Our Community Commitment The Hoffman Estates Park District remains committed to providing the best recreation and leisure services to our community. With our Satisfaction Guaranteed pledge, residents and their guests can be assured that the Hoffman Estates Park District staff will work to not only meet expectations, but to exceed them.

Our Mission Offer healthy and enjoyable experiences to residents and guests by providing first class parks, facilities, programs and services in an environmentally and fiscally responsible manner.

Our Vision By adhering to our values and achieving our goals, enrich the quality of life of all residents and our guests by providing healthy and enjoyable experiences in an environmentally and fiscally responsible manner.

The Hoffman Estates Park District is governed by seven elected commissioners, representing the recreational needs of the community for four year unpaid terms. Park Commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change Park District policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. The Park Board also hires an Executive Director to manage the day-to-day affairs of the Park District. The Executive Director hires professional staff to assist in managing operations. The Executive Director also works to keep the board of commissioners informed of the happenings within the Hoffman Estates Park District.

Contact our Board of Commissioners

To email a Commissioner, click on the name by their picture at heparks.org or you can call 847-781-3633.

Board Meetings

Board Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday each month at 7:00pm at Triphahn. Visit heparks.org to view our schedule, agendas and minutes.

Letter from the President

Welcome to Spring 2015! This edition of our Program Guide is always exciting because it marks the beginning of a new year and the upcoming milder weather. It represents many opportunities to find something new and exciting to enrich your life, add enjoyment and achieve your fitness goals. One exciting achievement we’re happy to announce is the completion of our Comprehensive Master Plan (CMP) 2014- 2019 that spells out the direction of the Park District for the next five years. This plan is the result of our Forward Planning Committee that has been working on for more than a year. It represents the input of many people who were instrumental in contributing their ideas and opinions including the Park District staff, Park Board of Commissioners and more than 880 residents and community leaders who participated in the Needs Assessment Community Survey, focus groups and interviews with stakeholders. To see the CMP, visit heparks.org. In Fall 2014, we completed construction of four digital marquee signs at Triphahn Center, Vogelei Park, Willow Recreation Center and Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club. In addition to promoting the Park District’s programs and events, the signs will promote Village events including events at the Sears Centre, and provide up-to-the-minute community emergency messages such as Amber Alerts, severe weather warnings, etc. Two of the signs will include some commercial advertising as a way to offset the cost of the new signs. We hope you find the signs to be a valuable community communication tool. Keep on track with your New Year Resolution today and join a Fitness Center or register for one of our many fitness classes. Our Fitness Centers include our state-of-the-art full service fitness center, Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center (prairiestonesports.com), plus we have two additional Fitness Centers at Triphahn Center and Willow Recreation Center. Or, consider hiring a Personal Trainer or Nutritionist.

Finally, we’ve made it easier for you to access all the options available to you by introducing a new website that has many features that are compatible with your favorite mobile device. With the new mobile website you can browse our program guide, find news and upcoming events, register online, find a park or facility, watch videos, check weather-related program updates, find contact information and book a tee time. Plus, you can get notifications on important weather-related program updates and reminders about events. Meanwhile, be sure to add these fun events to your calendar (see pages 4-6 for details): Minute To Win It, March 5, 6-9 PM at Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club – The 50+ version of the popular game show. This will allow the child to adjust to attending class without the parent/caregiver. Please note, when the parent/caregiver is not in the classroom, he/ she must remain in the building as the teacher is not responsible for changing diapers. Children must be 21 months old in order to enroll in this class. Children may begin anytime during the school year while space is available. **Participants in the 2's Playschool class will receive priority registration for next year's 2016-2017 preschool or threeschool.

Preschool

Our program is state licensed and nationally accredited by the National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), so you can be confident that your child will benefit from superior educators, classroom equipment and opportunities to help build a solid foundation for his or her future. Our curriculum focuses on hands on activities and experimentation. Activities such as music, movement, dramatic play, science and open ended art projects help cultivate children’s imaginations and give them confidence to express themselves. Group activities encourage socialization and teach important lessons in sharing and being part of a community. Daily outdoor or gym time helps children develop their large motor skills. Fine motor skills are developed through tabletop activities like puzzles cutting and painting, which also fosters imagination and cognitive development.

"My name is Colleen Moghadam, a member of Prairie Stone Sports and Wellness for three years and active participant in the programs offered by the park district. I am extremely happy with the outcome of the program 'Fit Together' offered by the Park District under the direction of Joe Bagnasco. This class in particular allows time for each parent/child participants to develop common fitness goals while experiencing the importance of group fitness and enjoy recreational time together. My family has reaped the benefits of programs offered by the Park District year round and I am always happy to see the variety of programs offered each season. The staff at PSS&WC is exceptional and the facility is great. The facility hours are reasonable and make for an excellent addition to any routine."

Private Lessons

Figure skating is a technical sport with many intricate moves and elements that can take several weeks or months to achieve. Coaches provide the critical instruction needed to achieve the proper technique and desired look of the element, instant feedback and critique and training needed to learn new elements. Skaters learning the basics in classes will receive group instruction and will learn the breakdown and beginning steps to how an element like forward skating should be performed. In group lessons the instructor’s goal is for skaters to be able to accomplish the elements learned with minimal mistakes. Private lessons allow the skater even more in depth critique and mastery of the element. You may contact Jennifer Dooley, Figure Skating Manager, at 847-781-3642, or via email jdooley@ heparks.org for a coach referral or information on private lessons. Once you choose a coach, they will walk you through the process of contract ice and times they are available to teach. Most lessons take place after school until 5:30pm or before school. Private lessons are performed at the rink during freestyle ice. Freestyle ice is provided during the day to all figure skaters. This is not public ice and skaters taking private lessons or practicing on the ice must adhere to the ice etiquette rules.

Freestyle Skate

This time is for advanced figure skaters and their coaches to practice. To reserve ice, contact the Service Desk at the Triphahn Center Ice Arena.

Nature

Thanks to a local Eagle Scout, Ben Rotkowski, who raised funds for all materials and built three 4’x8’ raised garden beds, HEPD is very eager to begin offering gardening classes at Vogelei Park. We are proud to provide the community with this new amenity and a variety of classes that will allow our residents to learn how to lead a healthier life. We are pleased to be partnering with the Hoffman Estates Garden Club to offer 8-12 instructional classes throughout the year. Please contact Nicole Chesak, Superintendent of Recreation, at nchesak@heparks.org if there is a special class you would like to offer. Learn the best ways to start your own seedlings in our one day workshop in March, then come back in April for a class led by our expert who will teach you how to maximize the space in a raised bed that can yield a hearty bounty of healthy foods for your family this Fall.

I started assisting with class at a young age and am now an assistant instructor. The Park District has been a staple in my life! I not only participate in the TaeKwon-Do program here, but I also participated in the pre-school program as a child, worked at Seascape for five summers, and attend special events on occasion hosted by the Park District."

HEPD SOCCER my game your game our game PreKinder Soccer Spring 2015

The purpose of this league is to teach pre-kindergarten soccer players the fundamentals of the game while having fun. Participants must be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2015. Participants will receive a t-shirt. Players must have shin guards, a #3 size soccer ball and water bottle with them to each practice and game. To keep program fees down, the park district relies heavily on volunteer support; any interested coaches should complete the bottom of this flyer and attach it to their child’s completed registration form. Boys & Girls going into Kindergarten fall 2015

Outdoor Soccer

The Hoffman Estates Park District Youth Soccer Program is a fall to spring season. This means that the teams are formed in the fall, stay together through winter and spring. If parents registered for the fall and spring season, they are not required to register with the park district for the spring season. For those players that registered for fall only, to continue in the spring season with their fall teams, they would be required to register for the spring only season. If you are new to the area or did not play in the fall, but would like to play spring soccer, then you will be required to go onto a wait list. The wait list is just a holding pattern to find out which teams will need players for the spring. Once the coaches provide the park district as to the number of players from their fall rosters are returning, it will determine how many spots are available on that team. It is for this reason that friendship requests and special requests are not taken for the spring season only siblings playing in the same division are guaranteed to be on the same team. Here’s our green mission: To adopt environmentally friendly business practices that benefit the environment, educate the community and improve district wide efficiencies. HEPD Cares About Your Child's HEALTH. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the United States over the last 30 years. It has contributed to an increase in chronic diseases like high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes, once only seen in adults. To address this serious issue, the HEALTH Program, a District wide childhood obesity initiative, provides the community with a variety of excellent tools and resources to combat this critical issue. HEALTH stands for “Helping Everyone Achieve A Lifestyle that’s Healthy” and represents our efforts to reduce the rate of childhood obesity in our community. Wherever you see the apple, you’ll find health tips and programs that encourage a healthy lifestyle for all. You can join HEPD in our fight against childhood obesity. One way is to purchase or renew a Park District Youth License Plate for your vehicle! With every license plate purchased or renewed, $25 is contributed to a grant fund to support programming for kids.

Email Communication

The Hoffman Estates Park District staff has made every effort to prepare our marketing material as accurately as possible, however, errors can occur. Circumstances may require that adjustments be made to programs, fees, schedules, ect. The Park District reserves the right to make any such adjustments. The Hoffman Estates Park District apologizes for any inconvenience these errors may cause.

At HEPD, we value the philosophy that our parks and recreation programs are for all people – regardless of the color of their skin, age, income level or ability. It’s important that all people have access to parks, programs and facilities that enrich their lives and add value to the community. Where you see this icon, you’ll see programs, organizations and efforts that demonstrate that value.

Natural Area Management Plan

Early in 2010, the HEPD Board of Commissioners formally adopted the district's first Natural Area Management Plan. We've changed the shorelines of our lakes by adding natural plant vegetation, called a natural shoreline. Natural shorelines, as opposed to rock borders or retaining wall shorelines, offer many benefits to the community. Natural shorelines add beauty to the landscape. They help reduce excessive growth of algae by protecting the water quality because they prevent the soil from eroding into the lake. Natural shorelines also keep litter from blowing into the lakes. The plants attract a great variety of wildlife such as birds, butterflies, frogs, turtles, and ducks which use the area for nesting, spawning and protection from predators. In addition, the vegetation deters nuisance species like Canadian geese which litter the lake and surrounding area with droppings. Further, by improving water quality and appearance, increasing wildlife habitat, a natural shoreline may even improve property values. For more information on the Park District’s green initiatives and natural area management, visit heparks.org. Natural Area Management in Action! See the beauty of our natural areas and read the full Natural Area Management Plan at heparks.org.

Sportsmanship Pledge

Our Recreation Department has adopted a special pledge in an effort to build confidence and sportsmanship in all our young athletes and to ensure a healthy enriching environment, the Hoffman Estates Park District has developed the “My Game, Your Game, Our Game” youth sportsmanship pledge to solidify our dedication to the health and well-being of our community. My game = I will try my hardest to excel at this sport. Your game = I will respect you as a teammate, opponent, parent, referee or coach. Our game = Together we will develop teamwork and sportsmanship.

Anti-Bullying Policy

HEPD cares for the health and well-being of our community and our participants and will not tolerate bullying or harassment of any kind. The Hoffman Estates Park District's Board of Commissioners has approved a comprehensive Anti-Bullying Policy to address bullying or harassment, and all forms of aggressive and violent behaviors. “We feel this is an important step to ensure the health and well-being of our community and our participants,” said Dean Bostrom, executive director for the HEPD. “We won’t tolerate bullying or harassment of any kind that might inhibit an individual’s ability to learn and participate.”“Bullying” or “harassment” is defined as any gesture or written, verbal, graphic, or physical act (including cyber bullying via the internet, cell phone, personal digital assistant) that is dehumanizing, intimidating, hostile, humiliating, threatening, or otherwise likely to evoke fear of physical harm or emotional distress. This also includes forms of retaliation against individuals who report or cooperate in an investigation under this policy. All employees and volunteers will be required to complete a training course each year and will be expected to refuse to tolerate bullying and harassment and to demonstrate behaviour that is respectful and civil. Visit heparks.org to read our Anti Bullying Policy.

Northwest Special Recreation Association

The Hoffman Estates Park District is proud to be a member of Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA). NWSRA’s team of full-time Therapeutic Recreation professionals and trained part-time staff offer a multitude of year-round program offerings including sports, camping, social programs and much more. Inclusion assistance is provided by NWSRA to those individuals who wish to participate in their home Park District program. When registering, the parent of an individual with a disability should inform the park district (and NWSRA, if desired) of any accommodation needed in order for the individual to successfully participate in the program. The Park District staff will then contact NWSRA for assistance with the accommodation.
