National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Parks & Recreation Management The Hoffman Estates Park District is the 2009 winner of the National Gold Medal Award, the highest national award that a parks and recreation agency can receive, given by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA), in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). With this honor, the Hoffman Estates Park District has demonstrated itself as the best parks and recreation agency in the country for a community with a population between 50,001 and 100,000. The most prestigious award of its kind, the Gold Medal Award honors communities throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition. The Park District was chosen based on its ability to effectively identify and address the needs of those it serves, and then its ability to implement, enhance, and improve its parks, programs, and facilities through efficient financial and volunteer resource management including the collective energies of volunteers, staff, and elected officials. Winners were announced live during NRPA’s Annual Congress & Exposition in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 14, 2009.

Mission Statement

It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is nearly upon us but the falling temperatures and colorful leaves surely remind us each morning! This year perhaps more than any in our lifetime we may need to try a little harder to be thankful and share the joy that the holidays traditionally bring. So let me challenge you to stop and think about the things in our daily lives that give us reason to be grateful. Our families — our biggest fans that show up at baseball and soccer games and cheer from the sidelines whether our team wins or loses. Our friends — who encourage us to play tennis, take a walk and share a home cooked meal. Our employers — who are struggling to keep expenses down and keep us employed. And finally, our Gold Medal Park District! I can’t think of any entity that supports family, health and community more consistently and reliably than our Park District and their team of hard working and professional staff who have dedicated their careers to providing opportunities for us to enrich our lives. From the park down the street and professionally managed and maintained sport complexes and facilities, to programs and special events for the young and the young at heart, they continually strive to find new and exciting opportunities to enhance our quality of life. We hope you find time this New Year to enjoy all of the parks, facilities, programs and services that our Park District has to offer. On behalf of the Park Board and staff, please enjoy a safe holiday season!

The mission of the Hoffman Estates Park District is to enhance the quality of life of our residents and guests by providing first class parks, facilities, programs, and services through environmentally and fiscally responsible management practices.

Our Customer Service Pledge Our satisfaction guarantee is our promise to provide quality parks, facilities, recreation programs, and leisure services that meet the expectation of our customers. If you are not satisfied with any recreational program the Hoffman Estates Park District provides due to the quality of instruction, the child’s inability to adapt emotionally to the class, or the inappropriate skill level for the registered participant, a full refund will be processed. To determine that a class does not meet their satisfaction, participants must attend the first two class sessions, but request a refund and fill out all appropriate paperwork before the third class meeting. Refund request forms are available at the HEPD Community Center and Ice Arena, Willow Recreation Center, and Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center. No processing fee will apply to refunds issued under the satisfaction guarantee policy. If you are not satisfied, we would appreciate your comments, suggestions, or ideas for improvement. Please look for our customer comment cards at all district facilities. We appreciate hearing your positive comments, as well as your suggestions for improvement.

Hockey Development Program / 5–16 years / CCIA The great game of hockey is a very invigorating sport and is also safer than most youth sports as there is no fighting. If you already play hockey, this program will give you extra ice time to work on your skills. And if you think you can’t afford to enroll your child in a hockey program, think again. We offer the most affordable program in the state of IL and maybe in the country. If you find a better deal than this at any other rink we will match the price. With this program, you get to skate every Tuesday and Friday night from 4:30P–5:30P and again on Saturday afternoon from 3:30P–4:30P. With so much ice time, you don’t have to worry about missing a session. We utilize the proven "SUMO" system of training and sectional training matches players of all ages, experience levels and gender together at the first session. Learn from caring professionals that know how to train new players in a way that is fun and not intimidating. If you don’t have equipment, you can use ours for free — simply return it when you are done. We encourage everyone to come early to the first class as we will need some time to get players equipped. Contact Randy Jordan, Hockey Director for more information on this amazing program at 847–285–5501 or rjordan@heparks.org. We anticipate the response to be overwhelming so register early as we only have so much equipment to go around.

Program Format and Philosphy

Three Year Old Preschool

The Hoffman Estates Park District preschool program believes that the children learn through experience, imitation and play. Our curriculum focuses on hands on activities and experimentation. Activities such as music, movement, dramatic play, science, and open ended art projects help cultivate children’s imaginations and give them confidence to express themselves, while group activities encourage socialization and teach important lessons in sharing and being part of a community. Outdoor or gym time is scheduled daily to help children develop large motor skills. Table top activities like puzzles, cutting, and painting help youngsters develop their fine motor skills, while also fostering imagination and cognitive development. Plus, each classroom boasts a computer and digital camera, allowing teachers to integrate technology into the curriculum. Our teachers combine our diverse curriculum with a nurturing environment and a healthy balance of playtime to encourage students’ physical, emotional, social and creative development. And through encouragement, understanding and respect, they help provide a positive atmosphere for learning. Our program is state licensed and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, so you can be confident that your child will benefit from superior educators, classroom equipment and opportunities to help build a solid foundation for the future.

Kindercise is an exercise program specially designed for children ages 3–5 years. Each class follows a weekly theme, providing preschool aged children with a fun and imaginative approach to fitness. We combine singing, dancing, games and tumbling as we lead a series of exercise routines that help keep children physically fit. We also provide a weekly overview letter for the children to take home and share with their parents. This enables parents to keep the fun and excitement of fitness alive long after their children have completed each weekly Kindercise session. No class 1/18 and 2/15.

It’s never too early to establish healthy fitness habits. This fun circuit class introduces children to basic exercises that improve their flexibility, endurance and muscle strength using light weights and their own body weight. A variety of games will add the fun factor to fitness.

Volunteer

Thank You Volunteers On behalf of the Park Board of Commissioners, Foundation Board of Trustees, the Hoffman Estates Park District and staff, I would like to thank you for your volunteer efforts in our Athletics Division, at our Foundation Fundraising Events, at the Vogelei CARES project, throughout our parks system, and in our Older Adults Program. You have helped us coach our youth and adult programs; raised money to send children to camp and other park district programs and activities; planted flowers, maintained flower beds and cleaned up parks throughout the district; and organized and ran programming and activities for older adults. Without your assistance, many of these programs and activities could not be offered and certainly not offered at the high level we are able to present them. I wanted to take this time to say thank you to all of our volunteers who will be returning this year to, once again, help us promote, fund and run our programs and activities. We look forward to working with you in the coming year and to offer many of the same and a number of new opportunities for volunteers to be involved in the park district and their community. Your willingness to give back to your community helps to make Hoffman Estates a better place to live. Dean R. Bostrom Executive Director

Friends of HE Parks Foundation The Friends of HE Parks Foundation is made up of community volunteers who work together to raise money so that more residents can participate and enjoy recreational opportunities, regardless of social, physical or economic circumstances and limitations. Since its creation in 1998, the Foundation through its scholarship fund, has donated tens of thousands of dollars to benefit hundreds of local youth and their families, enabling them to play sports, dance, skate and swim in programs they once could not afford. The Foundation strives to promote events that will raise money to help disadvantaged families of our community be able to enjoy park district programs and facilities. In 2007 the Foundation purchased a jumbo movie screen and donated it to the park district to enable the free movie nights presented for all members of our community. The foundation strives to promote events that will raise money to help the disadvantaged families of our community so that they can have fun in our programs and facilities, and the foundation members make sure you have fun while helping them do it. Make sure you mark your calendar for our annual Casino Night on February 27, 2010 at Poplar Creek Country Club from 7:00P–11:00P. Remember, not only do you get to have fun while raising money for this worthwhile charity; your contributions are tax deductible.

Our Adopt A Park program is a great way to take ownership of your local parks. As an adopting family or organization, you can choose to handle select park maintenance activities. Activities — weeding playgrounds and flower beds, raking playgrounds, painting park structures, trash and graffiti clean up, shoreline rock retrival, and visual policing. Voulenteers call 847–285–5465.

Plant a Memorial Tree The Hoffman Estates Park District’s living tree memorial program offers residents a unique way to honor and remember a loved one. A memorial tree is also the perfect way to commemorate one of life’s milestones, from weddings and anniversaries to the birth of a child. A one-time donation of $300 lets you place the tree of your choice in a park that is special to you. Memorial tree forms are available at the Community Center & Ice Arena. For more information, or to have a memorial tree form mailed to you, visit our website at www.heparks.org or call John Giacalone at 847–285–5465.
