We can’t wait to get outside and clean up the remnants of winter, take the dog for longer walks, or just enjoy the simple pleasure of breathing in fresh air! Here at the

Our Customer Service Pledge Our satisfaction guarantee is our promise to provide quality parks, facilities, recreation programs, and leisure services that meet the expectation of our customers. If you are not satisfied with any recreational program the Hoffman Estates Park District provides due to the quality of instruction, the child’s inability to adapt emotionally to the class, or the inappropriate skill level for the registered participant, a full refund will be processed. To determine that a class does not meet their satisfaction, participants must attend the first two class sessions, but request a refund and fill out all appropriate paperwork before the third class meeting. Refund request forms are available at the HEPD Community Center and Ice Arena, Willow Recreation Center, and Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center. The governing body of the park district is comprised of seven elected commissioners who represent the recreational needs of their community for four- year, unpaid terms. Park commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change park district policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. Park commissioners work as a board to interpret the park and recreation needs of the community, formulate short and long term plans, and inform the public of the purpose, worth and extent of the district’s services, parks, and facilities.

New! Black Bear Park Park Dedication May 1, 2010

Black Bear Park

Disc Golf Course Open for Play

The 28.67 acre Black Bear Park, located at 1784 Essex Drive just south of Shoe Factory Road was recently completed, supported in part by a $325,000 OSLAD grant. The park is located within a natural, diverse area with open water and natural wetlands and offers recreational opportunities while still maintaining the natural features through ecological stewardship, preservation and environmental education opportunities for all. Park amenities include two separate playgrounds, an open air shelter, multiuse paths and walkways, resistant exercise equipment, a nature trail, fishing dock and Hoffman Estates’ first ever disc golf course.

At a time when fewer and fewer people are finding themselves in the fresh, open air of the outdoors, the Hoffman Estates Park District wanted to provide an activity for people of all ages and skill levels that would bring them outside and in touch with the nature that surrounds us. Originating in the 1960s, disc golf has seen a large increase in popularity since the mid 1990s. A few avid disc golf players at the Park District were looking for a spot in Hoffman Estates that could help feed their obsession with the game. With its varied topography, open forests, and expansive wetland, Black Bear Park provides for a unique disc golf experience unlike any other in the Chicagoland area. This challenging 18-hole course is now open for play. The course allows participants the ability to experience the parks natural features in a challenging and fun way. Some of the holes were intentionally designed to play across and/or through the wet areas of the park, while other holes play through a 100+ year old hardwood wood lot. Whether you’re an experienced disc golf enthusiast or just a beginner, the course at Black Bear Park was designed to challenge everyone’s disc throwing skills.

If you already play hockey, this program will give you extra ice time to work on your skills. We offer the most affordable program in the state of IL and maybe in the country. If you find a better deal than this at any other rink we will match the price. With this program, you get to skate every Tuesday and Friday night from 4:30P–5:30P and again on Saturday afternoon from 3:30P–4:30P. With so much ice time, you don’t have to worry about missing a session. We utilize the proven "SUMO" system of training and sectional training matches players of all ages, experience levels and gender together at the first session. Learn from caring professionals that know how to train new players in a way that is fun and not intimidating. If you don’t have equipment, you can use ours for free — simply return it when you are done. We encourage everyone to come early to the first class as we will need some time to get players equipped. Contact Randy Jordan, Hockey Director for more information on this amazing program at 847–285–5501 or rjordan@heparks.org. We anticipate the response to be overwhelming so register early as we only have so much equipment to go around. 222469–A TU F TU Sunday Games

Preschool 2010–2011 The Hoffman Estates Park District preschool program believes that the children learn through experience, imitation and play. Our curriculum focuses on hands on activities and experimentation. Activities such as music, movement, dramatic play, science and open ended art projects help cultivate children’s imaginations and give them confidence to express themselves, while group activities encourage socialization and teach important lessons in sharing and being part of a community. Outdoor or gym time is scheduled daily to help children develop large motor skills. Table top activities like puzzles, cutting and painting help youngsters develop their fine motor skills, while also fostering imagination and cognitive development. Plus, each classroom boasts a computer and digital camera, allowing teachers to integrate technology into the curriculum. Our teachers combine our diverse curriculum with a nurturing environment and a healthy balance of playtime to encourage students’ physical, emotional, social and creative development. And through encouragement, understanding and respect, they help provide a positive atmosphere for learning. Our program is state licensed and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, so you can be confident that your child will benefit from superior educators, classroom equipment and opportunities to help build a solid foundation for the future.

Kindercise / 3–6 years / CCIA

This active class will introduce your preschool star to a variety of different sports, including soccer, basketball, tennis, t-ball and more. Kids will be encouraged to listen, follow directions and work as a team.

Each class follows a weekly theme, providing preschool aged children with a fun and imaginative approach to fitness. We combine singing, dancing, games and tumbling as we lead a series of exercise routines that help keep children physically fit. We also provide a weekly overview letter for the children to take home and share with their parents. This enables parents to keep the fun and excitement of fitness alive long after their children have completed each weekly Kindercise session.

Friends of HE Parks Foundation

Northwest Special Recreation Association

The Friends of HE Parks Foundation is made up of community volunteers who work together to raise money so that more residents can participate and enjoy recreational opportunities, regardless of social, physical or economic circumstances and limitations. Since its creation in 1998, the Foundation through its scholarship fund, has donated tens of thousands of dollars to benefit hundreds of local youth and their families, enabling them to play sports, dance, skate and swim in programs they once could not afford.

Providing Recreation Services to Individuals with Special Needs The Hoffman Estates Park District is a member of a cooperative agreement among 16 park districts which form the Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA). NWSRA exists to provide outstanding opportunities through recreation for people with disabilities. The agency’s team of full time Therapeutic Recreation professionals and trained part time staff offer safe, fun and quality year round opportunities to individuals with disabilities of all ages and ability levels.

The Foundation strives to promote events that will raise money to help disadvantaged families of our community be able to enjoy park district programs and facilities. In 2007 the Foundation purchased a jumbo movie screen and donated it to the park district to enable the free movie nights presented for all members of our community. Make sure you mark your calendar for our annual Casino Night on February 27, 2010 at Poplar Creek Country Club from 7:00P–11:00P and our golf outing on July 20. Remember, not only do you get to have fun while raising money for this worthwhile charity; your contributions are tax deductible.

Unemployment Support Package The new Unemployment Support Package offered by the Park District is designed to provide fitness and recreation options at no or low cost to residents, renewable every 30 days. The program is open to Hoffman Estates Park District residents with valid identification and proof of employment termination. Unemployment verification is required in the form of a check stub, unemployment debit card or "approval of benefits" letter from the Illinois Department of Employment. Applications for the program are available at CCIA, 1685 West Higgins Road or WRC, 3600 Lexington Drive. Packets are renewable every 30 days with updated unemployment verification. Unemployment package includes:

Participants benefit through increased self esteem, physical and social skills development, and improved fitness and health while experiencing new challenges, making friends and having fun! After school, evening and weekend activities feature cooperative sports and games, individuals and team sports, arts and crafts, fitness, cooking, creative arts and drama. Camps, trips, and special events are also available at various times throughout the year. Inclusion assistance is provided by NWSRA to those individuals who wish to participate in their home park district program. When registering, the parent of an individual with a disability should inform the park district if special accommodation is needed so that the individual can successfully participate in the program. The park district staff will then contact NWSRA for assistance with the accommodation. For more information on NWSRA, brochures may be picked up at the park district main office or at the NWSRA office at Park Central, 3000 West Central Road in Rolling Meadows. NWSRA may be contacted at 847–392–2848 (voice), 392–2855 (TTY) or 392–2870 (fax) Check us out on the web at nwsra.org.

Opportunities For Leaders NWSRA is hiring leaders for positions of inclusion as well as NWSRA programs. If you have an interest in working with individuals with disabilities, contact NWSRA at 847–392–2848 to discuss the possibilities. The benefits are endless!
