A Look at Fashion Week & It's Impact on Couture Theresa Kellington
Introduction A longstanding member of the fashion world knows to look for the start of each fashion week in three ways: when fashion shows start to be clustered in a season, when the name fashion week is applied as the description for these events, and when an organization steps in to begin to organize all or some of the shows. These clustered, organized events become Fashion Week.
Paris Couture Shows
Paris's couture shows began in 1945, but the first fetes that featured a designer displaying his clothing on models were in 1858.
New York City Fashion Shows
In 1903, America's first show for fashion was put on by the Ehrich Brothers in a shop in New York City.
THE FIRST CALENDAR FOR FASHION
In 1944, Ruth Finley launched the first calendar for fashion, compiling all of Press Week's events into a single guide.
THE ORIGIN OF FASHION WEEK
The idea of Fashion Week took root firmly in the United States and grew there. The importance of fashion design shared that root system. Both were revolutionized in the industry by Eleanor Lambert and her first Press Week in 1943.
FASHION IN THE 1960s.
Eleanor Lambert formed the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1962, and this elevated fashion into a recognized branch of art and culture in America. As the 1960s continued, the shows became those highly produced affairs with which we are familiar, taking place in Fashion Weeks twice a year.
MERCEDES -BENZ FASHION WEEK
Today, the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week continues to be among the most important weeks within the year for members of the fashion industry. It ranks highly among those who are simply obsessed with fashion.
With the increase of technology and accessibility, anyone can observe live streams of shows and gain access to the action backstage with a scroll through feeds on social media. These shows illustrate what is “in for each season, which is based off the trends created by fashion designers and editors.
