The COVID-19 pandemic challenged almost all aspects of our lives, including education. Even in this time of crisis, educators around the world are taking their first steps to adapt on this inevitable "new normal", which makes use of the modern technology as the primary instrument to continue the teaching and learning process. As Confucius said, "Our greatest glory is in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." Therefore, we, The Reflection, supports every educational hero in these challenging times who chose to rise above the circumstances and continue to light and guide the dimming lives of the youth. The Reflection: UPC 2020 Overall Champion For the first time since its rebirth on 2016, The Reflection, the official student publication of the School of Education prevailed as the overall champion in the University Press Conference 2020 held last January 29-30. T h e p ub licat ion staffers were able to bring home five individual awards. Abelardo Jr. Cortez, Shaina Sunga and Angela Cordova were hailed as champions in the Layout Category, Feature Writing, and Science and Technology Writing respectively. On the other hand, Milker Gutierrez and Sophia Valencia were able to win the 1st runner up awards in the Editorial Cartooning and Humor Category.
The Reflection also reigned supreme in the group category when Abelardo Jr. Cortez, Nicole Diane Liwanag, Chesa Filosofo, Daphne Nicole Medina and Lester Samson were collectively awarded as the champions in the Collaborative and Desktop Publishing Category. The Reflection incurred a total of 1,100 points, surpassing the other publications from the different departments.
Editor in Chief Abelardo Jr. Cortez considered The Reflection’s win as “a product of the publication’s hard work and great aspiration to win.” He reminisced, “Noong 2019, isang award lang ang napanalunan natin. Ngayon, overall champion na tayo. Sobrang saya ko lang dahil finally nakamtan na ng Reple ang pangarap na totoo niyang pinaghandaan at pinagsumikapan.” He added that the awards received
were merely indicators of highly skilled staffers and the high quality performance of the publication in general. The Nexus from the School of Arts and Sciences was hailed as the 1st runner up while The Solution from the School of Engineering and Architecture landed as 2nd runner up in the competition organized by The Angelite, the official student publication of Holy Angel University.

a pagdiriwang ng Christmas Festival 2019 noong ika-19 ng Disyembre, kasama ng School of Engineering and Architecture, nagharing muli ang School of Education (SEd) matapos nitong masungkit ang kampeonato.
Ang naturang pagkapanalo ay naisakatuparan matapos masungkit ng SEd ang ikalawang puwesto sa Song Ensemble Competition at ikatlong puwesto naman sa Short Film Competiton. "Hindi namin akalain na makakamit pa namin ang Overall champion, unlike
nung Earth Days na talagang pinaghandaan namin. Ngayon, nagsimula kaming magduda kung makukuha pa ba namin pero isang napakalaking pasasalamat na nakamit pa rin ang champion. Sobrang saya sa pakiramdam dahil dalawang champion na ang nakuha ng SED [matapos makuha ang kampeonato sa Earth Days 2019]," sagot ni Francis Miranda, ang Vice Chairperson ng SEd College Student Council. Ang Short Film entry ng SEd na pinamagatang "E ya mu Akakit ing Sala" ay nagwagi ng ikatlong puwesto sa hatid nitong kuwento ng
pag-asa at inklusyon na pinagbidahan nina Cherish Cunan at Vina Venzon. Inamin ng direktor ng pelikula na si Abelardo Jr. Cortez na nabigla rin siya nang malamang isa sila sa mga nagwagi, "Hindi talaga namin expect na mananalo pa kami. Kung titingnan kasi, bigatin ang mga ipinadalang pelikula ng ibang department. Akala ko wala tayong laban, pero thank God, tsumamba pa!" sagot niya. Ang Christmas Fest ngayong taon ay umikot sa temang “Lumiere: Light to One’s Christmas.”

Online classes, negatibo sa SEd
L
umabas mula sa isinagawang online sarbey na mayroong negatibong pananaw ang mga mag-aaral ng School of Education ukol sa pagsasagawa ng online classes.
Sa gitna ng Enhanced Community Quarantine, naglabas ng isang survey form online ang The Reflection, ang opisyal na pahayagan ng School of Education, na ipinakalat sa buong komunidad ng SEd upang malaman kung ano ang pananaw ng bawat magaaral ukol sa online classes matapos nila itong maranasan nang ginawa itong alternatibong daluyan ng klase ng Holy Angel University nang biglang ipinatupad ang total lockdown sa Luzon noong Marso ngayong taon. Nagkaroon ng 85 respondente mula sa bawat seksyon sa SEd ang naturang sarbey. Ayon sa resulta, 80% ng mga respondete ang sumagot ng negatibong pananaw sa pagpapatupad ng online classes. Ibinahagi naman ng ilang respondente ang kanilang dahilan sa likod ng negatibong pananaw na ito. Una na rito ang kawalan ng sapat na “personal gadget” gaya ng cellphone, tablet o laptop at ang pinakamahalang kailangan- ang WiFi signal o internet connection para sa online learning. Napag-alaman din mula sa sarbey na ito na mayroon pa ring 10% sa mga respondente ang walang “personal gadget” samantalang 56.5% o higit kalahati ang walang “stable internet connection.” Dagdag pa rito, naitala rin bilang isang dahilan ang kakulangan sa sapat na interaksyon sa pagitan ng guro at estudyante na nagreresulta ng hindi pagkakaunawaan at ‘di tunay o ganap na pagkatuto. “Unclear and vague instructions compared to actual learning (face-to-face), the
teachers are already aware that online is different from actual learning and yet they will give vague instructions where the students have to guess. As teachers, it is their responsibility to give clear instructions that covers all of the said task, that is to say, to give detailed instructions”, tugon ng isang respondente. Naisaad din ang kakapusan ng oras sa paggawa ng mga naibigay na gawain dahil nagsasabaysabay ang deadline ng mga ito. Paliwanag ng isa, “patong-patong ang activities, mas mahirap ang mga activities at sabay-sabay pa iyon. Nakaka drain ng utak, masakit sa ulo, masakit sa mata dahil nakatutok kami sa laptop or phone nang higit walong oras.”Dagdag pa ng isang respondente, mas bumigat pa diumano ang trabaho ng mga magaaral sa online classes kumpara sa klase sa loob ng klasrum. Nabigyang-diin din ang pagiging instrumento ng online classes bilang isang uri ng assessment lamang. Paliwanag ng isang respondente, “I observed na online tasks lang ang ginagawa, hindi sya learning. Ang inuupload ng mga profs ay puro activities, quizzes and etc. pero bihira yung mag-post ng discussion. Though sometimes naguupload ng powerpoint, pero I think hindi siya enough to be considered as "learning" kasi wala yung discussion and yung prof. Sa ibang school kasi, nakikita ko, yung prof nagpoprovide ng video ng discussion nya (as in sya yung nasa video) to elaborate the topic pero hindi namin y’on personally naexperience.”
Ang ilan pang nabanggit na dahilan ng negatibong pananaw ay ang mga sumusunod: kawalan ng “feedback” mula sa mga guro ukol sa mga ginawang online activities, pagiging talamak ng “cheating”, at ang pag-aatas ng gawain ng ilang guro “outside the school hours.” Samantala, nagbigay naman ng mungkahi ang mga mag-aaral ng SEd hinggil sa pagpapatupad ng online classes sa susunod na akademikong taon. Ilan sa mga ito ang pagbibigay konsiderasyon sa pagtakda ng oras ng pasahan ng mga gawain, paglalahad ng detalyadong mga tagubilin, at pagsasagawa ng mga video conferences. Higit na mahalaga, hiling din ng mga mag-aaral na tugunan ang pangangailangan ng mga estudyanteng kapos at walang “personal gadget” at “stable internet connection” na magagamit para sa isinasagawang online classes. Sa kabila nito, nakita rin sa resulta ng sarbey na mayroon pa ring positibong dala ang online classes. Ilan sa mga ito ay ang mga sumusunod: pagiging mainam na alternatibo lalo na sa mga panahong tulad ng COVID-19 pandemic na kung saan delikado ang paglabas sa bahay; pagkatipid at pagiging ecofriendly ng sistema dahil hindi na kailangang i-print ang mga isinasagawang aktibidades; at ang pagkakaroon ng mas maraming oras at pagiging mas tipid dahil hindi na kailangang bumiyahe at gumastos pa papunta sa paaralan.

Angelites unite for affected Taal victims Driven by their Angelite value of compassion, the Holy Angel University community including the students, student councils, organizations, employees, cooperative, and even the alumni, unites altogether to give assistance to the victims of the Taal Volcano eruption on January early this year. The Office of the Community Extension Services (OCES) which was headed by Ms. Shirley Mae Marcos led the university’s relief operations. The collection of donations by OCES started from January 15 until February 4. A total of 67,733 pesos was received coming from cash donations and a portion from the Calamity
Fund. In-kind donations from Angelites were also forwarded to OCES and converted into 146 packs of relief goods. In-kind donations include used clothes, canned goods, N95 face masks, biscuits, 3-in-1 coffee, instant noodles, sleeping mats/ banig, bottled water, and rice.
On February 22, the OCES staffs together with more than 60 employees and student leaders of HAU participated in the relief operations conducted at three sites in Batangas City. Included in the recipients of these relief goods were the following: 85 families from Barangay Guitna, Agoncillo, Batangas; 66 families/evacuees who
were relocated at Canda Elementary School in Balayan, Batangas; and 29 children/ residents of the Little Angels Home Orphanage in Tagaytay City. OCES coordinated with the Lipa Archdiocesan Social Action Commission, Inc. and Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay City in determining the target benefeciaries.
MaicaBhea tandem breaks SINLAG domination in SEd The MaicaBhea tandem of the KAYABE coalition finally broke the SINLAG party domination in the College Student Council since the establishment of the School of Education after six of its party candidates were announced as winners in the HAUlalan 2020.

Bhea Andrea Eneria of KAYABE will serve as the CSC-SEd Chairperson for the next academic year after she won with a total of 105 votes while Maica Ann Joy Simbulan from the same party will serve as the CSC-SEd ViceChairperson after winning with 108 votes. Consequently, the top four councilors also came from KAYABE with Rhanie Ocampo as the first-hailed councilor who acquired 117 votes, the highest recorded in this year’s Eduk Elections. Ashley Gomez, Piolo Monzon and Dale Lacson from the same party also joined
Ocampo in the roster of councilors for the next academic year. On the other hand, Patrick Sta. Cruz, John Stephano Villegas, Maria Angelica Torres and Justin Dale Dizon from the SINLAG party were also hailed as winning councilors in the election. After her win, Eneria told the SEd students, “Expect that we will do everything at all cost for the School of Education. We will not promise to do this and that, but we will work for the SEd. A history for us and just like our win, the SEd will make history once again.”

Amid COVID-19
DepEd launches free online learning management system “Education must continue even in times of crisis whether it may be a calamity, disaster, emergency, quarantine, or even war,” said Leonor Briones, the current DepEd Secretary. Due to the implementation of the Enhanced Community Quarantine in Luzon as well as to other places in the country, the Department of Education (DepEd) introduced DepEd Commons, an online learning system in the middle of March 2020. DepEd Commons will serve as an alternative solution for the disturbance of classes in times of suspension for public schools. The online system allows learners and teachers to gain access to a variety of learning materials and Open Educational Resources (OERs). It was made possible by various expert teachers coming
from DepEd schools. Ensuring the quality education that DepEd provides, resources that can be found within the system were cited and acknowledged properly before their release. In order to make the system more accessible to Filipino students and teachers, DepEd, together with other Telecommunication corporations such as Globe and TM, allows the platform to be accessed without incurring any data charges. However, sites that will be accessed outside the online platform shall be charged appropriately.
Earlier on April, DepEd expanded the platform to reach out to the students coming from private schools and for the out-ofschool learners under the Alternative Learning System (ALS) program. In hopes of this initiative, educators from private schools can contribute to the development of OERs which can be used as supplementary learning tools for the students. As of April, DepEd Commons has garnered a total of 4,236,667 subscribers. The number of users is projected to continue to rise in the coming days, according to DepEd.

Kaakibat nito, aktibo si Mayor Lazatin at ang buong lokal na pamahalaan sa pagkilos sa usapin ng COVID – 19 sa buong siyudad. Sa nakalipas na mga linggo sa ilalim ng Enhanced Community Quarantine, masugid na pinaplano at inaaksyunan ni Pogi ang pangangailangan ng bawat Angeleños. Una na rito ang pagbibigay ng food packs sa mga bahay bahay ng 33 barangay sa Angeles City. Ayon sa tala ng City Information Office noong Abril 20, mayroon nang 138, 350 food packs ang nai-
pamahagi sa mga tahanan ng 33 barangay ng Angeles. Naglaan din ng 15 million pesos budget si Pogi bilang financial assitance sa mga Jeepney at Tricycle Drivers na tumanggap ng tigiisang libong piso. Naghandog din siya ng financial assistance sa mga Senior Citizens (na may k a b u u a n g b u d g et n a P55.815 million) at Vitamin C supplements na may halagang 25 milyong piso na naibigay sa kani-kanilang tahanan. “Mayaman man o mahirap, lahat po ay makakatanggap ng mga ayudang binababa ng City Hall sa bawat barangay dito sa siyudad,” saad ni Lazatin. Dagdag pa rito, nagtalaga rin siya ng Mobile Pampang Market sa iba’t – ibang barangay sa Angeles City na may itinakdang oras at araw sa bawat barangay upang maobserbahan ang social distancing.
Humiling din si Lazatin sa Angeles Electric Corporation ng konsiderasyon para hindi muna maglabas ng mga ‘pay or cut’ billing statements sa pagbabayad ng kuryente. “We are making this request due to the panic that 'pay or cut' bills induce among residents, which often results in people crowding Bayad Centers to make their payment and defeats the purpose of the Enhanced Community Quarantine", aniya. Naglabas din siya ng paalala sa publiko na iwasan ang diskriminasyon sa mga Health Workers ng lungsod, partikular na sa mga Health Worker na nakadestino sa Quarantine Center sa City College of Angeles. Napapatupad din ang lokal na pamahalaan ng regular disinfection gamit ang misting trucks sa mga barangay sa siyudad. Patungkol naman sa

Araw – araw naglalabas ang City Information Office ng Angeles City ukol sa update ng COVID-19 cases sa Angeles City.
Nag-uumpisa pa lamang tayo

ang kaharapin ng buong mundo ang krisis na dulot ng pagkalat ng COVID-19, nabuksan din ang pintuan ng mga paaralan sa tinatawag na “new normal” na kung saan binabagtas na ng lahat ang daan patungo sa online education bilang alternatibo sa mapanghamong panahon ng pandemyang nabanggit. Maraming mga estudyante ang nagpahayag ng pagtutol sa new normal na ito, bitbit ang iba’t ibang mga daing, na pinaniniwalaan naming nararapat lamang na mapagtuunan ng pansin.
Noong ikapito ng Abril, naglathala ang Holy Angel University ng Facebook post na kung saan inihayag ng university president na si Dr. Luis Maria Calingo na magiging online na ang paraan ng edukasyon sa pamantasan. Umani ng iba’t ibang reaksyon ang pahayag na ito, na kung saan idinaing rin sa comment section ang iba’t ibang isyu ng mga estudyante gaya ng kawalan ng personal na gadget at stable na internet connection. PANGANGAILANGAN SA NEW NORMAL Sa isang online sarbey na isinagawa ng The Reflection, lumitaw na negatibo rin ang pananaw ng mga mag-aaral ng School of Education sa pagpapatupad ng online classes. Ang primaryang dahilan ng mga mag-aaral ay ang kawalan ng gadget at internet connection ng lahat na magagamit para sa online learning. Napag-alaman din mula sa sarbey na ito na 10.6% pa rin ng mga respondente ang walang personal gadget samantalang 56.5% o higit kalahati ang walang stable na internet connection. Samu’t saring mga petisyon ang inilabas ng mga estudyante at ang pinakanakapukaw ng pansin ng madla ay ang makaestudyanteng Angelite 7-point demands na pinangunahan ng Anakbayan HAU, HAU Speak Now, HAU Student Council at ng The Angelite na isang petisyong umani ng 9,372 na pirma. Ikalawa sa listahan ng petisyon na ito ay ang hiling ng pagpapahinto sa online classes kung hindi masusuportahan ng pamantasan yaong mga estudyanteng walang sapat na kagamitan. Nagtagumpay ang petisyong ito nang dinggin ng pamantasan ang hiling ng mga mag-aaral. Noong ika-12 ng Mayo, pormal na inanunsyo ni president Calingo ang plano ng pamantasan na hindi magtaas ng matrikula at iba pang bayarin na lubhang ikinatuwa ng mga mag-aaral. Kalakip ng anunsyong ito ay ang hatid na Student Economic Relief package (SERP) ng pamantasan na naglalaman ng listahan ng mga tulong/ tugon ng HAU gaya ng konsiderasyon sa mga bayarin sa enrollment at pagbibigay at pagpapatuloy ng maraming mga scholarship, grant at loan. Dalawa sa primaryang laman ng SERP na ito ay malaki ang kaugnayan sa pagpapatupad ng online classes. Una na rito ay ang planong pamamahagi ng 1,000 tablets (“made available for check-out for a period up to twelve months, renewable upon request”) sa mga piling mag-aaral na may malubhang pangangailangan sa mga kagamitan para sa online classes. Kabilang din sa laman ng SERP ay ang kasalukuyang pakikipag-ugnayan ng pamantasan sa mga internet service providers at telecommunication companies upang mag-
bigay ng dikwento sa mga wifi internet plans o data plans para sa mga mag-aaral ng HAU. Mahalagang bagay ang aksyong ito ng pamantasan na sana ay maging “new normal” na rin sa kanya dahil hindi natatapos ang isang problema sa pamamagitan lamang ng paglalahad ng solusyong hindi matututukan hanggang sa dulo. Magpatuloy sana ang pamantasan sa pag-iisip ng paraan para mas mapatunayan niya ang unang talata ng itinakda niyang Quality Policy na nagsasabing, “We are all about the students!” Sa kabila ng kahanga-hangang inisyatibo ng HAU, kung susuriin, sa laki ng populasyon ng mga mag-aaral, malinaw na hindi sapat ang bilang ng mga ipamamahaging tablet upang mapunan ang pangangailangan ng lahat ng mga nahihirapang estudyante. Kung kaya, naniniwala kami na ang nabanggit na inisyatibo ng paaralan ay unang hakbang pa lamang sa mga kailangang gawin sa pagsasaalang-alang ng kalagayan ng mga estudyante. Isang kasabihan ukol sa edukasyon ang nagsasabing, “It takes a village to educate a child.” Sa pagtahak natin sa bagong dimensyon ng edukasyon, pinakamainam na panahon ito para magtulungan ang lahat. Tinatawagan namin ang pamahalaan upang magsagawa rin ng mga aksyong makatutulong sa pagpapagaan ng pasaning dala ng new normal sa ilang mga estudyante. Kaugnay nito, tulad ng plano ng mga opisyales ng School of Education na tulungan ang mga estudyanteng walang gadget at internet connection, sumuporta rin nawa ang bawat departamento ng HAU pati na ang komunidad sa labas sa mga magaaral sa pamamagitan ng mas marami pang inisyatibong mag-aangat sa kanila sa lumulalang digital divide dulot ng pagpasok ng lahat sa new normal. Ang mga lider estudyante naman ay tinatawagan din namin upang maglunsad ng mga gawain na hindi lang pumupuno sa mga nakasanayang mabababaw na pangangailangan ng mga estudyante, bagkus, magsagawa nawa sila ng mga mas mahahalagang inisyatibo gaya ng pagsusulong ng mga donation drive o anumang paraan para mapunan ang pangangailangan ng mga magaaral na kanilang kinakatawan. DEKALIDAD NA PAGKATUTO SA NEW NORMAL Samantalang naglatag na ang pamantasan ng solusyon kaugnay ng access sa online classes, pag-isipan rin sana nila kung paanong hindi mawawala ang kalidad ng edukasyon. Sa huling pulong ng mga opisyales ng HAU kasama ang ilang mga mag-aaral noong ika-11 ng Mayo, nailahad ang plano na hikayatin ang mga propesor na maging “lenient” at magbigay ng maraming mga konsiderasyon.

The Reflection Nagpapasalamat kami sa maunawaing hakbang na ito, ngunit hiling namin na sa kabila ng pagiging magaan ng kabuuang pagpapatupad ng online classes, hindi nawa maisakripisyo ang kalidad ng edukasyon. Isa sa mga itinuturong dahilan sa likod ng negatibong pananaw ng mga estudyante mula sa SEd sa online classes ay ang hindi ganap na pagkatuto ng mga ito gamit ang mga online platforms na kanilang nasubukan bago magtapos ang nakaraang semestre. Daing ng marami, imbes na matuto, nagiging daan lamang daw ang online classes para matambakan sila ng gawain. Kung kaya, tulad ng hiling ng maraming estudyante sa sarbey na isinagawa ng The Reflection, maging ganap at epektibo pa rin sana ang pagkatuto sa kabila ng lahat ng ito. Kung kaya, nananawagan kami lalo na sa mga guro na sa panahong ito, nawa’y mabigyang kabuluhan ang bidang konsepto sa Big History ng HAU- ang Goldilocks condition. Sa pagpasok sa new normal, hiling namin bilang mga mag-aaral na maghatid ng edukasyong not too hard at not too easy. Hiling namin ang pagkatutong “just right” na may kalakip na halong pag-intindi habang hindi isinasaalangalang ang kalidad ng paghubog sa amin. Alam ng lahat na hindi magiging madali ang pagpasok natin sa new normal lalo na pa sa ating mga Angelites na hindi sanay sa karanasang ito. Malaking pagsubok rin ang dala nito dahil kaakibat nito ay ang lumalaking agwat sa pagitan ng mga may kaya at ng mga naghihikaos sa buhay. Kung pakakaisipin, ang pagpasok natin sa bagong dimensyong ito ng edukasyon ay isang pagsubok na tumatawag sa lahat- mapa-pamahalaan, komunidad, administrasyon ng paaralan, mga guro, at estudyante -na gawin ang kanilang parte upang hindi tayo malihis sa landas patungo sa inaasam nating ganap na pagkatuto. Mapatotohanan nawa ang binanggit ni Dr. Calingo, “The education of our youth must continue despite COVID-19. We cannot relegate education to a lower priority as history has been replete with examples of foregone human development when education had been interrupted.”
Sa mga nakaraang araw ipinakita sa atin ang ilang mahuhusay na unang hakbang sa pagtahak sa new normal. Huwag nawa tayong huminto at nawa’y masundan pa ang mga makaestudyanteng inisyatibo dahil ang totoo- nag-uumpisa pa lamang tayo. At sa landas patungong new normal, wala sanang maiiwan, mang-iiwan, at iwanan.

Kailangan natin ng panakanakang ngiti mula sa katabi natin sa klase para alalahaning masarap pa rin palang mabuhay sa kabila ng lahat ng masalimuot na nangyayari.
a hinaba-haba ng panahon ng ating pag-aaral, aminin na nating hindi lahat ng konsepto at teoryang naituro sa atin ay baon natin hanggang ngayon. Madalas, ang mas tumatatak pa nga sa atin ay ang mga panahong napapasarap ang kuwento ng ating mga guro kung kaya biglaan silang nagiging life coach sa atin. Mas nananatili sa memorya natin ang mga panahon ng halo-halong emosyon sa loob ng klasrum. Ultimo kapag nagalit ang guro at hindi na siya nagsasalita, natututo tayo. Walang sasabihin si Ma’am o Sir pero ang dami niyang naipararating sa pamamagitan lamang ng mga titig niya. Nang tumuntong ako sa kolehiyo, nakatagpo ako ng mga guro na totoong nakapagpangiti talaga sa akin. Sila kasi yaong mga tipong parating galing sa puso ang lumalabas sa bibig. Paborito ko ang mga panahon na bigla silang nagkukuwento ng iba’t ibang karanasan noong bago pa lamang silang mga guro. Ang sarap pakinggan ng mga pinakamakabuluhang mga salita mula sa kanila. Naaalala ko nga ang isa sa mga paborito kong propesor na parating nagpapaalala sa amin na ‘di hamak na mas kailangan naming matutuhan bilang mga susunod na guro ang mga bagay na hindi nababanggit sa mga libro tulad ng, “Anong gagawin natin kapag biglang nagrambulan ang mga estudyante natin?” o ‘di kaya “Paano natin pakikitunguhan ang pinakapasaway nating estudyante?” Ang tawag niya sa mga ito ay “hidden curriculum.” Kasama na sa hidden curriculum na ito ang iba’t ibang sensasyong dala ng mga classroom activities na inihahanda para sa atin, na pagpapatunay naman sa pagiging epektibo ng “Learning by doing” ni John Dewey, na isang malaking katauhan sa larangan ng edukasyon. Nariyang minsang mangangatog ang ating mga tuhod dahil sa kabang dulot ng mga reporting sa harap ng klase. Nariyang matutuhan natin ang halaga ng pagtitimpi lalo na sa piling ng mga “dumbbell” nating group mates. At syempre, sino ba ang mangangalimot kapag sa sobrang lalim na ng usapan sa klase ay napapakuwento na at nagbabahagi na ng luha ultimo ang pinakatahimik nating kamag-aral? Ang mga nabanggit ay ang mga itinuturing kong pinakamahalagang natututuhan natin bilang mga estudyante. Ngayong sumasabak tayo sa “new normal” sa pagpapatupad ng online classes bilang alternatibong da-
luyan ng pagkatuto, hindi ko maiwasang malungkot dahil ang mga paborito kong “hidden curriculum” na mga ito ay sigurado nang masasawalang-bahala, lalo na pa ngayong papasok na ang akademikong taon na kung saan magiging asynchronous na ang ating pagkatuto, na ang ibig sabihin ay hawak na natin ang sarili nating oras. Kung kaya, paalam na sa mga maliligayang araw ng mga pinakamakabuluhan nating karanasan sa loob ng klasrum. Mahirap tanggapin pero oo, ito na ang new normal. Para sa iba, ekstra lamang na maituturing ang mga maliligayang sandali na tulad ng mga nabanggit. Pero iba ang kaso sa mga teacher education o Eduk students na gaya natin, dahil ang mga maliligayang araw na ito ay parte ng ating training para maging epektibong mga guro. Naniniwala ako na malaking pagsubok ang online classes sa layon ng sarili nating departamento (School of Education) na hubugin tayo hindi lang sa isip, kundi, lalo na, pati sa puso. Sapagkat totoo na ang puso natin ang pinakamalaking puhunan natin sa mapanghamong propesyon, este “bokasyon”, na ating tinatahak. Nagmumula sa pusong ito ang marubdob nating pagnanais na maging mga sulo na gagabay at mag-iilaw sa madidilim na buhay ng ating mga magiging estudyante. Dahil sa new normal, madalas na nating matatagpuan ang ating mga sarili na mag-isang nagbabasa, sumusulat at tumatapos ng mga gawain sa loob ng ating mga bahay. Paalam na rin sa mga maliligayang araw ng pisikal na interaksyon natin kasama ang ating mga kamag-aral. Naaalala ko tuloy ang mga kaklase ko. Bukod sa husay na ipinamamalas nila sa klase, madalas ay natutuwa ako sa tuwing magbabahigaanan kami ng mga politikal man o hindi na ideya habang naglalakad sa corridor, kumakain sa canteen o habang nakatambay sa malamig na paligid ng PGN basement. Naaalala ko ang ilan pa ngang mga brain teaser na pakulo ng isa kong kaklase na talagang bentang-benta sa amin. Mahirap mang tanggapin pero alam kong ‘di na namin mararanasan sa papasok na semestre ang mga ligayang ito. Kung kaya, marahil ay nahulaan niyong patungo rin ang tudling na ito sa pagsasabi ko na tulad ng maraming kapwa ko Eduk students, mas gusto ko pa rin ang pisikal na klase sa loob ng silidaralan kung ikukumpara sa alternatibong ...Ituloy sa pahina 23
Pagpapatahimik sa ABS-CBN: Legal na Usapin o Personalan?
N
akapanlulumong isipin na ang kalayaan ng ABS-CBN sa pamamahayag ay direktang inatake ng ating sariling gobyerno na siyang dapat na pumoprotekta sa karapatang ito. Maraming kuru-kuro na ang kapalarang sinapit ng istasyon ay dahil sa mga batas na nilabag nito o ‘di kaya naman ay dahil sa napaso nilang prangkisa, subalit tila ito ay paraan ng administrasyon, sa pamamahala ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte, na pagtakpan ang kanilang mga personal at pulitikal na kagustuhan – ang patahimikin ang midya. Hindi totoo na walang ginawang aksiyon ang pamunuan ng istasyon upang baguhin ang kanilang prangkisa na mapapaso na sa ika-4 ng Mayo, matapos ang 25 na taong pagiging epektibo nito. Taong 2014 pa lamang ay nagpasa na ito ng renewal application sa 16th Congress, na kalauna’y kanila ring binawi at napagdesisyunan na umapela na lang ulit sa susunod na kongreso. Ika-10 ng Nobyembre 2016 nang muling magpasa ito ng aplikasyon na nanatiling pending hanggang sa katapusan ng 17th Congress noong Hunyo 3, 2019. Sa loob ng humigit -kumulang na tatlong taon, bakit walang ginawa ang Kongreso ukol dito? Sa pagpasok naman ng 18th Congress, naging kabi-kabila na ang pagpasa ng apela. Umabot sa halos siyam na bills ang ipinasa sa Kongreso, at ang lahat ng ito ay nanatili lamang na pending na naman. Talaga bang mabagal ang pagproseso ng Kongreso sa mga apelang ito o sinasadya nilang hindi dinggin at asikasuhin ang mga ito? Bakit sa dinami-rami ng ginawang pag-apela ng istasyon, ni walang silang binuksan sa mga ito? Bakit hindi naging agaran ang kanilang aksyon at sinimulan pa ang pagbubukas sa mga ito kung kailan malapit nang mapaso ang prangkisa ng istasyon? Marahil, tinototoo nga ni Duterte ang kanyang mga banta laban sa ABS-CBN na pipigilan nito at walang kasiguraduhan na mabibigyan ng panibagong prangkisa ang istasyon. Bukod pa sa nanganganib nitong prangkisa at mabagal na pagtugon ng Kongreso ukol rito, nakisabay rin si Solicitor General Jose Calida ng quo warranto sa Korte Suprema laban sa ABS-CBN na siyang nagpapatanggal sa prangkisa nito dahil sa umano’y pagkakaroon ng foreign share ng kumpanya, na labag sa
1987 Constitution na kung saan isinasaad rito na ang isang kumpanya ng midya ay dapat 100% na pagmamay-ari ng Pilipino. Hindi totoo ito dahil ang pagbebenta nito ng kanilang Philippine Depositary Receipts sa dayuhan ay hindi nangangahulugang nagmamay -ari rin ang dayuhan sa kumpanya. Pagdating naman sa mga usaping ligal tungkol sa ‘di umanong pagbabayad ng istasyon ng buwis at hindi pagsasaalang-alang sa kalagayan ng mga manggagawa nito, na siyang mismong iginiit ni Duterte, ito ay pinabulaanan na ng Burueu of Internal Revenue (BIR) at ng Kagawaran ng Paggawa at Empleyo (DOLE). Ang ABS-CBN ay regular pa ring nagbabayad ng buwis at patuloy nitong pinangangalagaan at tinatrato nang maayos ang kanilang 11,000 na manggagawa. Ngunit sa kabila ng mga ginawang paglilinaw ng Senado at ng kumpanya, bakit iginiit ni Calida sa Korte Suprema na alisan ng pagkakataon ang istasyon na pagusapan ang ukol sa quo warranto na isinampa niya? Bakit patuloy na sinisisi ang ABS-CBN tungkol sa sinapit nito sa kabila ng panggigipit sa kanila ng gobyerno? Sa kabila ng pagbibigay ng permiso ng Senado sa National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) na bigyan ng provisional authority ang ABS - CB N, n a n a g p a p a h i n t u l ot s a pagpapatuloy ng operasyon nito habang na pinoproseso pa ng Kongreso ang mga franchise bills, tinuloy pa rin ng NTC ang paglalabas ng cease and decease order nito na siya namang nagpapatigil sa operasyon ng istasyon. Bakit ang ibang istasyon na minsang nanganib din ang prangkisa ay binigyan ng pagkakataong magpatuloy at hindi ipinatigil ng NTC ang kanilang operasyon? Kung titignang mabuti, ang NTC ay nasa ilalim ng ehekutibong sangay ng gobyerno, na pinamumunuan ni Duterte. Ibig sabihin, boss ng NTC ang pangulo. At hindi ba’t nagkaroon ng pagbabanta si Duterte noon na pipigilan niya ang ABS-CBN na makakuha ng bagong prangkisa? Kung tutuusin nga’y nagsimula ang hidwaan sa pagitan ng Pangulo at ng istasyon dahil hindi raw ipinalabas ng ABS-CBN ang kanyang mga political ads noong ...Ituloy sa pahina 23

No matter how developed an AI could be, it will never serve as a replacement for teachers.
echnology is indeed a part of our lives and it continuously would change the coming times. It wouldn't come surprising when technology is used in Education, you would get artificial intelligence. Times have changed for in private schools (and some DepEd schools), we tend to use Powerpoint presentations more than the blackboard and chalk approach. This has advanced further than we currently know for in other countries; they use AI to identify where a student would be falling behind from our most favorite subject, yes, and the mathematics which is called Happy Numbers. Ideally, artificial intelligence would be handy to teachers as aids. It would have been great if artificial intelligence is already at the level when it can help the teachers to grade tests or exams for these are the most timeconsuming challenge the teacher face. Instead of checking individual papers, the teacher would have more time in preparing for his lesson or connect with the students. This would have been ideal for it would lessen the burden in the teacher's shoulders. Artificial intelligence in education is convenient but teachers must still know that they are the teachers, not their AI-assistants so they mustn't be reliant to these tools. Likewise, our generation now is open to AI-assistants in classroom due to the fact that this is what's trending around. We are relying on technology to lessen the work for us; this is the same case in AI for education.
Still, I'd say that AI can never replace teachers for we learn best in experiences. What would the AI teach the students for experiences especially if it would only be through screen? Like what I pointed out earlier, AI is useful for teachers as aid in the teaching and learning process. It may be used for grading and educational softwares are able to adjust for the individualities of the students. "AI will take a lot of work away from the teacher, especially repetitive tasks." - Davy Van Hemelen This is true for the teachers can set the AI to do what it's capable of doing. Like for instance, the student would ask a question to the AI, the teacher can set an answer for that. The AI can collect data efficiently on which are unclear parts of the lesson and the teacher would be able to identify which parts to improve in discussion. AI is also useful as tutor and support outside classroom setting for it would serve as an alternative if the student is struggling on a certain topic. No matter how developed an AI could be, it will never serve as a replacement for teachers. No AI can teach you how to socialize for you would need an actual person for that. Supposedly that AI had flourished, as future teachers, these would be our new aids and tools in teaching. We must know the capabilities they could offer to help us but at the same time, we mustn’t rely on them that much. Granted, there might come a time when the AI-assistants know more than the teachers for it can store data easily, this is when we, the teacher would act as the supervisor of the learning process. We are after all, the teachers.

Naging usapan ng madla ang paglalahad ng opinyon ni Joshua Molo, ang punong patnugot mula ng UE Dawn ng University of the East, tungkol sa palpak na pagtugon ng gobyerno sa mga pangailangan ng mga Pilipino. Kalaunan, napansin ito ng kanyang guro at itinuring na pambabastos sa presidente at sa gobyernong mayroon tayo. Nakalulungkot pang isipin na sa lahat ng pwedeng pumuna sa kanya, guro pa niya ang siyang nag udlot sa paggamit ng kanyang karapatan. Sa oras na ikaw ay ipanganak sa bansang ito, ikaw ay nabiyayaan ng iba’t ibang uri ng karapatan. Karapatan sa pagboto, karapatan sa edukasyon, at karapatan sa paghahayag ng sarili mong opinyon. Ayon sa Artikulo III ng 1987 Philippine Constitution, ang mga mamamayang Pilipino ay maaaring maglahad at magpahayag ng kanyang opinyon. Ito dapat ang siyang unang magpoprotekta sa mga taong kagaya ni Ginoong Molo na sa kasamaaang palad, pinatahimik at sapilitang pinagawan ng public apology nang dahil lamang sa isang taong sarado ang utak sa malayang kritisismo. Ang ibon ay malayang humuhuni sa loob man o sa labas ng hawla. Samantalang dito sa ating bansa, ang pagpigil kay Ginoong Molo na ihayag ang kaniyang saloobin ay isang halimbawa ng hindi pantay na pagpapalaganap ng karapatan. Lumalabas sa isyu na pinagkaitan si Ginoong Molo ng kanyang karapatan na malayang maghayag. Sa sitwasyong ito, tila lumalabas na may-
roon biglang switch on at off ang 1987 Philippine Constitution. Naka on sa may pera at kumakapit sa sistemang padrino at naka off naman sa mga mahihirap, may kapansanan, at sa mga estudyante “dahil wala raw silang ambag sa lipunan”. Sa totoo nga lang, ano nga ba ang pinagkaiba ni Ginoong Molo mula sa ibang tao na nag-share ng isang political meme sa internet? Ano ang pinagkaiba ni Ginoong Molo sa mga taong naghahayag sa kanilang mga saloobin sa isang comment section sa Facebook? Wala. Itinuro sa’kin ng aking guro na ang konstitusyon ang “supreme law” ng bayan na siyang dapat nating sinusundan. Kung ganoon, bakit mayroon pa ring taong kayang baluktutin ang batas at ang mga panuntunang nakasaad dito? Dahil ba sa pera? O dahil sadyang hindi alam ng taong bayan ang hanggangan ng kanilang karapatan at limitasyon? Ang pangyayaring ito ay isang kahihiyan sa ating mga Pilipino. Sa isang iglap, hindi natin akalaing kay dami ng mga lumutang na ignorante at mga nagbabalat kayong mga tao. Isang malaking sampal ito sa atin, na tayo mismong mga naninirahan sa ating bansa ay tila mga musmos pagdating sa pagtugon sa ganitong mga isyu ng lipunan. Idagdag pa natin ang mga social media users na nagkulang hindi lamang sa reading comprehension kundi pati na rin sa kakayahang rumespeto ng ibang tao. Ang social media ay para sa isang malaya at epektibong komunikasyon. Panatilihin nawa ang pagiging demokratiko nito.

or a department whose total population does not exceed 400 students, the School of Education is making a lot of noise. After their first overall win during the RebEARTH celebration and bagged the second overall win during the Christmas Fest, these students pledged to give their best shot and promised to bring glory on the fast-approaching University Days. Audience and dancers flooded the boulevard during the grand opening of the University Days. People were very eager to witness the extravagant performance
from the talented performers. While other departments brought such massive and exquisite props, the representatives from the School of Education gracefully danced their way to gain the attention of the crowd. With their costume accompanied by their outstanding expressions, the performance of SEd is definitely a show stopper. What made this even more heartfelt is the appearance of a teacher figure as she danced with a radiant smile and uplifting aura, as if she was spreading the message of how the teaching profession is an actual bliss from the heavens. She then joined the
army of angels behind her back, making it appear that these holy creatures guided her throughout the path. Goosebumps were felt by the crowd especially by the SEd students among the audience. The fact that these representatives competed like true educators undeniably touched the hearts of the judges and audience. A good head start never disappoints. On its first day, the department was able to grab the gold for the Professors Got Talent and Majigangga Making, silver for the Street Dance and Mass Dance Competition, bronze for the Cooking Festival, and re-

ceived such special awards from the Ballet Academe’s Choice and for being the Best in Visual Presentation. After the announcement, SEd students were jumping around the stage, proudly holding their trophies, and unashamedly performed their victory dance. “My point is do your best, not for me, not just for yourself but for the whole department who believes in you,” said Abelardo Jr. Cortez, the Editor in Chief of The Reflection on his last message before the University Press Conference, one of the highest pointers for University Days. The second day start-
ed like a heated battle between the young and unarmed David against the enormous Goliath. The pressure was high and the overall ranking of SEd is at the stake. The Reflection, a newly rebirthed publication stood against the other big publications on this year’s UPC. Despite their lack of equipment compared to their opponents, the results of their hard work and dedication did not disappoint. Realizations like these taste better when least expected. There were screams and tears when The Reflection bagged the Overall Champion on the UPC and dominated several categories which include

16 | features the Layout Category, Science Writing, Feature Writing, Collaborative Desktop Publishing, Humor Category, and Editorial Cartooning. It was truly a sight when the staffers huddled themselves as they claimed the fruits of their efforts. The victory of the publication is considered a shared glory for the department. It helped to pave the way for the department to be part of the Overall Winners of the University Days. The day ended with another success when the department once again garnered a special award through Kimberly Colin Balala, who was hailed as Ms. Professionalism of Holy Angel University’s Next Top Model. The department managed to retain a smooth sailing on the third day. The attention of the department was on Abelardo Jr. Cortez and Chesa Filosofo, two of the top contenders of SEd for the academic events which were scheduled that day. After his long preparations and researches, Cortez was able to give SEd another gold medal on the event he partook which was the Impromptu Speech Competition. Alongside with this, Filosofo, another talented SEd student gave a heartfelt performance in the Declamation Contest, thus earning another win for the department. Facing a thousand of unfamiliar faces and answering questions in a pressured moment is never easy. Although neither of the two SEd representatives managed to win the title of Mr. and Ms. HAU, the department took pride on the efforts of Dale Lacson and Blanche Mendoza upon fearlessly representing the college. Despite their loss on the said event, the family of SEd welcomes the two representatives with open arms and an immense number of encouragements. The fourth and last day started smoothly for the department when the highlyspirited team of the School of Education acquired the First Runner Up in the Game of the Generals. Meanwhile, Camille Surla, the charming Babsy Vlogger of SEd, was hailed as Champion in the Vlogger Hunt Contest. Later in the afternoon, laughter and cheers
filled the stage when the SEd representatives for Kanto Boys meet Kanto Girls AllStars pulled off an outstanding performance with their skilled lead performer, Lester Samson who effortlessly impersonated a phenomenal artist none other than Vice Ganda. The team orchestrated a very light yet entertaining presentation which knocked the socks of the audience as well as the judges. Aside from this, what made the performance even worth praising is the fact that the representatives poured their
best effort not only to win the event, but also to showcase what SEd is really made up of. The joy of the department continued later on when the most-awaited part of the night came. Just like on the first day, no one dared to speak as the announcer made his way on the stage. People were already betting on which department will soar that night. On the other hand, the SEd students were silently praying, setting aside their trumpets and listened attentively to the announce-
ment.

SEd students were on their feet, rushing towards the stage as they claim the certificates and the trophies. Tears were flowing and genuine smiles flashed on their faces as their hands reach for an embrace. Consequently, the department received dozens of awards that night which includes gold for the Pho-

toscavenger Hunt, silver for the Advocacy Competition, bronze for the Kapampangan Songwriting Competition, and special citations for being the Best Interpreter for the Kapampangan Songwriting Competition and Best Impersonator in result to the exquisite and outstanding performance of Lester Samson. It was truly a good start for the department. SEd was able to regain its spot on the Top 3 of UDAYS 2020. Because of the talents and support of the students, the department became the Sec-
ond Runner Up in the Overall Standing and this won’t be possible without the dedicated students of the School of Education. Their efforts were overflowing and the people were relentlessly working. These students gave their utmost support for their department no matter what the circumstances may be. Why is the SEd making a lot of noise? It’s because the department wanted to prove that they are more than just academics− that they have so much more to offer. The efforts of
these people made up for the small population they have. The dedication in their heartbeats kept their determination to honor the department. That “One family, one SEd” notation that they kept on yelling and maintaining was further deepened as this undaunted department faced the different formidable departments in the University Days. Our (Dean) Alma Matters AMILY - this is what our department is all about. The School of Education, despite its small population, is a treasure beyond the sea. Out of all the existing departments in the campus, you can never find or form a strong attachment like this. God gave you a family that you didn’t ask for. If we are to dissect the department, you’ll have your second-year ates and kuyas, very helpful and reliable titos and titas inside the SEd offices, loud and noisy siblings in your room, your pabibong publication, your ever-active student council and of course, your one of a kind and humble na inay- Dr. Alma Natividad or Dean Nati in short. However, you’ve noticed that the knowledge that you have regarding our dearest inay is shallow. And just like a doting son/daughter, you’ve yearned to know more about her. A Dedicated Ally of Education Dean Nati is not your typical hardworking mother in a family setting. When she lost her mother, she served as the head of her family and the caretaker of her other six siblings. During her tertiary studies, she decided to apply as one of the student aids here at Holy Angel University to support her education. She worked in the high school library for about three and a half years while balancing her academics and also her responsibility as a sister. Things started to sail smoothly when she graduated Major in Filipino in 1993. Although different opportunities began to appear, our Dean decided to be true to her department and started to teach in Chevalier School for 11 years. Not willing to stop her education, she took up M.A. classes and was able to finish them in 1995. In 2001, Dean Nati became one of the parttime instructors of Holy Angel University. Once again, she tactically mastered her teaching schedule during that time. In the morning, she’s one of the greatest Filipino teachers in Chevalier School and one of the beloved College professors during the night.

With satisfaction, Dean Nati is like a mother that takes pride in her students because they are the proud products of this department. Opportunities just kept on stacking. Because of her flexible schedule, she was given the chance to become the pioneer principal at Royal International School. Knowing that this is one of her chances to help the sector of education, she gladly accepted the invitation and gave her utmost efforts and unfaltering service for three years. However, they say that no matter where you are right now, your senses will always long for your home. In 2004, Dean Nati decided to work as a full-time professor here
at HAU. In her fifteenth year of serving her Alma Matter, her efforts blossomed into something worthwhile. Her position escalated from being a professor, a program chairperson, up to one of the favorite deans in the department. Challenge Accepted Handling a very competitive department is not a piece of cake. For Dean Nati, being hailed as the department’s current dean is a combination of
professional growth and fulfillment. Although she has been here for 15 years, Dean Nati faced new challenges that she never experienced before. “Dati, noong teacher pa ako, students lang ang problema ko, pero this time, ikaw na ang caretaker ng buong college. You have to take care of the faculty, facilities, and students, and then you have to work with the admin,” said Dean Nati as she sorted out the weight of being a leader. Dean Nati finds delight in representing our department. However, having a handful of responsibilities means that being a dean isn’t just about being happy and proud. For her, the fulfillment of a teacher and an admin is different from one another. “Ang fulfillment ng isang teacher ay makita ang mga estudyante na maging successful. Ang fulfillment ng isang admin ay ‘yung nakikita mo ‘yung mga plans na natutupad, ‘yung mga vision mo sa college nagiging totoo, ‘yung mga estudyante kuntento. “ A Certified Blue-Blooded Owl Nothing makes you burst out with pride whenever you hear our department’s name being hailed as one of the winners in an important event. While we’ve been hearing the loud cheers from our fellow students, little did we know that Dean Nati has been screaming “S-E-d!” on top of her lungs too. Dean Nati will always have a soft spot for her dear students. For her, SEd students are undeniably a blessing from the heavens. She deeply appreciates the passion and the efforts being poured to promote the department. “Actually wala akong masabi sa kanila. Saludo ako sa mga sakripisyong binibigay nila para lamang maiangat ang department natin. Kapag may iaaano ako sa kanila, ‘Yes, Ma’am Nati!’ sila agad.” A Keeper of Wisdom Admin by position, a teacher by nature. Dean Nati never forgets to impart valuable lessons to her dear students.
Students are either bound to achievement or learning. Some students will be able to surpass the different challenges that life has to offer, for instance, board exams and qualifying exams. On the other hand, there are students with brave hearts who have yet to ace the exams while some are still confused about the path that they have chosen. In Dean Nati’s point of view, the presence of God is an important factor in our lives. According to her, if you let God meddle into your life, He shall put you in a place of contentment. “Marerealize rin nila kung ano ang gusto nila. Confused sila ngayon, but they will realize na kailangan na nilang mamili. At kung talagang teaching ang gusto nila, ipapaalam sayo ng Diyos iyan. Doon ka dadalhin ng Diyos. And when you did your best, you’ll have to let God work for you.” A Teacher by Heart The spirit of service and volunteerism will always be the core of every educator. As much as Dean Nati wanted to increase the population of the department, she always reminds her students to become fully aware of the track that they chose. Education is a profession unlike any other. Being a teacher is not even remotely about tormenting students. It is a take less profession and that includes the monetary aspect that they will receive. What made Dean Nati stayed in the academe for 25 -26 years is all because of her students. The greatest gift that a teacher could ever receive is the success of his/her students. From the last Ikit-Mikit’s celebration, Dean Nati’s eyes suddenly lit up when she saw her former students thriving in different aspects. “Ang gusto ko lang naman pagkagraduate, after five or ten years nilang maging successful, ‘yun bang babalik sila to connect with us again. They would share their experiences, talents, and skills kasi graduates sila ng SEd.” With satisfaction, Dean Nati is like a mother that takes pride in her students because they are the proud products of this department. The education sector is not all about the knowledge that a teacher has to pass on. Educators has to have a heart for his/her learners. Dean Nati treats her students with extensive care and guidance. her, students are not just some mere customers that avail learning and teaching services from the teachers but instead, learners in need of assistance, love, and care. Why does our dean ALMA matter? Because behind all of the success of the department, there’s always a loving inay that openly welcomes her family. A mother that does not only manages our department, but also has become an exemplary mentor who touched our lives. Beyond all of the triumphs and achievement garnered by SEd, all of this won’t be possible without the backbone of the department. Dean Nati’s name was deeply attached to the department to the point that it would never be the same if she’s not there. Besides, what would be the essence of the SEd family without its ultimate mother figure?

he mythical creature that tends to appear on different fairytale stories back in the past centuries, a Troll. In this day and age, this term is used to describe a person causing a disturbance in the virtual world. We are now in a world wherein information is at our fingertips. Countless number of articles and facts are floating around the internet. With a hefty amount of money in his pocket, a man takes this opportunity and confined himself in a room together with his laptop. His hands are frantically making its way to worship and beautify the image of one of the most controversial Filipino President, Rodrigo Roa Duterte. This man who cleans up and wipes the blood coming from the hands of Duterte with aggressive and enticing words. He might as well be a part of Duterte’s “keyboard army.” Traces of these people start to make appearance during the 2016 presidential election in the Philippines. Oxford University published a study unraveling one of the strategies of Duterte during the 2016 elections: hiring trolls. According to the study entitled “Troops, Trolls, and Troublemakers: A Global Inventory of Organized Social Media Manipulation,” P10 million worth of cash was used to lure about 400 to 500 individuals to do their job in promoting Duterte online to target a much larger number of the demographics. Even after the election, these people spent hours doing their job, which was to “protect” the President at any cost. Seems harmless, right? However, the way they do their job is foul. While others tend to not give a second thought for their own privacy in social media, these trolls managed to conceal their identity and work privately with their online masks. They’d make tons of accounts to protect their anonymity from the social wildfires that they create. Trolling is fun especially while being paid. According to an actual online troll interviewed by GMA Network, they receive an amount of 30,000 – 70,000

“homemade” articles which utterly support Duterte’s plans and blur out their other perspective. Sad to say, this act entices the attention of the mass that would fall for it, hook line, and sinker. Internet has become their vast playground. Hoodlums like these are slowly penetrating the platform of communication and information, turning it into a massive internet war. They have allowed themselves to blindingly hold their guns and point it to the mass. Up until now even though the election happened years ago, the influence of these people is still lingering around the social media and continues to increase in number. Numerous accounts whether fake or not, are still making casualties just by sharing false information, roaming and targeting different personalities that oppose their leader. Sadly enough, the Philippines made its way among the top 30 countries in the world that deploy some form of “manipulation to distort online information.” It means that people are either tampering or altering information in order to win the favor of a particular public.
In the recent days, there are still a huge number of “accounts” who continues to protect the image of the President. In the midst of COVID-19 pandemic, trolls are still glorifying the anti-human and anti -poor management of this administration. Needless to say, this created another round of online wars in Facebook and Twitter. On April 10, 2020, Twitter took control on this uncontrolled fighting and suspended accounts that defended Duterte’s pandemic response. As you scroll down on your social media accounts, there is a high probability of you bumping on one of these keyboard army members. It might be the people walking by or the cars that are parked, who knows. Just like how the world revolves around the sun, everything changes. Considering how modern our world is right now, nothing really stays the same. We always need to accept new things and change our ways, especially in the field of teaching and education. Learning is one of the essential skills that a person possesses in order to understand the things around him. It is a continuous process that helps build one’s character and apply knowledge in everyday life. This is what Alan Blinder, an economist at Princeton University pointed out. He said that there should be a great focus on the type of education students should receive rather than the quantity they receive in order to easily adapt to new information which can be made possible if we change the way we teach.
In the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there are new presented exciting possibilities and solutions to enhance learning such as the existence of artificial knowledge, automation, intelligent robots, etc. This age pushes us to go outside of the box and challenge the traditional way of teaching which led to the creation of technological education through using online platforms and resources. It challenges us to improve our way to deliver information to the students because if we don’t, there might come a time that robots and machine would become better teachers than humans. That’s why many schools and universities already took advantage of these technological innovations. Instead of competing against these machines, teachers used them to improve their way of teaching such as giving tasks that requires the use of
Information and Communications Technology. They used these to equip their students with 21st century set of skills. With the use of technology, surely, the quality of education will supplement the new learning needs of this generation to survive in this modern world. We are already in the 21st century. Our education system is currently dealing with a generation that was born with the presence of technology. Everything is different from yesterday. We need to adapt and adjust with what we have right now, considering the new things and technological advancements that arose. We should improve our ways and ensure that it is different from what the internet or machines can tell us. We
should use technology to teach the children the things that a machine couldn’t teach. Just like what the Jack Ma said, “If we do not change the way we teach, 30 years later, we’ll be in trouble.”

Kailangan nating makita ang kunot sa noo ng mga makakarinig sa ating sagot sa recitation para mas pagisipan natin kung tama ba o hindi ang ating inihayag na pananaw. Kailangan natin ng panaka-nakang ngiti mula sa katabi natin sa klase para alalahaning masarap pa rin palang mabuhay sa kabila ng lahat ng masalimuot na nangyayari. Masasabi nating inaabuso ng gobyerno ang kanyang kapangyarihan mula nang tapakan nila ang press freedom dito sa ating bansa dahil sa mga aksyong ginawa nito laban sa ABS-CBN. Sa ginawang ito ng ating gobyerno, hindi lamang ang trabaho’t buhay ng 11,000 empleyado ng ABS-CBN ang nasa alanganin, kundi ang buong sambayanang Pilipino. Pilit mang pinagtatakpan ng kung anu-anong isyu o bagay ang tunay na hangarin nito sa pagpapasara ng istasyon, hindi maikakaila na kwestyonable ang kanilang mga naging hakbang hindi lamang ukol sa mga isyung ito, kundi na rin sa buong pagtugon nito sa mga problemang kinahaharap ng bansa. Sa panahong ito, tila hindi ang virus ang nais patayin ni Duterte, kundi ang ating kalayaan dahil ang pagpapatahimik sa midya ay para na ring pagpapatahimik sa boses ng masa.
