Orange County Commissioners’ Court held a special session on Monday. The county received $272,212.77 from the State Comptroller for sales tax allocation for the month of September. Bills approved for payment by the court totaled just under $315,000, including $3,288.38 to Schaumbrug and Polk, Inc from the general fund for shelter of last resort payment number 16 and $2,300 to Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor for indigent funeral expenses.
The burn ban is still lifted. “We’re in very good shape again this week,” said Jeff Kelley, director of MERRITT Orange County Emergency Management. “With the level of rain we’ve received over the last couple of weeks and the overnight recovery again is high, it’s kept the fire danger down.” Orange County Sheriff’s Department was given permission by the court to sale a seized fifth-wheel trailer to the Orange County Drainage
District for $1. Sheriff Keith Merritt said the trailer was acquired two years ago. “We had no use for it at the time it was seized. We only had one truck that was able to pull it. Ever since we’ve had it,
the drainage district has utilized it,” said Merritt. The sheriff’s department wanted to get the trailer removed from their inventory. Selling it to the drainage district is the method the County
Attorney Doug Manning suggested. Mark Wimberley, maintenance director was given permission to receive applications and hire a full time employee in the housekeeping depart-
ment to replace an employee that resigned last week. Also reported Monday, the transportation department has installed a 60,000 gallon COUNTY BUSINESS PAGE 2A

Volunteers are a very important part of the Texas AgriLIFE Extension office in Orange County according to Dr. Roy Stanford, AgriLife Extension agent. Over one hundred volunteers assist the staff of five which includes two other extension agents. Paula Taker is the Family Consumer Science agent and Marie Kenney oversees the 4-H program. “Working with volunteers, you find out what in the com-

munity are the issues and how can we educate the public on those issues,” said Stanford. “We make the connection with the people in the community and find out what they need to know to improve their lives or help them in what ever way that is. People in north Texas, their issues are different than the people down here.” Over the next few months, we will be highlighting some of the areas that, with the assistance of volunteers, the AgriLIFE office is working to educate the public in areas of need. One of the programs near and dear to Jan Dicharry’s heart is the Junior Master Gardeners. She has also worked diligently to help plant demonstration gardens at the location of the recently dedicated greenhouses located in the Jewel Cormier Park in Orangefield. Dicharry became a member of the Master Gardeners about a year and a half ago and is also a Texas Master Naturalist Sabine-Neches Chapter. “Our Master Gardener group does work hand in hand with the (AgriLIFE) Extension office on many different projects,” she said. “I’m helping to build a demonstration garden at Bridge City (Middle) School. My sister is a science teacher there, she has a Junior Master Gardeners group. We’re trying to get a demonstration garden over at the Bridge City school. VOLUNTEERS PAGE 3A

The Junior United States Tennis Association was designed for kids ages five to 18 to play singles, doubles and mixed doubles against other teams. The Southeast Texas Junior USTA program is gradually building with each season. This year, the 12 and under team and the 18 and under team placed fourth in the 2011 USTA Texas Fall JTT Sectionals held in New Braunfels, Texas on Nov. 18-20. The Southeast Texas team members come from all over the Golden Triangle, but six came from Bridge City: Jared Buffington, Luke Placette, Hayden Oceguera, Kinsey Arnaud, Ciera Mires are on the 18 and under team; and Brandan Simon is on the 12 and under team. “The Junior USTA is not really a big thing in this area, but we are very proud of their achievement,” Crystal Mires said, head coach of the 18 and under team. “This program is a big deal in big-
ger cities but we don’t have a large tennis background in this area. For us to go to the championships and place fourth is a big deal.” Mires’ team includes Buffington, Placette, Oceguera, Arnaud, and Mires, as well as Trina Schreck from Vidor and Ariana Levine from Beaumont. The fall season started Oct. 1 and the kids in this region put in a lot of hard work on their own. “The bigger cities have tennis facilities with a professional tennis player there every day,” Mires said. “The kids from bigger cities have facilities like these to train at. The Southeast Texas region does not. Our players take private lessons to better their skills.” Twelve and under coach, Bryan Simon, said players on his team have been know to be beat high school players. His team includes his son Brandon from Bridge City; Jayci Wong from Port Arthur; Tyler Williams from Nederland; Bailey Braneff, John Oliverio, Josie Lagato, Caroline Chessar and Sammy
Schimtt all from Beaumont. Simon has been involved as a parent with the Junior USTA for four years and starting coaching with the Junior USTA this year. His son, Brandan is a sixth grader at Bridge City Middle School. The Junior USTA League has several age divisions: in the QuickStart League, there is an eight and under team and a ten and under team; in the 11 and older league, there is a 12 and under team, 14 and under team and 18 and under team. Each division in the 11 and older league has a beginner, intermediate and advanced division. QuickStart Tennis uses a format that is modified for age appropriate courts with racquets and tennis balls for kids 10 years old and younger. This allows the youngest participants to establish control and rally during their matches. For players 11 to 18 years old, lessons are provided on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. By the Lamar Men’s and Women’s tennis team and coaches. However teams practice once a week .
