Muchas personas no se dan cuenta de lo que significa obtener una licencia para conducir. Sí, ya puedo manejar un automóvil, pero también me hace sentir que tengo una identidad y que soy independiente”, dijo Fátima, una DREAMer de 24 años.

Fátima vino a los Estados Unidos, junto con su hermana menor, en el 1996 desde la Ciudad de México. Tenían seis y cuatro años, respectivamente. Después de 20 años en Nebraska, Fátima definitivamente considera a los EE.UU. como su hogar. La LB 623 finalmente fue aprobada por la legislatura de Nebraska, el 28 de mayo. Treinta y cuatro senadores votaron para anular el veto del Gobernador sobre la medida. Galen Hadley firmó la LB 623 y ésta entró en vigor el 29 de mayo.

Dicha norma permite a los DREAMer obtener una licencia para conducir. Los DREAMer son personas que fueron traídos a los EE.UU. antes de cumplir 16 años de edad, que no cuenten con antecedentes penales y que han vivido en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica desde el 15 de junio de 2007. Esto quiere decir que ahora es más fácil poder obtener un empleo e ir a la escuela.

Hasta este momento, Nebraska era el único estado de la unión americana que se había rehusado a dar licencias de conducir a los inmigrantes a quienes se les había otorgado el estado de acción diferida.

Fátima explicó que en ocasiones ella intentaba transladarse en camión, pero el camión llegaba

tarde o no llegaba. No saber nunca cuando eso pasaría, hacía más difícil que pudiera utilizar el transporte público para sus necesidades diarias.

“El transporte en Omaha no siempre llega a tiempo y cuando se vive con una agenda precisa, eso puede causar problemas”, nos dijo.

Fátima dice estar muy agradecida con quienes le ayudaron a ir y regresar de citas, del trabajo y de la escuela, pero en ocasiones era muy difícil coordinar su agenda con la de esas personas.

Para ella, tener una licencia no solamente significa tener más libertad, significa que tiene un documento que le valida. Comenta que siempre tuvo su documentación mexicana, pero que nunca fue aceptada por no haber sido emitida por el gobierno de los EE.UU. “Así que cuando tuve suficiente edad para tener un contrato de teléfono, no pude obtener uno pues no tenía nada para probar mi identidad”, nos comenta.

Los permisos de trabajo tampoco eran aceptados pues también eran emitidos por el gobierno mexicano. Fátima dijo que no contar con la documentación correcta le hacía sentirse deshumanizada. Fue difícil para ella encontrar un doctor, y poder estar con sus amigos divirtiéndose, también era un reto al no contar con una identificación. “Ser aceptada en la comunidad, es lo que significa para mí tener una licencia”, nos dijo.

Fátima fue una de varias jóvenes defensoras que se unieron a Young Nebraskans in Action.

Trabajaron junto con la DREAMers Coalition (personas jóvenes que querían obtener sus licencias) para persuadir a los legisladores para que aprobasen la propuesta de ley. El trabajo sobre este proyecto comenzó en noviembre de 2014.

“Yo trabajo de tiempo completo en un banco.

Pago mis impuestos y voy a la escuela. Abogar por la LB 623 ha sido mi propósito principal durante los últimos dos años y medio, y por fin hemos tenido éxito”, dijo Fátima.

Lucero Aguilar, Organizadora del Heartland Workers Center o Centro Laboral, dijo que fue genial poder ver a tantos jóvenes involucrados en abogar por el proyecto de ley.

“Varios senadores y organizaciones se unieron para poder hacer que esto fuera posible, pero sin la continua persistencia de los jóvenes defensores, quienes siempre estaban en los debates y quienes se hacían ver, no creo que esta nueva medida hubiese sido aprobada”, comentó ella.

Aguilar cree que cuando los jóvenes se unen bajo un propósito en verdad, pueden hacer una gran diferencia. Ella habla sobre cómo ha escuchado muchas historias maravillosas desde que el proyecto de ley fue aprobado, de las personas que ya han ido al DMV para obtener sus licencias. El Heartland Workers Center está ofreciendo una serie de talleres para ayudarles en sus esfuerzos. Estos incluyen temas como Driver’s 101 (Conductores 101) para que las personas conozcan sobre las precauciones al manejar, para

cuando obtengan sus licencias. Es algo que el centro laboral continuará ofreciendo durante un largo tiempo. Fátima actualmente estudia ciencias políticas en UNO. Ella espera un día lograr convertirse en senadora estatal.

“He aprendido mucho sobre el proceso legislativo gracias a este proyecto de ley. Por ahora estoy concentrada en terminar mis estudios, conectarme con muchas personas y convertirme en senadora estatal en algunos años”, nos dijo.

Aguilar mencionó que el Heartland Workers Center se encuentra ahora en el proceso de visitar los hogares en el Sur de Omaha, para preguntar a las personas sobre cuáles son sus mayores problemas para que así el centro pueda agregar esa información a su base de datos. Aguilar y su equipo de trabajo esperan poder hacer algo, para enfrentar algunos de estos problemas junto con el ayuntamiento.

Comentó que todos son bienvenidos para ir y ayudar. Las reuniones en ocasiones se realizan cada semana o cada dos semanas. Su sitio web cuenta con más información.

“Con el trabajo sobre la LB 623, las personas se dieron cuenta que las personas jóvenes SÍ pueden marcar una diferencia”, dijo Aguilar.

Many people don’t realize what getting a driver’s license means. Yes, I can drive a car but it also gives me a sense of identity and independence,” said Fatima, a 24-year old DREAMer. Fatima came to the United States from Mexico City, Mexico with her younger sister in 1996. They were six and four at the time, respectively. After 20 years in Nebraska, Fatima definitely considers the US her home.

LB 623 finally passed in the Nebraska legislature May 28. 34 senators voted to override a Governor veto on the measure. Speaker Galen Hadley signed LB 623 and it went into effect on May 29.

The bill allows DREAMers, those who were brought to the US as children before their 16th birthday, who have no criminal record and who have lived in the United States since June 15, 2007, to obtain a driver’s license.

This means an easier time getting to work and school.

Up until now, Nebraska was the only state that had refused to allow immigrants with deferred action status to obtain a driver’s license.

Fatima explained she would sometimes try to take the bus and either the bus would be late or wouldn’t show up. Never knowing when

They worked with the DREAMers Coalition (young people who wanted to get their licenses) to actively work together to persuade the legislature to pass the bill. Work began in November 2014.

“I work at a bank full time. I pay taxes and I go to school so advocating for LB 63 has been my main focus for the last two and a half years and we finally have success,” said Fatima.

Lucero Aguilar, Community Organizer at Heartland Workers Center, said it was great to see so many youth involved in advocating for the bill.

“A bunch of senators and organizations teamed up to make this possible but without the persistence of youth advocates always at debates and putting their faces out there, I am not sure this measure would have passed,” she said.

Aguilar believes when youth get together with a focused purpose they can make a big difference.

She said she’s heard so many wonderful stories since the billed passed from people who have already been down to the DMV to get their licenses. The Heartland Workers Center is offering a series of workshops to help them in their efforts. These include things like Driver’s 101 so people will know the precautions of the road when they go to get their licenses.

“The transportation in Omaha is not always timely and when you are living on a timely schedule, that can cause issues,” she said.

Fatima said she appreciated those who had helped get her to and from appointments, work and school but it was often difficult to coordinate her schedule with theirs.

For her, having a license not only means freedom but also means she finally has a document that can vouch for her. She said she had her Mexican documents but those were never accepted because they weren’t issued by the US government.

“So when I was old enough to get a phone contract, I still couldn’t because I didn’t have anything to prove my identity,” she said.

Work permits were often not accepted either even though they too were issued by the Mexican government. Fatima said it made her feel dehumanized not having the proper documentation.

She had a difficult time finding a doctor and just hanging out with her friends was also challenging without an ID “Being accepted into the community is what having a license means to me,” she said.

Fatima was one of several youth advocates who joined the Young Nebraskans in Action.

It’s something the center will continue to offer for awhile.

Fatima is currently a political science major at UNO. She hopes to become a state senator one day.

“I learned so much about the legislative process throughout this bill. So for now I am focused on getting through school, networking and becoming a state senator in a few years,” she said.

Aguilar said the Heartland Workers Center is now in the process of canvassing South Omaha residences and asking people what their biggest problems are so they can put that information into a database. Ultimately, Aguilar and her crew hope to do something to address some of these issues with the city council.

She said anyone is welcome to come out and help. Meetings are sometimes held weekly and sometimes bi-weekly. Their website has more information.

“With the work on LB 623, people realized that young people CAN make a difference,” said Aguilar.

La nueva instalación cuenta con un espacio de 30,000 pies cuadrados para ayudar a cubrir las necesidades de la clase pobre trabajadora quien cuenta con su apoyo. Incluye ocho toneladas de comida distribuida a través de su banco de alimentos cada semana.

Ese espacio es necesario para que Heartland Hope pueda servir a entre 200 a 400 personas con la ayuda anual de un total de 20,000 voluntarios.

En cuanto a las clases de administración de finanzas, estas brindan instrucciones sobre cómo poder trabajar con un presupuesto. Otras clases serán agregadas según se vuelvan aparentes otras necesidades.

“Entendemos que cuando alguien viene por comida probablemente hay otros recursos que necesita su familia para poder convertirse en autosuficientes”, dijo Salifou.

Heartland Hope distribuye su comida y ropa sin costo alguno a los clientes. El personal de trabajo durante el tour comentó que los objetos para niños en verdad se necesitan y que se aceptan donaciones. Esta organización trabaja junto con Toys for Tots y organiza Christmas in South O (Navidad en el Sur de Omaha).

Además de contar con un estacionamiento, lo cual es una buena mejora, el nuevo edificio cuenta con una plataforma de carga para la entrega de alimentos que vienen de varias tiendas de víveres, del Food Bank of the Heartland y de otras instituciones y personas que ofrecen su apoyo.

El cuarto de usos múltiples sirve almuerzos todos los días de la semana, además de ser el lugar para diversos eventos especiales. Todos son bienvenidos.

“Todos necesitan ayuda”, comentó un miembro del equipo de trabajo durante la recepción abierta.

Tras mudarse aquí, la ocasión fue celebrada con una recepción abierta, el 4 de junio, que atrajo una gran multitud que disfrutó de la comida y de los tours por las instalaciones. Según comenta Chelsea Salifou, Directora Ejecutiva de Heartland Hope Mission, no fue fácil cambiarse de instalación.

“Fue el resultado de muchas plegarias y del apoyo de la comunidad”, dijo Salifou.

“Comenzamos una campaña de colecta de capital y recibimos el apoyo de fundaciones, negocios, iglesias y particulares”.

Como un ministerio sin denominación, Heartland Hope se mudó unas cuantas cuadras al sur de su anterior ubicación en la calle Q, ¡pero vaya que se nota la diferencia!

“Este espacio nos permite estar cien por ciento enfocados en la elección de los clientes”, comentó Salifou. “Esto quiere decir que nuestros clientes pueden escoger todos sus alimentos, incluyendo carnes, productos agrícolas y productos lácteos, en base al tamaño de su familia”.

Los clientes que vienen por comida reciben un mensaje de aliento. Tal vez incluso se les cante la canción de “Feliz Cumpleaños” y se les entregue un pastel.

Un comprador personal lleva a los clientes por el área de despensa para asegurarse de que encuentren todo lo que necesitan. Se les brinda una semana de víveres en cada visita y hay voluntarios que proporcionan un servicio para llevar los víveres al automóvil del cliente.

El área de despensa se ha beneficiado de una subvención de WalMart que pagó por un montacargas y un cuarto congelador. El apoyo para Heartland Hope Mission llega de toda la comunidad.

“Este lugar nos brinda más espacio para ropa y artículos del hogar, los cuales son entregados de manera gratuita. También nos permite ofrecer clases sobre administración de finanzas, así como expandir

Los especialistas de servicio al cliente ayudan a dirigir a las personas a los recursos de la comunidad. La meta, según Heartland Hope, es prevenir que las familias pierdan sus hogares. Una ubicación adicional en Millard ayuda a apoyar el esfuerzo.

Heartland Hope es parte de la Hunger Collaborative, junto con Heart Ministry Center, Together y Food Bank of the Heartland.

Salifou define a la clase pobre trabajadora como: “Personas que trabajan pero no ganan lo suficiente, como para poder proveer lo necesario para sus familias”.

Las necesidades de estas personas están creciendo. “Antes de la Gran Recesión, 80 por ciento de los clientes venían una vez al año. Ahora el 50 por ciento viene una vez al año”, nos dijo. “Eso quiere decir que ha habido un incremento del 30 por ciento, en cuanto a las personas que necesitan ayuda con mayor frecuencia, para poder cumplir con las necesidades de sus familias”.

Salifou agregó que hay pocos trabajos de nivel inicial que paguen bien, como los trabajos en fábricas, por lo que enseñar a las personas habilidades laborales, para poder ganar un salario que les permita vivir dignamente, es algo que es cada día más importante.

“Además, en general, los salarios no han aumentado, mientras que el costo de vida sí lo ha hecho”, agregó. “Hay más personas ahora que están subempleadas”.

Según Salifou, el nuevo edificio hará una gran diferencia. “Estamos realizando un programa piloto para alimentos para niños en el edificio”, agregó. “Planeamos expandir los servicios y clases que ofrecemos, para eventualmente incluir habilidades laborales”.

Parece ser que el buen trabajo nunca termina. Los gimnastas tal vez se han ido, pero ha llegado algo de esperanza y eso es muy bueno.

Heartland Hope distributes its food and clothing at no charge to the clients. Staff on the tour said children’s items are especially needed and donations are accepted. The mission partners with Toys for Tots and hosts Christmas in South O. In addition to the parking lot, a welcome addition, the new building has a loading dock for food deliveries, which come from multiple grocery stores, the Food Bank of the Heartland and other generous supporters.

The multi-purpose room serves lunches weekdays and hosts special events. All are welcome.

“Help is needed by everyone,” pointed out one staffer during the open house.

United Health Care provides a weekly representative to help address Medicare and Medicaid applications.

Client service specialists help direct individuals to community resources. The goal, according to Heartland Hope, is to prevent families from becoming homeless. A satellite location in Millard supports the effort.

Heartland Hope is part of the Hunger Collaborative, with Heart Ministry Center, Together and Food Bank of the Heartland.

Salifou defines working poor as: “Individuals who work but do not earn enough to provide for their families.”

The needs of those individuals are growing.

“Before the Great Recession, 80 percent of clients came once a year. Now 50 percent come once a year,” she said. “That means we have an increase of 30 percent of people who need assistance more often to make ends meet for their families.”

Salifou added there are fewer entry level jobs that pay well, such as factory jobs, which has made teaching people job skills that allow them to earn a livable wage is becoming increasingly important.

“Additionally, in general, salaries have not increased while the cost of living has increased,” she added. “There are many more people who are now under-employed.”

The new building will make a huge difference, Salifou said.

“We are piloting an on-site meal program for children,” she added. “We plan on expanding our client services and classes offered and eventually adding job skills.”

The good work, it seems, is never done.

The gymnasts may be gone, but Hope has arrived – and that is a very good thing.

he gymnasts are gone at the old Sokol Hall in South Omaha, but Hope has arrived at 20th and U Streets.

The recent move was celebrated with an open house on June 4 that drew an overflow crowd for food and tours. That move was not a simple matter, according to Chelsea Salifou, Executive Director of Heartland Hope Mission.

“It was the result of a lot of prayer and community support,” Salifou said. “We started a capital campaign and received support from foundations, businesses, churches and individuals.”

A nondenominational ministry, Heartland Hope just moved a few blocks south of its previous Q Street location, but what a difference!

“This space allows us to be 100 percent client choice,” Salifou said. “That means that our clients get to choose all of their food including meat, produce and dairy products based on their family size.”

Clients who show up for food get an encouraging message. They may have “Happy Birthday” sung to them and get a cake.

A personal shopper takes the clients through the pantry area to make sure they find the items they need. A week’s worth of groceries is provided on each visit, and volunteers provide carryout service to the client’s car.

The pantry area benefited from a WalMart grant that paid for a fork lift and a walk-in freezer. Support for Heartland Hope Mission comes from across the community.

“This space provides more space for clothing and household items - all of which is distributed for free. It also allows us to offer financial classes and expand client services, where we meet oneon-one with clients and provide referrals and SNAP (food stamp) application assistance.”

The new facility has 30,000 square feet of space to help it address the needs of the many working poor who count on it for support. That includes 8 tons of food distributed through its food bank on a weekly basis.

That space is needed for the 200 to 400 people served weekly by Heartland Hope, with help from an annual total of 20,000 volunteers.

Those financial literacy classes provided instructions on how to work with a budget. Other courses will be added as new needs become apparent.

“We realize that when someone comes in for food there are probably other resources their family needs to become self-sufficient,” Salifou said.

UNA HISTORIA TAN LINDA COMO SU PROPIA PROTAGONISTA

l 27 de mayo en el salón de eventos del Livestock Exchange Building se presentó exitosamente el programa South Omaha Stories (Historias del Sur de Omaha), la continuación del proyecto Neighborhood Tapestries (Tapices del Vecindario) de este 2015, presentado dentro del marco de la Great Plains Theatre Conference (Conferencia de Teatro de las Grandes Planicies).

Las cuatro amenas “Historias del Sur de Omaha” se basaron en las experiencias de vida de destacados inmigrantes (3 mujeres y un hombre), que fueron orquestadas por el director neoyorquino Josh Hecht y recreadas con la pluma de talentosos dramaturgos como Scott Working, quien gracias a la acertada dirección de M. Michele Philips, contó anécdotas que al público le fascinaron. Una de ellas en particular fue La Historia de Lucy.

Originaria de Campeche, México, Lucero “Lucy” Aguilar llegó a Estados Unidos a los casi 5 años. La bella joven quien es la hija menor de una familia formada por 5 hermanos (3 hombres y 2 mujeres) reconoce que ahora, “sólo me quedan recuerdos vagos de mi país, me acuerdo un poco de mi casa, pero nada más”.

A sus 20 años, Lucy es la tercera de la familia quien terminará una carrera profesional en dos años más. Por el momento se mantiene muy ocupada con sus clases de administración en la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha y su trabajo en Heartland Workers Center (HWC): “Me incorporé a mediados de mayo y me encanta lo que hago porque se trata de organizar los eventos que vamos a ofrecer en la comunidad. Sergio Sosa (Director Ejecutivo de la organización), es un gran hombre. Cuando tienes la oportunidad de hablar con él, todo lo que te dice siempre es para sacar tus atributos más grandes, así que al estar a su lado, ¡sientes que eres capaz de todo!”

En esta semana, Lucy y sus compañeros estarán trabajando en un proyecto muy interesante: “Se tratará de realizar una encuesta para la comunidad, salir de casa en casa, preguntarle a la gente lo que le hace falta y lo que podemos hacer para cambiar su forma de vivir para bien”.

Mejorar su entorno es algo que motiva a Lucy diariamente: “Desde noviembre del año pasado, cuando me uní a Young Nebraskans in Action (antes llamado Dreamers Coalition), me siento empoderada al saber que soy parte del movimiento de jóvenes que estamos tratando de transformar a nuestra comunidad, y no sólo eso, sino que nos esforzamos por también

cambiar Nebraska y generar un futuro mejor para los jóvenes inmigrantes a nivel nacional”.

Y aunque Lucy se ha entrevistado los últimos meses con senadores y legisladores (incluyendo el actual gobernador Pete Rickets), ella está decidida a no seguir una carrera política: “Yo desde chiquilla me veo a futuro como una empresaria, abriendo mi propio negocio y manejando mi dinero. Mi sueño es tener una tienda de jugos orgánicos en el sur de Omaha y por eso lo que estoy haciendo en este momento es fortalecer mi crédito y checar cuáles bancos me pueden ayudar para hacer mi inversión”.

La tenaz activista planea continuar con la tarea educativa que se ha impuesto desde mayo a través de su colaboración con el HWC: “Tener un empleo como el que tengo, te abre los ojos y estar rodeada de gente que quiere lo mismo que tú, o sea crecer, ¡es maravilloso! Cuando participé en los debates sobre las diferentes propuestas de ley en la capital (Lincoln), me di cuenta que muchas personas, que por ejemplo se oponían a otorgarles las licencias de manejo a los jóvenes, lo hacían por ignorancia, así que el tener la posibilidad de explicarles la situación fue algo muy valioso”.

Gracias a que su estatus se ha legalizado por completo, en julio Lucy, su madre y casi todos sus hermanos, harán una visita a su país, después de 15 años de no pisar territorio mexicano: “Será una sorpresa, pero tengo mucho miedo porque yo salí de mi ciudad muy chiquita y no me van a reconocer, así que no sé cómo me tratarán. Pero a la vez estoy emocionada porque volveré a ver a mi papá, quien se regresó para allá desde hace tiempo”.

Como sea, la futura empresaria está muy agradecida con el momento que está viviendo: “Porque si no hubiera sido por mi mamá (Josefina Carrizales), yo no estaría en donde estoy. Ella estudió enfermería en México pero aquí no ha podido ejercer su profesión y trabaja en una empacadora de comida, pero nada la detiene. Ella nos ha sacado adelante a todos y por eso es mi mayor inspiración. La única vez que la he visto desesperada fue cuando su mamá se puso muy enferma y tuvo que regresarse a nuestro país. Yo tenía mucho miedo de que no regresara, pero lo hizo, no sé cómo, pero lo logró y ahora que ya es residente y nosotros también, eso es mi mayor bendición”.

GRADUACIÓN EN LA PRISIÓN La semana pasada, siete reclusos en la Penitenciaria Estatal de Nebraska recibieron sus diplomas de high school durante una ceremonia de graduación en la prisión de Lincoln. Otros 5 reclusos no pudieron asistir porque habían sido liberados, habían sido transferidos a otra prisión o estaban confinados en aislamiento por mala conducta.

La ceremonia, de las mas pequeñas en la reciente historia de la penitenciaria estatal, es el cúmulo del éxito para los reclusos inscritos en el programa de educación en prisiones estatales.

Después de una década de estancamiento en el crecimiento de programas educativos, la legislatura incrementó los fondos el año pasado como parte de los 5 millones de dólares en un esfuerzo para mejorar las oportunidades de los reclusos para evitar su regreso al crimen.

Uno de los programas, por parte del Metropolitan Community College en Omaha, está ofreciendo cursos de educación avanzada y consejeros de profesión a cerca de 300 reclusos. Otros ofrecen entrenamiento vocacional para trabajos en construcción de casas, almacenes de trabajo y operadores de montacargas.

EL GOBERNADOR SOLICITA DECLARACIÓN DE DESASTRES FEDERAL El Asistente del Gobernador Mike Foley, a nombre del Gobernador Pete Ricketts, quien se encuentra fuera del país en una misión comercial, entregó al Presidente una solicitud formal de declaración de desastres mayores en el evento de las tormentas severas que han caído en algunas partes de Nebraska. Los daños por la tormentas ocurridos por los fuertes vientos, lluvias severas y tornados que comenzaron el 2 de mayo.

De a cuerdo con la Agencia de Nebraska para el Manejo de Emergencias de Nebraska (NEMA), el mayor impacto ha sido en los caminos y los puentes, incluyendo 15 que fueron destruidos.

Los siguientes condados han sido declarados en estado de emergencia: Cass, Dundy, Gage, Jefferson, Lincoln, Lancaster, Morrill, Nuckolls, Otoe, Saline, Saunders y Thayer. “La Historia de Lucy” A TALE AS NICE AS ITS PROTAGONIST

n May 26, South Omaha Stories had a successful showing at the Livestock Exchange Building.

This event is part of the Neighborhood Tapestries project for 2015, which takes place in the Great Plains Theatre Conference.

All four “Historias del Sur de Omaha” (Stories of South Omaha) where based on the life experiences of immigrants (three women and one man), and they were all coordinated by New York Director Josh Hecht and recreated by the pen of talented playwrights such as Scott Working who, thanks to the great directing of M. Michele Philips, presented several anecdotes that fascinated the audience. One of said stories was La Historia de Lucy (Lucy’s Story).

Originally from Campeche, Mexico, Lucero “Lucy” Aguilar arrived at the United States when she was almost five years old. This beautiful young woman, the youngest of five siblings (three men and two women), acknowledges: “Nowadays I only have some vague memories of my home country. I can remember a bit about my house, but that’s about it.”

Lucy, who is twenty years old, will in two years be the third person in her family to finish college. For now she remains busy with her management classes at the University of Nebraska in Omaha and on her work at the Heartland Workers Center (HWC): “I joined in the middle of May and I love what I do because I help to organize events for the community. Sergio Sosa (Executive Director for the organization) is a great man.

When you get a chance to talk to him, he always highlights your greatest skills. When you’re next to him, you feel that you can do anything!”

During this week, Lucy and her coworkers will be taking on a very interesting project: “We’ll be running a poll for the community. We’ll go to their homes to ask them about what they need, about what they’re missing, seeing what we can do to change their way of living to improve it.”

Making their lives better is what motivates Lucy every day: “Since November when I joined Young Nebraskans in Action (formerly Dreamers Coalition), I feel empowered, knowing I’m part of a youth movement that is trying to transform our community. We’re also working hard to change Nebraska to build a better future for young immigrants nationwide.”

And even though over the last few months she’s been talking with Senators and with members of Congress (as well as with current Governor Pete Rickets), she’s set on not pursuing a career in politics: “Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve seen myself as an entrepreneur, opening my own business and managing my own money. My dream is to own an organic juice shop in South Omaha. That’s why right now I’m working on building a good credit score and researching which banks can help me to make my investment.”

The tenacious activities plans to continue with the educational activities she set for herself last May thanks to her collaboration with the HWC: “Having a job like mine has opened my eyes, and being surrounded by so many people who have the same goals is wonderful! When I participated in the debates about all the bill proposals in the capital (Lincoln), I realized that, for example, many people were opposed to giving young people a driver’s license because they didn’t know all the facts.

Being able to explain to then how things really are was very valuable.”

Since her immigration status has now been legalized, this July Lucy, her mother and almost all of her siblings will visit her home country after not being able to go back over the last fifteen years: “It will be a surprise but I’m very afraid because I left when I was very young so no one will recognize me, and I don’t know how they’ll treat me. But I’m also very happy because I’ll get to see my dad again, who went back there a long time ago.”

The future entrepreneur is very thankful for the moment she’s living in: “If it weren’t for my mom (Josefina Carrizales), I wouldn’t be where I am right now. She studied in Mexico to become a nurse, but she hasn’t been able to work here as one, so she’s instead resorted to working at food packing. Nothing can stop her. She raised all of us and was my biggest inspiration.

The only time I’ve seen her desperate was when her mom was sick, and she had to go back to Mexico. I was very afraid that she wouldn’t come back, but she did, even though I don’t know how she did it. We’re now all residents, and that is my biggest blessing.”

IME GRANTS FROM THE MEXICAN CONSULATE IN OMAHA The Exterior Relationship Secretary, the Mexicans Aboard Institute, and the Mexican Consulate in Omaha announce a grant is available to organizations and adult education institutions to support students of Mexican origins, who would like to start, continue or finished their studies.

Educational sectors that can apply for the IME-Becas program are: Higher education, BS or Master degree – Academic institutions or organizations that offer scholarships or develop educational programs to expand the opportunities of higher education for Mexican population.

Adult Education – Community organizations that offer alphabetization programs, INEA basic education, GED/HiSET classes, computer classes and occupational training.

For more information go to the web page consulmex. sre.gob.mx/omaha GRADUATION AT THE PRISON Last week, seven inmates at the Nebraska State Penitentiary received high school diplomas in a graduation ceremony at the Lincoln prison. Five other inmates couldn’t attend because they’d either been released, were at another facility or were in solitary confinement for misbehavior.

The ceremony, the smallest in recent history at the State Penitentiary, is the pinnacle of success for inmates in state prison education programs.

After a decade of mostly stagnant growth in educational programs, the Legislature increased funding last year as part of a $5 million-a-year effort to improve the chances that inmates don’t return to a life of crime. One of the programs, from Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, is already providing community college courses and career counseling to nearly 300 inmates. Others are offering vocational training for jobs in home construction, warehouse work, food service and forklift operation.

GOVERNOR REQUESTS FEDERAL DISASTER DECLARATION Lt. Gov. Mike Foley, on behalf of Gov. Pete Ricketts, who is out of the country on a trade mission, submitted a formal request to the President for a major disaster declaration in the wake of severe storms across parts of Nebraska. Storm damage occurred from high winds, heavy rains, and tornadoes beginning on May 2.

According to the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the most severe impacts have been to roads and bridges, including 15 that were destroyed. The following counties have declared a state of emergency: Cass, Dundy, Gage, Jefferson, Lincoln, Lancaster, Morrill, Nuckolls, Otoe, Saline, Saunders, and Thayer.

The request also includes a hazard mitigation request for the entire state, and it will be reviewed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s regional office in Kansas City before being forwarded to the White House for a decision by President Barack Obama.

HOUSE OF LOOM HOSTS BENEFIT FOR FAMILY FACING DEPORTATION Fundraiser for Family’s Legal and Medical Expenses

The House of Loom will host a fundraiser on June 23rd for an El Salvadorian family facing potential deportation. The event will begin at 9:30 p.m. and feature cocktails, karaoke, and a silent auction of items including theater tickets, jewelry, and signed LPs donated by Omaha musician Conor Oberst. Proceeds will help pay the legal and medical bills of an Omaha-based El Salvadorian family, who wishes to remain anonymous. Four years ago, Marisol (name changed to protect identity) was taking care of her family in San Vicente, El Salvador when her husband had a kidney transplant and came to the US looking for a job to pay his medical bills. “Things went terribly wrong,” said Marisol. Her husband was hospitalized in the US due to complications from his transplant, and Marisol came to take care of him and find work. She soon sent for her four children, who she’d left with a family member in her gang-ridden hometown. Marisol worked with US authorities to provide documentation for her children, a process that left her with extensive legal expenses on top of her husband’s medical bills.

Soon after her family was reunited in Omaha, Marisol’s husband passed away and two of her children now face deportation processes. “I have two jobs and I work every day, sometimes from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. But it will all be worth it as long as I can have my children with me!” said Marisol. “We want to do things right. People don’t understand why we are here. Do they think that working in the field and earning $4 a day would have helped my husband who had to travel to the capital every two days for blood transfusions?” .
