THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT CHOOSING AND WORKING WITH MOVERS Summer is right around the corner, which means many people will be moving. Some people choose to move themselves, but that can be physically and mentally exhausting and not always worth the savings. Using professional movers often makes a lot of sense. But how do you make sure you’re using a good one? Here are some tips to get started.

Look at publicly available information. All interstate movers are required to be both licensed and registered with the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. That site will also have complaint reports for registered movers. Your local Better Business Bureau also tracks complaints. Get an Estimate. You need an estimate based on a walk-through. If the mover refuses to do so or insists that you sign a contract (or make a deposit) before doing so, find someone else. Make sure they’re insured. If they’re not, don’t work with them. Federal law requires interstate movers to offer liability coverage for any damage to your property at no cost. However, the baseline coverage is 60 cents per pound per item, regardless of the item’s value. Most movers also offer additional coverage for a fee, which you should consider after reviewing the terms. Before declining such additional coverage, think of how much your items are worth, and if 60 cents per pound is enough to make it right if something happens. Ask Questions Up Front. What is the hourly rate? Is that per-person or for a whole team? If it’s perperson, see how many movers will be present. What other costs (fuel, packing materials, etc.) will you be charged, and at what rates. You can save some money by packing yourself, but the pros can do it faster and more

efficiently. Regardless, make sure to get quotes from multiple companies. Look at the Paperwork. Look at the bill of lading, which outlines everything being moved, the origin and destination, and costs. It’s your receipt, so review it closely, make sure it’s correct and keep a copy! Movers are also required to provide you with a copy of a pamphlet titled “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”. Make sure you get and read it. Supervise.

Make sure you or someone you trust is there to oversee the whole process. You can help direct the movers and point to which room boxes and big items belong. Also, if a problem arises, you’re there to bear witness and assist.

Storage. If you can’t move directly from one place to another, many movers will offer to store your stuff. See how much it will cost for the space as well as moving into and out of that space. Gratuity. While not required, it’s nice to tip your movers for good service. While supervising the move, bring some cold waters or sports drinks to offer the movers. Kindness goes a long way!

ON A WALK-THROUGH You’ve done your research online and narrowed down the neighborhoods and homes you’re most interested in. The next step? Visiting your top picks in person. But once you’re at the open house or walk-through, what should you look for? What real estate information will you be able to determine live that you couldn’t find in the photos and details you already looked at online? To help you prepare, here’s a list of what to pay close attention to when on a walk-through:

THE HOME’S EXTERIOR. Photos online only allow you to get so close, so while you’re on site, carefully inspect the entire exterior of the home. Is the paint chipping? Are the shingles in need of repair? How about the gutters? Repairs needed in any of these areas will factor greatly into

your bid or can serve as a helpful negotiating point.

THE SMELL. One thing you definitely cannot research online is how a home smells. So put your nose to work to sniff out mold, pet damage, air quality and general cleanliness.

THE LIGHT. Sure, those appealing descriptions may have raved about the home’s natural light but visit every room of the house to make your own assessment. THE NEIGHBORHOOD. Sure, you found out all about school quality, crime stats, proximity to transportation and more during your online research, but nothing compares to being there. Look at traffic patterns, the condition of surrounding homes, the neighbors, their yards, etc. After you’ve toured the house, take a few minutes for a quick stroll around the block. This will give you a much better sense of the neighborhood you may come to call home. Once you narrow your choices down, try driving to and from the homes during rush hour, so you can see what a potential commute would be like. THE SIZE. You might think that with tons of photos and the exact square footage listed online, you have a good idea of the size of the home, right? Yes and no. You know the size on paper, but you don’t really have a sense of size until you’re there. Photos tend to make rooms look more spacious and ceiling height adds another layer to perceived spaciousness. Above all, the most important thing you will determine from a walk-through is hard to measure – how the home feels. Square footage, kitchen and number of rooms aside, you need to be able to picture yourself living there. And that is something you can’t determine until you’re there. SPACE-SAVING STORAGE HACKS FOR YOUR GARAGE All of us could probably use more storage, and its tempting to turn to your garage when you’re in need. But far too often, once people start using their garage for storage, the less it’s used for its real purpose – storing your vehicles.
