Trip transit insurance is another form of insurance that can be obtained from your homeowner’s insurance agent. More than likely it will not completely cover all the perils involved, but it will add to the dollar amount you can collect for your loss.

One point to be made clear is that insurance through a mover is not really insurance. When you insure against loss and damage through a mover, you are technically releasing your goods to the mover at a declared dollar value determined by you. Your mover will pay you for loss and damage according to that declared value and the type of coverage you chose.

Two Ways To Insure

Recently there was a news story about a moving van that burst into flames on a busy highway. The story detailed a fire in the van portion of the vehicle and the resulting traffic nightmare. After my initial concern for the safety of those involved, my thoughts turned to the owners of the goods on that burning van. Did they have any insurance coverage on their belongings while they were being moved?

In the case of the moving van fire, the shipment belonged to an Army family. Reportedly, the blaze that destroyed all their possessions was due to a mechanical issue with the brakes on the main trailer. It appears there was minimal insurance and the moving company will only reimburse the total loss up to $75,000. Personal insurance will only cover a little more. In all, the family who suffered this loss will only receive approximately one-third of the value of their goods. Their substantial loss will not be reimbursed by the moving company, their personal insurance, or the Army. In addition, many meaningful personal belongings were destroyed. A dollar value cannot be attached to them.

There are many perils associated with moving, and it is not that uncommon for a mishap to occur on a loaded moving van. Therefore, it is not advisable to put all your worldly goods on a moving van without sufficient coverage for loss or damage. Take this issue seriously and discuss insurance coverage with your mover as well as with your homeowner’s insurance agent.

Over the years I have surveyed thousands of recently-moved consumers about their household goods moving experience. It never fails to surprise me that consumers often do not insure their household goods while they are in transit. Or, if they do insure their goods, they frequently fail to obtain adequate protection.

Is Insurance Really Necessary?

The correct term for insurance obtained through your mover is “loss and liability coverage.” The type of coverage your mover offers depends on whether you move locally, within your state, or out of state. Actually, your mover self-insures your goods and offers several levels of loss and damage coverage. Minimum coverage, known as Limited Liability, covers your shipment for just a few cents per pound. Added-Valuation provides somewhat better protection, but Full Value Replacement is the maximum coverage available. It will cover your goods for their full replacement value up to the declared value of your shipment. The choice is yours, and your premium will reflect that choice.

Many people have the mistaken notion that insurance is not really necessary when they move. After all, what could happen? They are just moving their household goods from Point A to Point B.
