To live in the United States, the greatest country on earth, is certainly a blessing. To live in the mountains of Western North Carolina is not only an added bonus, but as close as it gets to “heaven on earth.” Although it’s easy to take for granted as we get caught up in our daily lives, all you have to do is look around at the natural beauty of this place for a quick reminder of how blessed those of us who live in the Smokies truly are! The primary reason our country is so great is freedom; the freedom our forefathers fought and died to obtain and protect. I recently watched the 2001 HBO series Band of Brothers for the first time. Although very graphic, it was a touching reminder of the horrors of war and the selfless sacrifice so many who served our country have made. I think we need a reminder from time to time of the true cost of freedom and how fragile it is to maintain from generation to generation.
