Registration opens June 6 for summer reading program Tommy Mann Jr.

Summer vacation for local school children begins in just a few days and the return of an annual event is right around the corner. The Bridge City Public Library, located at 101 Parkside Drive in Bridge City, will begin its registration period on Monday, June 6, through Friday, June 10, for its annual summer reading program, which is open to children ages pre-K through fifth grade. Each child which registers will receive a reading log. Reading logs which are returned fol-
lowing the last program on July 20 will receive recognition at the end of program awards event the following week. The library staff requests all children be accompanied by a parent or guardian at each weekly program. Participation by local children has been increasing steadily each year and the library had a huge turnout in 2015, according to K’Lynn Ess, children’s librarian. “Last year was a really good year as we had about 200 kids register for the summer reading program,” Ess said. “This program lets us reach out to the community and we have
more than just children from Bridge City come to our programs.” Ess explained the programs are designed to be fun, as well
as educational, and the group’s which participate each week help fulfill those objectives. “Each presenter does a different educational program
each week,” she continued. “Whether they are talking about oceans, like our first program will be about, or science, which is the second
week, it is all geared toward reading but it is a lot of fun while learning about those

BC’s Valedictorian Steve Nguyen Staff Report For The Record
Valedictorian Steve Nguyen is the son of Dung Nguyen and Hoa Tran. He is the brother of Amy Nguyen. He ranks top of his class of 155 with a GPA of 4.8828 on a weighted 4.0 scale. Steve is an Academic Honor Roll student, treasurer of the Spanish club, treasurer of the National Honor Society, and class representative in Student Council. He was chosen as Student of the Month for September for the Bridge City Chamber of Commerce. Steve has participated in
UIL Academics for four years in general math, number sense, and science. He placed first at NGUYEN the district meet for science. He plays saxophone for symphonic, marching, and jazz band. He is also involved in peer tutoring. Steve plans to attend Lamar University in Beaumont as a Mirabeau Scholar this coming school year in pursuit of a degree in Chemical Engineering.

Kyle Bergeron fires a pitch against the West Orange-Stark Mustangs during Game Two of the regional quarterfinal series of the state baseball championship on Saturday. Bridge City who lost Game One to the Mustangs came back to defeat the Mustangs in the double header on Saturday. Bergeron went the distance for Big Red to win the matchup 6-3 followed by a Game Three 3-2. Bridge City will next face Waco Robinson, the No. 4 ranked team in Class 4A. Salutatorian Scarlett Neely is the daughter of Paul and Elizabeth Neely. She ranks second in her class of approximately 120 students with a 4.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. She is a four-year member of Student Council, which includes serving as President during her senior year, a fouryear member of the Orangefield High School Debate Team, a two-year member of the OHS Theatre Troupe, two year member of the National Honor Society, the founder and President of the Young Democrats Club, a member of the Texas Association of Future Educators, two-year member of Future Farmers of America, and four-year member of the Academic Challenge Team, which including being appointed Captain in her senior year. Along with being the highest ranking student, Casey has perfect attendance for his entire school career, and an All A Honor Roll student during his entire school career. He has received Teacher Appreciation Awards in Science, English and History, has been certified in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and, at the Current Issues and Events State Meet, been part of the team which earned first place and he received a second place individual honor. Outside of school, Casey is involved with Saint Helen’s Catholic Church where he is a Altar Server and is active in the Church Youth Group and its fundraising projects and soup kitchen. He is also a volunteer with Special Olympics, Campfire USA and Relay for Life. He has also achieved the rank of 3rd Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo.
Salutatorian Jordan Christopher Curl is the son of Jeff and Crystal Curl. He is the grandson of Don and Jerry Hartsfield and Katherine Mouton. Jordan is ranked second in his class of 155 with a GPA of 4.8433 based on a weighted 4.0 scale. He has been recognized as a National Merit Commended Student, an academic honor roll student, historian of the National Honor Society, member of the student council, one year member of the ATSSB All-Area Band, and one year member of the TMEA All-Region Band. He was chosen as the Bridge City Chamber of Commerce Student of the Month and received a Voice of Democracy Award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. Jordan is a squad leader in the BCHS
Band and a three-time regional qualifier in tennis. He is also a member of the Spanish Club, Chess Club, CURL Academic Team, Ultimate Frisbee Club, and Ping Pong Club. Jordan attends St. Henry’s Catholic Church and has volunteered with the Southeast Texas Hospitality Center and the Bridge City Knights of Columbus. He has also volunteered at Winfree Baptist Church’s Vacation Bible School. Jordan plans to attend Lamar University in the fall on a Mirabeau Scholarship and will major in nursing. He hopes to eventually become a CRNA – Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

She was a District qualifier NEELEY in the Stark Reading Contest, chosen to represent the area by the American Legion Auxiliary at Texas Bluebonnet Girls State, part of UIL One Act Play All-Star Cast, and a Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce Student of the Month. Other recognitions from previous years include Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, UIL One Act Play Honrable Mention All-Star Cast, and runner-up in the Voice of Democracy Essay/Oral Contest. Scarlett enjoys musical outlets as well as she has played piano for 10 years and is selftaught on the ukulele.
Closures scheduled for Memorial Day weekend Tommy Mann Jr. For The Record
The extended holiday weekend is approaching, which means multiple business and government office closures are ahead. The majority of all local, county, state and federal offices will be closed on Monday,
May 30 in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. All non-essential offices in the cities of Orange, West Orange, Pinehurst and Bridge City will be closed on Monday. Offices will re-open at normal business hours on Tuesday, May 31. All non-essential Orange County government offices
will be closed on Friday as well. Garbage will run as normal in Orange and West Orange, as well as most other locations. Garbage collection service for information on collection schedules. The United States Postal Service will not be delivering mail on Monday, but it will resume normal operation hours
and delivery on Tuesday. Financial institutions such as Community Bank, Bridge City Bank and First Financial, Sabine Federal Credit Union, MCT Credit Union and Mobil Credit Union will be closed in observance of the Memorial Day holiday and reopen on the next regularly scheduled business day.
