Enhancing the quality of life of our residents and guests by providing first class parks, facilities, programs and services.

Winter 2011

Letter from the President Dear Friends of the Hoffman Estates Park District, As the months get colder and the days grow shorter, there are still many opportunities to stay active at your Park District. Don’t let winter stop you from enjoying all the parks programs and facilities available to you and your family. Maintaining an active lifestyle is an important part of the overall health and well-being of our families and our communities. Get out there! We offer many unique and fun activities such as:

Keith Evans

President

Rock Climbing is available at PSS&WC on a 2 story climbing wall. We offer lessons and open climb times. (pg. 41)

Mission Statement

The mission of the Hoffman Estates Park District is to enhance the quality of life of our residents and guests by providing first class parks, facilities, programs and services through environmentally and fiscally responsible management practices.

Our Customer Service Pledge

Our satisfaction guarantee is our promise to provide quality parks, facilities, recreation programs and leisure services that meet the expectation of our customers. If you are not satisfied with any recreational program the HEPD provides due to the quality of instruction, the child’s inability to adapt emotionally to the class, or the inappropriate skill level for the registered participant, a full refund will be processed. To determine that a class does not meet their satisfaction, participants must attend the first two class sessions, but request a refund and fill out all appropriate paperwork before the third class meeting. Refund request forms are available at the Triphahn Center, Willow Recreation Center and Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center. No processing fee will apply to refunds issued under the satisfaction guarantee policy. If you are not satisfied, we would appreciate your comments, suggestions, or ideas for improvement. Please look for our customer comment cards at all district facilities. We appreciate hearing your positive comments, as well as your suggestions for improvement.

Our Community Commitment

The Hoffman Estates Park District remains committed to providing the best recreation and leisure services to our community. With our "satisfaction guaranteed" pledge, residents and their guests can be assured that the Hoffman Estates Park District staff will work to not only meet expectations but surpass them.

Ice Skating can be enjoyed indoors at our Triphahn Center and Ice Arena (contact us for Public Skate times) and outdoors on the lakes (weather permitting) at South Ridge, Highpoint and Evergreen Parks. (pg. 6)

Lollie Guiney

Vice President

Sledding hills are open at Pine Park and Seascape when there is ample snow fall. (pg. 6) Wallyball is volleyball played on a racquetball court., give it a try! Bring a group from work for a fun team building event! (pg. 31)

Mike Bickham Treasurer

Racquetball leagues and lessons are available at Willow Rec Center. (pg. 31) Cardio Tennis is a unique a drop-in class for players of all levels that keeps you moving for 60 minutes with high energy drills to music at PSS&WC. (pg. 33) Pickle Ball, a combination of tennis and badminton, is played at PSS&WC. (pg. 11) Plus, we offer many fitness classes and sports leagues. Consider, also, volunteering as a sports team coach or in another area. Talented volunteers are needed in many areas of our district and with the Friends of the HE Parks Foundation. The Foundation is a wonderful organization that raises money to provide programs for all in our community, regardless of financial means. There’s always something happening for all ages at Hoffman Estates Park District. Have a safe and healthy winter!

Ronald Greenberg Assistant Secretary

Lili McGovern Commissioner

Keith Evans, President President Park Board of Commissioners

Park Board of Commissioners

The governing body of the park district is comprised of seven elected commissioners who represent the recreational needs of their community for four year, unpaid terms. Park commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change park district policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. Park commissioners work as a board to interpret the park and recreation needs of the community, formulate short and long term plans and inform the public of the purpose, worth and extent of the district’s services, parks and facilities. Board Meetings are held monthly at 7:00P

Hockey Hockey Development Programs

The Hockey Development Program encompasses three categories designed to take the new player from the learning to stand up on skates to, over time, being able to play on a competitive team. We offer two days a week for a very competitive price believing that skating is one of the most difficult sport exercises to learn and master and needs frequent practice to really begin to enjoy and progress. However, have to miss a day, no problem! Curriculum is designed to enable students to progress at their own speed. It is always recommended to have a child try a public skate first to ensure they are ready to focus on the process of learning to skate. Contact Randy Jordan, Assistant GM/Hockey Director, for more information on these excellent classes at 847–285–5501 or rjordan@heparks.org.

Young Starter Development

Hockey Development

This two day a week program gets the new skater familiarized with getting up and down on skates. Learning to work edges by marching, gliding etc, up to the beginning of striding for skating. Much time is given to doing drills that encourage free movement and motion that teaches skills while children are having fun and are unaware they are actually learning. This class requires a bike helmet and ski gloves or similar. This is a skating only class. Plastic sticks may be introduced at the end of the session. PROGRAM # 212469 Mgr. Jordan

This very successful two day a week program is ideal for athletes eight and up with minimal experience on skates and those younger that have progressed from the starter program. Although the focus in this program is to learn to execute the important Sumo elements of skating, it also includes training in stick work and small games etc. The goal is to prepare players to advance to adding the 3 on 3 Sunday House League games to the next stage of progression. Equipment is available up to certain sizes. PROGRAM # 212469 Mgr. Jordan

Hey COACH!

The success of our Youth Athletic programs relies on the many volunteers who coach our teams. Coaching is a fun and rewarding way to serve your community, either on your own or co-coaching with another parent to share responsibilities and the time commitment. Consider these benefits!

— Coaching your own child’s team

— You have a say in what they learn

— Great way to meet other parents

— Coaching can be great exercise

— Children like having their parents

gives you more time together and how they’re taught

involved with their activities

The HE Park District provides our coaches with a special training session and the full support of our Program Managers. If you have questions or would like to volunteer to coach a team, contact Nicole Chesak, Superintendent of Recreation at nchesak@heparks.org or 847-781-3635.

Early Childhood Enrichment Preschool Kindermusik Village

Kindermusik Imagine That

Kindermusik Village is for lap-babies, crawlers and walkers. It incorporates the most current research on early childhood development and provides families a special place for learning and connecting with other parents and babies through music and movement. This session's theme is "Cock a Doodle Moo". In this class you will sing songs about the farm, including "Old Macdonald", "Hayride" and "Clever Cows". You’ll engage in rituals and playful activities that engage your baby including infant massage, lap bounces, exercise and quiet time. Class fee does not include kit fee payable on first day.

Your child’s unique interests will be fully engaged in an environment that invites the development of the whole child — allowing for curious young minds, bodies and voices to reflect, compare, make choices, express opinions, solve problems, sing and move — all through a joyful musical experience. This session's theme is "Toys I Make, Trips I Take". Well use the theme of a toy shop to make our pretend — creations, using rhythm and songs with every imaginary saw, hammer and nail. The result is building the preschoolers sense of a sequence of events which is good for storytelling as well as making his ideas a reality. Each week provides preschoolers an uninterrupted session of imaginative play that’s guided in a very specific, sequential way — with a special sharing time with parents in the last 10 minutes of class. No class 3/20 and 3/27. Fee does not include kit fee payable on first day.
