A kitchen renovation is one of the most obvious ways to change the look of your home’s interior. It can modernize your home and add value. When contemplating a kitchen renovation many homeowners debate between refacing kitchen cabinetry or replacing it entirely. The most popular, and populous, destination is the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). With a population of roughly 400,000 it is the largest municipality in Nova Scotia and contains the provincial capital, Halifax. If you want to be where the action is, you’ll want to set your sights on Halifax. Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) is the second largest region with a population of about 93,000. If you prefer a more laid-back small-town vibe with access to city amenities, you might want to consider CBRM. If an actual small town is what you want, there is no shortage of beautiful towns to make home! Plus, the housing tends to be more affordable and the lots are bigger. The program limits the amount that residential property assessments can increase by each year, but it will reset to market value when a home is bought or sold. What about other taxes? There is an additional tax that must be paid when purchasing a house or land in Nova Scotia. The Deed Transfer Tax can be between 0 and 1.5 per cent of your purchase price and must be paid within 10 days of closing. The rate varies by municipality so be sure to check your rate at www.novascotia.ca. Lastly, utilities. The major internet providers are Bell and Eastlink, with smaller companies and municipalities providing more local service. The only power company is Nova Scotia Power. High speed internet access has been a challenge, but that is changing with the help of Develop Nova Scotia and an ambitious project to have 97 per cent of the province covered by high speed by 2022. Tips to help add curb appeal to your home this winter.

Now that the green grass is fading and the leaves have fallen, it may seem more challenging to add curb appeal to your home. Although you cannot depend on your garden’s flowers to make a first impression, there is plenty that can be done during the snow-filled months to make your house look warm and inviting.

Here are a few tips to help you make your home sparkle during those bleak winter months.

1. Clean up! This is applicable anytime of year, but is especially important in the winter. Make sure that any debris and leaves left over from the fall have been cleaned up so that buyers can see the potential of your yard. Tidy up flower beds so that they look clean and ready for spring.

2. Add some lights. Use the long winter nights to your advantage. Add some white strands of lights to your home’s entrance or shrubbery to make it look welcoming. Also make sure your home and your driveway are well-lit. This safety feature will impress potential buyers and also make your house stand out amongst the rest.

3. Update your house numbers and the hardware on your door. This is a great way add some style to your property. Make sure the new numbers are large enough to read from the street for safety and also so that potential buyers can find you.

4. Add some colour. Try adding a new mailbox in a statement colour such as red. Wreaths on doors and windows are a great place to add some colourful ribbon.

5. Go green. Your flowers may have lost their blooms, but you can add some life to your home’s exterior with evergreens. Two evergreens on either side of your front door make a welcoming and beautiful entryway. Think about adding a Christmas tree to your front porch during the holidays. Line your walkway with evergreens shrubs such as boxwood or juniper and add some white strands of lights to highlight them.

6. Snow removal. Make sure you remain diligent about snow and ice removal. Potential buyers make their first impression within moments of seeing your home. Make sure handrails and stairs are cleared and user-friendly. This simple safety tip will allow potential buyers to envision an inviting home rather than focus on a treacherous entrance.

7. Create a welcoming entryway. This also helps to make a lasting impression. Add some style to your front porch with some weatherproof furniture. Throw in some cozy pillows and a blanket, some lanterns for lights. Try adding an old sled or skates along with some birch branches to your wintry vignette to convey a cozy and stylish feel.
