Whether you're selling your house or have just purchased a new home, paving your driveway is one of the easiest ways to add curb appeal to your property! The choice between asphalt or concrete can be difficult. Here are some optionss to consider when making your decision: Appearance This is a personal preference. One paved surface may fit in better with the aesthetic of your property than the other. Asphalt is a darker surface and often disguises stains and spills. Concrete is a lighter surface, and is available in more customizable stains, patterns and textures.
Maintenance The amount of maintenance you are willing to put into your driveway can help you make your decision. Asphalt needs re-sealing every few years, whereas concrete does not require sealing as often, although occasional resealing is recommended for optimal longevity. However, it is harder to conceal repairs on concrete driveways than asphalt driveways, where the cracks can be filled and made to blend in.
Cost The size of your driveway may actually be a determining factor when deciding between asphalt or concrete. Concrete is more expensive than asphalt to install. However, concrete driveways have a longer expected lifespan.
Suitability Asphalt is the most common type of driveway paving surface in Nova Scotia. However, our very cold winters and our very hot summers make for an interesting conundrum when choosing a pavement surface. Concrete has the potential to crack in extreme cold, whereas asphalt has the tendency to soften in extreme heat. With both materials, it is important to make sure the appropraite gravel is used in the base to prevent any longevity issues. This can also help to minimize any temperature issues that your driveway may be susceptible to.
These are just a few factors to keep in mind when considering paving your driveway. Both asphalt and concrete are excellent options for paving in Nova Scotia. Ultimately, your decision may be determined by appearance and maintenance. Although the upfront costs may vary, the overall cost of maintenance and their longevity may render them equals in cost.

C lean o ut the gutters. This chore should be tackled after the leaves have fallen so that there will be less debris in your gutters over the winter, which will reduce the risk of ice dams.
Put away the patio furniture. To prolong the life of your your patio furniture and to keep it looking its best, we recommend storing your furniture away for the winter. Clean it off and store it away until next summer so the the cold weather and ice won't cause it to oxidize. C lean and sto re lawnmo wers and other equipment that you use throughout the summer to keep your lawn and gardens looking their best.
C heck yo ur w indo ws and do o rs fo r drafts. Re-caulking around them can eliminate drafts and make sure the heat doesn't escape.
Pro tect your garden. After your shrubbery and other delicate plants have lost their leaves, cover them up for the winter using burlap to protect them against the long, harsh winter. Your garden will thank you in the spring!
