Introducción a una agenda de políticas para el 114vo Congreso

lrededor de uno de cada diez adultos latinos en los EE.UU. (62%) hablan inglés o son bilingües, esto de acuerdo con un análisis de la Encuesta Nacional de Latinos 2013 del Pew Research Center. Los latinos en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica se separan en tres grupos en cuanto a su uso del idioma: 36% son bilingües, 25% utilizan principalmente el idioma inglés y 38% utilizan principalmente el idioma español.

Entre aquellos que hablan el idioma inglés, 59% son bilingües.

Mientras que vislumbramos las elecciones presidenciales del 2016, es importante considerar la influencia de los votantes latinos

sobre el panorama político de este país. En las elecciones presidenciales del 2012, los votantes en las minorías, las mujeres y otros cruciales grupos demográficos ayudaron a asegurar el camino hacia la victoria del Presidente Obama. El Presidente Obama recibió un 71% del voto latino en el 2012, mientras que el Gobernador Romney recibió el 27%.

Poco después el Comité Nacional Republicano (RNC) realizó una revisión a fondo de las elecciones del 2012 y presentó varias recomendaciones para hacer crecer la influencia del partido y lograr el éxito en las elecciones posteriores.

Al notar la influencia y el efecto de los latinos estadounidenses para la victoria de

Por ejemplo, el RNC identificó que una reforma migratoria integral era una prioridad para los latinos, misma que era consistente con las políticas económicas del partido para promover el crecimiento en empleos y las oportunidades para todos.

Argumentos como este, generaron algo de impulso al inicio del 113er Congreso para una agenda que se enfocara en una reforma migratoria integral, una reforma fiscal integral, así como finalizar una gubernatura de una crisis a otra. Sin embargo, surgieron tensiones al no lograr que el liderazgo de la

Cámara presentara una reforma migratoria para su discusión y la batalla continuó sobre la Ley de Cuidado de Salud Asequible, entre otras cosas. Por consecuencia, resurgió un estancamiento político.

Los votantes latinos llegaron a las elecciones de medio término en el 2014, sintiendo que sus representantes en el Congreso le habían fallado a la comunidad. Una encuesta en la víspera de la elección realizada por Latino Decisions encontró que, por todo el país, la mayoría de los votantes latinos creían que a ninguno de los partidos en verdad les importasen sus intereses.

Mientras que un número menor de latinos está registrado para votar - alrededor de 14 millones en el 2012 - el gran número de latinos no registrados nos hace apreciar el formidable potencial de esta población.

Además, un 93% de los niños latinos en este país son ciudadanos de los EE.UU., y serán quienes generen un crecimiento en el grupo de votantes latinos: alrededor de 900,000 latinos nacidos en los EE.UU., cumplirán los 18 años de edad durante la próxima década.

La población latina en crecimiento está cambiando el perfil político del país, en especial en los estados y distritos que antes eran étnica y racialmente homogéneos, y leales solamente a un partido político.

Un estudio reciente del Center for American Progress comenta sobre cómo los cambios demográficos en un Estado incrementan substancialmente la influencia del voto de la minoría, notando que el éxito en las elecciones del 2016, tanto para puestos en el Senado como para la Presidencia, probablemente dependerá del apoyo de los votantes en las minorías étnicas y raciales. La distribución geográfica de los latinos también está cambiando. Mientras que la mayoría permanece concentrada en California, Texas y Florida, los latinos se han convertido en una comunidad nacio-

nal. Por ejemplo, estados en el sureste del país, incluyendo Carolina del Sur, Kentucky, Arkansas y Mississippi han experimentado un crecimiento en la población latina de más del 110% durante la última década.

Aunque la mayoría de los latinos en este país son ciudadanos estadounidenses, una cantidad considerable nacieron en el extranjero y muchos hogares latinos cuentan con una mezcla de estados migratorios. En el 2012, el 64.3% de la población había nacido en el país, mientras que otro 11% había sido naturalizado. Para el 2014, 93% de los niños latinos eran ciudadanos estadounidenses. • La pobreza latina está disminuyendo pero permanece más alta que la de otros grupos étnicos y raciales. La tasa de pobreza latina disminuyó un poco del 26% al 24% entre 2012 y el 2013, mientras que la tasa de pobreza entre todos los estadounidenses permanece estable en alrededor del 15%. Aun considerando esta modesta mejora, casi uno de cada cuatro latinos vive todavía en la pobreza, aunque los latinos tienen la tasa más alta de participación laboral (66%) de todos los grupos étnicos o raciales.

• Los estudiantes latinos están asistiendo a la universidad en números record, pero todavía hay un rezago en cuanto a la obtención de un grado. El porcentaje de latinos de 18 a 24 años de edad registrados en programas universitarios incrementó en un 24% entre 1972 y 2012.

Sin embargo, los estudiantes latinos no se están graduando en los mismos números que sus pares étnicos y raciales. Poco más de la mitad (52%) de todos los estudiantes latinos completa grados de licenciatura dentro de un periodo de seis años, lo cual es menor a los porcentajes dentro del mismo periodo para los asiáticos/nativos de las islas del pacífico (70%) y de los caucásicos (63%).

• La Ley de Cuidado Asequible ha reducido el número de latinos sin un seguro médico, pero millones todavía no cuentan con un seguro, lo cual resulta en una disminución del 8% en la tasa general de quienes no cuentan con un seguro dentro de este grupo. Sin embargo, los latinos permanecen entre las poblaciones con más alto porcentaje de miembros que no cuentan con un seguro médico, siendo alrededor de un 25% del total de latinos quienes no cuentan con cobertura médica, en comparación con el promedio nacional del 10%. Veinte millones de latinos viven en Estados que no han expandido Medicaid para cubrir a más personas, con más de dos terceras partes (14 millones) viviendo en Texas y Florida.

Aunque no pueden negarse las mejoras en cuanto al estado de la comunidad, todavía persisten las antiguas desigualdades y afectan el bienestar general de los latinos. Dada la importancia de las contribuciones de los latinos a nuestra fuerza laboral y a la prosperidad de la nación, invertir en una agenda que promueva el ideal de un trato equitativo, tiene mucho sentido tanto política como económicamente.

PRIORIDADES EN POLÍTICAS

Durante los próximos dos años, los legisladores tendrán oportunidad de construir sobre los recientes logros socioeconómicos para ayudar a liderar a la nación hacia una mayor equidad. Para alcanzar dicha meta, los legisladores deben proteger los programas que ya han mejorado las vidas de millones, así como adoptar políticas que beneficiarán a más estadounidenses de manera justa. Deben trabajar juntos para examinar de manera completa y objetiva los retos socioeconómicos y la desigualdad resultante a la que se enfrenta la comunidad latina.

Solamente ellos pueden desarrollar una agenda política enfocada a tratar cuestiones críticas — incluyendo arreglar el obsoleto sistema de inmigración, promover la seguridad económica e invertir en la educación – y promover el ideal de un tratamiento equitativo y de una oportunidad de crecimiento.

Resolver estas y otras cuestiones de políticas públicas contempladas en esta agenda será fundamental no solamente para el bienestar de la comunidad latina, sino también para el futuro de nuestro país, ya que una comunidad latina más fuerte se traduce en un país más fuerte.

NCLR es optimista al pensar que mucho se puede lograr por los latinos en el 114vo Congreso, si es que los legisladores escogen hacerlo. Nosotros esperamos poder trabajar con los legisladores para invertir en el futuro de nuestro país al mejorar las oportunidades para los latinos.

lion in 2012—the large number of Latinos not yet registered highlights the formidable potential of this population’s influence.

Further, 93% of Hispanic children in this country are U.S. citizens and they will be a main driver of growth in the Hispanic electorate: roughly 900,000 U.S.-born Hispanics will turn 18 each year over the next decade.

The growing Latino population is changing the political profile of the country, particularly in states and districts that were once racially and ethnically homogenous and loyal to only one political party. A recent study by the Center for American Progress details how shifting state demographics substantially increase the influence of the minority vote, noting that success in the 2016 elections—both for the presidency and for Senate seats—will likely depend on support from racial and ethnic minority voters. For example, by 2016 voters of color will compose about 36% of all voters in Arizona, and Hispanics are projected to account for 23% of the total electorate in that state.

As in Arizona, Latino voters in Colorado, Nevada, the Southeast, the Midwest, and beyond will influence the outcome of elections.

Therefore, the success of political candidates across the nation will increasingly reflect their responsiveness to the concerns and priorities Hispanics in every community.

s we look toward the 2016 presidential election, it is important to consider the influence of the Latino electorate on the political landscape of this country. In the 2012 presidential election, minority voters, women, and other critical demographics helped secure President Obama’s path to victory. President Obama received 71% of Latino votes in 2012, while Governor Romney received just 27%.

Shortly after, the Republican National Committee (RNC) undertook a comprehensive review of the 2012 election and made several recommendations for growing the party’s influence and achieving success in subsequent elections.

Noting the influence and effect of Hispanic Americans on Obama’s victory, the report recommended embracing an agenda that focuses on topics of importance to Latinos. For example, the RNC identified comprehensive immigration reform as a Latino priority that was consistent with the party’s economic policies of promoting job growth and opportunity for all.

Arguments like this created momentum at the start of the 113th Congress toward an agenda that would focus on comprehensive immigration reform, comprehensive tax reform, and an end to governing from one crisis to the next. However, tensions rose as the leadership of the House of Representatives failed to bring immigration reform to the floor and battles continued over the Affordable Care Act, among other things; consequently, political gridlock resurfaced.

Latino voters entered the 2014 midterm elections with a sense that their representatives in Congress had failed their community. An election eve poll by Latino Decisions found that, across the country, the majority of Latino voters did not believe that either party truly cared about their interests.

Elected officials face a critical choice about how to engage and appeal to Latino voters. Unless candidates speak to Latino priorities, their path to victory will be narrow. In 2014, there were over 25 million eligible Hispanic voters, representing 11% of all eligible voters. While a smaller number of Latinos are registered to vote—about 14 mil-

In 2013, the U.S. Latino population reached 54 million, accounting for about 17% of the U.S. population. Rapid growth is projected to continue, with Latinos reaching nearly 130 million individuals, or about 31% of the total population, by 2060. The geographic distribution of Hispanics is also changing. While the majority remains concentrated in California, Texas, and Florida, Latinos have become a national community. For example, states in the American Southeast, including South Carolina, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Mississippi, have experienced Latino population growth of more than 110% over the last decade.

While the majority of Latinos in this country are U.S. citizens, a substantial number are foreign born, and many Hispanic households consist of individuals with a mix of immigration statuses. In 2012, 64.3% of the population was native-born and another 11% had been naturalized.12 In 2014, 93% of Latino children were U.S. citizens. The proportional difference between citizen adults and citizen children affirms the existence of mixed-status households.

The intersection of immigration status and other policy areas affects millions of Latino families across the country. Tasks such as tax preparation or enrolling in health insurance become complex legal questions that many fear could threaten their families with separation. For immigrant and citizen family members alike, English language proficiency also remains a challenge for accessing services, advancing in the workplace, and fully participating in civic life.

The hard work of Latinos has resulted in gains in many areas, but overall this progress is muted as they continue to lag behind other Americans.

• Latino poverty is decreasing but remains higher than that of other racial and ethnic groups. The Latino poverty rate decreased slightly, from about 26% to 24% between 2012 and 2013, while the poverty rate among all Americans remained steady at about 15%. Despite this modest improvement, nearly one in four Latinos still lives in poverty, even though Latinos have the highest labor force participation rate (66%) of any racial or ethnic group.

• Hispanic students are attending college in record numbers, but degree completion lags. The share of Hispanic 18- to 24-year-olds enrolled in college programs increased by 24% between 1972 and 2012. However, Latino students are not graduating at the same rates as their racial and ethnic peers. Slightly more than half (52%) of all Latino students complete bachelor’s degrees within six years, which is less than the completion rates in the same time period for Asians/Pacific Islanders (70%) and Whites (63%).

• The Affordable Care Act has reduced the number of uninsured Latinos, but millions remain uninsured. Since 2013, about 2.6 million Latinos gained

health insurance, resulting in an 8% drop in the overall uninsurance rate among this group. However, Latinos remain the most uninsured population in the United States, with about 25% of all Latinos lacking health coverage, compared to the national average of 10%. Twenty million Latinos live in states that have not expanded Medicaid to cover more individuals, with more than two-thirds (14 million) living in Texas and Florida.

While improvements in the state of the Latino community are undeniable, long-standing inequities persist and affect the overall wellbeing of Latinos. Given the significance of Latino contributions to our workforce and national prosperity, investing in an agenda that promotes the ideal of equitable treatment makes sound political and economic sense.

POLICY PRIORITIES Over the next two years, policymakers have an opportunity to build on recent socioeconomic gains to help lead the nation toward greater equity. To reach this end, policymakers must protect programs that have already improved the lives of millions and embrace policies that will benefit more Americans evenly. They must also work together to thoroughly and objectively examine the socioeconomic challenges and resulting disparities faced by the Hispanic community. Only then can they develop a targeted policy agenda that addresses critical issues— including fixing the outdated immigration system, promoting economic security, and investing in education—and promotes the ideal of equitable treatment and growing opportunity.

Solving these and other public policy issues highlighted in this agenda are critical not only to the well-being of the Latino community but also to the future of our country, because a stronger Latino community means a stronger America. NCLR is optimistic that much can be accomplished on behalf of Latinos in the 114th Congress, should lawmakers choose to do so. We look forward to working with policymakers to invest in the future of our country by improving opportunities for Latinos.

NEBRASKA LATINO AMERICAN COMMISSION DEYANIRA SALGADO APPOINTED AS GOVERNOR’S REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE NEBRASKA LATINO AMERICAN COMMISSION Deyanira Salgado of Lincoln has been appointed by Governor Pete Ricketts to serve as the Governor’s Representative on the Latino American Commission’s Board of Commissioners.

Salgado will fill in the vacancy left in March by Jose Santos who served as the Governor’s Representative for many years. She was working at the Department of Labor (DOL) in the Unemployment Insurance sector when she was promoted to the Labor Law sector on April 6, 2015.

Her duties include investigations that may consist of payroll audits and on-site inspections. She will also interview meatpackers, businesses and construction sites to ensure they are in compliance with the Non-English Speaking Employees Law, the Wages and the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Nebraska Wage Payment and Collection Act, the Contractor Registration Act and the Employee Classification Act. “As a bilingual Labor Law Investigator and Meatpacker Bill of Rights Coordinator I will be working closely with the Spanish speaking population regarding wage/employment issues, document inspections, and may have to meet with workers, company officials and coordinate with federal agencies,” said Salgado. “My goal is to improve the working conditions and create awareness for workers that don’t know their rights by creating a meaningful relationship with employers in order to improve working conditions. I will be conducting business visits and maneuver around meat packing plants, active construction sites and other business locations.”

Born in Los Angeles, Calif., Salgado is a first generation Mexican-American and the eldest of three children. She and her family moved to Grand Island, Neb., to join extended family when she was 14-years-old.

She graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 2009 and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in the fall.

In addition to work and volunteering through the sorority, Salgado also worked at the Community Learning Center at North Star High School in Lincoln helping students with their homework and encouraging them to pursue a higher education. She also served as a mentor at Grand Island Senior High School and provided college preparatory aid for students.

She graduated from UNL in December 2013 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a minor in Spanish. She was hired by the DOL on July 15, 2014 and has remained there since.

Salgado views her new role as the Governor’s Representative as a way to continue helping others just as she has been doing for years, only on a different scale: “As a first generation Mexican-American citizen I feel it is my duty to represent my Latino Community and use my voice to speak on behalf of those that don’t know their rights. Our Latino community is made from resilient countries fighting for the same American dream. If I can be a resource to help them get there, I will be.”

Las oportunidades siempre hay que tomarlas. No importa si aparecen en tu camino sin pensarlo, o si finalmente las consigues después de haber trabajo mucho buscándolas”, dijo el Director de Omaha Noticias, Sergio Dévora Nájera.

Después de buscar el origen de la palabra glamour y conocer que sus raíces van desde la definición que la relaciona con una especie de “hechizo mágico”, hasta su conexión con la palabra grammar (en inglés), definitivamente me quedo con lo que dice el Diccionario de la Real Academia Española, donde el término está innegablemente relacionado con un “encanto sensual que fascina”, ligándose con “la belleza que es sofisticada y elegante a la vez”.

Mi interés por encontrar dicha definición surgió luego de conocer el destacado trabajo de dos jóvenes mexicanos, Brayan Aguirre (Chihuahua) y Luis Hernández (Guanajuato), responsables del arreglo de las modelos de portadas e interiores de Quinceañera Magazine Nebraska y de los maniquíes de pasarela de Quinceañera Expo en Omaha.

Desde hace más de tres años y gracias a que una amiga en común los presentó conociendo sus similitudes, en cuanto a gustos personales y visión creativa se re-

fiere, los diseñadores de imagen Hernández y Aguirre unieron su talento para establecer LB Styling, en la vecina ciudad de Kansas City, Missouri.

La mancuerna artística no podría haber resultado mejor ya que Aguirre es un apasionado de todo lo que tenga que ver con la cultura de la belleza, atrevido por naturaleza y quien no tiene “temor a experimentar con nada”, mientras que Hernández, de personalidad un poco más introspectiva, gusta de “combinar lo orgánico, lo natural” con el buen gusto.

Para ambos, lo principal es que sus clientes (en su mayoría mujeres), derrochen ése glamour del que hablamos al principio, a través de sus peinados, tintes, cortes de cabello y maquillaje, es decir, en todos los aspectos de su arreglo personal.

Aguirre se preparó profesionalmente en dos importantes escuelas para estilistas en su país, y adquirió experiencia trabajando en la Ciudad de México, “en un salón de belleza propiedad de la señora Flor Silvestre” (esposa del fallecido actor e intérprete Antonio Aguilar y madre del cantautor Pepe Aguilar). “Vivir ahí me encantó y supe que esto era lo que quería hacer por siempre, ¡porque aunque no me pagaran, yo estaría feliz todo el tiempo!”.

inclinaciones hacia el diseño, la belleza y la moda, por lo que comenzó abriéndose paso como estilista independiente de guardarropa. “Pero ahora en LB no podría tener a un mejor tutor que a Brayan, quien me ha enseñado todo lo que respecta al cuidado del cabello”.

Trabajando arduamente a veces hasta más de 12 horas al día, atendiendo sus citas, o bien de 6 a 8 horas en una sesión fotográfica, Hernández y Aguirre se acoplan a los escenarios y han sabido interpretar muy bien las necesidades de sus clientes, lo que los ha llevado a productivas colaboraciones con diferentes fotógrafos como Bernardo Montoya y Erick Gutiérrez de Elite Studio Photography.

Particularmente comprobé que a pesar de encontrarse bajo la presión del tiempo preparando la imagen visual del show (desvelados y tras manejar más de dos horas para llegar puntuales a sus compromisos en esta ciudad), los artistas hispanos siempre derrochan armonía, lo que hace que uno se sienta confiada y feliz al ponerse en sus manos.

“Creo que todo se debe a que nos compaginamos muy bien y sabemos complementar las ideas que tenemos para el arreglo de las participantes”, expresó Hernández.

“Nosotros nos entendemos tan bien - agregó Aguirre- que en una hora podemos dejar a una chica lista con un maquillaje impecable y un peinado que le va a durar más de 8 horas”.

Quizás por ello es que su principal enfoque es “la mujer trabajadora”, tal como lo explicó Hernández: “Existe un mercado impresionante de mujeres que salen a trabajar en diferentes empleos y que se preocupan por lucir bien y son ellas las que nos recomiendan entre sus compañeras. Aquí en Estados Unidos tenemos una gran oportunidad porque vemos una mezcla de culturas impresionante, así que tenemos clientas rusas, españolas, colombianas, asiáticas, brasileñas, puertorriqueñas y más”.

“Aprendemos de cada una de ellas y cuando nos dan un abrazo, porque se sienten felices y satisfechas, nos hacen el día. Por eso siempre las invitamos a relajarse, a disfrutar el momento en el que las estamos arreglando porque se lo merecen. Y que una vez que salgan a la calle, no tengan miedo de sacar su verdadera personalidad y ser ellas mismas, libres”, enfatizó Aguirre.

A propósito de personalidades, Hernández y Aguirre, orgullosos de sus raíces mexicanas e inspirados en la fuerte presencia de Frida Kahlo, también decidieron incursionar en la creación de piezas de joyería y accesorios bajo la marca LB Glam.

Teniendo como musa a la bella y camaleónica modelo Diana Kassandra (hermana de Hernández), han presentado exitosamente sus creaciones en la Latino Fashion Week de Chicago y el 2014 su colección inspirada en la figura de Venus, tuvo una gran aceptación en la Kansas City Fashion Week donde materiales como el oro y los cristales, brillaron esplendorosamente en el desfile de Union Station.

Por ello, si un estilo marca el sello de LB Styling, definitivamente es “¡glamoroso! porque conlleva todo lo que significa verte bien por afuera y sentirte bien por adentro”, concluyó Aguirre.

ORGANIZACIONES Y OFICIALES RECONOCEN EL LOGRO DE LA LEY LB623 El Centro Laboral, también conocido como The Heartland Workers Center (HWC), está orgulloso de que la propuesta de ley LB623 haya pasado finalmente, y aplaudió a los 34 senadores estatales quienes votaron a favor de anular el veto del actual gobernador de Nebraska, Pete Rickets.

El Consulado de México en Omaha reconoció la decisión de la legislatura de Nebraska al aprobar y convertir en ley estatal la LB623, y aplaudió a todas las instancias involucradas que apoyaron a los jóvenes de DACA para que se les permita contribuir a la prosperidad del estado de Nebraska.

Esta nueva ley permite que los beneficiarios de la Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) puedan obtener inmediatamente licencias de manejo o identificaciones del estado de Nebraska.

Nebraska era el único estado de la unión que negaba el acceso a licencias de manejo a los jóvenes beneficiarios de DACA. Esta ley sobrepasa la decisión ejecutiva del ex gobernador Dave Heineman, realizada en agosto 2012, de negar licencias de manejo e identificaciones estatales a los jóvenes de DACA, así como el veto a esta ley realizada por el actual gobernador Pete Rickets.

After searching for the origin of the word glamor and learning that it is somehow related to some type of “magic spell,” as well as being connected to the world grammar, I believe I’ll stick with the definition that states the term is related to “a sensual charm that fascinates,” while also being linked to “beauty that is sophisticated and elegant at the same time.”

My drive for learning more about this word started after getting to know the outstanding work of Brayan Aguirre (Chihuahua) and Luis Hernandez, two outstanding Mexican Latinos responsible for the look of the models that participate in Quinceañera Magazine Nebraska, as well as of the runway mannequins of the Quinceañera Expo in Omaha.

For more than three years now, and thanks to a mutual friend who introduced them after realizing how they both had a similar artistic vision and taste, image consultants Hernandez and Aguirre joined forces to establish LB Styling in Kansas City, Missouri.The artistic pairing couldn’t have been better because Aguirre is bold by nature and very passionate about anything that has to do with the culture of beauty, “never afraid to experiment.” Hernandez, on the other hand, is a bit more introspective and favors “combining organic and natural items” with good taste. For both of them, what matters the most is that her clients (most of which are women) ooze glamour with their hairdos, hair color, haircuts, and makeup, with everything that is part of their look.

Aguirre studied at two prestigious styling schools in his native country, and he gained a lot of experience by working at Mexico City “in a beauty parlor owned by Flor Silvestre” (wife of late actor/singer/songwriter Antonio Aguilar, and mother of Pepe Aguilar): “I loved living there and it helped me see that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I’d happily do this even if I didn’t get paid for it.”

Ever since he was little, Hernandez realized he wanted to work in design, beauty and fashion, which is why he started to make his mark as an independent wardrobe stylist: “But now at LB, I couldn’t ask for a better mentor than Brayan who has taught me everything there is to know about hair care.”

Having to work up to 12 hours a day when taking care of appointments, or by being at a photo shoot for 6 to 8 hours, Hernandez and Aguirre can take on any challenge, and

they’ve always been able to interpret a client’s needs. This has allowed them to collaborate with several great photographers such as Bernardo Montoya ans Erick Gutierrez of Elite Studio Photography.

I was able to see how, despite being under a lot of stress while they prepared the visual design of the show (even while not getting much sleep and after having to drive for a couple of hours to get to their appointments in the city on time), both Latino artists always ooze harmony, which makes you trust them as you happily let them do their thing.

“I believe it’s all because we really get along well, and we know how to finish each other’s ideas when taking care of all contestants,” said Hernandez.

“We get along so well,” added Aguirre, “that in a single hour we can apply flawless makeup on a girl and give her a hairdo that will last for over eight hours.”

This is probably why their main focus is on “the working woman” as explained by Hernandez: “there is an amazing market for women who go out to work at a wide range of jobs and who worry about looking good, and they are the ones who recommend us to their coworkers. Here in the United States we have a great opportunity due to the amazing mix of cultures, which is why we have clients of Russian, Spanish, Colombian, Brazilian, Puerto Rican and Asian heritage, to name a few.”

“We learn from every one of them, and it just makes our day when they hug us because they´re very happy and satisfied with our work. This is why we always invite them to relax for a bit, to enjoy the moment while we do our thing because they deserve it. This way once they’re out walking on the street, they won’t be afraid to show the world their real self,” emphasized Aguirre.

On top of all that, Hernandez and Aguirre, proud of their Mexican heritage and taking heavy inspiration from Frida Kahla, have decided to also work on creating jewelry and accessories under the LB Glam brand.

With a beautiful and chameleon-like muse by their side in Diana Kassandra (Hernandez’s sister), they have successfully presented their collections at the Latino Fashion Week de Chicago, and in 2014 their collection inspired by Venus had a great showing at the Kansas City Fashion Week where items in gold and crystals shined during the runway show at Union Station.

“Because of all this, if there is one word that can definite LB Styling, it would be ‘glamorous!,’ because it conveys what it means to look good on the outside and feel good on the inside,” concluded Aguirre.

briefs POSITIVE PARENTING CLASSES Parenting classes are for parents with children birth to 12 who want be a successful parent!

The 12-week program for parenting classes includes: understanding child’s stages and needs, fair expectations for children, effective discipline, family roles, and cooperation and independence.

Content for the classes comes from evidencedbased programs from Nurturing Parenting, which specializes in family development resources, and publishes nurturing parent programs. Our English language parenting classes meet once a week during the year for 12 weeks. Families may join at any time and leave when they have finished 12 classes. Free childcare is provided during classes.

Our Spanish and Karen/Burmese parenting classes meet once a week, in the spring and fall for 12 weeks. Free childcare is provided during classes.

The total fee of $25 can be paid in small payments. Limited rides to class are available.

ORGANIZATIONS AND OFFICIALS ARE PLEASE THAT LB623 BECAME LAW The Heartland Workers Center (HWC) is overjoyed that LB623 has finally passed and applauded the 34 State Senators who supported overriding the governor’s veto.

The Consulate of Mexico in Omaha recognizes the decision of the Nebraska Legislature to enact LB623 as state law. The Consulate welcomes the effort and hard work of all involved parties to allow DACA youth to continue contributing to the prosperity of Nebraska.

This new law allows recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) to obtain drivers’ licenses in Nebraska immediately.

Nebraska was the only State that denied access to driver’s license for immigrant youth granted DACA. This law overrides former Governor Dave Heineman’s executive decision from August 2012 to deny DACA recipients the ability to obtain drivers’ licenses or states IDs, as well as Governor Pete Ricketts’ decision to veto the bill.
