Airing of the Quilts At this year’s 2nd Annual Airing of the Quilts, you’ll discover hundreds of quilts throughout Historic Downtown Franklin. Businesses and homeowners will be hanging quilts from their store fronts and porches that will create an unbelievable burst of spring color throughout the Town of Franklin, NC and Macon County. This year we’ve made this event even bigger! In addition to the quilts hanging all over Franklin’s downtown and all around the county, look for Quilt Related vendors, special quilt exhibitions and a quilt appraiser to tell you about your treasured quilt(s).

Standing Indian Basin

Standing Indian Basin offers numerous types of outdoor activities for the entire family, and is one of our favorite places to escape to, especially in the summer months. The area is also just a short drive away from downtown Franklin, making an escape easily accessible for area residents and visitors alike. Here, you’ll find 3 different types of campgrounds, hiking trails galore, wild trout fishing, swimming, waterfalls, picnic areas and much more. We grew up spending our summers at Standing Indian Campground, splashing around in the creeks and roaming through the woods exploring all there was to see. We love it up there, and think you will too!

A L B E R T M O U N TA I N F I R E T OW E R We recommend Albert Mountain Fire Tower because of its unique position atop Albert Mountain (elev. 5,210 ft.), allowing for fantastic 360-degree views of the Nantahala National Forest and beyond. On a clear day you can see as far as Whiteside Mountain near Highlands, NC. We suggest checking the weather before making this trip. If the forecast calls for high winds or a chance of a thunderstorm, we recommend holding off until a better day. A metal fire tower isn’t the place you want to be during a thunderstorm. There are multiple ways to access the tower via forest roads #67 & #83, picking up the Appalachian Trail from either road. Our website lists 3 such ways and we would suggest doing some research there before making your first trip to Albert Mountain.

Explore what used to be one of the largest Tulip Poplars in the country, John Wasilik Poplar. A truly majestic sight to behold, and considering the tree is actually dead, it still commands respect while you stand before it. You’ll start to imagine what it was like back before it was topped by Hurricane Opal (1998). The hike down to the tree along John Wasilik Poplar trail is one of the most peaceful settings around. You’ll hike down to the tree via a well worn path from ‘Rock Gap’. This is a popular Appalachian Trail access point. The A.T. crosses right in front of the parking area. The forest opens up into a gorgeous “cove-like” area, well shaded by the surrounding Tulip Poplars. We recommend hanging out for a while and relaxing before your hike back.

Cullasaja Gorge

The Cullasaja River Gorge (Kul-la-sa-jah), along US Highway 64 between Franklin and Highlands, NC is one of the most scenic drives around. Actually, It is part of the longer, ‘Mountain Waters Scenic Byway’, and for good reason. Along this route you’ll find multiple waterfalls, recreation & picnic areas, fishing spots, hiking trails and more. Please allow us to highlight a few for you below.

C ullasaja Falls Cullasaja Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls around. From the upper cascades, the falls plunge approximately 250 feet into the Cullasaja River Gorge below. The falls can be seen with a quick glance from the roadside as you drive by. But, to get the full affect you’ll need to access one of the very narrow pull-off spots. The pull-off spots will be in your eastbound lane, on the right by the guard railing. Be careful here! This is a busy highway and is very curvy, but the view of the falls is well worth it!

Cullasaja Falls

Q uarry Falls (aka - Bust-Your-Butt Falls) Quarry Falls is located just east of Cullasaja Falls. As you twist and turn your way along US Highway 64 E, you can’t miss Quarry Falls on your right. This area is more of a large cascade than an actual waterfall, but don’t let that discourage you from stopping. With an easy access point, parking for Quarry Falls can be found along the side of the highway or just past the falls on the left. After you park, grab your camera, bathing suit and a friend and spend an afternoon relaxing by the river. The pool at the base of the falls is very deep and creates a fantastic swimming hole. However, we want to caution you and recommend NOT climbing on the falls, no matter how tempting it can be.
