When it comes to board games the ones that have stuck around for generations seem to be the same ones that also happen to cause frustration, family arguments and if you are lucky, so fun times, there is something addictive about these games and the tension they produce. Among the biggest culprits are Monopoly, Mouse Trap, Battle Ships and the latest available in our house Operation. Believe it or not this game was first dreamt up in 1964, that means poor old “Cavity Sam” has been under the knife for 57 years, that’s a long time, even by NHS standards. The guy who came up with the idea, John Spinello, got a bit of a raw deal too, he sold this idea to the toy designer Marvin Glass for $500 and the promise of a job after graduation which he never received. It passed hands before being taken over by Hasbro and is now worth a whopping $40 million, that’s a lot of Funny Bones trying to be prised out around the world. It still features the original pieces, including the adams apple, the broken heart and that fiddly breadbasket in the tummy. It also has the same game play and a similar image of Sam, although thankfully he is now wearing a pair of pants and his eyebrows look less threatening. For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of playing this surgery-based board game the concept it simple, you pick a card which will allocate the body part you need to retrieve. Then you have to use the Electro Probe (tweezers) to remove the piece without touching the sides, if you do a buzzer will go off and Sam’s nose will light up, its then the next players turn to have a go. The player who successfully removes the offending item receives the money, the most money wins the game. It is as entertaining and infuriating to play as it was when I was a kid, plus that buzzer still makes me jump, it’s great for testing kids’ dexterity and patience skills and once the kids are in bed, take things to a new difficulty level by getting some drinks involved.
