BCISD Assistant Superintendent Gina Mannino has been awarded a Doctorate in Education Leadership.

torate in Education Leaderships from Lamar University. Mannino completed her dissertation on March 20 and will receive her diploma from Lamar on May 17. Mannino was named Assistant Superintendent of BCISD in 2008 upon the retirement of longtime school administrator Joe Chenela. She had became principal at Bridge City High School in 2006 after serving three years as principal of Sims Elementary. With her doctorate, Maninno plans to continue working with teachers, administrators and the Bridge City community. In the course of her career she would like to become a superintendent. “I love seeing the students we work with succeed,” Mannio said. “It could be as simple as reading a children’s book for the first time or earning a Mirabeau scholarship. Working with the administrative team to develop programs and courses that allow students to develop academic and career skills is very rewarding.”

“Being an educator is a way to serve my community,” Mannino said. Mannino’s roots go way back in the Bridge City school system. She is a 1984 graduate of Bridge City High School and was also the Cardinal mascot ‘Big Red.’ A four year member of the BCHS student council she was a member of the Mock Trial team that advanced to state that year. Following graduation she attended Lamar University earning a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1989. In 1998 she was awarded a Master of Education in School Administration from Lamar University. “I loved being a teacher. Igniting a passion for learning in students is very rewarding,” Mannino said. “As an administrator I am able to help nearly 200 teachers ignite the passion for learning in their students.” To earn her doctorate Mannino successfully defended her dissertation titled “Professional Development: Identifying Effective Instructional Coaching Activities.” She is a member of Leadership Southeast Texas, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the Texas Elementary Principal and Supervisors Association. She serves on the board of directors of Texas Middle School Association. She was named ‘Region 5 Advocate of the Year’ for the Texas Association of Gifted and Talented. She is a member of the Texas Association of School Administrators and the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals.

Being a police officer was in his blood and after four years away from law enforcement, Joey Hargrave has returned and currently works at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. “Once it is in your blood, it is hard to get out,” Hargrave said. It was four years ago this week, Hargrave left the Bridge City Police Department. He worked in Bridge

City for 26 years. Initially, when he began his job in law enforcement, it was intended to be temporary. ‘Once I got both of my feet into it, I never moved,” he said. At first after he left, he didn’t want another job in law enforcement and decided he would go back to school. He became a licensed vocational nurse and worked the night shift at a local hospital. This was a big change for Hargrave. With his 26 years

of law enforcement experience, he was the “go to guy” for questions and advice on how to handle a situation. But, in the unfamiliar territory of the nursing field, he found himself asking others lots of questions. Hargrave began each 12 hour nursing shift with a positive attitude and remained constantly on the move. Some of the things he learned from his years with the police department carHARGRAVE Page 3A

ACA enrollment period is winding down David Ball

For The Record

There’s another deadline looming in addition to the April 15 income tax deadline. American consumers have only one week remaining in the current calendar year to enroll for and purchase health insurance before the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) March 31, 2014, deadline for enrollment, according to an article from the Texas Association of Health Underwriters. Failure to purchase by the deadline may result in a tax penalty as well as potentially devastating medical costs due to the lack of coverage for the remainder of the year. As the deadline approaches, experi-

enced benefit professionals are available to assist individuals and families — a service that does not add to the cost of a policy. One Orange County resident who enrolled early was Mark Dunn, a self-employed businessman in Bridge City. Dunn said his health insurance policy was costing him over $600 a month two years ago. It was too expensive and he dropped the policy and went without coverage until he enrolled in the ACA. “I had no help. No worker’s comp or anything. I had to make ends meet, pay bills, and meet my obligations. I didn’t have company insurance,” he HEALTH CARE Page 3A
