UNA GRAN MAYORÍA DE LOS LATINOS EN LOS EE.UU. QUE HABLAN INGLÉS

A

lrededor de uno de cada diez adultos latinos en los EE.UU. (62%) hablan inglés o son bilingües, esto de acuerdo con un análisis de la Encuesta Nacional de Latinos 2013 del Pew Research Center. Los latinos en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica se separan en tres grupos en cuanto a su uso del idioma: 36% son bilingües, 25% utilizan principalmente el idioma inglés y 38% utilizan principalmente el idioma español. Entre aquellos que hablan el idioma inglés, 59% son bilingües.

Los latinos adultos que son hijos de padres inmigrantes tienen mayor tendencia a ser bilingües. Entre este grupo, 50% son bilingües, según lo muestra nuestra encuesta del 2013. En el 2012, los latinos con padres inmigrantes (definidos como quienes nacieron fuera de los EE.UU. o que nacieron en Puerto Rico) conformaban alrededor de casi la mitad (48%) de todos los latinos nacidos en los EE.UU. En comparación, una tercera parte (35%) de los inmigrantes latinos son bilingües, al igual que una cuarta parte (23%) de aquellos con padres nacidos en los EE.UU. El bilingüismo generalizado tiene el potencial de afectar a las futuras generaciones de latinos, una población que se encuentra entre las de más rápido crecimiento en la nación. Nuestra encuesta del 2011 mostró que para los adultos latinos es importante tanto la habilidad de hablar inglés cómo la de hablar español. Un 87% dijo que los inmigrantes latinos necesitan aprender inglés para tener éxito. su conocimiento del idioma inglés. El bilingüismo está ligado a la edad. Alrededor del 42% de los latinos entre 18 a 29 años de edad son bilingües. Ese porcentaje baja a una tercera parte para los latinos entre 30 a 49 años de edad y en los de entre 50 a 64 años de edad, pero el porcentaje sube de nuevo a un 40% entre las personas de 65 o más años.

Debido en parte al bilingüismo, en 2013 el español fue el idioma que más se hablaba en los EE.UU. (distinto al idioma inglés), utilizado por 35.8 millones de latinos en los EE.UU., además de 2.6 millones personas no latinas. En general, tres de cada cuatro latinos (73%) de 5 o más años de edad español en sus hogares cuando se incluye a quienes son bilingües.

Dados los cambios demográficos esperados, ¿cuál es el futuro del uso del idioma entre los latinos en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica? De acuerdo con las proyecciones de la Oficina del Censo, el porcentaje de latinos que solamente hablan inglés en su hogar incrementará de un 26% en el 2013 a un 34% en el 2020. Durante este periodo de tiempo, el porcentaje de quienes hablan español en su hogar disminuirá del 73% al 66%.

Y como una señal de los tiempos, el spanglish, un híbrido informal de ambos idiomas, es utilizado ampliamente por los latinos de entre 16 a 25 años de edad. Entre estos jóvenes latinos, un 70% reportó utilizar el spanglish, de conformidad con un análisis que realizamos en el 2009.

bout six-in-ten U.S. adult Hispanics (62%) speak English or are bilingual, according to an analysis of the Pew Research Center’s 2013 National Survey of Latinos. Hispanics in the United States break down into three groups when it comes to their use of language: 36% are bilingual, 25% mainly use English and 38% mainly use Spanish.

Among those who speak English, 59% are bilingual.

Latino adults who are the children of immigrant parents are most likely to be bilingual. Among this group, 50% are bilingual, according to our 2013 survey. As of 2012, Latinos with immigrant parents (defined as those born outside the U.S. or those born in Puerto Rico) made up roughly half (48%) of all U.S.-born Hispanics. Widespread bilingualism has the potential to affect future generations of Latinos, a population that is among the fastest growing in the nation. Our 2011 survey showed that Latino adults valued both the ability to speak English and to speak Spanish.

Fully 87% said Latino immigrants need to learn English to succeed. At the same time, nearly all (95%) said it is important for future generations of U.S. Hispanics to speak Spanish.

Respondents rated their ability to carry on a conversation in Spanish and how well they can read a book or newspaper written in Spanish. The same questions are posed about their Englishspeaking ability. Bilingualism is linked to age. Some 42% of Hispanics ages 18 to 29 are bilingual. That share falls to about a third among Hispanics ages 30 to 49 and ages 50 to 64, but rises again, to 40%, among those ages 65 and older.

EL MUSEO LATINO PRESENTA

UNA EXHIBICION

uando humedece una estampilla para enviar una carta por correo, ¿alguna vez observa la estampilla y piensa que es arte?

Si no lo hace, tal vez cambie de parecer después de revisar la más nueva exhibición de El Museo Latino, llamada MAÍZ, la cual estará disponible hasta su fin el 30 de octubre.

El Museo Latino trabaja junto con el Museo de Filatelia en Oaxaca, México, para presentar el trabajo de 24 artista - 12 de Omaha y 12 de Oaxaca.

“El Museo de Filatelia es el único museo de estampillas en América Latina que cuenta con una colección de estampillas internacionales.

Las estampillas son la base de esta exhibición”, explicó Magdalena García, Directora Ejecutiva para El Museo Latino.

En Omaha, los artistas fueron invitados a participar en base a su disponibilidad. García dijo que todos son artistas conocidos por el museo y cuyo trabajo habían podido ver anteriormente. Querían saber cuáles artistas estaban interesados para poder crear el trabajo necesario en el tiempo establecido para ello. García comentó que durante este proceso se realizaron muchas llamadas y se enviaron un gran número de emails.

Una vez seleccionados, los artistas escogieron una de cuatro imágenes agrandadas de estampillas. Se les pidió que crearan un nuevo trabajo de arte a partir de dichas imágenes. Las impresiones agrandadas fueron enviadas a El Museo Latino. Mientras más pronto lograba llegar un artista al museo, mayor era la selección de imágenes disponibles.

Cada artista tomó la imagen de la estampilla que escogió y la re-imaginó en una nueva pieza de arte. Las obras presentadas fueron realizadas

en acuarelas, lápiz, pinturas de aceite y acrílicas, pinturas color pastel, tinta y plumones.

García dijo que las obras son emocionantes pues cada artista imprimió su creatividad de una manera diferente. Incluso cada pieza es de tamaño distinto.

“Algunos artistas trabajaron con toda el área disponibles y algunos decidieron hacer trabajos más pequeño. La pieza más pequeña es una imagen del tamaño de una estampilla.

Visualmente, resulta muy interesante apreciar el trabajo que hicieron con las técnicas aplicadas”, dijo García.

Aunque comenzaron con ciertas restricciones, los artistas tuvieron mucha libertad para hacer lo que quisieron con las imágenes.

Todas las obras de arte de los artistas de Omaha y de Oaxaca fueron integradas a la exhibición. “Todos los artistas están unificados por el tema del maíz. Con eso fue con lo que comenzaron y partieron de ahí para inspirarse”, dijo García.

Ella dijo que cada artista es identificado en la exhibición para que las personas sepan quien trabajó en cada pieza. García dijo que tener todas las piezas mezcladas crea una mejor exhibición y hace que los visitantes al museo puedan entender de mejor manera la idea detrás de todo.

Esta es una colorida exposición en una colorida galería con paredes blancas, rojas y anaranjadas que contrastan con piezas brillantes y visualmente impresionantes.

Las estampillas originales también estarán en exhibición para que las personas puedan ver desde dónde partieron los artistas para crear sus obras de arte. Esta serie de estampillas en particular se llama Maíz de México y cuenta con imágenes de maíz.

García está emocionada de poder llevar estas obras de arte a la comunidad durante todo el año y no solamente durante el Cinco de Mayo o durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Cabe mencionar que durante este año El Museo Latino celebró su aniversario número veintidós, como uno de los 12 museos latinos en el país.

Como fundadora del museo, García está muy orgullosa de lo que se ha logrado: “Abrimos nuestras puertas durante todo el año. Esta exhibición brinda al público la oportunidad de ver el trabajo de artistas locales e internacionales mientras aprenden algo más de América Latina y del trabajo que realizamos en Omaha”.

El Museo Latino ofrece arte desde las formas tradicionales hasta las contemporáneas.

Cuando la exhibición MAÍZ acabe en Omaha, ésta viajará a Oaxaca. Para algunos de los artistas del Estado de Nebraska, esta será la primera vez que su arte será parte de una exhibición en otro país. Las colaboraciones como estas ofrecen a los artistas la oportunidad de exponer su trabajo ante nuevos públicos, además de poder traer a Omaha obras de arte de otros países para que los visitantes puedan experimentarlas y disfrutar de ellas.

García espera que las personas visiten la exhibición pues hay muy buena información que conocer. En Oaxaca, las personas están aprendiendo sobre la importancia del maíz en Nebraska, en donde somos el tercer mayor productor de etanol. García dijo que el maíz es una gran parte de lo que se sucede en Nebraska.

El maíz tiene una historia que llega a las personas de la era precolombina y ha tomado una ruta interesante para llegar a nosotros. El Museo Latino cuenta con un antropólogo cultural que escribió algunos de los textos que acompañan el arte en las exhibiciones. Eso incluye una exploración sobre cómo el maíz ha pasado por todo el mundo, de manera similar a como sucede con la comunidad de inmigrantes.

“Esta fuente alimenticia que es básica en Mesoamérica también ha sido parte del mundo, siendo elemental en muchos lugares, al igual que sucede en Nebraska. Y ocurre que es el centro de esta exhibición”, dijo García.

erhaps more than any geographic quadrant of the city, South Omaha owns the richest legacy as a livestock-meatpacking industry hub and historic home to new arrivals fixated on the American Dream.

Everyone with South O ties has a story.

When soWhen you lick a stamp to mail a letter do you ever look at the stamp and think of it as art? If not, you might just change your mind after checking out El Museo Latino’s newest exhibit, MAIZ, on view through Oct. 30.

El Museo Latino partners with Museo de Filatelia in Oaxaca, Mexico to present artwork from 24 artists, 12 from Omaha and 12 from Oaxaca.

“The Museo de Filatelia is the only stamp museum in Latin America that has an international collection of postage stamps. And stamps are the basis of this exhibit,” explained Magdalena Garcia, Executive Director for El Museo Latino.

In Omaha, artists were invited to participate based on their availability. Garcia said these were all artists the museum knew of and whose work they had seen in the past. They wanted to know which artists were interested and would be able to create the work in the allotted timeframe. Garcia said this process involved a lot of calls and emails.

Once selected, artists chose one of four enlarged graphic postage stamp images and were then tasked to create a new work of art from it. The printed enlargements were sent to El Museo Latino. The sooner the artists were able to make it to the museum, the bigger selection they had among the images.

Each artist took their graphic postage stamp image and reimagined it into a new piece of art.

Media range from watercolor, pencils, oils and acrylics to pastels, ink and markers.

Garcia said the pieces are exciting because each artist conveyed their creativity in a different way.

Even the sizes vary amongst the artworks.

“Some artists worked with the whole paper and some cut it back. The smallest piece is the image size of the stamp. Visually it’s really interesting what they did and the media they used,” said Garcia.

Though they started with certain restrictions, the artists had a lot of freedom to do what they wanted with the images.

All of the works from the Omaha and Oaxaca artists are integrated together throughout the exhibition, “All of the artists are unified by the theme of corn. That’s what they started with and then took it from there, doing whatever inspired them,” Garcia said.

She said each artist is identified in the exhibit so people will know where they are from. Garcia said keeping all the pieces intermixed creates a better flow aesthetically and gives museum visitors a better sense of cohesiveness.

This is a colorful exhibit in a colorful gallery that boasts white walls, red walls and orange walls contrasting with works that are bright and visually stunning.

The original postage stamps will be on display as well so people can see what the artists started with for their works. This particular series of stamps is called Maiz of Mexico and features images of corn.

Garcia is excited to bring artwork to the community all year long, not just on Cinco de Mayo or during Hispanic Heritage Month. El Museo Latino celebrated its 22nd anniversary earlier this year and is one of only 12 Latino museums in the country.

And as the founder of the museum, Garcia is extremely proud of that, “We open our doors

to all throughout the year. This exhibit provides the public with the opportunity to view local and international artists’ work and learn a little bit about Latin America and the work we do here in Omaha.”

El Museo Latino offers art from the contemporary to the traditional in a variety of forms. When MAIZ finishes in Omaha, it will travel to Oaxaca.

For some of the Nebraska artists involved in the exhibit, this will be their first time exhibiting in another country. Partnerships like this one offer artists exposure to new audiences and bring work from other countries to Omaha for visitors here to experience and enjoy.

Garcia hopes people will come and see the exhibition because there are a lot of good bits of information. In Oaxaca, people are learning about the importance of corn here in Nebraska, where we are the third largest producer of ethanol. Garcia said corn is a big part of what Nebraska is all about.

Corn has a history that traces back to the preColombian people and it has taken an interesting route to get to us. El Museo Latino has a cultural anthropologist who wrote some of the text that accompanies the artwork in the exhibit. This includes an exploration of how corn has moved all over the world much like the immigrant community.

“This food source that’s basic to Mesoamerica has also been part of the world and a staple in many places and is very much a part of Nebraska.

And it just happens to be the center of this exhibit,” said Garcia.

Sergio dévora DIRIGE OMAHA NOTICIAS, UN ESPACIO INFORMATIVO SIN PRECEDENTES

Las oportunidades siempre hay que tomarlas. No importa si aparecen en tu camino sin pensarlo, o si finalmente las consigues después de haber trabajo mucho buscándolas”, dijo el Director de Omaha Noticias, Sergio Dévora Nájera.

Originario de Miguel Auza, Zacatecas, Dévora Nájera ha tomado todos los retos que se le han presentado, construyendo con ellos una exitosa carrera en los medios de comunicación.

“Todo comenzó cuando vine a los Estados Unidos para pasar unas vacaciones con mi familia y les dije a mis padres que deseaba estar un tiempo aquí para aprender el idioma - explicó Dévora Nájera-, pero al final me quedé a vivir en Wichita (Kansas), por lo que considero a ésa ciudad como mi segunda casa”.

Apasionado del fútbol e interesado en los acontecimientos que hacen historia a nivel mundial, Dévora Nájera inició su preparación profesional estudiando comunicación: “Pero a sugerencia de una persona que me hizo ver que a mi se me facilitaban los idiomas, me cambié de carrera y terminé graduándome en el 2011 de Wichita State University con una Licenciatura en Idiomas, enfocándome en el español y el francés (vivió en Francia becado), y con un grado como asociado en italiano”.

Para ése entonces, Dévora Nájera ya había ingresado a algunas de las plataformas informativas más significativas de la región: “Todo surgió cuando aún estaba en la preparatoria y una diputada estatal me invitó a colaborar con ella como su enlace legislativo para la comunidad latina”.

La diputada le pidió que se encargara de traducir al español la columna quincenal que entregaba a un medio impreso, mismo en el terminaron por invitarlo a participar: “Comencé como reportero y después ascendí a asistente del editor, hasta llegar a ser el editor”.

El hecho de escribir para periódicos como Tiempos y posteriormente El Sol de Wichita, abrió las puertas para que Dévora Nájera ingresara a la radio, con un programa semanal de dos horas llamado El Show Internacional en el que presentaba música de su propia colección en español, inglés, portugués e italiano.

Años después, en el 2005, Azteca América de Wichita le concedió un espacio en la televisión: “Durante unos 4 años estuve

en un programa de revista donde presentábamos noticias y deportes, y me sentía muy cómodo realizándolo”.

Sin embargo sucedió que la estación de radio donde también formaba parte, dio un giro musical cambiando de formato, lo que orilló a Dévora Nájera a solicitar empleo en Radio Lobo (KYQQ/106.5 FM) en la misma ciudad de Wichita: “Pero sólo me ofrecieron un puesto de medio tiempo, al que terminé por renunciar”.

Durante ésos meses, el destacado locutor mexicano conoció a RosAnna Salcido, quien actualmente ocupa la posición de Gerente General de Radio Lobo (KBBX-FM/97.7 Nebraska CityOmaha), y quien le propuso hacerse cargo de un ambicioso proyecto informativo, estructurado a partir de que la estación fuera adquirida el año pasado, por Flood Broadcasting of Omaha.

“Me entrevisté con el dueño (Michael Flood), quien me explicó cómo serían las operaciones de

la radio y me interesé muchísimo porque Omaha Noticias es algo completamente nuevo. Yo no había visto algo por estilo ni aquí ni en los estados que conozco. Así que acepté el puesto de Director de Noticias y el 28 de octubre del 2014 fue mi primer día oficial. Sin duda es un gran reto por lo que estuve en entrenamiento intensivo varias semanas en Norfolk, otras semanas en Columbus, y fue hasta mediados de enero cuando me mudé definitivamente a Omaha”.

Al lado de la reportera Yanira García, Dévora Nájera está creando una mayor conciencia ciudadana entre la población hispana, acostumbrada a escuchar la radio como un medio si bien entretenido, no precisamente de carácter noticioso.

“La parte principal de ésta propuesta es que va a beneficiar a la comunidad hispana de una manera impresionante, porque estamos presentándoles toda la información local, con lo que las personas siempre están al tanto de todo lo que pasa sin perder detalles”, expresó el joven director quien está orgulloso de la respuesta positiva que se comprueba a través del apoyo en las redes sociales.

Pese a ser un sistema informativo de reciente creación, Omaha Noticias lo mismo ha cubierto el alcance político del informe de gobierno de la alcaldesa Jean Stothert y la audiencia pública en el capitolio del estado para la propuesta LB623, que las repercusiones sociales de crímenes como el de la Familia Marinero y la Oficial de Policía Kerrie Orozco (q.e.p.d.), con extremo profesionalismo e imparcialidad.

“No ha sido fácil pero tenemos convenios con varios burós de noticias como el Columbus News Team y el diario Omaha World- Herald (la empresa radiofónica igualmente cuenta con estaciones en Nebraska City y Norfolk que comparten información), lo cual nos beneficia bastante”, señaló Dévora Nájera.

Las cápsulas informativas que Radio Lobo brinda a lo largo del día y los videos con los reportajes que se pueden apreciar en la página en internet, son muy comentados y han sido recibidos con beneplácito por parte de la comunidad hispana e incluso, anglosajona.

“Nuestro deseo, es llegar a presentar un noticiero y por eso estamos trabajando muy duro y sé que lo vamos a lograr”, concluyó Dévora Nájera quien también forma parte de las reservas de la Fuerza Área norteamericana.

breves SOÑADORES CERCA DE LOGRAR LICENCIA DE MANEJO Los senadores estatales dieron la aprobación final, el pasado jueves, a la propuesta de ley que terminará con la situación que el estado de Nebraska sea el único en la unión americana de no otorgar licencias de manejo a los hijos de inmigrantes indocumentados.

El gobernador Pete Ricketts, quien se opone a dar beneficios a los inmigrantes indocumentados, dijo el pasado jueves que todavía no había tomado la decisión de vetar o no la propuesta legislativa LB623.

Si el gobernador firma o no el veto la legislación, esta entrará en efecto después de cinco días, ya que pasó con una clausula de emergencia.

La propuesta de ley permitirá que los jóvenes inmigrantes que se benefician del programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia, puedan calificar para obtener licencias. El Centro Laboral y los Jóvenes de Nebraska en Acción se alegraron de anunciar la aprobación de la LB623 con 34 votos a favor y 9 en contra, con 2 abstenciones.

Ahora la propuesta de ley pasará a la oficina del gobernador Ricketts. Con los 34 votos a favor, no podrá vetar la propuesta de ley. El Centro Laboral agradeció a las organizaciones como Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos (JFON), Appleseed, Cattlemen Association y otros. “Soñadores, ustedes pronto tendrán su propia licencia de manejo de Nebraska!”, anunció el Centro Laboral.

ASOCIACIÓN DE COMERCIO INTERNACIONAL CENTRAL EN NEBRASKA Como parte de las actividades de promoción económica y comercial, la Cónsul Titular Guadalupe Sánchez Salazar, participó el pasado 13 de mayo en la Conferencia Anual de la Asociación de Comercio Internacional del Medio Oeste (MITA, por sus siglas en inglés), en la que tuvo oportunidad de transmitir a empresarios y autoridades estadounidenses y ante la presencia del gobernador de Nebraska, Peter Ricketts, la importancia de la relación comercial entre Estados Unidos y México.

Toda vez que el objetivo consistió en apremiar y promover la relación comercial bilateral existente entre Nebraska y México, la Cónsul Sánchez destacó que solamente en 2014, la actividad comercial entre ambas entidades, sumó un total de 1,6 mil millones de dólares, generando un aumento del 50.7% del volumen de nuestras exportaciones, y colocando así a México como el cuarto proveedor de bienes de este estado y en el segundo mercado exportador de Nebraska.

Asimismo, la Cónsul Sánchez hizo énfasis en las condiciones favorables del mercado en México que representarían oportunidades susceptibles de ser aprovechadas por empresas en ambos lados de la frontera, en particular, por el ambiente propicio a la inversión privada creado por las reformas estructurales de México en el sector de la energía y las telecomunicaciones.

Finalmente, la Titular subrayó la necesidad de seguir explorando oportunidades de negocios entre México- Nebraska y México- Iowa, estados que conforman la circunscripción del Consulado de México en Omaha.

RUNS OMAHA NOTICIAS, AN UNPRECEDENTED NEWS SYSTEM

We must always accept new opportunities. It doesn’t matter of they show up in your path out of nowhere, or if you final get it after a lot of hard work”, said Sergio Devora Najera, Director of Omaha Noticias.

Originally from Miguel Auza, Zacatecas, Devora Najera has taken on all the challenges in his life in order to build a successful career in media.

“It all started when I came to the United States to spend some vacation time with my family. I told my parents I wanted to spend some time here to learn the language,” said Devora Najera, “but in the end I went to live in Wichita (Kansas), which is why I consider that city as my second home.”

Devora Najera, a passionate soccer fan with a keen interest in events that become part of history around the world, started to prepare by studying in communications: “But after someone made me realize I had a way for learning languages, I started to study something else and in 2011 I graduated from Wichita State University with a Bachelor’s in Language, with a focus on Spanish and French (having lived in France with a scholarship), with an associate’s degree in Italian.”

By then Devora Najera had already worked at some of the most important news media platforms in the region: “It all happened while I was still in high school, and a congresswoman invited me to collaborate with her as legislative liaison with the Latino community.”

The congresswoman asked him to take care of translating into Spanish a biweekly column which was printed at a media outlet, and said media outlet eventually invited him to work there: “I started as a reporter and I was later promoted to assistant editor, until I made it all the way to editor.”

Writing for newspapers such as Tiempos and later for El Sol de Wichita opened the doors for Devora Najera to work on the radio with a weekly two-hour show called El Show Internacional where he presented music from his own collection in Spanish, English, Portuguese and Italian.

him a TV slot: “For around four years I was in a variety show where we talked about news events and sports, and I felt great doing that.”

However, the radio station where he worked changed its format and this made Devora Najera decide to apply for a job at Radio Lobo (KYQQ/106.5 FM) in Wichita: “But I was only offered a part-time job, so I eventually quit.”

During those months he got a chance to meet RosAnna Salcido, who currently works as General Manager for Radio Lobo (KBBX-FM/97.7 Nebraska City-Omaha), who offered him to take over an ambitious news project, from when the news station was bought last year by Flood Broadcasting of Omaha.

“I got an interview with the owner (Michael Flood), who explained to me how the radio station would be run and that definitely got my attention because Omaha Noticias is something that is completely new. I had never seen anything like it either here or at any of the states I know. So I took the job as News Director, and I started to work there on October 24, 2014. This is definitely a huge challenge, which is why I attended a training seminar for several weeks at Norfolk, as well as over at Colombus. I didn’t move to Omaha until mid-January.”

Along with reporter Yanira Garcia, Devora Najera is raising the awareness of the Latino population who was used to listening to the radio as a source of entertainment and not as a source for news coverage: “The main thing about this project is that it will greatly benefit the Latino community because we’ll be presenting local news to keep people posted on everything that is going on around them,” said the young Director who is very proud of the positive reaction to the project on social media.

Even though this is a fairly new project, Omaha Noticias has already covered major events such as Mayor Jean Stothert’s annual report, the public hearing for Proposition LB623, along with reporting on the social repercussions of the great work of police officer Kerrie Orozco (R.I.P.), or of the crimes of the Marinero Family, all with the utmost professionalism in an unbiased presentation.

“It hasn’t been easy, but we have several agreements with news bureaus such as the Columbus News Team and the Omaha World- Herald (the company also has stations in Nebraska City and Norfolk who share the information), which has helped us a lot,” said Devora Najera.

The news flash pieces presented by Radio Lobo during the day and the videos with news reports can be accessed at the web page, and the Latino community, and the community as a whole, has definitely shown they like what they’ve seen.

“We want to present a newscast which is why we’re working so hard, and I know we can get there,” concluded Devora Najera, who is also part of the reserves for the U.S. Air Force.”

DREAMERS SO CLOSE TO GET THEIR DRIVER’S LICENSES State lawmakers gave final approval Thursday to a bill ending Nebraska’s status as the only state to deny driver’s licenses to the children of illegal immigrants.

Gov. Pete Ricketts, who opposes providing benefits to illegal immigrants, said Thursday he has not decided if he would veto Legislative Bill 623.

If the governor neither signs nor vetoes the legislation, it will take effect after five days because it passed with an emergency clause.

The bill allows young immigrants participating in the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to qualify for licenses. The Heartland Workers Center and Young Nebraskan in Action were happy to announce LB 623 passed with the vote of 34 to 9 with two members not voting. Now the bill goes to Governor Ricketts desk. With 34 votes, he won’t be able to veto the bill. HWC expressed their gratitude to the Nebraska Unicameral for passing the bill. They also gave thanks to organizations like Justice For Our Neighbors, Appleseed, Cattlemen Association and others. “DREAMERs, you will soon have your very own Nebraska State license!,” HWC posted.

MIDWEST INTERNATIONAL TRADE ASSOCIATION IN NEBRASKA In the realm of the activities focused on promoting the economic and commercial relations between Mexico and the United States, the Consul of Mexico in Omaha, Guadalupe Sánchez Salazar, participated in The Midwest International Trade Association (MITA): 2015 World Trade Conference celebrated on May 13, where she had the opportunity to convey to the entrepreneurs and government authorities the relevance of the economic and commercial relationship between Mexico-Nebraska and Mexico- Iowa.

During the conference, Consul Sánchez mentioned that based on information provided by the US Chamber of Commerce, some 6 million US jobs depend on trade with Mexico, which means $1 billion worth of goods and services traded between both Mexico and US in a single day. In respect to the commercial relationship between Mexico and Nebraska in 2014, it reached $1.6 billion dollars, showing an increase of 15.7 percent in exports to our country and an increase of 50.7 percent in imports of Nebraska from Mexico, which positions our country as the second largest export market of the state.

Additionally, Consul Guadalupe Sánchez called attention to the strategic actions taken by Iowa to foster their economic relationship with Mexico. In comparison with Nebraska, bilateral trade with Iowa reached $4.05 billion dollars in 2014, by opening a trade office in Mexico City and buying more products and sending more goods from and to our country, pointing out the possibilities that Nebraska has to reach at least the trade level Iowa has achieved with Mexico, and even look to improve it.

Finally, the Consul outlined the favorable conditions of the market in Mexico, which nowadays represents great opportunities for investment and also development for businesses at both sides of the border, mainly taking into consideration the structural reforms undertaken by Mexico in the energy and telecommunication sectors.
