Letter from the President

Mission Statement The mission of the Hoffman Estates Park District is to enhance the quality of life of our residents and guests by providing first class parks, facilities, programs, and services through environmentally and fiscally responsible management practices.

2009 is shaping up to be a great year at the Hoffman Estates Park District. We have many exciting programs, initiatives and events planned to make this year even better than last! We’d like to thank everyone who participated in our community-wide survey — your feedback is guiding us in the right direction to continually provide first class parks, facilities, programs and services.

Our Customer Service Pledge

The district is expanding our state-licensed and nationally accredited preschool program by opening a new full-day preschool child care center at the Community Center & Ice Arena! More information on this exciting new opportunity can be found on page 21. And even though there is still snow on the ground, it’s not too early to start dreaming about the summer. You can purchase your season pass to Seascape Family Aquatic Center now and receive an early bird discount! And check out our summer planner — it’s filled with information on our summer camps and programs — everything you need to plan your summer of fun! This is just a snapshot of the great things to come in 2009. Don’t forget to visit us online at www.heparks.org or better yet, send us an email address and start receiving bi-monthly updates on upcoming programs and events so you don’t miss a thing!

Our satisfaction guarantee is our promise to provide quality parks, facilities, recreation programs, and leisure services that meet the expectation of our customers. If you are not satisfied with any recreational program the Hoffman Estates Park District provides due to the quality of instruction, the child’s inability to adapt emotionally to the class, or the inappropriate skill level for the registered participant, a full refund will be processed. To determine that a class does not meet their satisfaction, participants must attend the first two class sessions, but request a refund and fill out all appropriate paperwork before the third class meeting. Refund request forms are available at the HEPD Community Center and Ice Arena, Willow Recreation Center, and Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center. No processing fee will apply to refunds issued under the satisfaction guarantee policy. If you are not satisfied, we would appreciate your comments, suggestions, or ideas for improvement. Please look for our customer comment cards at all district facilities. We appreciate hearing your positive comments, as well as your suggestions for improvement.

Our Community Commitment The Hoffman Estates Park District remains committed to providing the best recreation and leisure services to our community. With our "satisfaction guaranteed" pledge, residents and their guests can be assured that the Hoffman Estates Park District staff will work to not only meet expectations but surpass them.

The governing body of the park district is comprised of seven elected commissioners who represent the recreational needs of their community for four- year, unpaid terms. Park commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change park district policies, sign agreements, award contracts, and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. Park commissioners work as a board to interpret the park and recreation needs of the community, formulate short and long term plans, and inform the public of the purpose, worth, and extent of the district’s services, parks, and facilities. Regular Board Meetings are held monthly at 7:00P at CCIA Building and Grounds Committee Recreation Committee Administration and Finance Full Board Meeting

You won't find a more complete program that addresses the needs of swimmers at all ages and levels, from beginners to advanced. Whether you're looking for an aquatics program for yourself or your family, we have a course that meets your needs. American Red Cross CPR The American Red Cross CPR program is recognized nationwide for training individuals to apply critical lifesaving skills in the event of a cardiac emergency. Statistics show that more than 200,000 Americans die of sudden cardiac arrest every year. Up to 50,000 of these deaths could be prevented if someone had initiated the cardiac chain of survival and an automated external defibrillator (AED) had been available for immediate use at the time of the emergency. Participants in this class will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency, learn three emergency action steps needed before applying CPR, how to recognize life threatening conditions and what to do, how to recognize and treat someone who is experiencing a cardiac emergency, how to use an AED and much more. Please contact the American Red Cross for more information and registration. CCIA CPR / AED — Adult

The Hoffman Estates Ice Arena is a premiere regional ice facility located at the south end of the Community Center & Ice Arena, located at 1685 West Higgins Road. This recently renovated arena offers two NHL sized sheets of ice, which are used for freestyle, figure, and hockey skaters, as well as serving as the practice facility for the Chicago Wolves. Fundamentals of Figure Skating Academy The program is a developmental program from Tot Level through Freestyle 10 classes. Students build a basic skating vocabulary, and learn the fundamentals of skating, from maneuvers and body positions to preparing for freestyle level jumps and spins. Developmental Hockey Program Some of Illinois’ finest and most knowledgeable coaches teach eager newcomers basic skating skills, as well as the rules and terminology of hockey. By incorporating the unique and very successful SUMO system, these coaches teach players the correct components of proper hockey skating from the outset, then teach them how to apply these sound techniques to the other four hockey skills — stick handling, shooting, passing, and safe checking. Sled Hockey for the Disabled Do you or someone you know have a physical disability or learning challenge? Try Sled Hockey which meets on Sunday nights from 5:50P–7:00P For registration information, contact NWSRA at 847–392–2848.

Hockey provides great cross training for other sports in their off seasons. Hockey is safer than almost all other youth sports.

Hoffman Ice is the only hockey program to incorporate the SUMO system of training, developed by AHAI 2007 Coach of the Year, Randy Jordan. We do not tolerate fighting in hockey.

The Hoffman Ice program offers loaner equipment and grants to help ensure that all kids can try and enjoy the sport.

Preschool 2009–2010 Children Learn through Experience, Imitation and Play Our curriculum focuses on hands on activities and experimentation. Activities such as music, movement, dramatic play, science, and open ended art projects help cultivate children’s imaginations and give them confidence to express themselves. Group activities encourage socialization and teach important lessons in sharing and being part of a community. Daily outdoor or gym time helps children develop their large motor skills. Fine motor skills are developed through tabletop activities like puzzles cutting and painting, which also fosters the imagination and cognitive development. In addition, each classroom boasts a computer and digital camera, allowing teachers to integrate technology into the curriculum. Our teachers combine our diverse curriculum with a nurturing environment and a healthy balance of playtime to encourage student’s physical, emotional, and social and creative development. And through encouragement, understanding and respect, they help provide a positive atmosphere for learning. Our program is state licensed and nationally accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, so you can be confident that your child will benefit from superior educators, classroom equipment, and opportunities to help build a solid foundation for his or her future.

Threeschool This is a program we designed just for children who missed the traditional September 1 preschool deadline. Taught by a preschool teacher in a preschool classroom setting, this class engages children through a variety of activities such as songs, stories, free play at learning centers, crafts, outside fun and gym time. Pull ups are okay to begin with, but children should be on their way to taking care of their own toileting needs. Teachers will not be responsible for changing pull ups. Children should bring a light snack each day. 15 minutes will be added to the length of class beginning in January 2010 to prepare the students for a longer preschool day. Class meets the entire school year. Children turning 3 during the school year may register within three months of turning 3 years old while space is available; fees will be prorated.

Friends of HE Parks Foundation The Friends of HE Parks Foundation is made up of community volunteers who work together to raise money so that more residents can participate and enjoy recreational and leisure opportunities, regardless of social, physical or economic circumstances and limitations. Since its creation in 2002, the Foundation through its scholarship fund, has donated tens of thousands of dollars to benefit hundreds of local youth and their families, enabling them to play sports, dance, skate and swim in programs they once could not afford. Recently, the Foundation purchased a jumbo movie screen and donated it to the park district to enable the free movie nights presented for all members of our community. The Foundation strives to promote events that will raise money to help disadvantaged families of our community be able to enjoy park district programs and facilities.

When registering, the parent of an individual with a disability should inform the park district if special accommodation is needed so that the individual can successfully participate in the program. The park district staff will then contact NWSRA for assistance with the accommodation.

Thanks! Thank you to each of our sponsors!

A special thanks to all of our 2008 volunteers! The Park Board of Commissioners, Foundation Board of Trustees, and the Hoffman Estates Park District staff would like to thank you for your volunteer efforts in our Athletics Division, our Foundation Fundraising Events, the Vogelei CARES project, throughout our parks system, and in our 50+ program. And thanks to all of our volunteers who will be returning in 2009 to once again help us promote, fund and run our programs and activities. We look forward to working with you in the coming year. Your willingness to give back to your community helps to make Hoffman Estates a better place to live!

John Otto 2008 Volunteer of the Year John Otto has been chosen from all of our 2008 Best of Hoffman recipients to be named the 2008 Hoffman Estates Park District Volunteer of the Year. Over the years, John has been an outstanding volunteer coach for the Hoffman Estates Park District. He has given much of his time to help coach baseball, basketball, softball and soccer. He exemplifies exactly what it is to be a coach. His commitment and desire to help the youth of the Hoffman Estates Park District is second to none. John is a cornerstone of our Athletics Programs of which we will always be thankful.

Plant a Memorial Tree The Hoffman Estates Park District’s living tree memorial program offers residents a unique way to honor and remember a loved one. A memorial tree is also the perfect way to commemorate one of life’s milestones, from weddings and anniversaries to the birth of a child. A one-time donation of $300 lets you place the tree of your choice in a park that is special to you. Memorial tree forms are available at the Community Center & Ice Arena. For more information, or to have a memorial tree form mailed to you, visit our website at www.heparks.org or call John Giacalone at 847–285–5465.
