clean the filter. It’s likely gross and full of gunk from last summer. The filter is located right behind the front grill that blows air into your room. If it’s a paper filter, trash it and put in a new one. If its mesh, clean it with warm, soapy water and let it dry. If the folder is really moldy, soak it in a solution of bleach and water.
• Clean
• Next, clean the evaporator coil and
sure you follow some basic maintenance tips to ensure you’ll be chilling in your living room and not sticking to your leather couch. If you have a Central AC system, brave the heat for a minute. Clear the leaves and debris out of the base of the AC’s condenser. If it has a drain, make sure the drain is clear too. the blower’s fan blades, tighten any loose mounting bolts, and, if the fan motor has oil ports, put a few drops of oil or spray WD-40 into the ports for lubrication. Finally, mop up any excess water inside the condenser and reassemble it. When it comes to window A/C units, all you need is 20 minutes at the beginning of the summer to keep it running smoothly. Unplug your unit and
condenser coil with a soft-back vacuum brush. The evaporator coil is behind the filter and the condenser coil is behind the compressor.
• Finally, wipe down the outside of the
unit and check the window seal for cracks or wear. If there is a gap, hit it with some foam weather stripping to ensure a proper seal.
If you live in a particularly brutal area for summer heat and you tend to keep your window unit blowing all summer long, you’re probably going to have to clean it a few times before fall. It can be a pain, but it’ll keep you from dealing with a broken AC unit in the middle of July. If you’re able to afford it, contact your HVAC company to keep your AC unit well maintained. Or, do some research on getting a central air unit installed. Whatever situation is best for your home situation, make sure you’re chilling this summer, and not melting.

SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Our home’s electric system and the safety of it is often something we take for granted. From just hitting a switch to light a room, to plugging in electronics and charging devices, we don’t really think of the electrical current coursing through the house. However, it’s important to consider whether or not your homes electrical system is safe. The following tips will help you keep you and your house safe from the dangers of electricity.
Know your electrical system better. Look at your circuit breaker and see what runs on each current. Learn the limit for electrical overloads as well. An overload can cause an electrical fire, which spread quickly. Use generators responsibly. If a storm knocks out your power a generator is great for keeping important appliances like refrigerators and hot water heaters running. However, they can quickly turn dangerous if overloaded. Also, give them ventilation, as they can introduce poisonous carbon monoxide. Practice extra care around water. Swimming pools and hot tubs are great, but keep electronics and electricity away from them. Keep the stereo speakers at a distance and dry off before using any electrical items. Also, be mindful in the bathroom, and keep hair dryers or curlers away from the sink or tub.

Go easy on the extension cords and plugs in outlets. Extension cords are great for reaching a little further, but remember to use them safely. Don’t chain multiple cords together, and don’t use items that pull more electricity than the cord can handle. Same goes for an electrical outlet socket splitter. Making these items handle too much can cause them to overheat, short or even cause a fire.
Follow these tips for safety, and always err on the side of caution when it comes to electricity. Always contact your local electrician when electrical problems or concerns arise. It may also be beneficial to call one out to your home so that they can assess the safety of your electrical system.

Protecting your home from bugs should be a priority when summer rolls around, so follow these tips to keep the winged, six-legged demons away from your home.
Keep the Outside Free of Debris. Firewood stacks, compost bins, and yard waste are like a five-star resort for insects. Keep firewood covered in the summer months, or give it away. dump out or clear out any areas of standing water; it’s a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Keep landscape beds free of weeds and plant debris, they can house bugs. And keep branches and plants away from your home’s foundation. Dry Up Damp Areas. Bugs are always searching for water, especially in the summer heat. Some home invading pests, such a silverfish and centipedes like to hang out in damp places. So fix leaky faucets, and make sure the outdoor spigot isn’t dripping. You’re probably blasting the A/C all summer long, so make sure it’s not leaking. Cracks and Holes Are Like a Wide Open Door. Closely inspect your home’s foundation and any window or door screens. Make any necessary repairs.
