GROWTH IS A SPIRAL

Years in our life: freshman to senior year ERIELLE OCAMPO OPINION EDITOR

“I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.” - F. Scott Fitzgerald. With the last month of high school coming into view, I can’t help but feel nostalgic of the past four years. I thought I knew it all at fourteen, I honestly still think I know it all. Maybe I’m just stubborn, maybe I like the comfort in thinking so. I look back and think I was so naive and I was, but in the moment that’s all I knew. All I ever wanted was to grow up and in doing so I forgot to live. But time doesn’t slow down, seconds turn to minutes, minutes into hours, and before I knew it I was seventeen, getting ready to pack up my memories and move onto a new chapter. Growth was a hard concept for me to grip onto. I struggled with a constant panic that I wasn’t living this so-called “high school experience.” I constantly was beating myself up for letting myself get back to where I started. But these past 4 months I’ve realized that every little thing molded me into someone new. As my memories slowly fade and as I look at pictures of myself from each year, I can’t recognize myself. But deep down they’re still me. But a more grown up, more insightful me. I’ve come to realize that I don’t “lose myself ” when I grow up, I just merely put her in a safe corner with a good book until I’m ready to see her again. I’ve realized what it meant to truly live for myself this year. And my setbacks didn’t stop me from becoming who I am today. One day you may feel as though you have everything you need and the next you may not. But this spiral is a circle of life. You live, you learn, and you grow. And I can go on and on about everyone who has shaped me into who I am so, let me have my moment of an acceptance speech.. To my parents who showed me it was okay to feel overwhelmed and how to love. To my best friend, Lauren, who stuck with me throughout every year of my life since seventh grade. To each of my teachers who helped me not only learn academically, but also gave me a different perspective on life. So if I could give you one piece of advice, Just live. Live for yourself, live for those moments of laughing tears, and live for those moments you want to think back on and smile at. High school was never something I expected to be easy but with everyone by my side, I was able to persevere.

These past four years have taught me a lot about being patient with myself. I learned that it’s okay to change everything you once knew. You’re life is not defined by your grades, but the memories that you create.

Throughout my four years at RHS, I learned that life throws many unexpected roadblocks, but you should never let it stop you from fulfilling your hopes and dreams.

I learned that it’s never too late to try something new or make new friends! I also learned that forming good relationships wih your teachers will help you get through along the way. I’ve learned a lot about myself, my interest, and what I want my future to look like for me. Although it’s a bit unclear and can be scary at time, I know that I’m ready to take on anything that life throws at me.

TEACHERS’ FAVORITE MEMORIES OF THE SENIOR CLASS “Adam sent an email letting me know he wouldn’t be in class on his 18th birthday so he could keep some semblance of happiness. He also stated he was going to sleep in and enjoy peanut butter toast. On his 18th birthday, I got another email from him with a picture of peanut butter toast. It made me actually laugh out loud and our 1st hour also enjoyed the picture of peanut butter toast.”

“Impromptu karaoke during the long power outage in Spring 2021” - Herr Crites

“When Covid shut the school down the 200 plus Apush students didn’t let it damper our spirits. We had weekly game nights on Friday over Zoom and built a bond that continued through this year when we saw Spider-Man at 10pm on opening night. The heart and resiliency of this group is unmatched and I am so excited for their next chapter!” - Mr. Z

“Our AP Environmental Science aquatic study field trip was amazing and gave us memories that will last a lifetime. Mayu got bit by a water snake but took it like a champ!” - Mr. Shurter

“The 2022 Falcon Friendship Basketball was SO much fun. The stands were full with so many friends and family, supporting our students with special needs. My heart was full during this amazing Basketball Game!!” - Mrs. Cosentino

“Putting together that incredibly long but incredibly rewarding 2 1/2 hour Homecoming pep assembly!!” - Mrs. Cusmano

“NEHS coffee shops!” - Mrs. Schrems

THE TALON || SENIOR ISSUE 2022

STUDENTS’ FAVORITE MEMORIES “Spending quality time with people I never thought I’d meet. Through theater I’ve met far more people than I thought I would, and so many of them have become such great friends and we’ve had such great memories together. I wouldn’t say one memory would be my favorite, but a bunch of memories from it with all kinds of people over the last four years.”

“My favorite memory is going to the football games and sitting in the student section.”

“Preforming the Uprising show with the marching band, it was truly amazing to be surrounded by so many people that were so passionate about what they were doing.”

“My favorite memory was opening night for last year’s A Musical Revue. I was so happy to bring back live theatre after lock down. Even though COVID guidelines meant that we had to perform in the parking lot on a windy day, it was just great to be back on stage. It was also fun surprising my teachers because I’m usually so quiet in class.”

“One day in APUSH, Mr. Z announced for all of the 60 of us to put down our phones. Then, he suddenly got down on the ground on his hands and knees like a cow and “walked” around the classroom pretending to chew grass like a cow does and mooing too. He was demonstrating how new fences being put up kept cows reigned in therefore driving cowboys out of business. Once he got up, he said he hoped no one recorded that for the world to see. And said his knees would hurt for days.”

“13 past midnight”

“I loved freshman year Graphic Design. Our teacher was out all semester on maternity leave and at one point we had this sub that would just play Disney songs all hour and sing along to them. He also stood on a swivel chair and tried to throw trash away from across the room. What a guy.”

“Being a part of the theatre program, RATS, throughout my first 2 years of high school.”

“Having off campus lunch and just sitting in my car with a group of friends listening to music and talking about interesting things that happened that day.”

PAGE 14 || FREDDY’S ADVICE

ASK FREDDY: SENIORS ADVICE TO UNDERCLASSMEN XOXO, Freddy the Falcon Know your limitations when you’re stepping into a situation in which you could be easily overwhelmed. And after you discover your limits, always search for new ways to bend them and push yourself to be the best you can be.

Focus on yourself and what makes you happy, don’t worry about the drama and live in the moment.

Don't be afraid to be who you are. If you like to dress a certain way, don't restrain yourself from doing so. It's good to be different because that makes you more comfortable with yourself. Don't stay hidden within everyone else's shadow. Be bold, be bright, and be confident.

Join clubs!! Theater was one of the best choices I made my high school career!

As the mascot of Rochester High School, I, Freddy the Falcon, have some great news for all the underclassmen! With the help of our graduating class of 2022, we compiled a list of advice that the seniors have for underclassmen.

Finish college applications by October 31st, do SAT sooner than later, don’t base college decision on anyone but yourself.

Don’t let other people’s opinions stop you from doing things that make you happy. Be 100% you and don’t stifle yourself for anyone. Other people will come and go from your life but you’re going to be stuck with yourself for the rest of your life, so make sure you’re happy with who that is.

Don’t be shy and hide in a bubble and not talk to people. I regret staying in my safe bubble. Don’t wait for it, just go for it! Leave high school with no regrets.
