando actualmente la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Nebraska, a quienes debemos un ámplio reconocimiento a su colaboración y entrega voluntaria, sin embargo, no les podemos convencer o motivar para lograr otro tipo de evento más adecuado a lo que es una auténtica fiesta del grito, porque ellos desconocen cuál es el sentir del mexicano en esta fecha”. Actualmente, Vega es el único mexicano en la junta directiva de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana,”...y tengo que encontrar eco en otras personas para pensar en una estrategia que nos permita hacer algo diferente para el próximo año, no por menospreciar el trabajo que hoy se hizo, pues mucha gente lo disfrutó y hubo comerciantes favorecidos. Si no hubiera un historial del evento, definitivamente se puede decir que fue un buen evento, que atrajo gente y generó derrama económica, pero sabiendo que hay una historia y números que se han logrado, y componentes que se habían estado sumando al paso del tiempo, entonces descubrimos que tenemos un reto muy grande por hacer algo más haya de lo que ha ocurrido este año”. Curiosamente, desde los inicios del evento de El Grito, la mayoría de las personas que han impulsado dicha celebración son de nacionalidad distinta a la mexicana, lo cual denota la voluntad y pasión que se ha tenido por parte de quienes en su momento han formado parte de la organización del festejo. Ahora bien, la planeación de estrategias alternas, como el integrar un comité de fomento a las tradiciones patrias que en su mayoría este conformado por mexicanos y que incluso sea un comité integrado a la Cámara de Comercio Hispana para sumar esfuerzos, es una de las prontas soluciones aportadas por el que fuera también director de dicho gremio, Tony Vega. “Anhelo que nuevamente podamos contar con la participación de otros países, como ya ocurrió en el pasado, para que esta fiesta nos permita unirnos como hermanos latinoamericanos. Será interesante rescatar la idea de un evento familiar y cultural, incluso cuidar que el escenario del evento sea digno para el público y los artistas, lo cual nos permita abrir un espacio apropiado para todos los mexicanos y latinoamericanos que se quieran sumar al festejo”. Finalmente, Vega aplaudió la dedicación de toda la junta directiva que actualmente preside la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Nebraska, precedida por el puertorriqueño Nelson Idelfonso, aunado al trabajo realizado por Marco Mora. De esta forma, concluyó la novena celebración del evento El Grito, en el sur de Omaha, dejando en claro que su existencia es ya “una tradición en la ciudad”, tal como apuntara Abiut Arcos, razón por la cual se aplaude un año más de ejecución, dejando al mismo tiempo acentuada la necesidad de implementar acciones que le permitan una mayor vistosidad y crecimiento, al considerar el potencial y alcance social que esta fiesta implica.

he Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event called “El Grito,” which took place at Plaza de la Raza. Over the last few years, this event has changed little by little, expanding on the main goal of celebrating Mexican Independence Day, allowing families to gather to celebrate and check all the stores and booths close to the event. El Grito took place over two days, with a wide range of mechanical rides available on 24th St., and a fence was placed around Plaza de la Raza in order to allow alcoholic beverages to be served, thus not limiting its sale to the restaurants in the area. This event was the perfect opportunity for several organizations and businesses to present their services to the public, and it was also of great help for showcasing the talent of several local artists who decided to join the celebrations. Abiut Arcos, executive director for the Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, reported that there were no incidents at the event and that he was still waiting for a final figure for the event’s attendance. Arcos had this to say: “People enjoyed the first grito with the consul [Guadalupe Sanchez Salazar], Rosendo Robles, Alejandra Rebolledo, the Supremos de Linares, and the Sementales de Nuevo León. In the end, people had a good time over the weekend enjoying the event with family and friends, as has been a tradition in South Omaha.” On the other hand, Tony Vega, founder of the Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and member of the pioneer group that worked on the first El Grito celebration in 2006, was not as positive. “People are the ones who will determine if the event was good or bad, because right now we have conflictive views from those analyzing the results from different angles. As an organization we are interested in knowing what the community has to say, as well as what business owners think of it all. We definitely need to have a meeting to the board of directors and with Marcos Mora of Latino Productions [LatPro], who was hired to work at this event.” Vega did applaud Mora’s work, stating that he was hired very close to when the event was going to take place because “...the people in the Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce were not committed to making this event,

and there were some who even left things incomplete, which made us take emergency measures.” For Vega, this experience made it clear that, in the future, “...the commitment made with the person in charge of the event must be made in full and be in place up until the event is over.” He also stated: “The civic, patriotic and festive sense for celebrating Mexican Independence Day with El Grito is becoming lost. Because of this, what matters is that we rescue the essence of the event.” Vega, who participated in the first celebration of El Grito, said that the mission and vision for the event focused on “celebrating this important day in Mexico’s history to let everyone in Omaha know that Mexican Independence Day is not on May 5th. This wasn’t done to underrate any event, but to give this day the spotlight it deserves. For me, El Grito was a happy day where people waved their flags and wore colorful regional outfits, and we must bring that back.” While analyzing why the event for El Grito “has changed over the last few years and is getting smaller,” as was stated by another one of its founders, Vega said that it has to do with the diversity in the nationality of the people that are currently part of the Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, who we must thank for their dedication and work. The problem is that said people cannot be motivated to work on an event that truly embodies what El Grito is because they don’t know why this Mexican celebration is so important.” Right now, Vega is the only Mexican in the board of directors for the Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “This means I have to work with other people in order to come up with a strategy that can allow us to do something different for next year, not to undermine what was done for this year’s event which was enjoyed by many people and which helped the bottom line of many business owners. Even though it wasn’t a record-breaking event, we can say it was a good event that brought in many people, and that had a good economic impact on the community. But going from the history of the event and the numbers for previous years, we do find that we have a greater challenge to work on.” What’s interesting is that even from the first time that El Grito took place, most of the people that have pushed for this celebration are not Mexican, which does showcase the passion and willingness of people who have at one time or another worked on organizing this celebration. But for planning other strategies, creating a committee that can work on an event of this nature (with Mexican members in its ranks), or even establishing a committee with members from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, are some of the options presented by Tony Vega who at a time was also the director for said organization. “I hope we can once again have the participation of other countries, as has been the case for other editions of this event, so that it can bring us together as Latin American brothers and sisters. It will be interesting to make this a cultural event for the whole family, making it a worthy showcase for the artists and the public in attendance, so that we can open a space where Mexican and Latin American members of our community can join us for this celebration.” To conclude, Vega once again applauded the dedication of the board of directors that currently runs the Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, presided by Puerto Rican Nelson Idelfonso, as well as the work of Marco Mora. This concluded the 9th celebration of El Grito in South Omaha, making it clear that it is now “a tradition in the city,” as stated by Abiut Arcos, while opening the potential for implementing new ideas that can improve and increase the scope of this celebration.

aría Agui Carter, premiada cineasta, tiene mucho que decir sobre su nueva cinta Rebel, la historia de una Latina que se hizo pasar por hombre para ser espia y luchar durante la Guerra Civil de los Estados Unidos. Agui Carter hablará sobre la película, que recientemente fue transmitida como un especial por PBS, y sobre su protagonista la inmigrante Cubana Loreta Velázquez, después de que la cinta sea presentada a las 7 p.m., el 25 de septiembre, en El Museo Latino, ubicado en 4701 South 25th Street. Agui Carter, quien también es inmigrante, es una cineasta independiente con base en Massachusetts, quien también fundó Iguana Films, una compañía de cine y nuevos medios de comunicación que realiza trabajos en idioma inglés y español. Se graduó de Harvard, en donde incluso ella es artista academica invitada. Ella nos habla sobre lo que le llevó a trabajar en este proyecto, el cual ha tardado más de 12 años para convertirse en una realidad: “Me encanta la historia, por lo que busco personajes interesantes, en especial mujeres y latinos dentro de la historia de los Estados Unidos. Así, llegó a mis manos una copia original de las memorias de Loreta en la Biblioteca Widener (en Harvard)”. Agui Carter encontró poderosos relatos que hablan sobre las experiencias de Loreta como narradora, inmigrante y feminista Latina. “Tuve un sentimiento único que me hizo pensar en contar esta historia. Me fascinó la pregunta sobre ciudadanía e identidad nacional, pues yo lle-

gué a este país como una niña indocumentada y fuí criada por mi madre ‘clandestinamente’. Al crecer, me sentí identificada como estadounidense, pero yo no tenía la ciudadanía”. La historia de Loreta habla de cuestiones sobre género, raza y autodeterminación, temas con los que Agui Carter claramente se siente identificada. “Me identifico con Loreta y con su dolorosa lucha para poder ser aceptada dentro de su comunidad. Loreta presenta la perspectiva de una mujer Latina durante un periodo en el que existía una guerra que usualmente pensamos se desarrollaba entre blancos y afroamericanos. Pero esta es una historia que no es tanto sobre la Guerra Civil, sino más sobre lo compleja que es la vida de una mujer, quien se reinventó a sí misma para poder sobrevivir las circunstancias imposibles en las que se encontraba. Y esa reinvención es la experiencia estadounidense por excelencia que resuena con tantos estadounidenses – esa idea de que no estamos definidos por lo que somos al nacer, sino por lo que logramos hacer por nosotros”. La película de Agui Carter responde y realiza muchas preguntas a razón de las memorias de Loreta. “Mi película es una historia de detectives en la que se está tratando de entender a la mujer, al mito y a las políticas de cómo entendemos nuestro propio pasado”. Desde la época cuando Loreta publicó sus memorias hasta la fecha, su historia ha sido marginalizada, refutada e inclusive ha sido llamada un fraude. “Ella fue atacada, llamada mentirosa y fraudulenta por un retrógrado general Confederado, Jubal

Early, quien leyó sus memorias y pensó que su historia era absurda. Él era muy poderoso y desestimó su historia en un foro público. Las generaciones posteriores siguieron su ejemplo”. Para poder aclarar el misterio, Agui Carter consultó a historiadores que le hicieron saber que alrededor de 1,000 mujeres se disfrazaron de hombres para pelear en la Guerra Civil. Ellos confirmaron que Loreta luchó bajo el nombre de Harry T. Buford en First Bull Run y fue herida en Shiloh. En algún punto, Loreta se convirtió en espía, primero para la Confederación y después para la Unión. Ella utilizó varios alias, incluyendo como Laura Williams y Loretea DeCaulp. La película de Agui Carter, un híbrido entre un film y un documental, utiliza actores para dramatizar ciertas escenas. “No conocemos los detalles exactos de su servicio, ni tampoco del resto de las mujeres que lucharon disfrazadas de hombres pues ellas estaban escondiendo su rastro y sus identidades”, nos dice la directora. En cuanto a la razón por la que Loreta hizo lo que hizo, Agui Carter dice: “Ella acababa de perder a su familia y cuando era niña ella soñaba con ser una heroína. Es una trama complicada y deliciosa”. La cineasta admira lo que Loreta logró al tener una vida emancipada inesperada, compartiendo su viaje con el resto del mundo. “Su libro popularizó la historia de una mujer que rompió las reglas y las barreras sociales que, terminada la guerra, muchos trataban de levantar de nuevo. Al escribir sus memorias, ella permitió que otras
personas imaginaran que también podían escoger sus propios destinos e ir en contra de la corriente. En su momento esto fue considerado como algo muy peligroso, en un momento en que los hombres regresaban de la Guerra y esperaban que las mujeres regresaran a sus anteriores roles. Ella se negó a estar limitada por las restricciones de su época. Ella imaginó un mundo para sí misma y lo creó, independientemente de lo que las personas le dijeron que ella no podía hacer. Ella hizo que lo imposible fuera posible para ella misma”. Agui Carter escribió una nueva obra, “14 trenes de carga” (14 Freight Trains), sobre el primer soldado estadounidense que murió en Iraq – un Latino indocumentado. Por ello, esta historia tiene una conexión con Rebel y con la experiencia de su familia. “Mi madre se casó con un veterano de Vietnam que presentó una solicitud para que mi madre y yo obtuviéramos nuestra ciudadanía. La guerra es algo terrible y doloroso que transforma a las personas, y sin embargo la gente cree lo suficiente en este país como para poner en riesgo sus vidas, incluyendo generación tras generación de inmigrantes. Esta es una profunda experiencia, y yo me siento atraída a estas historias de personas que creen tanto en algo que están dispuestas a apostar su vida”. Ella ahora está transformando la historia de Loreta hacia una narrativa de acción. Puede ver Rebel gratuitamente con su boleto de entrada al museo. A
ward-winning filmmaker Maria Agui Carter has much to say about her new film “Rebel”, the story of a Latina who posed as a man to fight and spy in the American Civil War. Agui Carter will discuss the film, which recently aired as a PBS special, and its protagonist, Cuban immigrant Loreta Velazquez, following a 7 p.m. screening, on September 25 at El Museo Latino, 4701 South 25th Street. An immigrant herself, Agui Carter is an independent filmmaker based in Mass. and founder of Iguana Films, a film and new media company making Spanish and English language works. She’s a graduate of Harvard University, where she’s been a visiting artist-scholar. In a director’s statement and answers provided via email, she details what led her to do the 12-years-inthe-making project. “I’m a history buff, I look for interesting characters, especially women and Latinos, in American history,” she says. “I came across an original copy of Loreta’s 1876 memoir in Widener Library (Harvard).” Agui Carter found powerful themes in those accounts that speak to her experience as a Latina storyteller, immigrant to the U.S. and feminist. “I felt uniquely qualified to tell the story. I’m fascinated by the question of citizenship and national identity, having been brought here as a child undocumented and raised ‘underground’ by my mother. I felt growing up I was deeply American, but I did not have the citizenship status.” Loreta’s story touches on issues of gender, race and self-determination Agui Carter identifies with. “I identify with Loreta and sympathize with her painful struggle to find acceptance within her community. Loreta presents a Latina’s and a woman’s perspective on a time period and a war we usually

think of as exclusively black and white. But this is less a story about the Civil War and more the story of a complex woman who reinvented herself to survive the impossible circumstances in which she found herself. And that reinvention of self is a quintessentially American experience that resonates with so many Americans – that idea we are not what we are born, but what we make of ourselves.” Agui Carter’s fllm answers and asks questions prompted by the memoir. “My film is a detective story trying to understand the woman, the myth and the politics of how we understand our own past.” From the time Loreta published her memoir until now, her story’s been marginalized and contested, even called a hoax. “She was attacked as a liar and a fraud by an unreconstructed Ex-Confederate general. Jubal Early, who read her memoir and thought her story preposterous. He was quite powerful and publicly dismissed her story. Subsequent generations generally followed his lead.” To unravel the mystery, Agui Carter consulted historians, who informed her some 1,000 women disguised as men fought in the Civil War. They confirms Loreta fought under the name Harry T. Buford at First Bull Run and was wounded at Shiloh. At some point Loreta became a spy, first for the Confederacy, then for the Union. She went by many aliases, including Laura Williams and Loretea DeCaulp. Agui Carter’s hybrid documentary uses actors to dramatize certain scenes. “We don’t know all the exact details of her service, nor that of the other documented women who fought disguised as men because they were hiding their tracks and identities,” she says. As for why Loreta did what she did, Agui Carter says, “She had just lost her family and as a young girl

she had dreamed of being a hero. it’s a complicated and deliciously twisted plot. “ The filmmaker admires what Loreta did in carving out an unexpected, emancipated life and sharing her journey with the world. “Her book popularized her story of a woman who broke the rules and social boundaries that, post-war, so many were trying to reconstruct. By writing her memoirs, she allowed others to imagine that they, too, might choose their own fates and go against the grain. This was considered dangerous at a time when men were returning from war and expecting the women to go back to their old roles. “She refused to be bounded by the strictures of her time. She imagined a world for herself and went out and created it, regardless of what people told her she couldn’t do. She made the impossible possible for herself.” Agui Carter has authored a new play, 14 Freight Trains, about the first American soldier to die in Iraq – an undocumented Latino. It has reverberations with Rebel and her own family’s experience. “My mother married a Vietnam veteran who applied for citizenship for my mother and myself. War is a terrible, painful, transformative thing and yet people believe in this country enough to put their lives on the line for it, including generation after generation of immigrants. This is a profound experience and I am drawn to these stories of people who would believe in something so much they would risk their lives for it.” She’s working on turning Loreta’s story into a narrative action feature. BREVES Latino busca una banca en el Senado estatal Luis Sotelo de Lexington Nebraska busca una banca en el senado de Nebraska. Sotelo, un inmigrante de Chihuahua, México, está compitiendo contra el candidato Matt Williams para representar al Distrito 36. Sotelo es actualmente un especialista de planificación para la universidad con la Fundación EducationQuest y trabaja con los estudiantes en Nebraska para que puedan perseguir una educación universitaria. Una de las plataformas de Sotelo incluye el fortalecimiento de las escuelas de Nebraska. De acuerdo con la página web del candidato el estado necesita mejorar su sistema educativo Pre-K-12 y centrarse en hacer la universidad más asequible para los estudiantes de Nebraska. uando Olga Navedo conoció a Jenny le advirtieron que la niña de 11 años era tímida, pero eso no desanimó a la “Big Sister”, quien sugirió salir a comprar un helado apenas obtuvo el permiso para estar un momento a solas con su “Little”: “En cuanto estuvimos juntas nos pusimos a platicar sobre cómo le iba en la escuela, cuáles eran sus materias favoritas y lo que le gustaba hacer en su tiempo libre. Esa fue la parte más significativa de nuestro primer encuentro, ya que aún sin conocernos, la pasamos muy bien e iniciamos la excelente relación que llevamos hasta ahora”. Navedo lleva 3 años colaborando voluntariamente como Big Sister en Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands, y además desde marzo del 2013 trabaja como Coordinadora de Mentores (tutores) Latinos en dicha agencia no lucrativa. “Los servicios de Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands son muy importantes en nuestra comunidad - expresó Navedo -, porque hay muchos niños allá afuera que necesitan un poco de atención, quizás porque mamá está ocupada trabajando para mantener a la familia o porque son varios los hijos a los que atiende”. Por más de un siglo, la organización que brinda sus servicios en todo el país (e incluso cuenta con filiales a nivel internacional), le proporciona a los niños y niñas (Littles) de entre 6 a 18 años de edad la oportunidad de establecer una relación positiva y duradera con mentores adultos (Big Brothers y Big Sisters), quienes les comparten valores y experiencias que enriquecerán su crecimiento. “Lo que pedimos es que los voluntarios (hombres y mujeres e incluso parejas de esposos) que quieran participar, se comprometan a visitar a su Little por lo menos dos veces al mes, y por un mínimo de 4 horas en total. Eso no implica un esfuerzo extraordinario ya que por muy ocupados que este-

mos, yo reto a cualquier persona a que me diga que no tiene éste tiempo para ayudar a mejorar la vida de un niño que realmente necesita el apoyo”. Por su parte, los padres de familia que así lo requieran, de igual manera pueden inscribir a sus pequeños: “Los interesados pueden venir directamente a nuestras oficinas para obtener más información, llamarnos o consultar nuestra página en internet. Ambas partes deberán pasar por un proceso que sí bien se lleva tiempo, es fundamental realizarlo para obtener los mejores resultados”. En el caso de los voluntarios que aspiran a convertirse en Big Brothers o Big Sisters como lo es la propia Navedo, antes de recibir el entrenamiento adecuado, todos sin excepción deben someterse a un riguroso chequeo de su historial para conocer su calidad moral y asegurarse de que no tengan algún antecedente penal en los estados de Nebraska y Iowa, o a nivel nacional (por ejemplo como ofensores sexuales o con cargos criminales de abuso infantil): “La seguridad y el bienestar de nuestros Littles es nuestra preocupación principal. Nos interesa que los padres se sientan cómodos sabiendo que sus hijos estarán en buenas manos”. Así mismo se deben presentar 5 referencias personales, incluyendo las de su empleador, algún pariente y otras agencias donde se haya participado anteriormente como voluntario, y se debe tener licencia de manejo y seguro vehicular vigente. Cuando finalmente se aprueba a un candidato entonces inicia el proceso de selección basado en afinidades e intereses comunes entre ambas partes (Big Brothers/Sisters y Littles), seguido de entrevistas con la familia del Little y con el Little mismo. “Una vez que un Big entra en contacto con su Little deberá buscar actividades interesantes y divertidas para los dos - explicó Navedo -, y para ello contamos con el apoyo de algunos patrocinadores que nos ofrecen descuentos, así que duran-

te el mes llegamos a tener boletos para diferentes lugares como museos o les organizamos actividades gratuitas bajo techo o al aire libre, todo con el propósito de minimizar los gastos”. Al final, el programa es sin duda muy gratificante para ambas partes, pero Navedo está consiente de que en el caso de las familias hispanas no es una tarea sencilla: “En primera por el lenguaje, ya que aunque el Little sea bilingüe, si los padres no lo son, debemos encontrar al Big que hable español para evitar problemas de comunicación. El segundo reto es ganarse la confianza de los padres latinos, pues culturalmente ellos se sienten mejor si dejan salir a sus hijos con algún miembro de la familia y no precisamente con algún desconocido”. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands actualmente tiene a 21 niñas esperando por una Big Sister y a 87 niños en espera de su Big Brother, de ellos 3 son niños latinos, entre los cuales hay quienes llevan más de un año esperando por la oportunidad de tener a un mentor. “Necesitamos la participación de todos pero principalmente de la comunidad latina. Un Big Brother o una Big Sister no suplen o cumplen las funciones de un papá o de una mamá, sino que se convierten en un amigo o amiga del niño o la niña (Little). Como su nombre bien lo dice, un hermano o hermana mayor, alguien en quién se puede confiar y un modelo a seguir”, concluyó Navedo. BRIEFS Latino busca una banca en el Senado estatal Latino Running for Legislature Luis Sotelo of Lexington Nebraska seeks a seat in the Nebraska Legislature. Sotelo, an immigrant from Chihuahua, Mexico, is running against candidate Matt Williams to represent District 36. Sotelo is currently a college-planning specialist with EducationQuest Foundation and works with students in Nebraska so they can pursue a college education. One of Sotelo’s platforms includes strengthening the schools in Nebraska. According to the candidates webpage the state needs to improve its PreK-12 education system and focus on making college more affordable for students in Nebraska. If elected, Sotelo also plans to work on securing the economic future of Nebraska and wants to focus on helping rural communities access important resources in the state. W
hen Olga Navedo met Jenny she was warned that the 11-year-old was shy, but that didn’t discourage the Big Sister. Once she was cleared to spend some time with her Little Sister, she suggested they go out for ice cream: “As soon as we were together we started to talk about how she was doing at school, about her favorite classes and about what she liked to do on her free time. That was a very meaningful first meeting because, even though we didn’t know each other, we had a great time, and we started a great relationship that continues to this day.” Navedo has been working as a volunteer for three years now as a Big Sister at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands, and since March, 2013, she’s been working as Latino Tutors Coordinator at the non-profit. “The services provided by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands are very important,” said Navarro, “because there are many kids out there that need some attention, maybe because their mom is busy working to support her family or because there are many kids in the family.” For over a century, the organization has provided services nationwide (even has some international branches). It supports boys and girls (Little Brothers and Sisters) between 6-18 years of age, so that they can have the opportunity to build a positive and lasting relationship with adult mentors (Big Brothers and Big Sisters), who share with them the values and experiences that will enhance their development. “What we ask is that volunteers (men, women and even married couples) who want to participate, must commit to seeing their Little Brother or Sister at least

twice a month, for a minimum of 4 hours in total. This isn’t hard to do. No matter how busy people are, I dare anyone to tell me they don’t have the time to help improve the life of a kid who really needs it.” Parents who need some help can enroll their kids in the program: “They can come directly to our office for more information, or they can call us or visit our website. Both parties must go through a process that does take some time, but that is fundamental for obtaining the best results possible.” As for volunteers who want to become a Big Brother or Big Sisters just like Navedo, before being properly trained, they must submit to a rigorous background check. This is done in order to learn about their moral quality and to make sure they don’t have a criminal record in Iowa or Nebraska, or in the rest of the country (for example, as sex offenders or child molesters): “The safety and wellbeing of our Little Brothers and Sisters is our top priority. We want parents to feel at ease, knowing that their children will be in good hands.” On top of that, volunteers must also present five personal references, including from their employer, from relatives or from other agencies where they have worked as volunteers, and they must have a driver’s license as well as car insurance. When a potential candidate is finally approved, the selection process is started in order to select volunteers based on the affinities and common interests between both parties (Big Brothers/Sisters and Little Brothers/Sisters). This is followed by interviews with the family of the Little Brother/ Little Sister as well as with the child. “Once a Big Brother/Sister meets with their Little Brother/Sister, they will need to find activities

that are fun and interesting for both of them,” said Navedo. “For that we have the support of several sponsors that offer us discounts, so every month we have tickets to different places like museums. We also organize outdoors or indoors events in order to minimize expenses.” In the end, the program is definitely good for both parties, but Navedo is aware that this isn’t easy for Latino families: “The first challenge is the language barrier because even if the Little Brother/Sister is bilingual, if the parents aren’t, we have to find a Big Brother/Sister who speaks Spanish to avoid something being lost in translation. The second challenge is winning the trust of Latino parents because, due to their culture, they feel better about letting their kids go out with a member of their family and not with a stranger.” Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands currently has 21 girls waiting for a Big Sister and 87 boys waiting for a Big Brother, and 3 of the boys are Latinos. “We need everyone to participate, but we definitely need the participation of the Latino community. A Big Brother or a Big Sister does not take the place of or do what a father or mother do, but they do become a friend for the child. Number of apprehensions along Southwest Border Decline According to a recent statement released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) the number of apprehensions along the southwest border have declined again. According to Secretary Johnson this reflects a “continued sharp decline in the number of unaccompanied children and adults with children apprehended while attempting to cross our southwest border illegally at the Rio Grande Valley.” The DHS clarified that this decline began around mid-June and that the number of unaccompanied minors was about half of what they were this June.
