The 1970s Are Back: A Spring Fashion Trend Theresa Kellington
Introduction In one of my previous blogs, I reported that the 1990s fashions were back. They still are, but the trend is joined with another one — the 1970s. I know you are cringing, but the way designers are modernizing pieces of this time period will have you changing your mind. The 1970s was a time of hippies, disco, and Studio 54. The social movements and music influenced the style of clothing, and much hasn’t changed. Yet, there are certain pieces that are resurfacing. Let’s take a look at them.
Big Collars Remember the huge collars on jackets and leisure suits? They’re back! Yet, they aren’t as over the top. Designers like Paco Rabanne and Salvatore Ferragamo are coming out with bold collars in size and color. The points on the collars are sharp, giving a contrast look to the blazer underneath.
In the 1970s, we saw a lot of crochet vests in colorful, simple patterns. This spring, we will see crochet midi dresses, shirts, evening wear, cardigans and suits in rich colors and modern designs. While you can buy crochet pieces from designers, you can crochet your own clothes. Crochet is a sustainable fashion because it takes time to make the pieces. It is not like the other pieces on your closet that are made of materials that will take years to decompose in a landfill. When you take the time to make them, you will want to hold on to them longer.

Midi Skirts Although these skirts have popped up from time to time, they are here to stay this spring. It seems the 70s was about comfort and I couldn’t agree more. The length is perfect for spring boots. Pair it with a cardigan too!
Slinky Dresses These are different than the slip dresses that were popular in the 1990s. They are also called “naked dresses because they feel like a second skin. Slinky dresses are long and very feminine, with just the right amount of lace or ruffles.
Wrap Dresses The wrap dress was designed by Diane Von Furstenberg in 1974. This piece has also popped in and out of fashion, but it is a fashion staple. Its simple design makes it very easy to wear and it can be paired with a pair of heels or sneakers. Jumbo prints are also back and perfect on the wrap dress.
