Letter from the President Dear Friends of the Hoffman Estates Park District, Feeling the cool air on our face as we go out to get our newspaper or while we wait on the corner for the school bus, we can think about all the wonderful things we did during the summer. The Park District has also enjoyed a very exciting summer. We dedicated our new Black Bear Park with its 18 hole disc golf course, nature trail, fitness trail and playground as well as Bo’s Run, our newly expanded dog park at Willow Recreation Center. We also celebrated the 10th anniversary of Prairie Stone™ Sports and Wellness Center. Now as we enter into the winter season we can look forward to the holidays, spending time with family and friends and enjoying the sports and activities

There are programs for the whole family from our nationally accredited preschool program to our 50+ active adults club. Activities include team sports, swimming, arts and leisure, dance, ice skating, martial arts, indoor tennis and health and wellness programs. We will again hold our exciting Skate with Santa, Breakfast with Santa and Celebration of Lights events to help our residents welcome in the holiday season.

of life of our residents and guests by providing first class parks, facilities, programs and services through environmentally and fiscally responsible management practices.

Our Customer Service Pledge Our satisfaction guarantee is our promise to provide quality parks, facilities, recreation programs and leisure services that meet the expectation of our customers. If you are not satisfied with any recreational program the Hoffman Estates Park District provides due to the quality of instruction, the child’s inability to adapt emotionally to the class, or the inappropriate skill level for the registered participant, a full refund will be processed. To determine that a class does not meet their satisfaction, participants must attend the first two class sessions, but request a refund and fill out all appropriate paperwork before the third class meeting. Refund request forms are available at the HEPD Community Center and Ice Arena, Willow Recreation Center and Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center. No processing fee will apply to refunds issued under the satisfaction guarantee policy. If you are not satisfied, we would appreciate your comments, suggestions, or ideas for improvement. Please look for our customer comment cards at all district facilities. We appreciate hearing your positive comments, as well as your suggestions for improvement.

Our Community Commitment The Hoffman Estates Park District remains committed to providing the best recreation and leisure services to our community. With our "satisfaction guaranteed" pledge,

Lollie Guiney

The governing body of the park district is comprised of seven elected commissioners who represent the recreational needs of their community for four year, unpaid terms. Park commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change park district policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. Park commissioners work as a board to interpret the park and recreation needs of the community, formulate short and long term plans and inform the public of the purpose, worth and extent of the district’s services, parks and facilities.

Hockey Starter Skating Lessons / 3–7 years This program is designed to familiarize young starters with the first steps of getting up and moving on skates. Much time is spent encouraging students to move around and experience being on the ice which enables them to progress quicker. The goal is for the skaters to move on to the nationally renowned development programs. Children will learn: Children will learn: How to sit on ice and stand up, proper SUMO stance, march forward across ice, forward two foot glide for 10 feet, two foot slalom, dip or squat in motion, forward swizzles, snowplow stop-scrape ice, 2 foot jump in motion, beginning forward stride mechanics, backward swizzles, 1 foot forward glide and multi directional movement using 4 edges. Depending on the progress and comfort of the players, stick work may be introduced in the last couple of weeks of each course. Bike helmets are mandatory and inline/roller blade knee, elbow guards and ski gloves are recommended. Skating is too hard to learn and teach if a child is not determined to do it so we recommend that potential students try public skate first to ensure they are interested and ready.

Kindercise With Me / 1½–3 years / CCIA

Kindermusik Village / 0–18 months with parent / CCIA

Parent or caregiver participation is required. Each class follows a weekly theme, providing toddler aged children with a fun and imaginative approach to play. The class emphasizes gross motor skills and social interaction through songs, dance, games and creative activities. No class 1/18 and 2/15.

The Kindermusik Village class provides a delightful environment unlike any other. Through a unique blend of multi-level activities that include creative movement, vocal play, object and instrument exploration and a colorful literature component, baby’s growth and development are stimulated and all senses are engaged. Kindermusik Village is for lap babies, crawlers and walkers. It incorporates the most current research on early childhood development and provides families a special place for learning and connecting with other parents and babies through music and movement. This session’s theme is "Hickory Dickory Tickle and Bounce." Research shows the more you expose your baby to nursery rhymes and songs, the stronger those emerging language learning skills will be. That’s why these Mother Goose like stories and rhymes are the main theme of this class. Plus, you’ll develop research proven communication strategies with your child through listening activities, speaking "parentese," and sign language. Class fee does not include kit fee of $44 payable to instructor on first day. Instructor: Laura Musso

Kindermusik Our Time / 1½–3 years with parent / CCIA Our Time encourages toddlers to uncover an engaging musical world while building confidence, self control and communication skills. Singing, imitating sounds, rhyming and object identification foster language skills while creative movement to various musical moods, develops a sense of balance, timing and spatial awareness. Listening and turn taking encourage blossoming social skills. Our Time reflects the emotional foundations of school readiness and the latest research on music and early childhood development. Our Time is a unique opportunity for parent and child to interact and learn together in an unhurried and joyful manner. This session’s theme is "Fiddle Dee Dee." With silly, bumpy lap bounces we’ll help toddlers develop rhythm while further developing their ever emerging language skills. With a special stringed instrument emphasis in the music from class, parents can bring home the violin, cello and orchestra sounds to help their toddlers stay happy and engaged learners at home, too. The Hoffman Estates Park District preschool program promotes child development which supports academic excellence. Developmentally-appropriate instruction is provided in an environment that values cultural diversity and nurtures a love of learning. Our preschool program focuses on the development of the whole child. Our play-based curriculum incorporates a variety of learning opportunities designed to develop problem solving, creativity, self-expression and academic skills. Children participate in a variety of activities everyday, including art, music, creative movement, dramatic play, math, science, block play, group discussions and outdoor play. Our qualified teachers combine this diverse curriculum through a healthy balance of child-initiated and teacher-directed learning which develops a child’s physical, social, language, cognitive and creative skills. And through encouragement, understanding and respect, we provide a positive, safe and nurturing atmosphere for learning. Our program supports our community. Children learn about our community through field trips and community events. We believe that children learn best when parents and teachers work together and support each other, therefore, we encourage the active involvement of parents.

Friends of HE Parks Foundation The Friends of HE Parks Foundation is made up of community volunteers who work together to raise money so that more residents can participate and enjoy recreational opportunities, regardless of social, physical or economic circumstances and limitations. Since its creation in 1998, the Foundation through its scholarship fund, has donated tens of thousands of dollars to benefit hundreds of local youth and their families, enabling them to play sports, dance, skate and swim in programs they once could not afford. The Foundation strives to promote events that will raise money to help disadvantaged families of our community be able to enjoy park district programs and facilities.

Remember, not only do you get to have fun while raising money for this worthwhile charity; your contributions are tax deductible.

The Hoffman Estates Park District is proud to be a member of Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA). Throughout the northwest suburbs, NWSRA is the leader in providing outstanding recreational opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. NWSRA’s team of full-time Therapeutic Recreation professionals and trained part-time staff offer a multitude of year-round programs offerings including sports, camping, social programs and much more. Increased self esteem, physical and social skills development, making friends and having fun are just a few of the benefits of participating in NWSRA programs! Camps, trips and special events are also available at various times throughout the year. Inclusion assistance is provided by NWSRA to those individuals who wish to participate in their home park district program. When registering, the parent of an individual with a disability should inform the park district (and NWSRA, if desired) of any accommodation needed in order for the individual to successfully participate in the program. The park district staff will then contact NWSRA for assistance with the accommodation. NWSRA is hiring leaders for positions of inclusion as well as NWSRA programs. If you have an interest in working with individuals with disabilities, contact NWSRA at 847–392–2848 to discuss possibilities. Special Leisure Services Foundation, the fundraising arm of NWSRA, partners with public and private corporations, foundations and individuals to support and promote for children and adults with disabilities. Throughout the year, the organization hosts a variety of fundraising events that help support accessible transportation, general program support, inclusion opportunities, the Kevin T. Kendrigan Memorial Scholarship program and Special Olympics and Paralympics opportunities in the northwest suburbs. For more information, please visit www.nwsra.org/slsf.
