TABLE OF CONTENTS

Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in our country, as demonstrated by the report of the Centers for Disease Control, which indicates approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese. HEPD wants to help! At HEPD, we’re taking this epidemic seriously by addressing the ways that we can help parents and their children in our community. We’ve assembled a task force of managers and staff to educate and assist our community to improve health and lead healthier lifestyles. The program, called HEALTH

(Helping Everyone Achieve a Lifestyle That’s Healthy), will be multi-faceted and on-going. We have developed a publication, for parents HEALTHeKids that promotes health and wellness in children; particularly those facing weight control issues. Other initiatives may include speakers at mandatory pre-season parent meetings for youth sports. The park district will work with sponsor Alexian Brothers to provide information about ways to keep kids at a healthy weight. Our staff Registered Dietician, Amy Daum, will be very involved as well, providing fitness and nutrition tips.

Spring 2013 PARK BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Happy New Year from your friends at the Hoffman Estates Park District. The new year is a great time to resolve to make steps toward a healthier lifestyle. How are your doing on your resolutions? Each of us, regardless of our current state of health and wellness, can take steps toward healthier habits. Whether it’s increasing activity, losing excess pounds, or getting more vegetables or calcium in our diets, at HEPD, we are continually offering opportunities for people of all ages to take steps toward healthy living. It’s part of our HEALTH initiative, which stands for Helping Everyone Achieve A Lifestyle That’s Healthy. Going forward, we’ll be introducing more classes and events that focus on healthy lifestyles as our part of our effort to help reduce the epidemic of obesity in our country. The classes and events we’ll plan can benefit everyone in our community. Here are just a few of the classes that can help you reach your health goals:

The governing body of the park district is comprised of seven elected commissioners who represent the recreational needs of their community for four year, unpaid terms. Park commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change park district policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. Park commissioners work as a board to interpret the park and recreation needs of the community, formulate short and long term plans and inform the public of the purpose, worth and extent of the district’s services, parks and facilities.

For Kids — Swimming – Lessons and passes at Seascape Family Aquatic Center are both a great investment for fun and fitness. (Pg. 15) HEALTHeKids Fair – March 2 at Triphahn Center – Parents and children can learn about the programs and services available to encourage healthy lifestyles. (Pg. 4)

Yoga can promote healing in your body as your stress level is reduced and you learn to interact differently with everyday stresses. It can also decrease your blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate while giving you a renewed sense of energy and focus. Grocery Store Tip To avoid impulse purchases and over spending at the grocery store, use the hand basket instead of the grocery cart when you’re heading to the store to pick up a few things. This way, when the basket gets too heavy, you’ll head to the check out and be less likely to buy impulsively.

Physical education encourages children to live active lifestyles and helps them build healthy habits that they will carry with them into adulthood. Physical activity is a great way to help children burn off their seemingly endless supply of energy. This is especially important for kinesthetic learners who need to move in order to learn. Our program focuses on helping children develop strong muscles, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility along with teamwork and self-confidence. The Skinny on Whole Grains Eating a variety of whole grains daily, like whole wheat bread and brown rice, may help you maintain a healthy weight and reduce your risk for heart disease. One way to find a product rich in whole grains is to make sure a whole grain is the first grain listed on a product ingredient list. For kids, the Center for Disease Control suggests parents set a good example by eating whole grains with meals or as snacks. Let children select and help prepare a whole grain side dish. Teach older children to read the ingredient list on cereals or snack food packages and choose those with whole grains at the top of the list. To learn more about whole grains and what constitutes a serving size, visit choosemyplate.gov -- Amy Daum, Registered Dietitian, PSS&WC

We believe that children learn best when parents and teachers work together and support each other, therefore, we encourage the active involvement of parents.

Fruity Granola Yogurt Parfait

Did you know? Commercially available granola is often toasted with oil and honey, making it high in calories. So, it’s important to choose low-fat granola, when available.

ADULTS:

½ cup granola, low-fat

Layer ingredients any which way you want in a glass, such as half of granola, yogurt, and fruit, then repeat. Eat with a long spoon.

½ cup fresh blueberries, raspberries, or sliced strawberries or bananas (use frozen fruit if fresh isn’t available)

Most Americans do not consume enough calcium, a mineral that is essential to bone health. For a quick and easy tip to increase your daily calcium intake, remember to include an eight ounce glass of skim milk or low-fat soy milk at meals. Choose low fat or fat free dairy for maximum calcium and minimal calories.

Try this delicious recipe:

* Fee listed is for the entire year.

¾ cup (6-oz container) vanilla or plain yogurt, low-fat

Are you getting enough calcium?

Measure out all ingredients to be used. Provide stemware or clear drinking glass or bowl.

After spring break, the child will attend class without the parent/caregiver. Losing Weight Safely Experts agree that it’s safe and healthy to lose about 1-2 pounds per week. You can do this by reducing the amount of calories you eat by 500 calories per day. For hidden calories, watch what you drink. Those convenient bottles of soda, juice and tea may contain more calories than you think. Read the labels and pay attention to the number of servings and the calories.

This two day a week program is to get the new skater familiarized with getting up and down on skates. Learning to work edges by marching, gliding etc. up to the beginning of striding for skating. Much time is given to doing drills that encourage free movement and motion that teaches skills while children are having fun and are unaware they are actually learning. Bike helmet and ski gloves (or similar) required. This is a skating only class. Plastic sticks may be introduced at the end of the session. No class May 10, 11, 12. Mgr. Jordan M,F 5:30P-6:20P

The Hockey Development Program encompasses three categories designed to take the new player from learning to stand up on skates to, over time, being able to play on a competitive team. We offer two days a week for a very competitive price believing that skating is one of the most difficult sport exercises to learn and master and needs frequent practice to really begin to enjoy and progress. However if you have to miss a day, no problem! The Curriculum is designed to enable students to progress at their own speed. It is always recommended to have a child try a public skate first to ensure they are ready to focus on the process of learning to skate. Contact Randy Jordan, Assistant GM/Hockey Director, for more information on these excellent classes at 847–285–5501 or rjordan@heparks.org.

Transfers from one class to another, when space permits, can be made in person at Triphahn Center, Willow or PSS&WC by completing and signing our transfer form.

Anti-Bullying Policy

HEPD cares for the health and well-being of our community and our participants, and will not tolerate bullying or harassment of any kind. The Board of Commissioners has approved a comprehensive Anti-Bullying Policy to address bullying or harassment, and all forms of aggressive and violent behaviors that interfere with a participant’s ability to learn or limits involvement. All administrators, staff, parents, volunteers, and participants are expected to refuse to tolerate bullying and harassment and to demonstrate behavior that is respectful and civil. “Bullying” or “harassment” is defined as any gesture or written, verbal, graphic, or physical act (including cyber bullying via the internet, cell phone, personal digital assistant, etc.) that is dehumanizing, intimidating, hostile, humiliating, threatening, or otherwise likely to evoke fear of physical harm or emotional distress. This also includes forms of retaliation against individuals who report or cooperate in an investigation under this policy. Consequences may include, but are not limited to temporary removal from the program, loss of privileges or program suspension. Annual training will be implemented for all employees and volunteers on district policies and procedures to provide a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities and the skills to fulfill them. Visit heparks.org to view the complete Anti-Bullying Policy.

It is in the best interest of our whole community to encourage a healthy lifestyle for all. The Friends of HE Parks Foundation is a dedicated group of community volunteers who raise money so that more residents can participate in and enjoy recreational opportunities, regardless of their social, physical or economic circumstances and limitations. Financial struggle comes with great stress that can take its toll on the mental and physical health of an individual and his or her family. Numerous studies have shown that physical activity and recreation are imperative to relieving stress and maintaining health. It is the mission of the park district to promote the health and wellbeing of the residents in our district through our facilities and programs. The Foundation strives to promote events that will raise money to help disadvantaged families of our community be able to enjoy park district programs and facilities. One way you can help is by attending one of our fun events throughout the year. For information on how you can help, contact Peg Kusmierski at pkusmierski@heparks.org.
