Home Maintenance t’s hard to believe it’s already August and the beautiful Nova IScotia summer is well underway. We hate to even mention it, but fall is coming. Back to school is already on our minds and the nights are getting a little bit cooler. Fall is the perfect time to finish your maintenance from summer and prepare your home for winter. Here are some tips for the upcoming season:

1. Assess the exterior of your home and make any necessary repairs. Is your paint peeling or are you missing some siding? Take this time to make sure that your home is properly protected against the elements before winter comes. 2. Properly store your outdoor appliances and furniture. When

the time comes to put away your lawn mowers and patio furniture, be sure to clean it before storing. It can prolong the life of your furniture and prevent rust, and ensuring it’s properly stored keeps it out of the harsh winter elements and ready for the summers ahead!

3. Clean the gutters! This is a task for late fall. When the leaves

have fallen, it’s important to make sure they are removed from the gutters of your home and that any debris is washed away so that they do not clog and cause damage to your home.

4. Make sure your heating units are ready for winter. Fall is a great time to make sure your heating is working to its full capacity. Make sure to call in a licensed contractor to inspect the furnace or fireplace and make sure everything is ready for when the temperatures drop.

5. Winterize your air conditioner. Not yet, we know! But when fall is in the air, it’s time to think about putting away your AC units and ensuring they are stored properly so they will function just as well next summer.

Pool Safety Summer is finally here in Nova Scotia! Maybe you’re thinking of adding a swimming pool to your property to enjoy the summer sun. There are so many options for backyard pools these days - inground, above ground, even inflatable. And then there’s the question of chlorinated or salt water. But after all of this is settled and you’ve decided on what kind of swimming pool best suits your property, there’s one important step you need to take for safety - and because it’s the law. You need to consult your municipal by-laws for guidelines on pool placement, variance and prevention of unauthorized access.

There are laws in Nova Scotia that address pool safety, particularly pool enclosures to help ensure that your pool is safely off-limits when there’s no one around. You should always check with your municipality before you install or alter a private residential swimming pool because the by-laws vary across Nova Scotia. However, they’re all aimed at making sure your pool is safely closed off to those with unauthorized access.

It can be overwhelming to try and figure out how to ensure your new pool is properly enclosed but also functional and enjoyable. The municipal by-laws are a great place to look for these guidelines and can help guide you in your fencing, gates and decking decisions surrounding your pool.

home, a deck gives you plenty of extra living space. Nothing is better than stepping outside onto a beautiful deck to enjoy a good meal, relax or entertain friends and family. But your deck needs regular maintenance to keep it safe and looking beautiful. Is your decking looking a little worse for wear? The Nova Scotia winters can certainly take their toll on our decks and patios. Giving your deck a makeover is not hard though, and can be a weekend DIY project.

First you need to check the deck thoroughly to make sure it is structurally sound. Check structural beams and joists for rot or decay and replace anything that may compromise the structural integrity of your deck. You may want to call in the professionals for this job as it requires some expertise to make sure the structure is repaired properly. Remember, your family and loved ones will be enjoying your deck as well, so you’ll want to keep them safe.

Once your deck is structurally sound, there are a few things you can do to make it look fresh and new. Refinishing it can go a long way, but there are a few things that you need to do before you get out the paint brush. It’s best to apply a deck cleaner, or even a stain stripper to your deck to remove old paint or stainer. Then, pressure wash it away and leave the deck to dry!

Next, you’ll need to fix any protruding nails or broken boards. If any nails are sticking up or protruding, you can simply hammer them down again. If there are cracked or broken boards, simply cut a new board to match and replace it. A loose railing can be very dangerous, so if it’s wobbly, be sure to drill new holes and refasten it to your deck.
