WHY WE LOVE STILETTOS Theresa Kellington

Introduction Depending on who is asked, some people love stilettos while others not so much. The world’s infatuation with stilettos is one that has yet to waiver; even when walking in them is nearly impossible. Whether they are worn in the boardroom or bedroom, stilettos are always in fashion. But when it comes to the world’s obsession with them, being in fashion is only the tip of the iceberg.

But this beloved shoe didn’t earn celebrity status overnight. Stilettos had a long way to go and through many changes to become the iconic statement piece it is today.

History of the Stiletto Long before Louboutin or Manolo Blahnik, stilettos, although made quite differently, made their first appearance way back when Cleopatra sat on the throne. Even King Louis XIV was known to own a pair of red heels that be wore during his time as king.

But the history of stilettos doesn't stop there. The evolution of stilettos is one that still mystifies and captivates. In the 1950s, French designer Roger Vivier redesigned the famous heel to what it is today. And in the 1990s, stilettos were higher and funkier.

The Attraction Factor Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but when it comes to shoes, stilettos give females the upper hand. For some reason, the opposite sex finds women in super high heels more alluring, mysterious and attractive. That's not to say that women who don't wear heels aren’t beautiful. However, the way women walk when they're rocking a pair of stilettos turns heads.

Femininity at its Finest When females walk in stilettos, it oftentimes forces the hips out, almost creating an exaggerated version of how models strut on the catwalk. This slinky, everso-sultry gait not only turns heads, but accentuates femininity as well. Granted, a super confident woman rocking a pair of Converse sneakers can have the same effect.

Psychologically Speaking From a psychological standpoint, wearing stilettos makes women feel more powerful. They feel as if they can take on the world, regardless of what type of job they have. And when confidence is high, it shows in all facets of life.

While women's shoes comes in many shapes, sizes and colors, one thing will always remain the same: The world's ongoing love affair with stilettos may never truly understood, and that's okay too.
