America’s Favorite Drive:
The Blue Ridge Parkway With cooler air blowing through the Autumn leaves, this is the time of year to get out and about on the Blue Ridge Parkway! It’s shaping up to be a great leaf season and we want to encourage you to get out and explore during the brilliant display of color along ‘America’s Favorite Drive’. In the following pages we want to introduce you to some of the best spots along the Blue Ridge Parkway to take in great views and maybe even hike to a beautiful waterfall.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of those “must do’s” when you are anywhere near this area, especially during the fall leaf season! When you visit the “quieter side of the Smokies” you couldn’t be in a better location to access this legendary drive that traverses 469 miles amongst many of the highest peaks East of the Rockies. Allow us to suggest two stops that are great for the entire family to enjoy - but don’t limit yourself if you’ve got the time. Our website features numerous stops along the Parkway, detailed directions and notes included. The first stop is called Graveyard Fields. The Graveyard Fields trail system is suitable for every family
member. This is one of the most popular spots on the Parkway so beware of a crowded parking area when you arrive. Fall is usually a great time to visit and less crowded except during peak leaf viewing. It’s said that Graveyard Fields got it’s name when a “tremendous wind blow” occurred more than 500 years ago and uprooted the Spruce forest. Over the years the remaining root stumps and trees rotted leaving behind dirt mounds that resembled a graveyard and the area has been known as Graveyard Fields ever since. The forest eventually recovered only to be destroyed by a catastrophic fire in 1925. This fire consumed the forest and the ancient mounds. Graveyard Fields offers great hiking, waterfalls, swimming and backcountry camping. Allow for plenty of time to be spent here, at minimum half a day to take in all you can! Our next stop is the Devil’s Courthouse Overlook and Trail. Sounds interesting right?! This area provides an outstanding vantage point for endless views into the Blue Ridge countryside. This trail is recommended to anyone willing to hike up the steep buy mainly paved grade to the summit. It takes anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes depending upon your fitness level. When at the top you will have views of up to four states as well as mulitple peaks of prominance both near and far. Be sure to check out the metal plaques that the park has placed at the summit detailing which direction you’re looking and what exactly you are looking at. There is folk lore related to Devil’s Courthouse due to it’s devilish look and is also related to another point of interest on our website, Judaculla Rock (see page 6).
