They still have a total of nine vehicles to patrol the streets of Bridge City to make it a safer place to live. But, the SUV is the only one of its’ kind for the BCPD. These two vehicles were part of the annual budget, according to Brad Frye, of the BCPD. In the next budget year, the police department will add another vehicle to their fleet. The two newest vehicles will feature new graphics on the sides. Gone are the bold colors which have been replaced with “ghost writing” which can be more readily seen when the lights reflect off of it. The new patrol vehicles are also cageless, which is a partition between the front seats and the back seat. According to Ronnie Denton, of the Bridge City Police Department, if a person is needed to be transported and are of a violent nature, then one of the other patrol vehicles may transport them instead. In addition, the newest vehicle do not have lights on top of the vehicle, but inside the front and rear windshields. The SUV has room for a storage compartment too. The vehicles give the officer a comfortable and safe ride during the long 12-hour shifts. “It’s easy to get in and out of,” Denton said. He adds, which sometimes when in a rush can come in handy.

Making the best of life living with MS Debby Schamber For The Record

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade—which is what Stephanie Zimmerman did when she found out she had Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system, which is made

up of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by

the disease, according to the National Mutliple Sclerosis Society. After graduating from LIttle Cypress-Mauriceville High School, Zimmerman attended Lamar Port Arthur to get her basic education and where she played softball. She later attended Lamar Institute of Technology and received a degree and licensure to practice

dental hygiene. In August 2008, Zimmerman was 21 years old and had just finished her summer classes and was a couple of weeks away from starting her second year in dental hygiene school when she first discovered something was terribly wrong. “That night when I stood up to go to bed I felt as if my dia-

phragm had fallen asleep and was kind of tingling, “she said. “I thought I had just been sitting in the same position for a while so I shrugged it off and went to bed.” Within three days the feeling had taken over her body and she was tingling and numb from her neck down. LIVING WITH MS Page 3A
