oe Maass, entrenador de futbol soccer para Omaha South High disfruta de ser parte de una transformación que ha llevado a su programa de futbol soccer a cambiar de algo terrible a algo brillante y a su escuela del fracaso al éxito. Él tenía 26 años cuando obtuvo el empleo en el 2000. Esa es una edad muy joven para un entrenador en una gran escuela, pero en ese momento en realidad no había muchos candidatos buscando dicho puesto. Poco a poco, Maass logró cambiar la situación. Él ahora ha colocado al equipo de futbol soccer de South High como uno de los candidatos al título y lo ha transfor-

mado para convertirle en un orgullo para la escuela y para la comunidad a la que representa.

South prácticamente ha construido una dinastía gracias a la fortaleza de sus jugadores latinos, mismos que se han convertido en el nuevo rostro de la escuela de más de un siglo de edad.

Michael Jaime se convirtió en el primer Jugador Juvenil Gatorade de Futbol Soccer del Año (2013-2014) de South, uno de los diversos jugadores de gran nivel con apellido latino que ha producido la escuela. En el 2010, Manny Lira fue el capitán del equipo all-state.

Estos jugadores y otros más lograron obtener becas para la universidad.

Por la novena temporada consecutiva, el equipo de South es contemplado como una gran amenaza para las aspiraciones del resto de los equipos. Los Packers iniciaron la temporada el 19 de marzo con una victoria sobre Schuyler.

Maass comenta que las probabilidades para su equipo en este 2015 son prometedoras. “Como unidad somos muy buenos. Tengo muchos jugadores muy buenos pero no hay ningún jugador que esté marcadamente por encima del nivel de los demás jugadores en el Estado, por lo que definitivamente este será un año de equipo en donde muchos niños diferentes contribuyen. Creo que calificar al nivel

estatal sería una meta razonable y tal vez una vez que estemos ahí...”.

Todo puede pasar. Solamente algunos años después de ser un equipo perdedor, South llegó a su primer final estatal en el 2010, el juego recordado por el incidente de las “green card” en la que los fanáticos del equipo contrario lanzaron green cards al campo de juego, insinuando que los jugadores de South eran inmigrantes ilegales.

Este fue el más público de un gran número de insultos racistas dirigidos a South. y continúa en la página 5

y viene de la página 4 Maass dice estar orgulloso por “la manera en que el equipo lo manejó. Estos niños no tomaron represalias. Ellos defendieron a su equipo y a su escuela, defendieron lo que estaba bien y se defendieron de lo que estaba mal”.

South entonces tuvo en el 2013 lo que se puede decir fue la mejor temporada de todos los tiempos para un equipo de niños en Nebraska Clase A, con 23 encuentros ganados y ningún encuentro perdido en su camino por el título estatal, estableciendo varios records en el camino. Elite Soccer Report nombró a South como el mejor equipo entre los Estados en los que el futbol soccer es un deporte de primavera. “Ganamos todo y lo hicimos de la manera correcta”, dijo Maass.

Nada de esto parecía posible hace 16 años.

“Todo lo que se ha logrado es algo que jamás imaginé. Siento un gran orgullo por eso y por saber que si mañana dejase de ser el entrenador, el futbol soccer de South High continuará siendo bueno pues hemos construido un programa fuerte”.

No está nada mal considerando con lo que comenzó Maass. “La persona que antes era entrenador principal vio en mí energía y pasión, por lo que dio un paso al lado y me recomendó para remplazarlo. La verdad es que nadie más presentó una solicitud para tomar el trabajo por lo que simplemente me lo dieron a mí pues nadie lo quería. No había nada que hiciera de este un trabajo deseable”. Él continúa: “El programa en ese entonces era muy malo. La escuela en realidad no daba fondos para el programa. Los uniformes eran muy viejos. El futbol soccer como deporte no recibía mucha atención o respeto, en especial en esta área”.

Además de un interés y de expectativas bajas - South ganó ocho encuentros durante sus primeros cuatro años - fue difícil convencer a los niños que jugaran y a los fans que los siguieran.

“Yo tenía alrededor de 11 a 12 jugadores. En la primera práctica había 15 niños en el campo y cuatro de ellos llegaron ‘de la calle’ pues no eran estudiantes. Yo solamente tenía un niño de último año. Para el siguiente año tuve tal vez entre 13 a 15 jugadores.

Y ya después fueron 18 jugadores. Cada año el grupo crecía poco a poco”. Él buscó en los parques y campos de futbol soccer del Sur de Omaha tratando de encontrar a jugadores talentosos y en poco tiempo niños con

grandes habilidades, e inclusive jugadores de clubes de élite, completaron su grupo.

Las instalaciones eran lejos de ser ideales hasta antes de que el Estadio Collin abriera sus puertas en el 2009, brindando al entonces ya mejorado programa una gran ventaja gracias a su campo de futbol soccer de tamaño completo.

La única constante, dijo Maass es que “los niños eran grandes niños”. Continúa comentando: “Pero no creo que nadie pensaba que South pasaría de ser el peor equipo en el Estado a lo que es ahora. Cada año prácticamente estamos proyectados como un equipo para el top 10 y ahí es donde queremos estar - como un equipo del top 10 al que todos deberían de tenerle un poco de miedo”.

Hoy en día el programa recibe a más de 100 estudiantes que hacen pruebas para ser aceptados, contando el programa con entre 80 a 90 jugadores en todas sus divisiones. Los graduados están obteniendo becas para jugar en la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha, en la Universidad Bellevue y en otras escuelas. Varios están entrenando jugadores en South, incluyendo a Leo Enríquez y Cesar Lira, mientras que varios otros están entrenando a equipos de clubes o a escuelas que juegan contra South.

Aunque antes el futbol soccer de South no era importante, hoy es tema de conversación. Cara Riggs fue la directora de South cuando Maass comenzó con el gran cambio. Más que todas las victorias logradas, ella aprecia el que a Maass en verdad le importaran las cosas.

“Joe en ocasiones puede parecer algo duro, incluso un poco áspero. Pero bajo ese rudo exterior se encuentra un hombre bondadoso y compasivo a quien le importan mucho los niños con quienes trabaja. Él tiene grandes expectativas para el trabajo de los niños y está dispuesto a hacer todo lo posible por el éxito de sus jugadores. Su lealtad a South High, a sus estudiantes y a South Omaha es tan fuerte como un camión Mack”.

Tobias Maertzke, un estudiante alemán de intercambio que jugo en South hace unos cuantos años, vivió con Maass y con su esposa mientras estudiaba ahí. “Él es casi como un miembro de la familia”, dijo Maass.

Maass reconoce que ha cambiado y madurado desde que se convirtió en padre. Él y su esposa ahora tienen dos hijos.

“Me he suavizado un tanto. Todavía soy estricto pero no demasiado estricto como antes lo era. De hecho, durante mis primeros años tal vez era demasiado duro. Yo tenía un gran entendimiento por el juego pero tal vez no tanto para entender a los niños, mientras que ahora siento que entiendo a los niños, al juego y a cómo funcionan los árbitros. Siento que los árbitros me respetan, por lo que no me amonestan rápidamente con una tarjeta amarilla si me exalto un poco”.

Rigs dice que el futbol soccer de South tuvo un impacto positivo más allá del campo de juego.

“El éxito del programa de futbol soccer de Joe ha sido un definitivo aumento al orgullo escolar y al respeto de la comunidad. Dicho éxito ayudó a poner nuevamente en el mapa a South y a reconocer una vez más a la comunidad de Omaha”.

Maass, cuyas raíces están en ese vecindario, comenta: “El sentido de comunidad que regresó a South es increíble para mí”.

Habiendo llevado a South a ser un programa de élite - y manteniéndolo ahí - Maass no está seguro de cual logro es más difícil.

“Fue muy difícil llegar hasta ahí pero es difícil mantenerse en lo más alto pues más niños juegan ahora en este deporte y otras escuelas están comenzando a reflejar las cosas que hemos realizado”.

De todos los logros obtenidos por South, incluyendo campeonatos de distrito y del área metropolitana, así como récords por más goles anotado y más partidos registrados sin recibir gol en una temporada, el título estatal del 2013 todavía es lo mejor que se ha logrado.

“Ganar un campeonato en South después de tantos años sin ganar nada fue algo grande. Se sintió muy bien que nuestro programa fuera el mejor de todos”.

Los campeonatos y records son buenos, nos dice, pero al final del día lo que más importa es la relación que forja con los niños y que ellos puedan seguir sus metas de vida.

South juega un tido en casa a las p.m. contra North este 17 de abril.

O

maha South High soccer coach Joe Maass enjoys being part of a transformation that’s seen his soccer program blossom from awful to brilliant and his school rise from woebegone to thriving.

He was 26 when he got the job in 2000. That’s unusually young for a big school head coach but it wasn’t like candidates were busting down the doors. Slowly but surely though, Maass turned that no-win situation around. He now has South soccer a perennial contender and a point of pride for the school and community it represents.

South has built a near dynasty on the strength of mostly Latino players who’ve become the new face of the more than

century-old school. Michael Jaime became the first Gatorade Nebraska Boys Soccer Player of the Year (2013-2014) from South, one of several all-state players with Spanish surnames the school’s produced. In 2010 Manny Lira was the captain of the all-state team. Those players and several others went on to earn college scholarships.

For the ninth consecutive season South’s regarded as a major threat. The Packers opened the season March 19 with a win over Schuyler and now have eight straight wins.

Maass says the prospects for his 2015 team are promising.

“As a unit we’re really good. I have a lot of pretty good players but there’s not like one or two players miles ahead of everybody else in the state, so this is definitely going to be a team year where a lot of different kids contribute.

Anything can happen. Only a few years after being a losing team, South made its first state final in 2010, the game infamous for the “green card” incident when opposing fans threw mock green cards on the field to insinuate South players were illegal immigrants. It was the most public in a long line of racial insults directed at South.

Maass says he was proud of “the way his team handled it,” adding, “The kids didn’t retaliate – they stood up for the team and school and for what was right and wrong.” y continued on page 8

y continued from page 6 South then put together arguably the greatest season ever by a Nebraska Class A boys soccer team in 2013, going 23-0 en route to the state title, setting many records in the process. Elite Soccer Report named South the top team among states where soccer’s a spring sport.

“We won the whole thing and we did it the right way,” Maass says.

None of it seemed possible 16 years ago.

“Everything that’s been accomplished I would never have imagined. I have a huge sense of pride in that and in knowing that if I stopped coaching tomorrow South High soccer’s still going to be pretty good because we’ve built a strong program.”

Not bad considering what Maass started with.

“The guy who was the head coach before me saw I had some energy and passion, so he stepped down and recommended me to replace him. The truth is nobody else applied, so they just gave it to me because essentially nobody wanted that job. There was nothing desirable about it. It was not very forgiving.

“The program was pretty bad back then.

The school really didn’t fund the program.

The uniforms were really old. The sport of soccer didn’t get much attention or respect, especially down here.”

Besides low interest and expectations – South won eight games his first four years – it was hard getting kids to play and fans to follow.

“I had somewhere around 11 or 12 players.

The first practice there were 15 kids on the field and four of them were off the streets, they weren’t even students. I only had one senior.

The next year it was maybe 13 to 15 players.

Then 18. Each year it just grew a little bit.”

He scoured South O parks and fields for promising talent and before long gifted players, even some elite club players, filled his rosters.

The facilities were subpar until Collin Stadium opened in 2009, giving the by-then vastly improved program a distinct home advantage with its full-sized soccer field.

The one constant, Maass says, is that “the kids were great kids.” “But,” he adds, “I don’t think anybody saw South going from being the worst team in the state to what it is now. We’re pretty much a projected top 10 team every year and that’s where we want to be – a top 10 team that everybody has to kind of somewhat fear.”

These days the program gets 100-plus students trying out and carries 80 to 90 players across its varsity, junior varsity and freshman squads. Grads are getting scholarships to play at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Bellevue University and other schools. Several are coaching for South, including Leo Enriquez and Cesar Lira, and several others

are coaching for club teams or competing schools.

thought, it’s now a conversation starter. Cara Riggs was South’s principal when Maass engineered the turnaround. More than all the wins, she appreciated the way Maass cared.

“Joe sometimes comes off as tough, maybe even gruff. Underneath that exterior is a very soft-hearted, compassionate man who cares very deeply about the kids he works with. He has high expectations of your hard work and he’s willing to go above and beyond for you and your success. His loyalty to South High, its students and South Omaha is as strong as a Mack truck.”

Tobias Maertzke, a German exchange student who played at South a few years ago, lived with Maass and his wife while going to school there.

“He’s like a family member almost,” Maass says.

Maass acknowledges he’s softened and matured since becoming a father. He and his wife have two children.

“I’ve mellowed quite a bit. I’m still fiery but not overly fiery like I used to be. The first couple years i was probably a little bit rough actually. I had a great understanding for the game but maybe not an understanding for all the kids, whereas now I feel I understand the kids, the game, how the referees work. I feel the refs respect me, so they’re not as quick to give me a yellow card if I step out of line.”

Riggs says South soccer made a positive impact far beyond the field.

“The success of Joe’s soccer program has been a definite booster for school pride and community respect. The success helped put South back on the map and recognized again in the Omaha community.”

Maass, whose roots are in that neighborhood, says, “The sense of community that came back to South Omaha is just amazing to me.”

Having built South to be an elite program and kept it there, Maass is not sure which feat is more difficult.

“It was really hard to get there but it’s hard to stay on top though because more kids are playing the sport now and other schools are starting to mirror the things we’ve done.”

Of all the achievements South’s attained, including district and metro crowns and records for most goals scored and most shutouts recorded in a single season, the 2013 state title stands out.

“Winning a championship at South after they hadn’t won one in years was big. It felt great to feel our program was on top of the world.”

Championships and records are nice, he says, “but at the end of the day” it’s the relationships he forges with “the kids” and following their life pursuits that matter most to him.

“I see them out in the community. It’s interesting to see where they end up. I hope in some way I’ve impacted these kids. That by far outweighs everything else.”

South plays a 7:30 p.m. home game Friday, April 17 versus Lincoln’s North Star.

n 1972 se estableció la Mexican American Comission en Lincoln, y no fue sino hasta el 2010 que se cambió su nombre a Nebraska Latino American Commission (Comisión Latinoamericana de Nebraska, NLAC por sus siglas en inglés) para incluir a toda la comunidad latina del estado y no solamente hacer referencia a los inmigrantes de origen mexicano.

Aunque sin duda la NLAC ha tenido una notable evolución en cuanto a su visión, desde sus inicios ha seguido fiel a la misión de servir como enlace entre el gobierno estatal, representado por el gobernador recién electo, Pete Ricketts, y la creciente comunidad latina.

Su Presidente Ejecutivo, el Dr. Lázaro Arturo Spíndola de origen cubano, encabeza el grupo multicultural de miembros de NLAC, entre los que destaca Jasel Cantú como Oficial de Información Pública, la más joven del equipo de trabajo de la Comisión que opera desde el Capitolio.

Graduada de la University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA) en Edinburg, Texas, su estado natal, Cantú llegó a la región de las Grandes Planicies con su esposo, quien continúa su preparación académica en la Universidad de Nebraska en Lincoln.

Dada su capacidad bilingüe y experiencia en los medios, Cantú logró incorporarse rápidamente a sus tareas en octubre del 2011, y desde entonces lucha a favor de la comunidad latina de Nebraska, la cual considera que “necesita conocer más sobre todas las oportunidades educativas, económicas, de salud, sociales y culturales a su alcance”.

“Mi trabajo en la Comisión ciertamente ha sido diferente a todo lo que había tenido antes, pues no creo haber tenido otro empleo en el que se me presentaran tantos retos, pero que a la vez, me sintiera tan realizada con lo que hago”, expresó Cantú satisfecha, agregando que entre sus responsabilidades diarias están el preparar la re-

unión trimestral de la NLAC, mantener al corriente la agenda de trabajo y completar proyectos de publicidad y mercadotecnia tales como el diseño de folletos, el actualizar la página en internet con artículos de interés y publicar boletines informativos y comunicados de prensa, pero principalmente, manejar las redes sociales para motivar la participación ciudadana: “Tenemos cuentas activas en Facebook, Twitter y Pinterest, y todas ellas son importantes porque cumplimos con nuestras funciones educativas a través de ellas e igualmente mantenemos el contacto con otras organizaciones a nivel nacional e internacional sobre asuntos de interés”.

Ella selecciona cuidadosamente el material que le abrirá las puertas a un mejor futuro a la comunidad latina desde becas para estudiantes hasta oportunidades de trabajo: “Todos ésos datos, los apoyos financieros y las vacantes de empleos, los comunico constantemente en nuestras plataformas, al igual que promuevo la participación de miembros de la comunidad latina, líderes y activistas, para que se involucren en puestos estratégicos ya que considero que necesitamos a más personas de origen latino para representarnos en los diferentes comités gubernamentales”.

En ése sentido, Cantú destacó la entrega de miembros de la comunidad como el ex-policía Virgil Patlan recién nombrado por el propio gobernador Ricketts para ocupar un puesto en el Nebraska Board of Parole (Comité de Libertad Condicional de Nebraska), o como Michelle Suárez quien representa al Nebraska State College System (Comité del Sistema Universitario del estado de Nebraska), y muy especialmente, del profesor Dr. Marty Ramírez, quien forma parte de la Nebraska Sesquicentennial Commission (Comisión del Sesquicentenario de Nebraska) asignada para organizar un programa de actividades alusivas a la conmemoración de la fundación del estado en marzo del 2017.

“Una de las partes que más disfruto de mi trabajo - explicó Cantú -, es aquella en la que como parte de la Comisión participo testificando o presentando cifras y datos en audiencias en las salas de la corte para apoyar propuestas que sean a favor de los intereses de la población.

Sabemos que es necesario que todos nos hagamos escuchar y por eso abogamos al lado de organizaciones como el Heartland Workers Center, Latino Center of the Midlands y Nebraska Appleseed entre otras, para defender a los diferentes grupos de nuestra comunidad”.

NLAC divulga los proyectos de ley para que la población se mantenga al tanto de todo lo que acontece e incita a la gente a contactar a los senadores, ya sea vía telefónica, por correo electrónico o mediante cartas, para que apoyen una iniciativa o bien, se opongan a ella.

Cantú mantiene una actitud positiva dispuesta a colaborar profesionalmente con otras comisiones y a tomar parte en aquello que impacta directamente a los residentes, desde organizar una vigilia para detener el tráfico humano, hasta compartir tradiciones y costumbres como las del Día de los Muertos.

Fue por eso que José Santos (anterior representante de oficio) la nominó el pasado 2014 para recibir el merecido reconocimiento como Empleada del Año, el cual se sintió honrada en aceptar.

breves DÍA DE LOS NIÑOS SALUDABLES 2015 La YMCA de Omaha y el Concilio de Seguridad Nacional de Nebraska están organizando un evento comunitario para inspirar a mas niños a mantener sus mentes y cuerpos activos, el domingo, 26 de abril, de 11am a 2pm.

El Día de los Niños Saludables de la YMCA de Omaha, en una iniciativa nacional con el fin de mejorar la salud y el bienestar de los niños y sus familias, y organiza varias actividades como la carrera de obstáculos, Zumba en el parque, y otros mas, que motivan y enseñan a las familias la forma de desarrollar una rutina saludable en casa. El Concilio de Seguridad Nacional de Nebraska presentará varias demostraciones de seguridad con un rodeo de bicicletas, mantenimiento gratis de bicis, y se repartirán cascos de manera gratuita proveídos por el Hospital del Niño y el Centro Médico.

El Día de los Niños Saludables se llevará a cabo en el parque Stinson, en la Villa Aksarben. Para apartar su lugar en la línea “de alta velocidad” y su bolsa de dulces, se puede registrar en el sitio www.metroymca.org, o en la página de Facebook de la YMCA de Omaha.

AVANZA LA PROPUESTA DE LEY QUE DARÁ LICENCIA A LOS SOÑADORES El Comité de Telecomunicaciones y Transporte de la legislatura de Nebraska avanzó la propuesta de ley LB 623 el pasado viernes 10 de abril, la propuesta de ley que otorgará otorgará licencia de manejo a los beneficiarios de DACA. Esta propuesta de ley está ahora fuera del comité y pasará a ser debatida por toda la legislatura. Varias organizaciones comunitarias como Nebraska Appleseed y el Centro Laboral aplaudieron este importante evento y agradecieron al Senador Norquist por presentar esta propuesta de ley, al Senador McCollister por darle prioridad, y a los 23 senadores quienes apoyan la propuesta de ley, y también a la Alcaldesa de Omaha Jean Stothernt por enviar una carta al comité a favor de esta propuesta el pasado 8 de abril. La Alcaldesa Stothernt dijo en su carta que “Aquí en Omaha, nosotros debemos hacer que los niños de trabajadores indocumentados, quienes tienen un camino al estado legal, tengan las herramientas que necesitan para ser miembros productivos de nuestra comunidad. Ya es tiempo que el gobierno federal avance y tome acción al pasar una reforma de inmigración integral que también refuerce la seguridad de la frontera”. La alcaldesa pidió a la legislatura apoyar la prioridad que le dio el Senador McCollister a esta propuesta de ley para sacarla del comité y convertirla en ley.

El Gobernador Pete Rickets respondió en un comunicado de prensa que estaba completamente decepcionado de las acciones del comité y que el permanecía completamente en contra “de extender beneficios estatales a los individuos quienes han entrado ilegalmente al país, y permanece opuesto a esta legislatura”.

Nebraska es el único estado que niega licencias de manejar aquellos que se les permite su estadía legal bajo el programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia, o DACA. briefs HEALTHY KIDS DAY 2015 YMCA of Greater Omaha and National Safety Council, Nebraska are holding a free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active, on Sunday April, 26 from 11:00am to 2:00pm.

YMCA of Greater Omaha’s Healthy Kids Day is the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families, and features activities such as obstacle courses, Zumba in the park, and more to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home.

The National Safety Council, Nebraska will lead safety demonstrations with a bike rodeo, free bike maintenance and free bike helmets will be provided by Children’s Hospital & Medical Center.

he Mexican American Commission was created in Lincoln in 1972, and it wasn’t until 2010 that its name was changed into the Nebraska Latino American Commission (NLAC) in order to include the whole Latino community in the state and not only immigrants of Mexican origin.

Even though the NLAC’s vision has evolved over the years, it has always been faithful to its mission to serve as liaison between the state government, currently represented by recently elected Governor Pete Ricketts, and the growing Latino community.

Dr. Lazaro Arturo Spondola, Executive President for the organization - a Latino of Cuban origin - leads the multicultural group of members of the NLAC. One of the members that stands out is Jasel Cantu, Public Information Officer, the youngest member of the team’s staff who works from the Capitol. A graduate from the University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA) at Edinburg, Texas - her home state - Cantu arrived at the Great Plains region along with her husband who continues his studies at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Given her bilingual skills and expertise in media, Cantu quickly managed to start working on October, 2011, and she’s been fighting ever since in favor of the Latino community in Nebraska which she believes “needs to know more about all the education, financial, health, social and cultural opportunities available to them.”

“My work at the Commission is certainly different from all of my previous jobs because I don’t think I’ve ever been challenged so much, but, at the same time, I’ve never felt so accom-

plished about what I do,” said Cantu, adding that among her daily responsibilities, she prepares the quarterly meetings of the NLAC, updates the organization’s schedule and completes advertising and marketing projects such as creating brochures, updating the websites with interesting articles, posting news bulletins and press releases, as well as using social media to motivate people to participate: “We have active accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, and they’re all very important to us because we can provide information to people while also keeping in touch with other national and international organizations.”

She carefully selects the material that will open the doors to a better future for the Latino community, from scholarships for students to job opportunities: “I constantly share all of that information on our social media accounts for any available financial aid and job openings. I also promote the participation of the members of the Latino community, of its leaders and activist, so that they become involved from strategic positions because I believe that we need more Latino individuals to represent us in all government committees.”

On that note, Cantu highlighted the commitment of community members like former police officer Virgil Parlan who was recently appointed by Governor Ricketts for a position at the Nebraska Board of Parole, or like Michelle Suarez who represents the Nebraska State College System, not to mention Dr. Marty Ramirez, who is part of the Nebraska Sesquicentennial Commission that is in charge of organizing all activities for celebrating the state’s creation so that things are ready on March, 2017.

“One of the things I most enjoy about my work,” said Cantu, “is when I participate as part of the Commission and I present all the stats and data at hearings in court in order to support bill propositions that work in favor of upholding the best interests of the population. We know that we have to make sure we are heard, which is why we work alongside organizations such as the Heartland Workers Center, the Latino Center of the Midlands and Nebraska Appleseed, to name a few, in order to defend all the groups in our community.”

The NLAC promotes bill propositions so that the population is aware of the situation, and it encourages people to contact Senators, either over the phone, by email or by writing letters, to either support or oppose a proposition.

Cantu maintains a positive attitude and is always willing to collaborate with other Commissions.

She’s ready to work on that which can directly impact the community, from organizing a vigil to stop human trafficking to sharing great traditions such as the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

It is because of this that Jose Santos (former representative) nominated her in 2014 for the Employee of the Year award which she felt honored to accept.

BILL FOR DACA’S LICENSES ADVANCES OUT OF COMMITTEE The Nebraska Legislature’s Transportation and Telecommunication Committee advanced LB623 last Friday April 10th, the bill that would let Nebraska DACA beneficiaries to apply for driver’s licenses.

This bill is now out of the committee and moves on to debate by the full Legislature. Several community organizations like Nebraska Appleseed and the Heartland Workers Center applauded this important step and gave thanks to Senator Norquist for introducing the bill, and to Senator McCollister for prioritizing the bill, and the 23 other senators who became co-sponsors of the bill, and also to Omaha Mayor Jean Stothernt for sending a letter to the committee in support of the bill.

Mayor Stothert issued a letter to state senators on April 8th, stating her support of LB 623. Mayor Stothert said in her letter: “Here in Omaha, we should make children of undocumented workers who are on the path of legal status have the tools they need to be productive members of our community. It is time for the federal government to step up and take action by passing comprehensive immigration reform that will also secure our borders.” Mayor Stothern requested the Legislature to move Senator McCollister’s priority bill out of the Transportation and Communication Committee and pass it into a law.

Governor Pete Rickets said in a press release in response, that he was disappointed with the committee’s action and that he remained strongly oppose “to extending state benefits to individuals who have entered our country illegally, and remain opposed to this legislation.”

Nebraska is the only state to deny licenses to those allowed to lawfully stay under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA program.

OMAHA COLLEGE FAIR AT CENTURY LINK CENTER The Century Link Center will serve as host for an upcoming national (NACAC) college fair on Saturday, April 18, from 1:00-4:00pm. Around 100 colleges and universities (2yr, 4yr, public, private) will be present for this event. Additionally, there will be the following workshops at the fair in either Workshop A or Workshop B: 2 financial aid programs (one in Spanish) and an ACT prep program

Students are encouraged to register for a barcode to communicate demographic and academic information with the college representatives who will be on hand. La Comisión de Igualdad de Oportunidades en el Empleo de los Estados Unidos de América tiene como objetivo principal proteger los derechos de los trabajadores por tanto, se encarga de investigar casos sobre la discriminación de trabajadores por raza, color, religión, sexo, nacionalidad, edad o discapacidad.

El acuerdo que se firmará en las instalaciones del Consulado de México en Omaha busca establecer una relación de colaboración para proveer a los mexicanos en la circunscripción, de la información y orientación para ejercer sus derechos laborales relacionados con la discriminación en el empleo y la igualdad de oportunidades laborales. Así mismo concientizar a los connacionales de los derechos y responsabilidades en su lugar de trabajo.

En esta ceremonia, por parte de La Comisión de Igualdad de Oportunidades en el Empleo de los Estados Unidos de América, firmará el Memorándum de Entendimiento el Director de Distrito de San Luis, el Sr. James R. La ceremonia de premiación se llevo a cabo en la ciudad de Lincoln, dentro de las instalaciones del capitolio. Ahí se dio cita el gobernador Pete Ricketts, para hacer entrega del premio mencionado, junto con autoridades del departamento de desarrollo económico de Nebraska, quienes auspician dicha ceremonia.

El trabajo realizado por el equipo del proyecto premiado, bajo la dirección de Mabel Alarcón, ha sido de vital importancia para la creación de nuevos comercios en la ciudad y para el fortalecimiento de los ya existentes.

Su modo de operación es tan amigable que de ahí se justifica la demanda que tiene en cada fecha de inscripción que se lanza, para capacitar a los comerciantes que con su trabajo están engrandeciendo a la ciudad de Omaha.

Cada una de las clases impartidas cubren las necesidades de los alumnos, permitiéndoles un contacto directo con un selecto grupo de profesionales que acuden para compartir sus conocimientos.

Por ello, el programa de micro negocio ha causado el impacto necesario que ha hecho posible que sea reconocida su labor, tal cual acaba de ocurrir. En hora buena.

EL 20 DE MARZO, EN LAS INSTALACIONES DEL CONSULADO, SE LLEVÓ A CABO LA CEREMONIA OFICIAL DE LANZAMIENTO DEL CAPÍTULO NEBRASKA-IOWA DE LA RED GLOBAL DE MEXICANOS CALIFICADOS EN EL EXTERIOR. Se informa que el pasado 20 de marzo se llevó a cabo en las instalaciones del Consulado de México en Omaha, la ceremonia del lanzamiento oficial del Capítulo Nebraska-Iowa de la Red Global de Mexicanos Calificados en el Exterior. En su etapa inicial, el Capítulo Nebraska-Iowa cuenta con miembros de la Universidad de Creighton, de la Universidad de Nebraska-Lincoln, de la Universidad de Nebraska-Omaha y del Metro Community College. Este Capítulo es presidido por el Dr. José Miguel Lemus, profesor de Idiomas Modernos y Literatura de la Universidad de Creighton; la Vicepresidencia es ocupada por el Dr. Armando de Alba, profesor del Colegio de Salud Pública en el Centro Médico de la Universidad de Nebraska, y quien ha tenido un destacado papel en la Unidad Médica a cargo de la biocontención del virus del Ébola.

La Cónsul Titular, Guadalupe Sánchez, se dirigió a la audiencia para transmitir el propósito de esta iniciativa, haciendo énfasis en la importancia que tiene para nuestro Gobierno el mantener un estrecho vínculo con la diáspora calificada, así como el impulso de programas de vinculación permanente.

Asimismo, la Cónsul señaló que la Red Global MX impulsa la creación de proyectos, el fortalecimiento de redes profesionales y otras acciones que favorecen el desarrollo socioeconómico de los mexicanos en el exterior, su identidad nacional, así como el posicionamiento internacional de México en la economía del conocimiento, al tiempo que representa un importante puente de comunicación entre México y las instituciones gubernamentales, socioeconómicas y educativas del país en el que residen.

El Presidente del Capítulo, Dr. José Miguel Lemus, realizó una presentación sobre el proyecto inicial del capítulo, el cual está basado en la elaboración de un “Manual para el diseño de programas de aprendizaje a través del Servicio Comunitario – Service Learning”. El objetivo del proyecto será mantener el idioma español entre los inmigrantes mexicanos como un instrumento estratégico para facilitar la cooperación empresarial, académica, científica y tecnológica con México en particular y América Latina en general.

OPS PRESENTACION DE DOCUMENTAL EN LA ESCUELA MILLER PARK ELEMENTARY La escuela Miller Park Elementary será la sede para la presentación del documental titulado El Amor de las Escuelas Públicas de Nebraska, “Considerando las Alternativas”. Esto ocurrirá el día Miércoles, 15 de abril, de 6:30 a 8:30pm., en la sala de usos múltiples de la escuela.

SOBRE EL DOCUMENTAL Producido por Nebraska Loves Public Schools (NElovesPS), la película explora la reforma educativa y proporciona una comprensión del panorama actual de la educación pública en Nebraska. Esta presentación de una hora proporciona a los espectadores una comprensión equilibrada de las escuelas que reciben fondos públicos a las que son privadas, para ver que se puede mejorar. Ahí participán los partidarios de las escuelas autónomas, los maestros de las escuelas públicas y los administradores, miembros de las legislaturas, la Junta de Educación de Nebraska y lo más importante, se presenta la historia de un padre de familia que se mueve a través del sistema educativo.
