The average cost to repair damage from burst pipes is in the thousands. Preparing ahead of time to avoid these catastrophes can save you money and save you from added stress during the holidays. Be proactive and have a plumber come check out your pipes and plumbing before the weather regularly drops below freezing. Additionally, the following tips can also help homeowners looking to be proactive about pipe damage:

INSULATE THE PIPES. There are many products on the market to add insulation to your pipes, and many others a plumber can install for you. Heat tape, pipe sleeves, and heat cable are easy, low-cost options that will add an extra level of protection when temperatures are low.

A plumber will be able to recommend areas in your home that need added insulation, but you might need to hire another contractor to install the insulation. Areas such as attics, basements and crawl spaces can develop leaks and cracks over time. Insulating these areas will maintain warmer temperatures. Don’t forget to check around the foundation of the home as well –cracks can let cold air in, which will negatively affect the pipes under your house.

Winter is tough enough on your wallet as is. Between gifts for the holidays, travel and heating costs, this time of year can hit your bank account hard. If you add in pipe damage or other plumbing issues brought on by the

Nova Scotia’s voice of real estate celebrates 25 years

The Nova Scotia Association of REALTORS® (NSAR) has made remarkable progress over the past 25 years, becoming a leading force in Nova Scotia's real estate industry. NSAR has adopted the role of being one voice for the industry in Nova Scotia and is dedicated to supporting its members through education, training, advocacy, and administration of the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in the province. On April 14, 2000, Cape Breton, Halifax-Dartmouth, Highland, Northern, and South Shore Boards merged with the Nova Scotia Real Estate Association (NSREA) to become the Nova Scotia Association of REALTORS®. The remaining two boards joined the association later.

Reflecting on NSAR's evolution, Mary MacDonald, NSAR's first president, found that since her Presidency, "technology has been one of the biggest changes to occur, from having to hire persons to take photos of the properties to now being able to do them ourselves and using equipment such as drones.”

Looking ahead, Andrew Gilroy, NSAR’s current president, shared that his time as president has been shaped by meaningful engagement with members. "Throughout my time of being president over the last year, I have had the chance to engage with members from all the regions and have had a chance to connect with them one on one,” says Gilroy.

As we have progressed through the years, NSAR has gained over 2,100 members who subscribe to a high standard of service and a strict code of ethics and will continue to uphold this standard.

The Association, through an agreement with the Nova Scotia Real Estate Commission, provides all real estate licensing courses in the province.
