5 Steps For Moving Into A New Home It seems like we never know how much stuff we actually own until it comes time to box it all up and move to a new home. Moving is often an exciting time, but it always seems to end up being chaotic as well. We get it - there’s so much to be done and so much to pack away. Here are some helpful tips so the move will be less stressful and more organized: 1) Get prepared and organized Chances are you’ve got at least a month from the time you buy your new home to when you move. Use this time to get organized. Pack and disassemble anything that won’t be used leading up to the movie. Pack your off-season clothing up - you won’t need it for a few months. Make sure you hire your movers (or schedule your friends) well in advance and keep them informed about the kinds of items they will be moving (i.e. oversized boxes, pianos, works of art, or appliances). Are you moving out of or into a condo? Make sure you reserve the service elevator for moving day well in advance and inquire about their moving policies. Many condo buildings require a damage deposit and only give you a certain window of time to move in or out. Do you have pets or small kids? Arrange for a babysitter for moving day to make it easier on them. 2) Be green - Moving can create a lot of waste. But, it is possible to reduce the amount of items that end up in a landfill. Many moving companies now have reusable bins you can use to pack

your belongings in instead of cardboard boxes! You can also make use of plastic bins you already own. Use old linens and newspapers to wrap delicate items and be sure to fill your bins and boxes when packing up the contents of your home. Filling up the luggage you already own is also a great way to transport your wardrobe. Have you discovered you own way too much and want to get rid of some stuff? Don’t throw it out! Have a yard sale or consider donating it to a local charity. If you’re moving a long distance, you most likely will not be able to transport the contents of your freezer, cleaning products or your propane tank. Avoid using garbage bags to pack your belongings in, in case a friend or family member mistakes your valuables for trash. It’s also a good idea to keep the contents of your safe and your jewelry nearby so it doesn’t get lost amongst all of your stuff. Keep it altogether in one box and try to transport it with you if you are able to. If you’re moving computers, it’s a great time to back them up before unplugging them. Bundles of important documents should be safeguarded, and even digitized before moving to avoid any losses if things get misplaced during the move. Packing an overnight back with toiletries, pyjamas and a change of clothes will also make the first night in your new home a lot easier! Installing a new entry door is a great way to improve the curb appeal of your home and create a warm, welcoming first impression for visitors. And while entry doors should certainly be attractive and architecturally interesting, they must also be resilient, weathertight and able to withstand exposure to the elements all year round. If you’re interested in replacing your entryway door, you’ll first have to decide which type of door to purchase. Entry doors are readily available at home improvement centers in three different types: wood, steel and fiberglass. All three types come in a wide range of sizes,styles and prices, so you won’t have any problem finding a door to fit into your budget and existing doorway. The more difficult decision is choosing which door type best suits your home, personal taste and lifestyle. To make that decision a bit easier, below you’ll find detailed descriptions of each door type, including benefits, drawbacks and important features to consider.

Plus, they can be painted, stained or finished with a clear topcoat. However, wood requires a certain amount of maintenance to keep a fresh, like-new appearance. When exposed to the elements, wood can swell, shrink, crack and warp. Paint and clear topcoats will eventually blister and peel. That’s why wood doors are best suited for recessed doorway openings, where the door is protected from the weather by a large overhang or deep alcove. If you’re planning on painting your new wood door, order it with a factory-primed finish. That’ll save you the time and trouble of priming the door before painting. Also, it’s very important that you paint the entire door: top and bottom ends, left and right edges, and front and back surfaces. That’s the very best way to seal out moisture and deter warping. STEEL DOORS This steel entry door has a decorative glass panel and is available prefinished in six paint colors.
WOOD DOORS The natural beauty and warmth of wood is captured in this prefinished mahogany door.
Wood doors are commonly available in a variety softwood and hardwood species, including fir, pine, hemlock, mahogany, oak, cherry and walnut. Most wood doors feature frame-andpanel construction, and can be ordered with or without “lites,” or windows. Solid wood doors are constructed entirely out of solid pieces of wood. Veneered doors have a sol-id wood frame that’s covered with a wood veneer. Solid wood doors are often heavier and more
Steel doors are popular with homebuilders and homeowners alike, and it’s easy to see why: They are extremely strong and secure. They’re durable and weather-tight, especially when fitted with magnetic weather stripping. Generally speaking, steel doors are also the most affordable type of entry door. Steel doors come primed ready for paint, but many home improvement centers now offer prefinished steel doors in a wide choice of factory-applied paint colors. And while most steel doors have a smooth surface, some models feature an embossed woodgrain finish. The two main drawbacks to steel are that it dents and rusts. You can fill dents with autobody putty, but rust must be completely removed to prevent the corrosion from spreading. Scrape or sand away all the rust to expose bare steel. Then, apply a primer coat followed by two coats of paint.
FIBERGLASS-COMPOSITE DOORS Don’t be fooled by its rich cherry wood finish. This resilient door is made of fiberglass.
There’s no such thing as a maintenancefree door, but a fiberglass door comes pretty darn close. Fiberglass is extremely tough and resilient, and particularly well suited for harsh, humid climates. It’s also highly resistant to warping, splitting and cracking. Fiberglass doors won’t dent or rot. Most fiberglass doors have a realistic wood grain texture that can be stained to resemble a wooden door. In fact, if you like the rich look of a solid mahogany door but not the price tag, buy a fiber-glass door and apply a mahogany stain. If you’d rather paint your entry door, that’s fine, too: fiber-glass accepts paint beautifully. The main drawback to fiberglass doors is that they’re relatively expensive. Only highend solid-hardwood doors cost more. DOOR-BUYING TIP: SIZING MATTERS It’s easy to make mistakes when ordering new doors because of the somewhat confusing way that manufacturers specify door sizes. For example, a 36-inch door is sold as a 3-0 unit (pronounced three-oh), meaning that it’s 3 feet, 0 in. wide. A 2-8 door isn’t 28 in. wide; it’s 32 in. wide. If you’re not paying close attention, it’s easy to order a 3-0 door for a 30-inch-wide opening, and then discover that the door is six inches too wide. Avoid these costly, time-consuming mistakes by double-checking the dimensions before ordering the door. When shopping for entry doors, keep in mind that price is a good indicator of quality A high-quality door will cost more, but it’ll last longer, perform better and be much more energy efficient. No matter which door you choose, make sure it suits your home’s climate. It’s also important to practice regular maintenance in order to keep your new door looking its best. The Psychology Behind Paint Colors You look around your home and decide you need a refreshing change. Painting any room in the home is a sure fire way to make it feel new and clean! Before you run to the hardware store and grab the first color that tickles your fancy, put some thought into the color - and some emotion, too. As a matter of fact, proponents of what is referred to as “color psychology” believe that the color of a room in the home is more than just a way to tie in the throw pillows. It’s a matter of emotional well-being. So what’s the right hue for you? CONSIDER THE ROOM’S PURPOSE The intended function of a room is a heavy deciding factor on which colors to use. Ask yourself, “What mood do we want this color to set?” Rooms such as an industrious kitchen, well-treaded dining room, or a bustling living room could go in a direction of colors that are thought to draw out conversation, appetites, and energy. According to WebMD.com, the color red seems to stimulate appetite and may be a good choice for a dining room or kitchen, as is yellow. Also, earth tones such as brown or tan stimulate social gatherings because they are warm and inviting, and a great choice for a living room. Then there’s the flip side of stimulation – relaxation. For a bedroom, stick with cool tones like blues, greens, and lavenders. These are thought to reduce stress and promote sleep. Red on the wall of a child’s room could go as far as to lead to restless sleep, so sacrifice the childhood character decor in favor of a cooler hue.

We see several different types of lighting in a house, ranging from fluorescent, incandescent, and halogen bulbs, to natural sunlight. Depending on the color that the light emits, the paint will either absorb or reflect the light in different ways, thus varying the paint’s shade to the human eye. A color can vary greatly in appearance in two different rooms that receive two different types of light. For this reason, it is suggested to observe the sun’s pattern and take notes before making a decision. For example, if the sunlight flows from the north, this will be a cooler tone of natural light in a room. On the other hand, if the sunlight flows into a room from the west, you could end up with an overwhelming warm tone if you’ve painted your wall red or orange. PERSONAL STYLE MATTERS If color psychology isn’t your cup of tea, then stick with what’s pleasing to your eye. Take your current decor into consideration. Try to pick a color that pulls out favorite designs in your rugs or wall decor. If you grew up with fond memories in a home with specific colors, then stick with those same colors in your home. Your experience with a color can also have an effect on your mood, so do what pleases your paint palette.
