t’s heard everywhere from little league to high school to college to the pros. Being the best, number one, also drives businesses to go the extra distance in offering products and service beyond customers’ expectations. This section is about Lodi businesses that were voted by The Record’s readers as the best in their respective categories. Also listed in the categories are businesses that are considered by you to be “One of the Best.” While strictly speaking there can only be one “Best” in each category, those who are “One of the Best” have much to be proud of as well. In many cases, there were few votes between first and second. Businesses who got any votes in the Best of Lodi Readers Poll should take pride that some of their customers took the time and made the effort to cast a vote for them. Readers registered and completed an online ballot. That takes loyalty and customers who appreciate the daily effort these businesses make to serve them. At the top of each category is the business that garnered the most votes. Listed below in order of votes received are the next one or two businesses that also received significant votes in the category. We thank all the readers who took the time to support their favorite businesses by filling out a ballot. Five readers’ ballots were drawn at random and they received $100 gift certificates. They are: Francisco Banda of Stockton, Natalie Bay of Woodbridge, Vicki Kennedy of Lodi, William Mault of Acampo, and Julia Gomes of Stockton. This non-scientific poll was conducted online at www.recordnet.com/bestoflodi between February 18th and March 2nd, 2010 among San Joaquin readers. Questions about Best of Lodi should be directed to the Advertising Department at The Record 209-546-8351. ■

E

ntering it’s 6th year as Lodi’s premiere consignment store, it’s a popular destination and its artfully decorated storefront belies the vast square footage full of consigned furniture and other items. Haley Jackson, owner of New & Again states “It’s a revolving door of inventory. Some of our customers come in every week just to see what’s new.” What she doesn’t mention is that the items for sale are extraordinarily clean, in good condition and well organized, making for a shopping experience as pleasant as any, especially considering the alluring prices. Their simple 50/50 split of the sales price with the consignors, makes for a stress free, or as they call it, “no fuss no muss” arrangement. Jackson with her interior design passion, and her father, Alan Levy, with his lifelong love of antiques, auctions, research and entrepreneurship, combined their unique talents and abilities to bring a much needed store of this kind to Lodi. They also conduct estate sales, ensuring that sellers receive top dollar for all goods to be sold. Using their experience and recordkeeping system, satisfied consignors of this service rave about the service level and efficient methods employed to liquidate estates. Their website, NewandAgainOnline. com, features easy-to-sign-up-for newsletters, merchandise photos, and

clear explanations of how the business works. After 90 days, if items are not sold or removed from the store by the consignor, they are sent to their warehouse, discounted generously and on the first weekend of every month, the warehouse opens for a furniturepalooza-type blowout sale. This event is key to making room for more incoming merchandise and is enthusiastically attended by the public. “It’s a team effort,” says Jackson, crediting her devoted staff for the work they do and the all-around success of the business. n

an Ruiten has seen great improvments and tremendous growth in markets across the United States, expansion, wine club memberships, new winemaking equipment, and tasting room enhancements. Last year in 2010 we saw the addition of our new warehouse which greatly improves our ability for quality control and shipping. Much to our delight, our wine club showed a remarkable increase in memberships, especially in these tough economic times. Our winemaker purchased a new Destemmer which improves the quality of the fruit that goes into making our wines by allowing a gentler handling process and he continues to

buy more barrels for our expanding business as well as other equipment he needs to remain on the cutting edge of winemaking and delivering to you, our members, top quality wine at an affordable price. We also improved our website by installing a shopping cart that makes ordering wine more user friendly. Our tasting room has also seen a rise in our number of visitors, in part, we believe, because Lodi is now known as a premier region for winemaking. We look forward to seeing all of our patrons through the year and hope we are giving you the best possible experience at Van Ruiten. We thank you again for making Van Ruiten Family Winery the Best of Lodi! n

akewood Auto Repair was established January of 1993 by Ken Paige and his son Ken Jr. After many years of success at Lakewood Chevron, Ken decided to transform his full-service Chevron facility into a foodmart and carwash. When customers heard about this, they were upset about losing the auto repair service Ken offered.

That’s how the idea of Lakewood Auto Repair came about. They found a site downtown, transformed it from a door shop into a high-tech automotive repair facility with all the latest technology. Since 1993, Lakewood Auto has managed to build its clientele through honesty and dependability. See our new address below. n

Chris, the vivacious owner, is known throughout the community as a hard worker, loyal friend and sometimes singer (not!) She goes out of her way to insure a unique shopping experience by sharing her knowledge of antiques while giving great customer service with

her quick wit and positive attitude. Second Hand Rose enjoys the honor of winning “Best Antique Store” in San Joaquin and Lodi for nine years in a row and their dedication to customer satisfaction has warranted them accreditation with the BBB. Chris expanded her business in 2010 by opening a second store in Elk Grove. When customers walk in they immediately appreciate the comfortable and inviting atmosphere of the store that features the time-worn and perfectly distressed pieces that are so popular. In fact they were selected to participate in a design contest for the Elk Grove Historical Society’s Black Tie and Santa event that first year and they won first place! n

an and Sandy have been in business for eight years on Lodi Avenue. They have become the favorite flooring, window covering and home remodel store for the 4th year running. They have closed their showroom in Lodi and have changed their store model from “showroom shopping” to “in-home shopping” due to price increases coming up this year. F&M Bank

F

&M Bank has provided financial services to businesses and individuals in California’s Great Central Valley since 1916. Locally owned and operated, the Bank remains headquartered in Lodi, California and proudly serves 10 communities with 24 locations from Sacramento to Merced. The Bank is also one of the area’s largest employers, with over 325 employees and also recently voted “Best Local Employer” in San Joaquin County. As a full-service community bank, F&M utilizes the most advanced technology and provides a wide range of products and services to make both personal and business banking easy. F&M Bank is financially strong with approximately $1.9 billion in assets and is consistently recognized as one of the nation’s safest banks by nationally recognized bank rating firms.* In 2011, F&M remained committed to its long term strategy of doing business with local farmers, business owners and households rather than follow larger national bank’s strategy to pursue high-risk sub-prime loans and securities. The wisdom of this conservative approach to banking was validated as F&M Bank did not have the financial setbacks experienced by their larger competitors or the financial market as a whole. Additionally, F&M Bank did not benefit or participate in any of the taxpayer “bailout” money that was needed by many. Kent Steinwert, President & CEO of F&M Bank, stated, “We are honored to have received more votes than any other financial institution, and extend a special “thank you” to the readers of The Record. We are proud to be recognized as Lodi’s #1 Best Bank for fourteen consecutive years and the #1 Best Bank in San Joaquin County, for the past eight years and the best

Mortgage Lender for the past two years.” “Reinvesting in our local communities remains a key focus at F&M Bank. The Directors, Bank Management, and employees live in the communities we serve and our customers are both neighbors and friends. This is the basis for our many years of success and will remain our focus in the future. We are proud to be a community bank and we remain committed to keeping F&M Bank one of the safest and strongest banks in California,” stated Steinwert. n
