10 Ways to Reduce Cancer Risk There’s no sure-fire way to avoid cancer, but experts say there are a few basic steps that can significantly cut your risk. By Matthew M. F. Miller CTW Features
servings of fruits and vegetables daily because they are loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other substances that lower the risk of cancer. In recent years, some studies have indicated that the association between eating fruits and vegetables and lower cancer risk isn’t as strong as once thought. Most experts still believe that a plant-based diet is one of the best ways to protect overall health. 3. Limit fat in the diet: Studies suggest that high-fat diets or 1. From antioxidant-rich foods to hormone therapies to all-natural cleanses, there are countless cancerfighting promises on the market today. According to experts, however, there are a few basic rules when trying to limit your risk factors. most fats coming from sources of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, such as fish, nuts and vegetable oils. 4. Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer as well as cancers of the colon, endometrium, esophagus and kidney. There’s evidence that obesity increases the risk of cancers of the prostate, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach, ovary and cervix. Some studies estimate that excess weight is a factor in 14 to 20 percent of all cancer-related deaths in American adults. 5. Be physically active: Evidence increasingly suggests that people who are physically active have lower risk of some cancers than those who are more sedentary. From 45 to 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity a day, on most days of the week, is considered optimal to reduce the risk of breast and colorectal cancers. 6. Curb alcohol consumption: Alcohol consumption increases the risks of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, colon and rectum. Women should limit themselves to no more than one alcoholic beverage a day. Men should have no more than two. 7. Limit exposure to radiation: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which comes from the sun, sunlamps or commercial tanning beds, is the
primary cause of skin cancer, the most common of all cancers. 8. Protect against infection: Infections caused by viruses are recognized as risk factors for several types of cancer. Human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted disease, is the most common cause of cervical cancer. Chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C increase the risk of liver cancer. They are most often spread through contact with contaminated blood, from contaminated needles or by having unprotected sex. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS, also increases the risk of several types of cancer. It’s most commonly transmitted by unprotected sex or sharing of needles. 9. Consider chemoprevention: Chemoprevention is the use of natural or synthetic compounds to reduce the risk of cancer or its recurrence. Tamoxifen, prescribed to prevent breast cancer in high-risk women, is the best known chemoprevention agent. A caution: chemoprevention drugs can have serious side effects. 10. Get recommended screening exams: Pap tests, mammograms, colonoscopies and other routine screenings can’t prevent cancer. But screenings can help find cancers early, when treatment is most likely to be successful. © CTW Features

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY HEALTHCARE GUIDE
Secrets to a Healthy Pregnant Body Think about the future of your figure to ensure the healthiest body for delivery By Anna Sachse CTW Features
If you’re pregnant or planning to become pregnant and you’re already looking for a book about how to get your pre-baby body back, Does This Pregnancy Make Me Look Fat? The Essential Guide to Loving Your Body Before and After Baby (HCI, 2009) is not for you. Or maybe it is – just not in the way you were expecting. This friendly but honest book contains no diet tips or exercise routines to get you “back” to where you were before. Instead, authors and beauty activists Claire Mysko (a body image expert and mom) and Magali Amadeï (an acclaimed fashion model and mom) want new mothers to set their sights on the future by striving for the same healthy body image that they would hope to invest within their children. Here Mysako weighs in on how to feel your best about your body, yourself and your role as a mom.
What can a woman do to increase the probability that she will have a healthy body and body image while pregnant? We really advise women to get away from the weight-loss mentality before they get pregnant. What happens often when women are chronic dieters is
that when they do get pregnant and are off their diet plan, they don’t actually know how to nourish themselves. This is a really unhealthy place to be during pregnancy and when you’re a new mom. We encourage women to think about what health means beyond the scale, and what attitudes they want to pass along to their children about food and exercise. Do you want to teach your children that exercise is about burning calories so that they can mold their bodies into a specific size? Or do you want them to enjoy the movement and activity? Follow your own lessons.
Many moms-to-be get anxious about increasing clothing sizes and escalating numbers on the scale – what advice do you have for them? Try to shift the focus away from the scale and appearance, and instead appreciate your body for what it’s doing. If you know those numbers could trigger negative thoughts for you, don’t have them in your face all the time. Both Magali and I decided to take the scale out of the equation entirely. There’s really no reason that I need to track my own weight gain and loss, so I told my OB that I didn’t care to know the number unless there was a health issue we needed to discuss. You can also make clothing sizes less of an
issue by packing up the smaller ones, like those skinny jeans, before you have to think about it.
What would you say to pregnant women who have concerns about their changing bodies, but think that voicing their fears makes them look “bad”? Stop being so hard on yourself. Some women love every minute of pregnancy, some hate it from start to
finish, and then there’s those in the middle who sometimes feel beautiful and sometimes don’t. Yes, the goal is having a healthy body image, but we don’t want women to think that they will screw everything up if they don’t feel wonderful about themselves every day. Nobody’s perfect. The most important thing is that you’re actively working to confront your issues. It may be comforting to talk about your concerns with other women who can offer realistic perspectives.

However, avoid getting caught up in a negative, unproductive feedback loop where you’re simply comparing how much you, say, hate your saggy stomach or your huge thighs. That surface-level anxiety is often linked to deeper insecurities like loss of control, perfectionism and issues from our own childhood, and that’s what we really need to be dealing with.
How can women with expanding bellies respond to insensitive comments from strangers, friends, partners, etc.? You don’t have much control over what other people will do or say, but you can be somewhat prepared by setting clear boundaries and committing to not getting into conversations that will be hard for you. If someone asks how much you weigh, you can say “I’m not comfortable talking about that” or “I have no idea,” and then start talking about something else, like how excited you are about the baby.

What are some tips for feeling beautiful as the belly grows? Our book has a whole chapter on style and beauty, including shopping tips, for both pregnant women and new moms. (For example, get unique, affordable pieces you can alter at vintage stores or online at Rustyzipper.com and Mamastonevintage.com.) You’ll likely have less clothing options to work with due to your shifting shape, but you can change up your outfits with fun accessories like jewelry, scarves, shoes, bags and belts. Many women we spoke with also said that getting a new haircut or French tips helped boost their body confidence.
Any last words for the woman who might have thought she wanted a guide to getting her pre-baby body back? Childbirth itself is the biggest workout of your life. Appreciate what you’ve accomplished – your baby came from this body. © CTW Features

What’s the big deal between women’s and men’s health? A lot By Deborah Douglas CTW Features
While we may all be created equal, we’re not created equally, and that has huge implications for our health and well-being. Thankfully, researchers have begun to factor women’s health differences into the development of new products, drugs and therapies. Here are some factors that make a big difference in our lives. Sherry Marts, Ph.D., scientific director at the Society of Women’s Health Research in Washington, D.C., explains. 1. After consuming the same amount of alcohol, women have a higher blood-alcohol content than men, even when you allow for size differences. Alcohol is absorbed through the stomach, and women’s stomachs empty slower than men’s. And women produce less of the enzyme that breaks down alcohol – alcohol deydrogenase – causing them to reach a higher bloodalcohol level. 2. Women who smoke are 20 percent to 70 percent more likely to develop lung cancer than men
who smoke the same number of cigarettes. Scientists don’t know why yet, but evidence suggests that women are expressing a gene that predisposes them to lung cancer. It’s more important for women and girls to never start smoking. Although it helps to quit, you may never recover from the initial lung damage that occurs from that first pack of cigarettes. 3. Women tend to wake up from anesthesia more quickly than men. This is just one example of how men and women respond differently to medical treatments. By paying attention to them, we can improve the health of men and women. 4. Pain medications, known as kappa-opiates, are far more effective in relieving pain in women than in men. Drug companies and researchers are finding more and more differences in how women and men respond to pain and pain relief. For example, evidence
suggests that ibuprofen doesn’t relieve pain for women as well as it does for men. 5. Women are more likely than men to suffer a second heart attack within one year of their first. This is partly because women tend to have heart attacks at older ages (60s and 70s, compared with the 50s and 60s for men). A woman’s heart-attack symptoms may go unrecognized longer than men’s. That’s why - while you’re still young - you should explore your family’s history of heart disease, assess your risk, talk to your doctor, and take control by living a healthy lifestyle whether you’re 25, 35 or 45. 6. The same drug can cause different reactions and different
side effects in women and men – even common drugs such as antihistamines and antibiotics. Ultimately, this knowledge will help drug companies offer better medications and formulations specifically for women or men, thanks to a new dedication to understanding gender differences. 7. Women have stronger immune systems to protect them from disease, but they are more likely to get autoimmune diseases (where the body attacks its own tissues) such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma and multiple sclerosis. These diseases are difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are vague and come and go. Family history is one key to diagnosing automimmune diseases, and you
San Joaquin County healthcare Guide
should keep in mind that a family member may have suffered from a different type of autoimmune condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. 8. During unprotected intercourse with an infected partner, women are two times more likely than men to contract a sexually transmitted disease and 10 times more likely to contract HIV. Practice safe sex. Need we say more? If he won’t use a condom, take matters into your own hands, or don’t do it. Moreover, understand your vaginal environment, and don’t ignore those merely “bothersome” infections that could predispose you to more harmful infections later. 9. Depression is two to three times more common in women than in men, in part because women’s brains produce less of the hormone serotonin. Women tend to be more open about their feelings, so it could be that women are diagnosed more often because they’re more willing to recognize symptoms of
depression. This is a good thing. Know the symptoms (including changes in eating patterns, weight gain, weight loss, insomnia, too much sleep). And know that depression is a biological disorder. We don’t criticize diabetics for being unable to produce insulin, and depression is a disease with a biochemical basis. 10. After menopause women lose more bone mass than men, which is why 80 percent of people with osteoporosis are women. Childhood. Osteoporosis is a disease that starts in childhood when children don’t consume enough calcium or vitamins, which encourage calcium absorption. Make sure your kids drink enough milk and eat balanced meals. If your kids are lactose intolerant, alternatives include lactase-free milk or calciumfortified orange juice. Get your kids (and yourself) involved in weight-bearing exercises now so they’ll have healthy, strong bodies later. Copyright © CTW Features
